Sunny days brought smiles to the girl's heart and face, her happy life within the Edge going as well as she could ever hope it to. Life was good. She had been made Glazier, amends had been made with Aaron, their numbers were growing and Kahlua was making more friends every day. Yes, things were going better each day, the constant darkness that had plagued them through winter and spring seeming to have disappeared from the land. Even the girls dreams were coming easier at night, the nightmares fewer and far between, the good dreams more numerous and joyful that ever. Could she ever wish for a better life? Perhaps, if she thought long and hard about it, but she was no thinker and not accustomed to such internal contemplations. For now, she was content, and that was enough for the simple girl.

With an easy heart, the girl made her way to the glass wall, the only child that had ever been a part of her life. She had walked the internal portion of the thing so many times, she practically knew it by heart. If there were faults, she was unaware of them. Therefore, today the girl decided to walk the outside of the wall. Exiting the doorway she had made in the center of the massive creation, the girl turned to the left and walked along the shimmering expanse. Her eyes took in every rise and fall of the glass, glancing up to the pointed shards that stuck out from the top to deter others from jumping, and down to the base where it met the ground that Destrier had plowed. Still, every portion she took in was perfect in her eyes. But that did not mean perfection. Taking a deep breath, the girl continued to walk patient but lonely steps, along the wall's length. Eager eyes searching both the wall and the land.

Glass.

It was a glass wall that stood before her now. But certainly not right in front of her, yards, she could see it's shimmery surface in the air, it rose high, she could barely see the top. She was now staring up in amazement. How could they build up like that? It was different and Cypress liked it. But, could it shatter into a milling pieces at a breath? Hopefully not. What was it for? Keeping others away? Cypress wanted to know a lot of questions, but they all had to wait. Sadly.

She looked as far she could see, high in the sky, then she let her eyes travel down, all the way down to the- it was a mare! Her eyes focused on a mare of beauty. For Cypress didn't know what breed this mare was, but she was of pure beauty. She reminded Cypress of Aly, the girl she met in the Heavenly fields. What a nice mare she was. Oh, Cypress loved the sweet smile that was always on that face. But now, she faced a new mare of back and white beauty. "Hello." The rose spoke in shaky words toward the mare.

Suddenly a thought came upon her, one of which she hated. It was that what if the mare was a lure? A trap? Her beauty would lure the stallions, past the glass wall, only to kill them and take their gullible lives away. But no. That was not what would happen. This mare looked real. Too real. Cypress toke a few steps closer, to reassure herself. "Hello" she repeated looking up at the girl with emerald gems.

As she continued to carry on outside of the wall, Kahlua found her mind as empty as ever. With no troubles to bother her for more than a few moments at a time, Kahlua often had little to think about on her travels. It was likely better that way. After all, what would she think about? How happy she was? How fantastic it was to live a peaceful life? Her thoughts would have become boring, even to the happy girl, soon enough. No, it was better that her mind was as empty as it was. Luckily, she would not have to be alone with her vacant mind for long.

A voice broke the silence, peaceful and soft- a filly. For a moment, Kahlua frowned. She never was one for children. They were too needy. The Glazier could hardly manage to take care of herself, let along something so small and innocent. No, she usually avoided children if she could, if only to save herself from being guilted into becoming a care-taker. But she could not avoid this. The child had spoken, knew Kahlua was here, and she was approaching. As the filly repeated herself and stepped closer, Kahlua sighed. Her frown disappeared, left with a rather neutral expression.

As for the filly's horn. Initially, Kahlua was concerned. Was it some Basin monster from the north, even if just a miniature one, come to harass the peaceful lifestyle that reigned in the Edge? A deep inhale allayed her fears, however. The girl did not smell of the Basin. She smelled of nothing- just the wilds. “Hello, friend,” she offered in return, looking down to the little one, at a loss as to what she should say next. Her voice sounded confused, rather than it's usual dancing tone. “Do you like my wall?” Of course, it wasn't exactly her wall. She had built it for the Edge and her family, but she still liked to think of the thing as hers. It gave her great pride to know she had created it. And what harm could it do to call it hers anyway?

