Mother says that I was named for the moon and my brother was named for
the sun. Just as the moon and the sun are so drastically different my
brother and I are as well. We are twins yet we don't appear to be
twins. My darker coat is a gift from my father's line as is the
twisted silvery horn that sits upon my head. My brother's fiery red
coat is just like my mother's and it is easy to see why she would
choose to name him after something as brilliant and glorious as the
sun.

I do not like the sun, though. I much prefer the quiet tranquility of
the moon and because of this I often roam during the night while my
brother sleeps. The night is when I feel the most at peace and the
closest to the moon I was named for. My mother has spoken of Gods that
rule over Helovia. I don't know if she's ever seen them or if she's
just heard of them, but there are three she has spoken of. The God of
the Sun, the God of the Earth, and the Goddess of the Moon. It is the
Goddess of the Moon that I wish to see, but I am hesitant to ask for a
visit from her because even I deem my simple wish to see her as petty.
Surely she has greater things to worry about than a child's wishes.

I lower my head and I sniff at a patch of clover. The little white
flowers are what really draws me in, not because of their taste but
because of the scent. In the moonlight they even look like little
stars. It's funny how just as I think the clover flowers look like
stars fireflies begin to drift across the field proving me wrong.
Nevertheless I smile as I watch them. I find that here in this field,
standing under the glow of the moon and among the fireflies I feel
completely at ease and at peace with the world around me. I close my
eyes and wish for everyday to feel this way.

Anthym

In the dark of the night, treads the frail little obsidian figure of
Anthym. Lonely as usual, the oddity wanders this warm spring night,
perturbed at its warmness. She much prefers the cold chill of winter,
or of snow-capped mountains, for only there does she not feel alone.
In the chill, she becomes queen of a grove of peach trees crafted from
ice. She controls the flavor and melt and which way to drift the trees
to the sun to age their taste into luxury. There, she can be lost and
not have to be found.

That time was over now though, there was no more ice to be found and
Ice Trees would be far more difficult to create now. It was time for
the Rejuvenation, the eating up back to a healthy state. She'd already
accomplished much in the few weeks of spring which had already
occurred. Already her hide was becoming reflective and her body
regaining shape. She almost looked normal...just still a bit frail.
Frailty was okay by her though because she didn't much care one way or
another.

Life bloomed all about her in the comforting embrace of the night. How
anyhorse ever said that there wasn't life and comfort in the night was
a mystery to her. With bright emerald eyes she gazes about her as she
chomps on clovers, a rare and tasty treat. It is not long before
another horse, a filly rather, arrives in her little private meadow.
Rather unsure what to do, Anthym sticks her face back down amongst the
cloves and nibbles as she sidles aimlessly closer to the newcomer. Its
not a conscious sidling of course, she makes it seem as if the female
hasn't been noticed yet and keeps on chomping. She wonders in silence
what the black little foal will do.

Mirage

Though slightly tense moment occurred in a flutter of confusion and
misinterpretation of language, Mirage felt a maternal inkling or need
to follow the youth whose birth she and Akaith had attended. The
little filly Aylin was a unicorn, but she was named for the moonlight
which lit the world in silver, and the little black mare was drawn to
this. Cloaked, her bodice was mostly invisible under night’s dark
blanket, she wandered the meadow of thistles, being sure to step
lightly and carefully so as to hide her whereabouts as well as avoid
becoming entangled in the barbed weeds. Akaith was elsewhere tonight,
always connected of course, but physically absent.

“Evening girls.” The obsidian one now stood before them both, having
shed her illusionary cloak. Her tones were soft, honey-warm, her
golden eyes glittering as she eyed them both gently. One, a young
mare, whom she had met before, Anthym – the youth had helped her
dearest friend Torasin in a time of need. For that, Mirage would treat
her with due respect and kindness. The other, a youth, barely a
newborn, Aylin, Mirage knew very little about her, she was so young
that it was even possible to guess that she was still an innocent of
the world. A small but honest smile coursed her lips as she considered
them, before she threw her tiara skywards, as if aiming for the moon
that hung in the sky above them, and let out a small whickery laugh.

“By the moon’s light – would either of you like to play tag?”

When I opened my eyes again there was a strange mare that was inching
closer to me as she grazed. I watched her, thinking about how her
steps seemed to be calculated as she came closer. She was definitely
strange from the two horns on her head to the green spots on her.
Strange and yet beautiful in her own whimsical way. She continued
closer and I continued to watch her, my small head tilting slightly
and questioningly at the brief glances that seemed to come my way
every now and again.

A short time later another mare arrived and took my attention from the
green speckled one. How I had not noticed her before she spoke was
beyond my comprehension, but I smiled at her because I felt as if I
knew her. In fact, I was almost sure I had met this dark mare before,
But I didn't know where. My ears lowered as I thought long and hard
and tried to remember where I had seen her before. I only got
fragments of memories that I didn't know I'd had. My mother's white
dipped legs, my brother's still wet body, my father's deep resonating
voice, and the faces of several others and, finally, something golden.

Just like that it was gone and I was left staring at the mare who was
now looking up to the moon. As she asked to play tag I continued to
watch her before finally nodding. "I would like to." I said moments
later before turning my head to the speckled one. "Would you?" My
already quiet voice had become even quieter, barely above a whisper.

Anthym senses the little filly notices her arrival and frowns, for
she's still unsure what to do at this midnight meeting. Then the black
mare, the one she'd met while helping the nice looking stallion when
he was hurt, showed up from no where. How had she done that?, mused
the thin mare.

The black older mare spoke then, in a surprisingly young voice, and
asked if they would like to play tag. She had heard of the game, but
never played it, being the awkward filly she had been. The little
filly, already so much more fluent than herself replied yes. Quiet tho
it was, that reply. Anthym looked to her and smiled brightly as she
nodded her head. She perked up after that though, knowing all parties
involved would play with her, and bounced a bit as she replied
musically to Mirage, "Yes, I would love to play!" and then bounced
playfully towards the little filly with a gentle touch aimed at her
shoulder.

Amusement laughed silently behind Mirage’s golden, glittering eyes as
she watched the surprise at her appearance cross the faces of the
younger ones. True, Mirage was a far older mare, not only in years but
in life experiences too. And yet she was a playful mare, her world
often made lighter by the bond she had with her dragon. She looked
upon the youngest of the two, and noted the similarities between her
and her own sister, Rishima. Children of the moon indeed. She
confirmed to herself, her warm gaze awaiting the response of the young
belles. Though Aylin looked a bit blank at her, confused as to who she
was, Mirage had to remind herself that she was but a newborn, and may
not remember the circumstances in which they had first come across
each other. Aylin’s father had not understood the celebratory way in
which Akaith had intended to greet the gathering, and took it more as
a threat than anything else. Mirage did not want any ill waters to
flow between them, and she hoped Aylin’s opinion of her would be
formed on her own, not on the impressions given to her by others.

Positive responses obtained, a melodic laugh rolled from her tongue as
her neat hooves carried her towards the fillies. After Anthym touched
upon Aylin’s hide, Mirage darted between them, trying to give the
smallest one time to touch her hide should she be quick enough.
Prancing and pawing at the air, and danced an elegant, happy dance,
simply relishing in the youthful innocence that was her soul, playing
with theirs.
