[OPEN] under a very black sky

Colors explode under your microscope
But just deny as it’s all black and white
I lost my mind under a very black sky
We live our lives mostly pretending
You have a secret, you’ll never know mine
I wear a disguise under a very black sky

Thud...thud...thud...thud... massive hooves beat the ground in a steady rhythm as the giantess stormed out of the fading trees on the meadow's edge. It might have been mid-day but one would never guess it. The sky was growing darker as a storm threatened overhead. The trees she was just leaving rustled and the fading grasses of the vast meadow rippled in great waves as the gusts began to howl. None of this disturbed the great black mare as she strode into the open, there was little that disturbed Rhanna, and less that she would admit to. She was a champion at ignoring her problems, always had been, and when she was forced to face them she met them with an angry word and a kick in the jaw.

As it was, she didn’t think she had any problems at the moment; she didn’t mind the stormy weather, she actually quite liked it; storms kept weaker creatures under cover and out of her way. Rhanna didn’t have any patience for interruptions right now, her mind was tumbling over the events of the past few days. She’d come to this new land, Helovia, Ricochet had called it, and she was eager to explore it. The buttermilk stallion had met her at the threshold and recruited her to his growing band of equines -- not that her loyalties were completely cemented yet. He’d seemed capable enough, and his views on the races ad fallen in line with hers, even been a little more proactive, and she was intrigued enough to want to learn more about the goings-on here in Helovia. Much to the ebon mare’s consternation, the stallion had disappeared shortly after their meeting without giving her much of a clue towards discovering her new comrades in the Empire.

So preoccupied was she, that the mare didn't notice herself approaching the wide waterway, and the first frigid splash of water had her stopping dead in her tracks. Pulled out of her previous train of thought, she stared down at the rushing water, eyes glazed over as if the didn't really see it below her. Her thoughts had been forced back the the last river she'd crossed: wider than this one, faster, and colder in the depths of a winter storm. She remembered her struggles on the banks of that river, hundreds of miles and nearly a year behind her, and she remembered the still little body that she'd left there.

Instantly thrust into a black mood, the mare snarled, more at her memories than the water that had sparked them. "Don't feel it. It's doesn't matter! You're better off without..." her low voice rumbled out as she spoke quietly to herself, trying to beat back the feelings she hated, trying to ignore sense of loss that made her angry, and her own failure. 'You poor thing.' she'd heard it enough as a colt, plain and ungifted in a herd of pegasus and unicorns where magic ran in the blood, but she'd be damned if anyone said it because of the foal she'd lost. I am not to be pitied. Never that! It was the week one, it's not my fault nor my concern anymore. That's what she told herself. That was what she tried so hard to believe. Picking up her feet again she crashed her way through the wide river, emerging on the southern bank as the skies loosed a torrent of rain and a mighty crack of thunder rattled the sky.

The hurt the head forgets, The heart will always remember

She was so far from the cold north, so very far. The Spider Child was a foul beast, with an unquenchable thirst, and a hunger that couldn’t be satisfied. From her lips escaped an incredibly loud and mournful wail. Emotion had dissipated; all that remained was her malevolent starvation. Jorogumo had a hole she desperately needed to fill. At her feet rolled in that darkness that had once consumed her, it was the very essence of her being now. Her once dark and sleek coat now faded, matted, and caked with dirt and blood. The spider legs that emerged from her sides were curled up and pressed against her stomach.

“Flesssshhhhh,” the child said to herself in a hushed tone. Without any hesitation the child moved forward, and despite the decaying flesh she still moved at average speed. As she sped up, the darkness cloud met her pace, as she moved toward her prey it slowly moved with her.. Jorogumo didn’t care about the thistles smacking into her leg. All that she knew was beyond her lay mortal flesh, those that could satisfy her deep cravings. Distorted memories of playing here came to mind. Stupid Boy, she would have to look for him later and devour him.

She could see a dark figure in the distance. Jorogumo released a loud wild shriek before she came upon the dark mare. As she did with the first of her prey, she released a large wad of spit, aiming toward the mare’s face. As she drew closer to the mare, she reached out her teeth in hopes of latching onto the flesh of the mare’s neck. As she moved, her spider legs stretched out completely to where they were almost stick straight. Once her first strike was over she galloped a short distance away before the mare could attack.

“May the darkness consume you!” A fit of giggles racked her frame until she collapsed on the ground and rolled about. “Soon you will be liberated and be just like me!” Yet another girlish giggle escaped from her lips as she stood up and watched

She had been so caught up in her own tumultuous mood, so used to not having to watch her own surroundings, that the ebon mare didn’t notice the grotesque little thing approaching her. The savage shriek had her spinning her head around to bring the miniature monster into view, but she was met with a great glob of sticky saliva straight to the middle of her face. Rhanna let out a shout of disgust and thrashed her head in an attempt to clear her eyes of the foul-smelling gunk. “What the fuck?!” She cursed, low voice filled with rage. She felt a sharp little stab at her neck. Teeth? She swung her massive head in an attempt the hit her assailant but it met nothing in its arch.