Cypress was staring up at the glass, it's beauty undeniably different than anything she had ever seen before. She loved to watch it shimmer in the sun's light.

Her mother once told her about how glass and sun can catch fire. Couldn't that happen? The sun hitting the glass creating spark? Or was fire just a myth? Cypress didn't know. All she knew was that it was a different sight than anything else she had ever seen.

The mare had heard her voice after the few moments that passed them. A slight frown grazed her face. Uncertainty flash through her eyes, of Cypress and herself? Was she scared of the little one? Surely not. This mare seemed strong enough to defend herself. She shouldn't be scared of Cypress. She was weak. The mare's frown left her emotions, they turned to an ordinary expression upon her face.

"Hello friend." The mare spoke, her words were soft, and kind. But Cypress knew better than to walk any closer to the stranger. The mare spoke once again, her eyes were cast down at the filly. "Do you like my wall?" Was it her wall? Did she make it? Of course she did! She must be someone of the edge. She didn't smell like the wild parts of Helvoia Cypress had seen. But she did smell different. Cypress wondered if it really was her wall. Should she ask? Or would it be rude?

The little filly decided it was a no. It would not be rude. It would just be her asking a question of the wall. "How did you make it?" Her round eyes searching the mare's face for such an expression. An expression of anything. But she didn't see anything. Yet.

How did you make it? Kahlua looked at the girl patiently, blue eyes taking her eye, silence brewing between them for a moment and the finally she began to laugh. The sound was joyous, open, welcoming. It was not mocking or rude, it was a simple exclamation- a proclamation of her joy for life. It danced and rolled among the trees, echoing off the wall and filling all the open space around then. The painted girl laughed because she had had a sudden revelation. It was just an inkling of an idea, a quiet whisper in her brain, but a thought nevertheless. The filly before her was just as wide-eyed and curious as Kahlua herself was on so many occasions. What was so wrong with that?

And so, instead of sounding confused, the girl sounded bright and happy as she spoke again, looking down to the filly with a more kindly expression than she had offered before. “The moon goddess gave me magic,” she explained finally, touching her nose to the plum colored moon amulet that she wore around her neck in reverence for Lady Moon. “I just think of what I want and... And then I ask, and it comes to life.” It was hard for the girl to explain what she did because she wasn't entirely sure herself, but when she asked it happened, the magic flowing through her like a river, bursting forth from her to command and shape the mists to her will.

And so, with an easier heart, the girl chatted on happily enough. “Welcome to the Edge, by the way. Have you-” she paused for a moment, blue eyes searching for the filly's green ones. “Have you come here looking for someone?” She was going to say “have you come here looking for a home” but she was afraid the filly would take it as an offer of mothership, it never occurring to the daft girl that the filly probably already had a mother and a home. Regardless, she had taken the safe route. Better safe than sorry.

Cypress still watched the mare as she responded to her earlier question. It was fascinating. A Moon Goddess? What on earth was that? Was she making things up? Thinking she could fool the girl? If it was true, she could never. But she might. Cypress couldn't dare herself to think that this fine mare would lie to her. She spoke again. Words of truth? Cypress didn't know. But it sounded so real! Cypress wanted to see magic and it's powers.

Unsureness glittered across her face. The rose was sure she didn't know it had shown. But Cypress was now feeling more unsure by the second. She hardly knew this mare, and she seemed to be lying to her. But she seemed so elegant and true. Cypress just couldn't think she was a lier anymore. Her words were truth, Cypress decided as she looked her up and down once again.

She spoke on, not letting the smaller girl speak, even though she broke off in the middle of her sentence. She had welcomed her to the Edge? Was that the name? Why did it sound so familiar? Azarel! The little colt she had met. His mother called the Edge their home. The mare also asked if she was looking for someone. "No" she replied, even though her first met lived here. "Is it true?" she continued to look into the mares eyes for any sign of dis-honesty.

