 But you feel blue sometimes
And you're blood bleeds red like mine
The grass is greener on the other side
What I'm saying is we're all alike

For all that the mountains seemed quite near, it was nether the less a long way back from the threshold, especially on short, skinny legs. It was easier, however, in the grip of tallsun to travel on such a demanding trail. The drifts of snow were few and far between with the relatively clear weather relieving him of hindrance. Along the way, Sacre had often turned to his new 'friend' and pointed out landmarks, normally places he played or pointing out the Aurora Borealis when night finally did fall upon them. He had also offered a brief respite by the Frozen Arch before continuing onwards again. By the time the boy spotted the entrance into the Basin it was already daylight, cloven hooves clicking softly against the hard surface of the only road into the land of spark and time. Familiar scents were a welcome blow through his nostrils, Sacre may currently have his reservations about his home, but he still couldn't help feeling happy and safe here. He doubted that would ever change no matter how far into the darkness it fell, there was still the light of his childhood memories remaining.

Immediately, he began heading for the lake to cure the thirsty after effect of gruelling mountain travel. It was also a nice place to simply stand and talk. Walking past places he used to play with Roux, he smiled fondly, the barks of Aramis his father's bonded coming to mind too. Would the alabaster colt he had escorted would create similar happy memories here.

The lake appeared after several bends and Sacre eagerly trotted forwards only to halt before it's glittering edge to take a long, well earned gulp. Fresh and icy, water from the mountains was like no other in the crimson child's mind, especially when all you could see was endless blue sky. Raising his head, droplets sliding down his maw and dripping back into the pool, he made an attempt with ocean blue eyes to find the other colt's gaze, a smile forming upon soaked lips. "Welcome to the Aurora Basin, Crake!" His charming tones laughed happily "this is much better than those stuffy trees, wouldn't you agree?"

thoughts ____________ speaking

They had been walking all night. Or almost, at least. It felt like all night. There were a couple stops here and there and Sacre had been rather pleasant as a tour guide. Or he would have been if he had a more willing tourist following him. Crake was still waiting for the ritualistic sacrifice to begin so he really didn’t give two shits about the twinkling lights in the sky or that land mark or another.

Most of the trip was spent in a grumpy silence, broken occasionally by passing remarks because despite the fact that he was pretty sure he had been invited home by the weirdest colt ever – at least he was going somewhere. Somewhere that had a lot of others, which was a big plus. Safety in numbers, right?

Unless those numbers were intent upon gorging him with their horns and casting him out so that the wolves could tear him to bits.

Well, fortunately Crake was smart enough to figure out that he had a better chance at avoiding a bloody fate if he was somewhat pleasant.

He kept pace with Sacre easy enough, though this was a lot more activity than he had been used to (like hell he was going to complain though) and perked up at the sight of the lake. Without reservation he almost threw his entire head into it and came back with a shock – COLD! Still, he was too thirsty and drank greedily.

Regretting it, of course, because no sooner had he tried to gulp down the entire lake did a great flash of burning pain attack his brain. Well that was nice. He certainly felt more awake now. And just then, his ruby-accented companion was all charming and happy.

Ruby. That was a better name than ‘Sacre’.

How does that even work? Shaking away the ‘you’re crazy’ look, Crake managed a bit of a smile as he looked around. “Yeah I guess it’s alright.” How enthusiastic was he supposed to get?

Now that they were here, he was probably going to have to come up with something else to say.

“So, Ruby, like… what is this place? You know, what type of herd is it? Is everyone like us?” The two colts weren’t exactly identical in many respects, but they had one feature in common – Crake even flourished his head a little bit to highlight it. That odd little protrusion that they had poking out of their foreheads.

Horn?

Yes! That's it.

