ERIS AND HISTE

What was that distant glow in the distance? Why was the strange feeling of warmth spreading through her body? The blue orbs were turned to the horizon, studying the strange glow that was lighting up the world around her. Of course for a creature that liked to lurk in the dark, the sight greatly displeased her. The sun was rising before her very eyes, it was as if it was signalling the rein of her rein. What a ridiculous thought though, The Asylum had started in the light of the sun, the numbers had just kept growing. Watching the sun rise now, the monster of the dark, let the spite drain from her body. Knowing that she should appreciate this moment the golden mare paused to watch the sun finally rise again. How long had it been since light had graced the land that was her home? Far too long, the light brought good things after all, their home might become a little easier to live in, their family could finally look upon each other for the first time in the light. Good things might happen in the light, when the sun rose her scars were shown off to the world, other began to truly appreciate the danger that she posed. In the light she would be able to see the blood that she spilled onto the soil.

Her medium length mane and tail flipped over in a sudden breeze that Eris had not expected. Still, her orbs remained on the slowly rising orb of light. For a while the mare wondered if the orb was going to make it. It's slow process over the lighter sky filled her with doubt about the success of the orb's journey. Was the endless night truly over? With a sigh the golden mare turned her eyes away from the sky, why did the world have to wake up when she was just starting the very beginning of her rein? In the light, they would be able to see this mare for who she truly was. No longer would she be able to hide in the shadows every time she wished, now she would have to wait for nightfall. Now she would have to discover what it was like to hide during the day again. Walking down the sand the mare began to enter the freezing and rough waters that made the ocean. Shivers ran over her scrawny body, her hair and coat was grimy. Water and mud from the marsh had almost turned her hair into a fine clay, it stuck to her filthy coat. Dried blood was cracked around her mouth and dried thickly, caked onto her hooves. Her shoulders also rolled underneath dried blood, she had draped a wolf's pelt over her shoulders to display her power. It's life's blood ran over her body, filling her with joy and power.

She slipped into the water, her body ached with the biting cold. The sand worked as a scrub, working to remove the blood, bile and mud from her coat and hooves. With each pounding, dunking wave, the golden mare felt more alive...more...cognisant of who she was, of what she wanted to do with her life. As the water washed away her wrongs, the mare could not help but merge herself deeper into the ocean. As the water gushed over her shoulders, the Blood Empress' eyes flicked over to the rising sun again. This time she was not annoyed by the presence of light, rather she found herself elevated to face the challenge of light again. This time she would face the day with a different attitude, this time Eris was ready to let other see her for how she truly was. What did it matter if they didn't like her?! A girlish giggle tumbled from her lips. She was Eris, the Goddess of discord. Eris, the blood Empress. She lead a herd that honestly...not many others could lead. The golden mare was able to laugh in the face of things that called themselves 'terror of the night.' Eris was the only terror that lurked in the night. Other's were just horrors that lurked in the nightmares of children, Eris was so horrifying that she could not be imagined. Instead she existed in reality, always lurking out of sight.

Freshly scrubbed the mare left the water with a wicked smile on her face. A fresh smell of blood wafted under nose, what a shame. She just got clean and already something was luring her towards them. Bored however with hunting alone the mare left the scent fade into the wind to be carried off to another hunter that lurked in the night. Liking to work alone, the mare hated it when she felt the desire to work along side someone else. Eris felt as alone as she could be though, with the sun rising behind her and the water's calming in the presence of the day, the mare felt it was her cue to leave. The challenge of daylight awaited her, now she was ready to face it. Making her way up the sand she paused to turn back and grin at the sun, here she made a promise to the world. "The Night always returns."

Just what in the hell was she doing?

Histe lurked in the shadows watching the mare that called herself 'Blood Empress' and 'Goddess of Discord' as she stepped into the ocean and began to scrub herself clean. Her ears tilted back against her head and her lips pressed into a thin line as she wondered why she would do that. Did she not find pride in the amount of blood she wore on her coat? Did she not relish the sight of blood caked on her hooves? One could not look down without seeing it and knowing that she was a machine designed for slaughter. And did she not like the way others looked in horror at the blood that coated her lips? Histe, herself, quite enjoyed the looks of confusion, which were often followed by understanding, disgust, fear, then resignation that their fate would be the same. Just another bloodbag to play with.

She remained still, thinking to herself that the mare was stupid to venture into the water for a bath. If she wanted Histe could have attacked her right then, overpowered her, and held her under water until her lungs filled with the salty ocean water and she became nothing more than just another bloated corpse. Who would lead then, hm? Histe had no interest in leading a herd, but the idea of destroying one completely was very appealing to the brindle mare. And if they found out who did it and came after her? A wicked grin curled the corners of Histe's mouth. well, that would be all the more fun, wouldn't it?

As the sun rose it was becoming increasingly difficult to remain lurking in the shadows, so Histe chose to reveal herself before she was given away by the traitorous ball of fire. She stepped forth, her well muscled frame caked in the very substance that Eris had just spent copious amounts of time washing from her own frame. In the time it had taken her to wash the blood off she could have already been on a hunt and possibly made a kill. What an utter waste.

"You." Histe said as her pale eyes locked on the Blood Empress' face. "Are very strange."

"As if you have any room to call anyone strange." Merikh's voice interrupts and Histe turned her head to glare at the cougar who had arrived with fox hanging limply from his jaws. "Shut up!" She snapped at the cougar, watching him as he dropped the fox onto the sand and licked his maw. "Game is small here. The meadow was better."

Histe cast a sidelong glance at the mare who was her leader, wondering if she would be up for a hunt, but then again Histe and Merikh worked better alone. "What are you thinking?" "That she would only get in the way." Histe replied coldly to Merikh's inquiry as she now glared at Eris.

"She thinks she's better than you." Came the whispering voice of Histe's mother. "Look at how clean she is and how filthy you are. She is better than you."
