It All Starts Here [Joining] - Rift - 11-17-2015 This is something All or nothing
RIFT The sun was relentless as it pulsed upon the ruby stallion's back, golden tendrils of light scalding their way across the sandy terrain. Swiveling his ears about, Rift tried to catch the sound of approaching hoofbeats, but with the muffling effects of the sand and the gentle crashing of the waves, it was a slim chance that the lad would hear anything unless the creature were already upon him. He rolled his shoulders and flicked his tail, a habit that had developed over long years of anxiety and worry. Somehow, after leaving Naerys with her family at the Edge, Rift, Ranjiri, and Laedere had been separated. He had been so focused on his daydreams and nostalgic memories, that he didn't even notice that the pair of mares from Dragon's Throat were no longer accompanying him. Fortunately, though, Ranjiri and her jeweled eyes had been smart enough to give the boy directions to the borderlands of the Throat. Though, from the looks of it, unless Dragon's Throat was beneath an ocean, he had gotten lost. Relaxing his shoulders and letting his blue and black spotted wings droop to the sands, the lanky rogue stared dully at the ground beneath his hooves. What would warrant a land being named Dragon's Throat? He supposed it could be a misnomer; after all, he was born in a lush and almost paradisal canyon called the Inferno Rift. A small smile curled his lips at the thought of his childhood home and how much he had taken for granted. His skull drooped lower, every breath stirring up the little golden grains that peppered the earth. For the scarlet boy, the past would always be bittersweet. At least the weather was nice. This is something All or nothing
RIFT It wasn't long before the sound of hooves pressing upon sand brought the scarlet boy's head up, his lips curling into a wide grin and an exclamation of relief perched upon his lips. But it was not Ranjiri and Laedere that stood before him, no, it was yet another stranger. Tilting his head in a birdlike fashion at the presence of the buttermilk mare, Rift did not have to wait long for an explanation. Oh. Confusion crinkled his brow as he switched his gaze back and forth between the shield maiden - Zenobia, if he had heard correctly - and the lapping waves. Was she a transformed hippocampus or was the Dragon's Throat simply hidden beyond the sea? Staring at her wings, the latter possibility seemed to be likely. Focusing once more upon the proud figure of Zenobia, Rift grinned in what he hoped was a sheepish manner and lifted his wings back to their place at his shoulder - it would do no good to look like a buffoon before an emissary of his potential new home. "Hi." He cleared his throat, dismayed at the raspy quality of his voice, and tried once more, "Hello, I'm Rift and well..." the ruby rogue shifted awkwardly, cursing himself for his inability to hold a normal conversation without coming off as a fool, "Ranjiri and Laedere were escorting me here. Do you know them? They wanted me to join the Throat, but we... " He looked around helplessly, as if the winged pair of women would suddenly materialize at his side to offer support, "We got separated on our way back from the World's Edge. We were escorting a yearling home and, well, I don't know where they went..." He trailed off, hoping that he had given enough of an explanation for the warrior to deem him harmless enough not to throw into the sea. RE: It All Starts Here [Joining] - Gaucho - 11-20-2015

This is something All or nothing
RIFT It was not long before yet another equine joined the small company upon the scarlet sands, this time the stranger held an air of primal authority. Rift had to resist the urge to take a few steps back as he appraised the stranger. Fiery wings, antlers, serpents and bone adorned the stallion as naturally as Rift's own wings sprouted from his shoulders, giving the brute a look of refinement along with one of intimidation all at once. The gangly lad felt the muscles in his legs tense; he could handle questioning by the buttermilk warrior, but the intimidation factor that the newcomer offered caused Rift's anxiety to spike. Where were Laedere and Ranjiri? Again, he cast his gaze about whilst swiveling his ears, praying that the pair would materialize from the distance and offer their protection. What if the two pegasi that stood so sure and strong before him deemed him unworthy? Where could he go? The sun beat down upon his back, it's unrelenting heat offering a small comfort in the face of what possibilities lay before him. As the stranger spoke, introducing himself as Gaucho, Rift felt his anxiety bloom and his mouth opened and closed silently; what sort of introduction was the Sultan looking for? Panicked, Rift chose instead to bow, his lips brushing the earth while his wings fanned out from his sides, careful not to graze the shallow dunes and stir up sand. As he straightened, he met the kindly eyes of the Sultan - his Sultan, with any luck - and offered a hesitant grin before summoning the courage to speak. "Hello, Lord... Uh, Ki-no, Sultan Gaucho. I'm Rift." He cleared his throat, damning himself all the while, "Ranjiri and Laedere found me in the threshold. We escorted a yearling back to the World's Edge, but somehow, I think maybe in the mists of the forest, we got separated." He looked about forlornly for a moment, "I'm sorry I lost them.. I was hoping I could join your ranks."

