The blistering temperature of Tallsun conjured up blurred heatwaves that floated above the horizon. The desert she was leaving had played many tricks on her, teasing oasis paradises and welcoming shade. It had been several days and the mare was growing impatient and angry, which was not like her – yet given the circumstances she allowed herself to be upset. Sleepily, Sanaa picked up a lethargic jog to make her way to the small bundle of trees that seemingly grew wider as she continued onward. ‘Please do not be another façade.’ Her hopes dwindled stingily like her thirst had been; being let down too many times before this and to see a whole forest erupt from the earth perceptibly seemed too good to be true. Tan lobes pricked forward as the fragrance of pine and cedar wafted in the ether. The aroma became a tad overwhelming, causing Sanaa to get light-headed and at the right time a mild but humid breeze masked her nostrils; and again all she could pick up was the dreary smell of sand and stale desert air.

Approaching the outskirts of the forest with dark patches of sweat decorating her elegant bodice, Sanaa slowed to a walk, her cranium launched as high as it could muster. She imagined the intoxicating aroma of flora swirling around her in vivid emerald greens and honey-dew wisps. Often her creative mind would conjure up fancies of auras that surrounded plants, wildlife, and other beings. Always with a sense that it was true and that she had yet to grow enough to really see the colors – she felt them and their presence and that is all that mattered to the mare. As she entered the darkening shade from the canopies, the temperature meagerly dropped a few degrees. Cloven hooves stepped gingerly onto ground that was riddled with dead pine needles and creeping mosses, quite a dramatic difference compared to the sand she travelled on to get here. Still feeling as though this were a mirage, Sanaa directed herself towards an adolescent pine tree, scraping her barrel against its rough bark. The sensation was real, she continued and the bark littered part of her damp coat.

It was quiet in the thicket, occasionally a bird would call to another yet Sanaa knew the heat was keeping most creatures hidden until later hours. Wandering between the shrubberies the maiden quickly found herself near a small pond, or perhaps it was just a large puddle? Regardless, she quenched her thirst, sucking in the water as though she had never drank before. Sepia tendrils fell forward as she did so, the ends landing in the water and floating on the surface, one tickling her muzzle as she gulped. Raising her dome back into the air, her mane dripped against her nape and gave her a passing cool down that then gave her the idea to just wade through the water to move forward. At its deepest point the water reached just under her shoulder very briefly and then it was back at her knees. The vixen’s body looked as if was eloquently dipped into water, the top half of her still dry in contrast to the bottom half that was slick and darker now.

Sanaa observed the world around her, taking her time to witness each and every vegetation she passed; noticing the pale honeysuckles that hid amongst jade leaves and the bumblebees that hummed by her, their pollen sacks full to the brim. Her mind was artfully crafted, she believed everything had a place and purpose, and that it was important to notice the little things. The mare’s heart beat with delight as this new land offered so much that the brutal desert did not, and that Dorobo had never shown. Cobalt orbits shone with optimism, a fleeting thought of her sisters passed through her mind. Oh, how she wished they could see this – her anticipation to a new life was beginning to blossom and soon she could leave the past behind her.
