General Th'orqui was an ancient kingdom that had been in the world since the beginning of time, or so the stories said. It was a country based on monarchy, with the same Family in power for generations. The crown was inherited by the oldest son and passed down through the male line. Most royal children were placed in arranged marriages which united the Royal Family with blood outside the royal line. This prevented inbreeding and, for the most part, kept bad blood out of the rulers of the land. For the most part, the ruling class of Th'orqui was considered benevolent and kind, choosing to rule more out of kindness than out of fear. The Royal Family took advice from the Ancient Council, a small group of high-ranking peers whose job was to assist the rulers in making the best choices for the kingdom. The Ancient Council had a great deal to do with the revolution, for they took advantage of the Family's assumption that they wanted only to help the kingdom. In reality, the last Council was filled with greed and desire; its members took as much under the table, so to speak, as they actually passed on to the kingdom's storehouses. This left many severely overtaxed and under-compensated for their goods and services, in turn causing the masses the become angry and resentful of its leaders, while the Family was left unaware of the conditions present in the kingdom. The Council fed the Family lies and continued to take all they could get from the kingdom's inhabitants. A small rebel group formed, and though they did not take an official name, they were often referred to simply as the Anarchists. They preached that the time for monarchy was over, and that the kingdom would be better off without any ruling class at all. They wished to do away with slavery (which was the basis for most hard labor in the kingdom) and redistribute the wealth so that all races, genders, and classes were equal. They quickly gained followers due to the trying nature of the times, and eventually they had enough numbers to attack the Capital. Once they had invaded the citadel, their primary goal was to wipe out the royal line and leave the servants and slaves to join their cause. Though no one knows exactly how many they murdered in this attempt, it is well known that some of the Family escaped their executions, and many of those that had been in service simply didn't know what to do without their lifelong jobs. Ultimately, the Anarchists succeeded in overthrowing the monarchy, but they also destroyed the country. Most newly-freed slaves were taken into captivity once more, marked as they were by the brands on their hips. Many servants chose to find new families to serve, refusing to take any of the money offered to them. Crime was rampant, as the Anarchists had destroyed the criminal justice system as they had fought to take the Capital. Many began to move away, running from the evil and carelessness. The Anarchists even dispersed upon realizing that they could not control the land without breaking free of their beliefs. Refusing to do the latter, they were unable to do the former, and eventually gave up. Th'orqui is now no more than a memory, its lands left to rot and its citizens scattered. Class System The Th'orquian class system was the basis of how an individual would be treated. It is heavily based in wealth, with any mobility between classes being dependent on the acquisition or loss thereof. Though such mobility was very uncommon, it was possible, though its results were generally only seen by generation. In other words, it was extremely unlikely for a peasant to become a noble, but a merchant might have a chance to do so. Familial rankings, then, were changed very slowly, if at all.
Despite these guidelines, there were certain positions that are considered "classless." For example, priests were considered to be of a higher power and therefore not restricted by the class system. They were treated with the utmost respect and reverence by all classes equally, and served all classes equally without negative social consequences. Healers were also considered classless, and were often smiled upon for spreading their care among the classes, although it was viewed by the nobles as charity work. Mages did not belong to a certain class, either, though they were primarily utilized by the Royal Family and the Nobles, who could afford their high prices. It was generally thought that because mages were capable of such destruction, it would be dangerous to offend them. Therefore, they were quickly accepted and assimilated into the higher classes regardless of their origins.
