AND IF LOVING HER IS HEARTACHE FOR ME
AND IF HOLDING HER MEANS THAT I HAVE TO BLEED
THEN I AM THE MARTYR - LOVE IS TO BLAME

It wasn't long after his arrival to Helovia that Miykael had received offers to join two different herds; and it had only taken what seemed like mere moments for Miykael to pick one. The dunskin and white Pegasus had never been particularly picky about where he lived so long as his future herd-mates held similar values to his own. Unfortunately, his decision here was a difficult one - both places seemed to be a fantastic fit. Knowing he had to make a choice, however, the dunskin tobiano stallion had followed his heart. Following his heart was not something that was unusual for him. In truth, it was something he had done for as long as he can remember - and it hasn't truly failed him yet.

He had been all politeness in declaring his choice; never one to burn bridges or intentionally make enemies. Being on friendly terms with everyone he meets is, perhaps, his most infantile or naive ideal but he strives for it nevertheless. Solace seemed to respect his choice and was quick to move on. Miykael watched the green-haired stallion disappear into the trees before turning back to Xanthos - the stallion that had recruited him to the Edge. The Pegasus asks for directions to the Edge; longing to explore a bit on the way without burdening the other stallion. Once that was settled, the two parted ways.

Miykael made his way carefully and slowly through the vibrant trees of the threshold. Some of the foliage he came across was familiar - he has been around for awhile, after all - but there were certainly many plants and flowers that he had never seen before now. Each one fascinated him, distracted him from arriving in his new home but his exploration would likely serve him in the future should he remain within Helovia. The sun sank lower in the sky as dusk was nearing to settle over the lands but Miykael took little notice of the change. Each step he took brought him farther west and just before the daylight completely faded from the sky, Miykael came across a massive glass wall unlike anything he had ever seen before. For a moment he stands in awe, admiring the craftsmanship and wondering precisely how it had come into existence.

Moving towards the great wall, the stallion reached his nose close to it though he is careful not to touch. Inhaling softly, the dunskin tobiano finds nothing familiar about it. After a brief moment, he steps back. Glancing to his left, he notices the expanse of wall appears to be endless but a glance to the right reveals a hole - a doorway of sorts to pass through. Miykael moves towards the opening but pauses just outside. The scent of Xanthos - and many others for that matter - is strong here; leading him to believe that he had found the World's Edge. With his wings folded tightly against his sides, the stallion whinnies loudly - calling to those within. No words escape his lips - it is merely a call for anyone with the authority to welcome him to the herd (or turn him away if they so wish.) By now, the darkness of night had settled in, and though he had been invited to join World's Edge, he wasn't about to assume that he was welcome to cross the border.

Standing in silence, he wonders if anyone would come. If not, he muses to himself, he would stay outside the wall tonight and try again in the morning. If all failed, he hoped he might still be welcomed in the Foothills.

With the coming dusk, Kahlua could not help but feel uneasy. She always did. Though it had been months since the sun had returned to Helovia, she still feared every night that it would not rise again in the morning. Therefore, on this particular evening, she had chosen to walk along the borders of the wall she had created in the not-so-distant past. In particular, she chose a spot near one of the campfires. Using one of the bundles of wood that Dragomir had removed from the path of the wall, she fed the fire so that it would burn more brightly. Around her, shadows began to dance through the trees as the sun finally set beyond the cliff wall and she couldn't help but shiver. Would she ever feel safe in the darkness again?

As she stood there by the fire, watching the dancing flames, she began to wish that one of her friends was near. Resplendence always made her happy. Brisa and Alysanne would have been welcome too. Or Kaj. The winged man had made her feel safe in the darkness before, and also in the terrible after math of the invasion. Still, she could not call to them every time she was frightened, could she? Shaking her head, the girl sighed and took a step closer to the flames. She rarely wished that she was anything other than herself, but tonight she wished she was more brave.

Suddenly, a whinny sounded. It was nearby, in the direction of the wall. The girl shuddered, wondering who it could be arriving her at night. Instantly her mind went to thoughts of the terrible beasts from the North. She was not smart enough to think that they would not announce their presence and instead would have just barged through the unfortunate opening in the wall. However, despite her fear, Kahlua wondered if she could do something to continue to prove herself worthy in the eyes of her leader. If it was an invasion, could she stop it? Perhaps not on her own, but she could sound the alarm. Right?

Cautiously, the painted girl picked up a trot and made her way towards the hole that allowed passage from the wilds of Helovia into the Edge. When the opening finally came into view, she slowed to a walk and moved as close to the wall as she could. She saw no one. They were still outside? Nervously, and ever so slowly, she peeked her head around the corner. There, she found no unicorn, but a pegasus. In the darkness she found it hard to make out his color, but certainly his wings of the purest white stood out from the blackness all around. He was from the Throat then? Suddenly, she was not so frightened. And a friend in the darkness did plenty to ease her soul.