She heard a high pitched voice as she managed to clear her vision and swung herself around to glare at the filly standing and mocking her from a short distance away. Was it a filly? For a moment her rage was blocked by shock; the thing was horrific! Even when it was shrouded in darkness, Rhanna could see the dull, matted coat and the legs, too many legs, erupting and twitching at her sides, and four….four eyes? The thing prattled something about being liberated. Rhanna didn’t know what she meant and she really didn’t care. Fury rose in her as it writhed on the ground and then laughed at her again.

“GET BACK HER YOU LITTLE BITCH!” She charged towards the demonic little thing, fully intent on squishing it. Heavy hooves falling hard and fast, though their noise was partially obscures by the howl of the wind. Rhanna hated anything unnatural, and this many legged monster would have sparked her aggression even if it hadn’t made it’s little attack. She didn’t give a thought that she should avoid the creature, just charged straight ahead with the intent of eradicating it.

The hurt the head forgets, The heart will always remember

Before the spider child knew it, the mare was chasing after her. Jorogumo thought back to the last time a mortal had attacked, and it had resulted in the loss of one of her extra appendages. The thing had grown back, but she would not like to feel such pain again. Despite the mare’s superior size, Jorogumo was still faster, even with her bone skinny legs. At one point the child slipped, and she couldsee the mare heading toward her, but promptly the child evaporated into a cloud of black and reappeared a short distance off.

“This is fun!” She called over to the other mare. “I surely hope that you find yourself immersed in the sweet darkness.” A loud giggle escaped from her mouth as she thought of the mare putrid and foul just like herself. This reminded her of the game with Stupid Boy. My! She needed to go out and find that idiotic colt and drag him down into the darkness with her. Maybe gnaw on his flesh for a bit to ensure that he would be truly infected. Or she could infect Vadim! Then they could go around infecting everyone together, my, that would be such fun.

“I do hope you appreciate the gift that has been given to you.” Jorogumo grinned wolfishly, and with that she vanished into the cloud of darkness and began her search for flesh elsewhere.

the trick the devil did was make me want it
The great black mare hurtled towards the monstrous little child. She’d been in a bad mood to start, trying to forget another little black body when this one had appeared so suddenly. This one, so demented, seemed to taunt her bitter memories of the past as much as its shrill voice taunted her in the present. Bitter and angry, Rhanna was bent on crushing in under her massive feet, but her size slowed he down and the little thing zipped out of her reach. When the filly slipped, the mare let out a triumphant bark of laughter, she’d catch it now for sure, the in a cloud of smoke and darkness, her target vanished.

Rhanna skidded to a halt, sliding a bit on the damp ground of the riverbank. ”this is fun!” She heard the giggling voice from over her shoulder and wheeled around to face it. She gathered herself for another charge, but it didn’t come….Something was leaking into her brain. Or maybe her brain was leaking She stood staring as her body seemed to stretch and compress inside her dark skin.

It was agony!

Each beat of her enormous heart was like a hammer’s blow. It crashed in her ears and sent shockwaves through her system as The Sickness spread. It stemmed from the bloody little hole in her neck, the flesh there seemed to sizzle and putrefy in an instant and from there it spread. Surely, This was death, surely she had been cast indo the depths of hell. The Mare thrashed, the entirety of her massive frame writhing in pain. As the flung her head, chunks of her long waving mane flew out and the bones that held on her tail seemed to dissolve and the whole thing fell to the ground with a thump. Where the wad of saliva had hit her face the skin tore with a sickening riiiiippp and from the skull underneath erupted a series of sharp spines, each connected the others by a thin layer of membrane. Her last, vicious thrash ended with her left foreleg slamming into the ground, sending it trembling, the flesh upon it fell away, leaving the bone exposed and emitting a horrid stench of decayed flesh; the mare made to more movements.

It was bliss!

The creature that had been Rhanna stood still as the last wave of The Darkness enveloped her; its shadow was as sweet as summer berries, as comforting as a mother’s embrace. ”I do hope you appreciate the gift that has been given to you.” rotten ears pointed forward to hear the filly’s last words, and the Dark Mare opened her eyes (great milky orbs where once had rested two black pools) in time to see the beautiful little creature vanish into darkness once more. Her jaws spread into a wide smile that leaked a mixture of blood and her own liquefied insides and spoke: “Thank you, sweet child.” The Darkness had taken her.
