d'Artagnan
March 29th, 2012 at 4:44am

The grass quivered beneath his cloven hooves as the red stallion lead
his first prospective recruit to meet his frosty king. He held the
same authoritative manner he always wore, his face a mask of
concealment as he let no emotion escape from it. Lotus, the mare that
followed behind, still carried the scent that made his fur stand up on
his spine. This was another reason he kept his eyes facing forwards,
she was a demon to tempt him so yet she didn't appear all that
threatening. d'Artagnan shook his mane and continued the last of part
there journey in an easy silence.

The scent of Mauja became stronger and d'Art stopped partly for
respect but mostly because he didn't want to lead a complete stranger
straight up to the king. Instead, he stood between two trees and
called out "King Mauja? I have someone here who'd like to join our
mighty herd. She seeks your permission to do so.” Mighty? d'Art had to
stop himself from an ironic snort. He knew that it wasn't always
numbers that made a herd strong... But then again, the Worlds Edge
wasn't exactly teeming with life. This mare was only the start,
d'Artagnan knew there had to be more unicorns like he and Mauja out
there.

[ooc; Feel free to step around d'Art, with my extra work shifts I
don't think I'm gunna get much chance to reply]

I nod as d’Artagnan explained his rank and situation. My thoughts were
confirmed; these lands it seemed, were ones blessed by the Moon God. I
cringed inwardly, though showed nothing on my exterior besides my
fatigue, saddened that it appeared in order to stay with my brethren
species, I had to conform to their religion. Oh Eathern Lord, please
do forgive me if I must blaspheme and mention not your name but that
of another – please know that I only seek to please you. While I know
other worldly powers exist, you had taken care of me my whole life, my
whole life I have been shaped and preened to sacrifice the life of
another and drench your soil in the blood you seek to continue
protecting me. How could these others not understand? I would have to
seek him out, and explain myself, and offer him my own blood in
exchange for his continued protection. I sighed, resigned to my fate,
as I followed this brutish steed further into the land.

It amused me that one with such a stoic air and warrior build could be
pushed around by another stallion so easily. I suppose I was used to
stallions of lesser intellect, ones where the “King” of a herd would
depend upon who could throw their weight around more. Though perhaps
this King Mauja would fit the mental image I hosted, and simply be
King because he was a bigger and stronger stallion than d’Artagnan.
Maybe he too would try to fight the pheromones that permeate
constantly around me. But then again, maybe not. Most stallions would
drop some of their inhibitions, especially if they spent more time
near their source – hormones were not the sort of thing to ever lose
potency, but rather, the more you consumed, the faster the effect. My
leonine tail lifted slightly from the ground as I halted behind the
large blood bay stallion, and I meekly awaited my judgement.

Mauja the FrostHeart

He came when he heard his name called by none other than his trusted
plague doctor. Mauja approached the two, his head lifted and his ears
forward. "d'Artagnan." He greeted his doctor before turning his gaze
to the mare he had brought with him. The stallion inhaled then snorted
at a sudden urge that came with breathing in the mare's scent. One of
his ears tilted back and he flicked his long white tail.

"Welcome to the World's Edge." he finally said. "I am Mauja the
FrostHeart, king of the World's Edge herd." As if she didn't already
have that much figured out. He studied the mare as she stood there
with his doctor. "I assumed that since d'Artagnan has brought you to
me you're interested in joining my herd." He snorted again, fighting
the urge to step closer to the mare. "What can you bring to my herd?"

ooc:// sorry it's not that great but i didn't want to keep you guys
waiting any longer :T

With a curious interest I awaited the revered arrival of the King. I
found it peculiar that the King could be summoned forth, and like an
obedient dog, he came before us. It was much the same with my mother,
a leader is no leader at all, but rather a slave to his minions.
Though they listen to him and follow him, he had to give his
worthiness back to them just as much, if not more to hold his
position. I could see now, as I compared the physique of the two
stallions, that his was a position of politics as much as brute
strength. Immediately I respected him for that, putting aside my
prejudices for now, trying to view the two before me as sentient
beings rather than simply donors. It was difficult for me, let me
assure you, but I managed it. Nodding my tiara to him as he introduced
himself, my chin bumping against my chest, I absorbed his words with
due care.