“Hello, friend. I am Kahlua, the Glazier. What brings you to the Edge tonight?” Her voice was bright and dancing, though hints of her fear bubbled through at times. A simple, welcoming smile sat on her lips. Her emotions were fleeting on a normal day, so now that she was looking for anybody to save her from the night she was more than happy to accept this stranger as a welcome friend. With every second, her initial distrust of him faded away. Perhaps someday she would learn the lesson that not all strangers can be trusted. Hopefully, this was not that day.

As the darkness of night settled over the land, Miykael was amazed at how warm it remained. The air here is thick, heavy with moisture - though, part of that is certainly due to the nearness of the coast. He could hear the sloshing and crashing of the waves from here - though they are softer tonight; faint. Perhaps more noticeable is the crackling of the fire on the other side of the glass wall. He waited out of politeness and respect - as he always did and always would do; waited by the obviously defined boundaries despite the fact that he had received an invitation. Miykael had never found any reason to be rude and likely never would; he is, in truth, all kindness.

Even death could not change his heart.

When the sun disappeared and the moon, ever graceful as she was, cast a dim glow across the night sky - he found himself still alone. Miykael stands in the silence - patience coursing strong throughout his mind and body - and after another quick glance around him he shifts his gaze to the clear night sky. Here the stars seem brighter. Here the land seems more pure - more pure than Nocturne, at least. Oh.. Nocturne. That wretched place. In his determination to find Alysanne he had forgotten about where he had come from - forgotten his children, the few friends he'd found, and he'd forgotten his initial purpose (to protect the earthly creatures from the demons). Had that not all disappeared when he left Nocturne? His children were still there, that much could not be undone. The reach of the demons had not gone outside of Nocturne or so it appeared.

His solitude, however, did not last long. Though he had been lost in his thoughts, his ears were still alert and tuned in to any changes in his immediate environment. The thudding of hooves against the ground - soft and faint at first though growing louder and more distinct - lifted him from his thoughts and launching him back to reality. Lowering his gaze once again to look through the gap in the wall, waiting for the other to appear. The hoof-steps grew louder then slower before they stopped completely and within moments he saw her - peeking cautiously around the wall. He smiles when he sees her, practically glowing with his typically friendly nature. Even in the darkness she reminded him of Aly; only this one is darker with more black than white and her eyes are blue.

"Hi there!" his voice, though deep and tinged with a hint of a brogue, is sensual and warm. "I'm sorry if I've disturbed you. I decided to explore a bit before arriving and lost track of time." he adds with a sheepish grin. He sensed a bit of her fear and hoped he could set her at ease. "I'm Miykael and it's a pleasure to meet you, Kahlua. I met a stallion named Xanthos in the Threshold; he invited me here." he explains, his blue eyes light and sparkling in this moonlit night. Miykael falls silent then, waiting ever-so-patiently for her response.

Hi there! The stallion's strong voice met her ears and warmed her soul. It gave her the strength to step forward and display her whole body in the doorway- the doorway that she had made. The thought made her smile grow brighter. This wall was her child, and perhaps it was best that way. The wall did not require care and attention, at least not the same way a foal would. Repairs would need to be done, of course, from time to time, but expecting another to count her daily for life or death was, at best, a sentence to a long and miserable life. Kahlua was a free soul, an unchained wind that would rather spend her days chatting and befriending anyone than ooohing and ahing over a foal. Perhaps one day her mind would change, but she did not see it that way now.

“No, of course you haven't disturbed me,” she chimed in quickly after he apologized. It was true, after all. What did the girl have to be doing of any importance? Especially now in the evening. His comic grin made it easy for her to settle a smile on her face, though, and leave it there. Her face was bright with wonder and excitement at getting to meet a new soul. Miykael. The name repeated in her head several times, trying to help her brain keep name with face. She wasn't good at much, but this she was good at. And then he mentioned Xanthos. So she was wrong. He was not of the Throat, but rather a recruit, a new member. If she could have smiled any brighter, the moon would have retreated in fear that the sun had rose. If there was anything she loved as much as her trade, it was new recruits to the Edge.

“Of course! Well forgive me for blocking your way then. Please, come in!” She stepped back, allowing him room to pass through the opening in the wall. She was lucky this time. Walls didn't do much good if you just let strangers pass through the openings, but Kahlua was hopelessly trusting on the worst of days. If he claimed he was a new recruit, then that was what he was. Besides, she knew the desire to explore. How many days had she spent wandering through the wilderness after her acceptance into the herd? “Did you like what you saw, exploring?” She waited with eager ears to hear his story. These social interactions were what she lived for.
