songs of lilting grace - Mordecai - 05-17-2015

Mordecai hated grass. She hated the way it tasted, the way it felt on her tongue, the way it stuck in her teeth and ... just everything about it. She wanted milk but every time she tried to get milk from her mother she was either nipped at, shoved away, or got nothing. Not even a little drop. The girl had also noticed that not having to feed her constantly had lead to her mother focusing on her tasks as Sultana for longer periods of time. Her father had always been busy and was no less so now that she had been weaned. 'Eat grass.' Her mother told her, but there wasn't much grass in the Throat and what grass there was was covered in gritty sand, which made it even more gross.

The girl snorted and pawed at the grass under her cloven hooves. It was an act of defiance against her mother that made her sneak out of the Throat again, and somehow she'd even managed to leave Gwaihir behind. She'd bypassed the heart (because she didn't want to get lost in the caves again) and finally stopped traveling when she made it to the meadow. It had taken her a little more than a day to make it that far because she had stopped for naps and to eat the nasty grass that her mom insisted that she start eating. Gross.

Her stomach rumbled and the girl reluctantly grabbed a mouthful of clover and began stomping her way toward the stream that she had found the night before, thinking that she could wash the grass down with water to hide the taste. She stopped at the edge of the stream, her ears flat against her head as she chewed and chewed and chewed the clover. When she finally swallowed the nasty green mess she nearly dunked her entire head into the stream, anxious to get as much water as she could and wash the taste of clover out of her mouth.

This is where Abraham was born, lived most of his childhood, made his first kill, and decided how he was going to live in this Thistle Meadow. Sharing it now, with Brienne, was a gift. Memories flashed over their bond, some from Gwyneverre through Abraham to Brienne, and some straight from Abraham to Brienne. The gold glided low over the meadow, eyes wide and brilliant and taking everything in with wonder. Visions of Circe and Archibald and Reginald all standing, waiting for Abraham, flashed behind her lids. Family she breathed, and Gwyneverre let loose a spiral of celebratory fire into the air. Yes, family.

Abraham moved slowly, without much purpose, and watched his dragons dance on the wind. To be out of the Throat, away from the heat and suffocation of so many bodies around him, the young behemoth felt as free as the winds themselves. Relief flooded his system, calming all of his muscles and sending calming waves over his wondrous companions. The air filled with their songs, the gold more eloquent and high, while the white was deep but staccato. Lowering his muzzle towards the earth, Abraham grazed while his dragons explored.

After his belly was full, Abraham lifted his head, and as he did, Gwyneverre sent an image into his mind. Mordecai. The girl with the white tail. From the Throat. Abraham nodded, and lifted his powerful body into a trot towards the location of the girl his white had given him. "Aye, Mordecai!" He called to the young filly in the distance, his dragons circling and swooping before him.

The water was like a miracle sent from the gods that washed away the absolutely horrible taste of grass from her mouth. But ... then she was still hungry. Her ears stayed pinned back against her head as she stomped from the water back to the grass. She stood and stared down at it as if staring at it could intimidate it into tasting better, and maybe she thought it would. Her stomach growled and she dipped her head down and began tearing great mouthfuls of it up and eating it as quickly as she could to fill her rumbling belly. As her hunger decreased she became more and more aware of the goings on in the meadow around her. She could hear the familiar sounds of dragons and when she lifted her head to look she thought that she could see the glint of white and gold, but couldn't be positive. "Zasqa zhavorsa?" Her head tilted and she forgot about the godawful taste of grass. Another glint of scales caught her dark eyes and she took a step forward. "Hoshor zhavorsa?" Did they fly together like that out in the wild? Was it wrong of her to assume that they didn't?

They never did get truly close enough for Mordecai to see them, so she was left with only a glimpse. There was someone that had a white and gold dragon, though, but what were their names? There were so many horses in the Throat it was hard to keep track of everyone, but she knew that there was someone with dragons. She'd seen them and had talked to them and the gold one had even sat on her. "Breneee!" She suddenly shouted, bounding forward several steps before stopping when she heard her name.

"Aye, Mordecai!"

The dark girl turned, blinking her equally dark eyes and squinted against the sunlight to see Abraham and his dragons. "Ab-ruh-haaammmm!" She called out quite happily. "Breneee! Genvere!" Then she was running toward him, eager to greet the dragons, and him of course. "Aena shekhikhi!"

Brienne, still but a child, was so excited to see as Mordecai raced towards her with dark eyes glistening with the same excitement. The golden youth trilled her happiness and spiralled towards the youngling. Carefully, the young dragon stopped her motion and dropped onto Mordecai's withers. Brienne looked to Gwyneverre, waiting for approval, but the white elder dropped onto Abraham's crown. Fiery eyes looked to the younger gold curiously, but not disapprovingly, so Brienne stayed on the filly's back.

What does she say? Gwyneverre asked as Abraham closed the distance between him and the filly. I am not sure. He spoke to the white, lifting a curious brow at the filly. "Who taught you to speak like that?" He did not greet her, did not ask why she was so far from the Throat, did not seem concerned about her safety one bit--because he was not. Foals who chose to roam needed to understand that in the wilds, no one had your back. You fended for yourself no matter what. However, in the wilds, you had the perfect opportunity to learn from others. "Can you teach me? I will teach you something, too." He looked down on her with mismatched eyes, and a dark, but oh-so handsome smirk broke his blackened lips.

Gwyneverre lowered herself to lay between Abraham's ears and rest her cheek on his dual horns. Brienne likes her too much. She commented, but Abraham brushed it off. There was no harm in it--she was but a filly, and she was no enemy even as she grew older and stronger.

As the golden dragon flew toward her the girl slowed her approach then stopped completely so the dragon could settle on her withers. She craned her head back to look at the golden and she couldn't hide the happiness that sparkled in her dark eyes or bubbled in her tiny chest that the golden one had chosen to sit on her. That meant she was special, didn't it? Her white tail flicked from side to side and her attention was drawn back to Abraham when he spoke. Who taught her to speak like what? Like she normally did? "Huh?" He had to be referring to how she normally spoke so she finally answered his question with a simple word. "Ave." But she knew that he didn't know so she explained in just as simple a manner. "Father."

"Can you teach me? I will teach you something, too."

Mordecai nodded her head at Abraham's request. She'd tried to teach him a few words before but Hawke had been there and had been carrying on like a giant baby and she hadn't gotten much teaching done. "What you want learn?" She asked in the common tongue that her mother had been struggling to teach her, then she decided the best place to start was with his dragons again and repeat the tiny lesson she'd tried to give him before. "Zhavorsa. Dragon." She stated, peering up at Abraham. "Genvere is zasqa zhavorsa. White Dragon. Breneee is hoshor zhavorsa. Gold dragon."

The girl paused to think back to the last time she'd seen Abraham. "Boy from last time. Toki rakhi .. dumb boy." And she grinned at Abraham because she'd added another word that she hadn't spoken to him before. "Ab-ruh-hamm try now."