The FrostHearted one questioned me, and I should have expected as
much, but as it were, I still had to apply some time to my answer.
“Thank you, for the welcome. I am Lotus.” Of nowhere.. I added
silently, a sadness creeping over me as the thought of never being
able to return home finally settled upon my cranium. And now my fate
rested with these stallions.. I pushed the thoughts away for now, my
fatigue was making me ponder on dark thoughts too much. I smiled
sweetly at the stallion as I constructed my reply for him. “Why, I can
bring a feminine influence to this mighty herd of yours.” I spoke
lightly, jokingly, not meaning to cause offence. But one must admit
that having two stallions recruit you to a herd says something about
the female population, doesn’t it? Though my nostrils could detect the
faint traces of others within the lands, there was little movement,
and the trees certainly didn’t hum with forest life.

“My horn is at the service of the herd, to you, King Mauja. Whatever
you will have it do, it shall be done. I can also bring my womb sir,
and give new, pure life back to the lands.” I spoke more sincerely
here, all jokes left behind. The thought of allowing one of another
species to touch me in that way made my skin crawl, but only because I
knew not what or how they behaved. I wanted to learn more about them,
but did not see myself getting anything very thrilling from such
research into their existence.

Mauja the FrostHeart

Mauja listened with interest, his blue gaze never leaving the
appealing mare as she spoke. Her answer to his question was of no
surprise to the stallion. He expected any newcomer that d'Artagnan
brought to him to be one that viewed the Unicorn race as the supreme
one. He was not so sure what she meant about bringing a feminine touch
to the herd. They had a few mares already in the herd, though he was
disappointed in the ones they had. They were all too peaceful, but
they were useful. The peaceful beings helped add to the illusion that
their herd was a peaceful one.

One of his ears tilted back as the mare then said she brought her
womb. "I don't know what other herd you've been in, but in this herd a
mare's value does not lie merely in her womb." Mauja said. "Should you
decide that you want your role to be that of a broodmare then no one
will stand in your way. It would be wonderful to have pure foals in
the herd. However, should you decide you fancy another job, be it a
diplomat or even a warrior, you will not be held back."

My svelte ears listened to the stallion, the lotus flower switching
from my left ear to the right ear. I was surprised by his words,
despite my earlier attempts of losing all prejudices, it seems I was
still expecting to be treated, well, the way that my herd used to
treat stallions once we were done with them. I was suddenly overcome
with guilt, for here they stood before me, welcoming me to their
lands, and here I stood, meekly trying to act my way through this
meeting. Perhaps I didn’t need to act? I smiled gratefully at the
stallions, I certainly would not reveal exactly how those of the male
gender were treated by my herd, and without the support of my sisters
I would not dare myself. Even with the support of my sisters, I had
learned a lot in a short amount of time, since Jereh’s death. So many
views had been shattered, I was picking up the pieces of my mind
slowly, but they were going back into place differently, my viewpoint
has been forced to shift.

“I thank you once more, King Mauja.” I began, my voice carrying more
definition now, the façade of a meek little mare dropping slowly – not
completely but slowly. “I am experienced in the ways of planning
ambushes and defending myself and my brethren from harm.” I spoke with
a confidence that wouldn’t allow them to deny my history. “Should you
find these qualities of use, I would happily allow them to be
employed, and would join this herd as a warrior. However for now, I
would like to find quiet nook to rest my tired bones, if you would be
so kind?” My delicate tiara tilted, my bearded chin and leonine tail
sweeping to the side in the light, chilly breeze. It would be nice to
be done with all these interrogations, and have some time to sort out
the mess that was my inner being.

Mauja the FrostHeart

It boded well for Mauja when the mare finally began to speak with real
strength. It, of course, made him wonder why she had not before. He
did not like the idea that she had changed herself to try and fit into
his herd. It made him wonder briefly if she was a spy sent from
another herd, but then he brushed that thought aside. They had not
spoken a word of The Plague to her so they had nothing to hide. They
would just have to be careful around her until she proved her loyalty.

The king found her next statements rather interesting. "Planning
ambushes, you say." He murmured more to himself than to her. He was
silent for a moment before nodding his head. "It would very much
please me to have you as a warrior in our ranks." He smiled warmly at
the mare despite his icy appearance. "We need more strong mares such
as yourself." Flattery always seemed to make the mares warm up rather
quickly. When she spoke of resting Mauja nodded again. "Rest and eat
your fill." He said to the mare. "You deserve it."