Kahlua was not a liar. She never could be, even if she tried. The words would just never formed in her mouth. It was a strength, in some ways, but for the most part it was a fault. In the hands of the enemy, she would surely fall if they tried to torture any information out of her. Luckily, it seemed that the herd knew better than to trust the simple girl with any sort of real knowledge. What information she did have about the herd was limited to names of those in power, their goals, and other such trivial facts that were common information throughout the land.

The other thing Kahlua was not good at was reading faces. So even if the child had stood there for hours with an unsure look on her face, the black overo would not have thought anything of it. For a moment, as the filly said that she was not here looking for anyone, Kahlua herself became confused, wondering why the young one would be along the borders. However, it seemed like the glass wall drew strangers like honey drew flies. She had met so many on the borders as of late, horses that had no business being where they were. She did not mind- so long as they were not the unicorns from the North.

Is it true? Kahlua furrowed her brow for a moment, wondering what exactly the filly was talking about, finally deciding that she was thinking of the Moon Goddess and magic. “Very true,” she offered finally, with a decided nod of her head. “I am Glazier here, the head craftswoman. That is how I got my magic.” And then, suddenly, she realized she had no idea what the filly's name was. “Am Kahlua. And you?”

"Very true" the mare replied. It was then when Cypress knew she was not a lier. This was not the type of horse that would lie. She seemed to act like Cypress a little. Not lying, never bing rude or harsh. Just being herself. Cypress liked this new friend she had made, and she intended on seeing her again. And maybe become friends like she was with Africa. Africa was one or her best friends here in Helovia. And Cypress couldn't say she really had any friends that were foals, only Azarel. he was one of her best friends too. But she had not seen him since they had parted.
The lady spoke again, telling the girl that she was a head craftswoman. That was true. She said it so truthfully. And anyway, how could she have made this without... magic. Then, she introduced herself in the name of Kahlua. Her eyes strong and truthful once again.

"I am Cypress" she said dipping her head to the now named and ranked Kahlua. "I love your work Miss Kahlua." She said bringing her eyes to the center once again. "Can you make everything?" It was a different question, and Cypress had slight regrets of saying it. She should have been more direct. She meant to ask if Kahlua could truly make everything, from glass roses to harnesses. Could she make parts of the body glass? Like that woman with the white smudged face. Her hooves and horn were glass. A beautiful sight. But Cypress did not correct herself. She only stood in wait for an answer to her question. Or another question for her to come.

Cypress. Like with so many others that she had met, Kahlua repeated the name to herself several times, throwing it about in her head, trying to match it with the girl's face in her permanent memory. There were very few things the painted woman was good at, but remembering names was one of them. Thankfully. She had to have some sort of talents.

Looking at the filly, Kahlua was, for a moment, transported back to her own childhood. First to come to her mind was Fuhrer, of course, her twin, her brother, her strange friend and enemy all in one. And then darker thoughts, thoughts of all the times she had flaunted herself to men in an attempt to win their favor, what little time she had spent with her father in his cathedral of darkness, of the present but distant love from her mother. And finally she thought of the fire, the scorching flames that had wrecked everything she had ever known and cared about. Of her flight from Avalon to Helovia, of her time spent alone, of her crossing the borders and finally meeting the stallion that would take her to her new home and family. Funny how the image of one so small can bring back memories so big. Kahlua shook them off with a smile as she dipped her head in return to Cypress.

I love your work, the filly offered and of course Kahlua could not help but smile a little brighter at the compliment. “I can make anything I can imagine, I suppose, as long as it's glass,” she started with a laugh, thinking for a moment of all she had made. “I've made armor, a basket, a headband, a storage box...” she trailed off as she felt like she was rambling. “And quite a lot more, too. If you want to learn,” she started, almost instantly berating herself for thinking such things, but it was too late, as the words were already coming. “You could always join us and become an apprentice.” Well, too late now. The words were out there and so the mare watched the filly patiently, shifting her weight but otherwise remaining in place.
