Darkness overcame her. Shadows darted over her, Farynn took to the
skies, screaming in unison with the blood curdling cries of those who
had been trapped. No one had foreseen this coming, especially her. It
was odd knowing that she had no one to care for her anymore. No one.

Her large wings beat as she moved and dipped in the skies, finally
landing in a foreign land. The trees were like aliens, and she felt so
utterly alone. Her head was lowered in a submissive, scared position
as she cried out. She was still so young, barley a yearling in age.

I hover above the trees, hoping to capture the attention of any
Pegasus making their journey to Helovia. That is when I saw her. My
blue eyes lock on to the whirling, graceless figure in flight,
seemingly run forward by terror alone. If what Voltaic had told me was
true, there was plenty reason to be terrified. With a quick flip of my
wings, I launch forward, trying to close the gap between us before she
dives into the ocean of trees below. When I am just about close enough
to call out, though, the small frame drops like a stone into the tree
tops.

Mimicking her movement, I too head downward, trying to gauge where she
would be on the ground below my line of vision. Breaking through the
tree tops, I came out with a few twigs clinging to my feathered wings.
Much more difficult for a full grown mare to slip through than the
body of a yearling. Preening the areas carefully, I dislodge the
unwanted members before I hear a shrill, broken cry. The cry of a lost
child.

My heart, which beat rather steadily again these days, almost stops at
that familiar cry. Onni had also made a similar call to me in the
chaos of the falling cliffs. Unable to answer her before a massive
boulder separated us forever. Without thought, my hooves bring me into
a fast trot in the direction of the call, blue eyes scanning
frantically for that tiny body.

In a mixture of trees and shrubs, there stood a girl, barely a
yearling, all alone. Quietly, I walk toward the painted form with
light eyes - so similar to my own daughter, were it not for the light
wings on her back. “It’s alright,” I say, my voice a soft coo as I get
close to her. “I will protect you.”

They're gone. They're gone. That was all she could think about.
Everyone, their bloody screams, the mass confusion of those who tried
to escape the wrath. Another whimper escaped her body as she moved
forward. Suddenly, there was a mare before her. Farynn's eyes widened
as she moved closer. She wanted to bolt, but at the very instant she
moved closer, Farynn crumpled to the ground in front of the mare. Her
matted coat was dull, and her eyes lacked any luster. "I just want to
go home." She whimpered. Lying her head against the ground. It was the
first time she had been able to stop in days. She was so utterly
exhausted. "I just want to see my friends. I want my mom." Even though
she knew her mother was dead, there was something comforting about
thinking that she maybe was there.

The child’s eyes widened in fear, but mine soften in reply. Her small
little form falls toward my own, landing on the ground, crushed before
me by the weight of her fear - or loneliness. With a gentle muzzle, I
reach down to touch her small shoulder, wishing to shield her from the
pain of loss. Her words, though, give me little hope that I could
manage such a thing. All of those who fled from Isilme would be
forever changed, their home ripped from their hearts, displaced for
the sake of survival. Some of them, though, still did not survive.

Bending my knees, I slowly lower myself to the ground, covering the
small frame with an extended wing. Such a small body would lose heat
in this dreary winter on the ground. The words of a child cut through
the space between us, clutching my heart and squeezing it tightly. I
want my mom. Had my own daughter such a wish before her end? I look
down at the crumpled form below my wing, my blue eyes warm, moist with
the tears I was too proud to shed.

“I am Kri,” I say, my name rolling off my lips in a calm manner,
though a quavering of sadness was laying in the back of my throat. “I
may not be your mother, but I will not fail you.” Such an empty
promise, but I had every intention to keep it.

Her wing covered her painted body, and Farynn leaned into it with a
relaxing sigh. It was the first time she'd felt safe and at home. Her
quivering body began to relax as the mare spoke her name. Kri. The
name was from there forth committed to memory. This mare had saved her
from herself. Had she been left alone a moment longer her brain might
have tore itself apart, and she could have been at the bottom of a
trench somewhere. "I'm Farynn." She whispered finally. More of her
shaking subsided. "Kri. Where am I supposed to go?" Her words were
oddly hollow. Lacking any sort of emotion. It was a question she
wondered about. Where was a girl like her supposed to go in a place
like this?

A nuzzle of the small warm body against my side is a relief. The child
seems more comfortable there, underneath my extended wing and hugged
against my frame. My face turns to look down at the young girl, her
painted body strikingly similar to that of my lost daughter. Even the
pale eyes which reach out to me, they sting my conscience; had she
searched so desperately for me?

The name uttered in that fragile voice reaches my heart, even before
my brain registers the spoken word. I smile gentle, a tad sadly, as
the corners of my mouth cannot fully uplift as they normally would. A
sorry pair, we made, standing amidst the Threshold in a shroud of cold
winter and pine trees. I listen carefully to her question, though I
was saddened that there was no sure answer I could hand her. The
Pegasus, a band of outcasts, had no solid home for such a child. The
look in her eyes was hopeful, though, and I could not crush that thin
life line.

“You may come with me, Farynn,” I say, my voice a calm coo. “I will
give you a home, well protected. Until then, I will keep you safe with
my own strength.”