even the most powerful darkness can be defeated by the tiniest spark of light
I definitely didn't take a detour when we were supposed to be escorting Rift back to the Throat to see if Dragomir was in the meadow. I definitely did not do that because that wouldn't be very responsible since I was supposed to be helping keep an eye on the newcomer. Only ... I did detour through the meadow and I did look for Dragomir and I didn't find him and then I couldn't find Rift or Laedere. I had told him where to go to find the Throat, so the place I could figure to begin looking was the Throat. If I managed to beat them there I decided that I would just wait until I saw them and ask what took them so long, no big deal. But... when I finally made it to the Throat Rift was already there and he was standing face to face with Zenobia and Gaucho. I sighed and I began my descent. I landed next to Rift and folded my wings against my sides, doing my best to hide the grimace as I folded my wing that had been injured in the god fight. "Sorry." I murmured to Rift. "I had to land because my wing was bothering me then I couldn't find you or Laedere." That was a believable little white lie, wasn't it? It wasn't entirely untrue. "I'm glad I told you were to go so you didn't get too lost." And I reached out to bump my muzzle against his shoulder if he let just to show that we were on good terms to Gaucho. "Hi Gaucho." I couldn't help it, I smiled warmly at the sultan then I looked at his daughter. "Zenobia. Laedere and I found Rift in the Threshold and we invited him come home with us." "Talk." This is something All or nothing
RIFT A vaguely familiar scent rode on the breeze for a moment before the sound of hooves alighting on sand filled the air. Turning to his right, the scarlet brute nearly cried out in relief at the presence of his friend. A grin toyed with the edges of his mouth as he nodded a greeting toward her and listened as she spoke. So she had lost Laedere as well... His brow crinkled in concern for the flightless mare, but he couldn't dwell upon her absence for too long. Returning Ranjiri's shoulder-bump with his own on her neck, Rift nodded absently at her words; no apology was needed, they had ended up in the right place despite the bumps in their metaphorical road. The sorrel gent listened as Zenobia spoke, content to allow his company do the talking - he wasn't too sure he could depend on his voice to be steady in the presence of the massive Sultan. In fact, casting a sidelong glance at the inferno-draped monarch, Rift felt a spike of anxiety lance through his consciousness; how were his companions not cowering before the terrifying giant that stood so casually before them? Mumbling something about wanting to inspect the inflammation at the base of Ranjiri's wing joint, Rift turned and gently tucked his head under his gold-limned friend's wing, effectively hiding his face from the intimidation factor. His ears swiveled at the sound of Zenobia's inquiry and he felt his stomach twist ever so slightly; would they blame him for her absence? He felt nauseous at the thought of suspicion being cast upon him so early by those he wished to call family. Poking his nose out from under Ranjiri's feathers for a moment, the brilliantly colored coward spoke quietly. "I haven't seen her since the mists of the World's Edge. If you would like, I could stand vigil for her tonight. It's the least I could do." With that being said, the thin stallion retracted his nose and once more found himself draped int he relative safety of Ranjiri's wing. |
