Blood.

It dripped down the stallions rear legs as he walked or limped, rather, passed the heart of Helovia. The last time he had been here felt like an eon ago. So much had changed, and yet somethings remained the same. His fury over Phaedra's betrayal, for instance, burned like a sickly candle flame in his mind, blazing to the forefront at certain points and refusing to be extinguished. Only the satisfaction of violence would quench his thirst for revenge.

Where was I? Oh right, blood. It wasn't his, don't worry. It belonged to one of the deranged that seemed to originate from the darkness that was swallowing whole sections of the land he had come to know over time. Intimately familiarizing himself with the scope of the land when he became crippled. Not being able to run and let the ground be eaten by his stride, zipping past in a blur, made him memorize almost every crevice of every corner of this place until he felt as though he had been born here.

He limped along, the blood of the creature trickling from where it had splattered on his hooves and clotted in his tail. Foolish parasite had tried to sneak up on him. While his kick wasn't as powerful as it had once been, he still felt the satisfaction of a hit as his hooves crunched into a skull that splintered surprisingly well. Blood had splattered over his hind quarters and he had wheeled around to rear and crush the maggot beneath his front hooves, which were also laced in crimson. he had not bothered to stay and allow more to show up, but had moved on, vacating the scene fast. Coward? Maybe, but Tio knew the difference between being wise and just plain running. In his current, limping state, he couldn't be expected to fight more than one off at a time.

Maybe two at the most.

A whole horde? Forget it.

Thus, when he finally circumnavigated the heart enough to find the place he'd been told of, he slipped into the darkness, wearing it like a second skin and letting the semi-cool darkness ease his sweaty neck. As he walked, he became aware that there was an uncomfortable froth between his back legs. Man, he was REALLY out of shape. He could smell other horses, but since Tio was making a habit of keeping himself known only to the few, he avoided the crowd at all cost, instead limping into one of the off-shooting passages that led into a maze. Since Tio had nothing better to do, he began to explore the place. The shimmer of stardust on his coat glittered in the light of the lava. It did this when hit by light if it was not being used to make him invisible, or maybe it could not do it's job because he kept moving and breaking the shell of refracted light.

Either way, the effect was a prism of color that fell on the stone wall, faint because of the warm, faint light of volcanic magma that shifted a few coats of crystal away from where Tio stood, safe from it's certain death. He eventually came to a new cavern, a chamber smaller than the one where the other horses were gathered, but big enough for at least 3-4 horses to meet and be comfortable. Sighing, he stopped to lower his head and drink from the small pool that had collected in the center. His mind was blank as he did so, allowing a restless sort of peace to settle on his thoughts. He was safe here- safe from the darkness that threatened to engulf the land, and from the infected maggots that crawled the ground now, looking for others to consume and infect. He could find amusement in how they thought they were going to succeed.

He also gained amusement from how the other horses crouching in here thought they could fight it. There was no hope, and those who were foolish enough to leave would meet only death, despair. Their relatives and loved ones were being eaten. If Tio were given the chance, he would probably fight alongside the shadow. If only to see Phaedra's face if they were to meet in that circumstance.

Tio leaned his head back, a sick smile rippling across his face as his thoughts went into overdrive, imagining himself as an infected and meeting with Phaedra. He would not be satisfied with simply infecting her- oh no... he would humiliate her. His body shivered in anticipation and when he realized what this fantasy was doing to him, he shook himself out of it and tucked in his pride once more. No. His mother's voice echoed through his mind. "A dominant male remains in control of all of his urges. No matter the temptation, he must always be strong and only breed when it is beneficial to his ultimate purpose. Unnecessary foals lead to sloppiness, and sloppiness leads to mistakes."

As always, she was right. Yet he had deviated from that advice on more than one occasion. It had seemed easy to do when he was young, but putting those words into practice was nigh impossible, and he had only recently found he was able to manage it. As he stood still, the stardust in his coat glimmered and invisibility began to spread across his rump, seeping like tendrils across his body until he was engulfed in it. At the same time, he realized he was not alone- the sound of hooves sounded farther down the tunnel and he wondered if the stranger had seen him vanish.