Sacre watched as the colt of alabaster drove himself straight into the icy pool, making the blood stained boy cringe, but he said nothing as Crake drank the water like it was somehow going to disappear in the next few minutes. When his fellow traveller raised his head it was with the same, lacklustre expression he'd had for the whole journey which made Sacre wonder exactly what made him look that way at such an age, when the world was larger than life. He thought about asking, but perhaps it wasn't a good idea, it might ruin the tentative 'friendship' ties they'd formed. Instead he turned his attention to the new name he'd be christened with. Ruby. For a moment, the boy was utterly confused as to who he was talking to and for the slightest of seconds the colt was sure that Crake was talking to himself. It was a few more breaths later that it dawned on him that in fact, this snowy boy was addressing him. Sacre didn't quite know how to respond to the first time of being given a 'nickname' of sorts, he decided he rather liked it and happily answered the questions presented to him.

"We call it the Aurora Basin and yes, most are like us. I'm not sure if any have lived here before who were not of our species, but I have only ever seen our horned brethren. For that reason our ties with other herds are not... Great. Be careful where you walk and what you say. You will always find safety in the Time God's land however." He spoke as if slightly lost in thought, Sacre had never been one to take to d'Artagnan's ideals of superior race, though after his trip to the edge there was a part of the boy that could... Sympathize a little with his father's burn for revenge. In truth, he had not yet decided what road he wanted to take or if he had to chose a road at all, why not high tail it across untouched terrain. Darkness existed everywhere, even in his own beating heart; the boy didn't quite know whether to ignore it, defeat it or embrace it.

Pushing thoughts aside, he turned his attention back on Crake with a curious look. "What will you do now?" Sacre had grown up on this snowy mountain, no matter what bad things happened it would always be home, it was difficult for him to understand what it was like coming in from the outside. Yet, he tried.

[sorry for the delay love!]

Unpleasant terms with the other herds? Gotta be careful where you walk and what you say? What had Crake got himself into. Okay, he was pretty curious though – he liked the idea that he had at least found a safe place here in the Basin. The members could treat everyone else like shit but if they thought he was a-okay because he had a horn then hey, little effort required on his part – fantastic.

And then of course there was the matter of the “Time God”. Well that just sounded ridiculous. Crake had never heard of gods before and he was debating whether he even wanted to ask about them right now. Demons, sure – fanciful creatures with scales and antlers and fins and glowing hides – perfect, wonderful. But Gods? Or were they just funky little creatures with a little sparkle of magic that wanted everyone to bow to them? Clearly Ruby here had fully digested whatever the tale was.

Okay “clearly” was an exaggeration. All Ruby did was mention it but Crake wasn’t above making assumptions. It made things a lot easier – no hassle required! Make up your mind with minimal information and BAM you’ve got a lot of free time on your hands.

But while he was vaguely curious about what the hell a Time God was, it was the next words from Ruby that really got the white and purple colt’s attention. He straightened up a little bit and looked at his funny little friend with an incredulous look and he replied obnoxiously. “What the hell do you mean ‘what are you going to do now’?! How should I know? I’m in a strange place within a strange land and with an even stranger colt. Well actually you’re not all that strange just nice and that’s weird. But maybe you’ve got some actual interesting stuff lurking.” Okay that was a mess. First he got too worked up and now he was getting side tracked.

Inhaling deeply, as though this whole endeavour was putting an incredible amount of strain on his rather small brain, he answered the question a little bit closer to how it probably should have been answered in the first place.

Remember, Crake, gotta be pleasant…ish. You’re little and new and purple and all of those combined make you stick out like a cabbage in a bathtub.

Dusty purple eyes drift from his company to the land around them. Couldn’t hurt to get acquainted with it, right? He could do that. “But I guess I’ll go explore. So, uh, thanks for the home, bud. If you could just point me into the direction of something worth seeing that would be just fantastic.” He’d get to –insertinterestingthinghere- eventually he was sure but for the moment he might as well take advantage of his company as much as he could.

Maybe he and Ruby could be friends but if their friendship was hinged on this first meeting it could probably said it wasn’t going well. Crake ran hot and cold and Ruby was actually a decent guy.

Oh goody, snaps for Ruby. Whatever, I’m adjusting.
