Chase a New Horizon [open] - Drachen - 09-13-2012 D R A C H E N
The cool autumn-chilled air gently caressed the winged stallion’s body, sending little shivers down the Pegasus’s spine. His silken coat was now covered in dirt and debris from his relentless days of travel, and a thick layer of sweat encased his large body. Traveling in late Tallsun had been a terrible idea, he admitted. The heat of the long summer days could only be avoided by flying at a high speed, using the wind to cool his body, but even then the sun would beat tirelessly down on the ebony and ivory brute through the thin cirrus clouds. Drachen was relieved that the everlasting Tallsun had finally ended. He had always wanted to see the trees transform from their usual green to rich fiery colors of various reds and oranges. His old land had been mostly made of deserts and cliffs, the only living plants dry and brittle; their only colors brown and charred black—afterall, the land wasn’t called the "Land of the Dragon’s Fire” for nothing. Remembering his homeland brought his mind back to his past, to the past that he ran away from. It haunted him every day, the past. In his dreams, his thoughts, every time he closed his eyelids, he saw it. Sees his father’s dead body on the ground where he found it laying, blood pouring out from the gaping wound in his throat, staining his onyx coat a deep crimson. He still remembers her face—Sakima’s face—as she looked over the scene. Her cherry bay baroque face frozen in some sort of sadness, yet the glint in her eyes made it clear to Drachen. The Pegasus knew he was staring at the King's murderer then, yet she turned to him and pointed an accusing finger at him. “He did it.” He remembered her words clearly, “I saw him. He slaughtered his own father.” The winged creature stopped a striped hoof and tossed his long matted tail against his hocks at the revolting memory. How dare that mare blame such a thing on him, leaving him as an outcast of his own lands?! An annoyed snort escaped through his flared nostrils in his anger. He picked up his gate to a fast gallop with his wings tucked firmly against his sides, the soft sound of his hooves pounding on the forest floor freezing all of his current thoughts and slowly soothing his frustration. As his anger evaporated, so did his speed. A steady trot took over the quick gallop. He continued at that gate until it became rhythmic. Legs moving stealthily yet graceful, leg muscles stretched and contacted, hair flew behind him in tangled locks, wind blew in his face and ruffled his wing feathers, Drachen was in his element. His eyelids slid shut as he flung his head back, a loud call trumpeted through his parted lips, a deep baritone note that ricocheted off of the green-leafed trees as he chased the setting sun under the horizon. RE: Chase a New Horizon [open] - Drachen - 09-15-2012 D R A C H E N The wind rustled the leaves gently; making the entire forest seem like it was taking small, ragged breaths. Drachen was not used to this, being surrounded by plants and wildlife, as his life until that point had consisted of his beloved sparse desert and high cliffs. During his short duration of being on the ground, he had already spotted dozens of animals. Squirrels scurried up trees, cheeks expanded with acorns; rabbits dashed in their burrows at the sight of potential danger, foxes hunted for unsuspecting prey, songbirds perched in high branches and chirped their songs. It was all new to the winged creature, being around so much life. A serene silence drenched the forests at that moment. It was almost too thick to be serene, as even the birds and insects had quieted. Then he heard the faint rustling of underbrush, and an onyx ear to turn in the direction instinctively. A loud nicker followed the sound soon after, causing the brute to stop abruptly, coming to his usual graceful stop. "Good day, brother!" A welcoming feminine voice reached his ears. Drac froze on instinct, his muscles becoming tense. His vision was impaired, and the mare had come from his blindside. Straining for a sound, he heard the rhythmic sound of hooves hitting the ground in a trot until they came to a stop somewhere near him. "I am Cassiopeia - Dragon's Throat Oracle. Might I ask your name?" Upon hearing the mare—Cassiopeia—‘s melodic voice, he zoned in on her location and swiveled his head toward her. His muscled instantly relaxed and his cobalt blue eye widened slightly as his good eye took in her appearance. The mare had a dark blue hide like the night sky. Her speckled white sabino markings glittered slightly from the setting sun hiding in the tree line, mirroring the many silvery stars in the sky. Her leonine tail was moving slightly with the forest’s uneven breathing. It was unusual for a Pegasus to have such a tail, yet on the dame it just added on to her overall elegant look. Huge wings were attached to her sides, with a mixture of black, blue, and silver feathers. There were small marks of pink scar tissue littering her body that had yet to be healed completely, giving Drac the impression that she had been in a fight recently. The brute, gathering his courtesy, replied, "Oracle. You must be very wise." He complimented, his voice a nice brazen and charming tone and words slightly accented by the tongue of his previous land. He inclined his neck slightly to give the mare a polite partial bow. "I am Drachen, Outcast of the Rathin herd located a several weeks travel east of the rising sun." He hesitated as he said outcast, almost giving his title as prince, yet stopped when he remembered. Had he not just been outcasted from the land? Not just ran away to forget everything? He snorted at himself internally. RE: Chase a New Horizon [open] - Cassiopeia - 09-17-2012
RE: Chase a New Horizon [open] - Drachen - 09-19-2012 D R A C H E N I’m only as wise as the years I’ve lived. The blue roan replied. Though a simple and humble response, Drachen caught the almost double meaning of it. The dame couldn’t be much older than him, maybe two or three years at the most, but the way she said it… She must have gained her knowledge through her experiences. He could now tell it just by the way she held herself, the depths in her cyan blue eyes, and the thin jagged claw marks that ran across her body. The brute was then reminded of his own scars, his own past. The memories were scattered in his brain, now only glimpses here and there from the many years he had fought to forget them. Though they were from his foal days, the few images in his mind that were left were still vivid and left his heart stinging with fresh hurt each time. He could almost feel the pain of the wolf’s attack that had cost him one of his eyes…. He forced himself to stop thinking at that moment, afraid to delve too deep into the past. Instead he focused on the dame standing in front of him, his cupped ears flicking in the Oracle’s direction to better listen to what she was saying. She welcomed him to the new land, of which was named Helovia, before dipping her head. When her head rose once more, the smile on her lips was gone, yet her face still held that strange warm friendliness that seemed to radiate off of her. "You have traveled far. Do you seek the protection of a herd?" The bi-chrome stallion hadn’t been expecting that. Once he made his decision to leave his previous herd, he’d thought he’d live as an outcast for the rest of his life—a nomad with nowhere to call home. He had to admit the offer was quite tempting, especially if all of the dame’s herdmates were as kind as she. "I’d be honored to belong to a herd such as yours, Cassiopeia." A single sapphire eye locked with her cyan pair. "Though hopefully your lands are more open than this forest. A Pegasus has to have room to spread their wings." He replied, adding a slight smile after he finished speaking as to not offend the winged mare if the herd she spoke of lived around this area. Drac preferred the open space of the desert, where he could spread his massive wings to their full extent. In this wilderness, however, he could barely untuck one of the feathery appendages from his sides without bumping it against the hard trunk of a tree. It was nice to have shade from the sun, and the cool breeze that weaved through the trees, but to the stallion, it felt too crowded. Like he was cut off from the rest of the world. As the sun receded beyond the uneven forest horizon, Drachen found his distaste for the wooded area growing. The icy Orangemoon air easily seeped through his thin bi-colored pelt, chilling him to the bone. Long silver striped onyx tendrils whipped across his angular face, further obscuring his vision. The winged stallion tossed his head back, trying to remove the blackened forelock from his single capri blue eye. “I couldn’t agree more, my friend.” The femme averred, claiming the brute’s attention once more. “I believe you’ll find the Dragon’s Throat to your liking.” Not a moment after the blue roan finished speaking did she pivot on her hind leg in search for a clearing with enough area for two Pegasi’s massive wingspans. Once the winged mare had taken to the skies, Drac quickly followed suit. He let his wings unfurl themselves from his sides, expanding them to their full capacity. His lithe legs carried his body across the grassy clearing at a fast gait to increase his speed. With one dip of his outstretched wings, the Pegasus was lifted off of the ground. “Come,” the mare’s musical, feminine voice reached his ears, “your new home awaits you!” A few powerful strokes later and the winged stallion was gliding in the darkening sky, his wings held out like sails on a sailboat. The once large trees looked like toothpicks, and the few equines that spotted the landscape seemed to be ants. The thin, airy wind caressed his outstretched sails, ruffling the soft feathers. Drac’s eyes slowly slid closed as he enjoyed the feeling of weightlessness, of being unbound to the earth, of freedom, before opening once more to devour the beautiful Helovian canvas. |
