I know your wavering heart, intimately</style>

Vadim had warned her of the shadow creatures, and Nayati had seen the entirety of the Dragon's Throat herd traveling in a massive clump, behind them coming the Foothills. She knew their scent anywhere, even if she was no longer within their ranks, for it had been her only home since she was rescued by Svetlana in the winter of her first year of life. Together the herds created a well-trodden path to...where? Wherever it led, she knew it would take her to Vadim, and she was more than comfortable with admitting her curiosity where it concerned the silent colt. Not that much didn't interest her, of course, but that went without saying. Everything interested the brilliant young mare, but for now she knew her safety from whatever was chasing the muttering, wild-eyed herd members, was more important. It was not just her life that was at stake, after all. Looking down at the ivory orb she had been carrying since the day the Gods had granted it to her, she smiled softly. Finally, she would have a friend, someone who would not leave her side. She hoped. She did not want to keep the child at her side if he or she did not like her, but with what she'd observed in the bondeds she'd met, it wasn't like that.

Trailing on the sidelines of the shuffling horses, she frowned curiously at something in the distance. It seemed almost like a battle...she moved closer, away from the protection of the traveling masses. It led her into the dry grasslands of the heart, and she swallowed her scream as a demonic...thing bit a literal chunk of flesh off a screaming equine. It was half-eaten, made of rotting flesh and bone, with sunken in eyes and protruding limbs. Nayati turned before it could look at her, her old panic clawing at her chest until it burned, and she ran towards the herd horses once more. She didn't even look twice at the hole they all began to disappear under, soft and frantic voices alike echoing from whatever chamber they had entered. Carefully as she could in her state, she lowered herself into the depths of the earth as well, clutching the egg nervously. Down here, her flowers were sparse as they bloomed, but they stubbornly shot up through the harder earth to follow her as they always would. Uncomfortable around all the strangers she saw, and wanting a place to break down and cry after what she'd seen, she ran past all the others that stood around muttering.

Nayati only stopped when her tears overcame her, barely managing to press herself to a wall and slide down so that she would not fall and harm the egg. Spasming, she fought for every breath, tears making tracks down her cheeks as her chest burned. It lasted far longer than any other she'd had, usually triggered by social anxiety or stress, and she knew she wouldn't be sleeping well in this dark cave of supposed protection. But...it didn't seem so dark...looking up through tear-hazed eyes, confused, she stared in awe at the mural she had collapsed against. It was glowing like it desired to come to life, and she recognized the forms of the Gods she'd heard so much about but never seen with her own eyes. It was...simply breathtaking.

She was further distracted from her tears by wobbling against her chest, and she peered down at her egg, shocked. Was it finally time? Nervous and excited at the same time, she swung her long locks over the egg, offering her warmth and solidarity to the little life stubbornly making its way out of the confinements she had carried for so long. It took a few hours, but Nayati was a very patient individual, and slowly but surely the fissures in the surface of the egg began to deepen and widen. Until, finally, a tiny scaled nose poked through a little hole, eggshell stuck on the wet snout that sniffed the new air inquisitively.

Nayati sucked in her breath and held it, dazzled by this event. Slowly her companion- she had no idea what it was, didn't care, for she loved it already- began to shove its way through the egg, revealing curved horns and soft ears, and the biggest ruby eyes she'd ever seen. Her breath left her, staring into those replicas. She'd seen them time and again, viewing her reflection. Those were her eyes, mirrored back at her in the face of the child she was to bond with. With a resounding crack! in the modest silence of the cavern she'd sought haven in, the top of the egg was completely removed. From it came a delicate body, scales glistening whereas feathers were slick from fluid. It...it was a dragon! Nayati stared down at her beloved, feeling her heart soar with love for the fragile creature as it looked up at her, tumbling towards her on clumsy claws.

It looked at her, cocked its head, and went "Ryuu?" Her heart melted. It was clearly male, she could tell, and it was almost giving her a headache as their bond solidified, sending her what he was feeling in his newborn state. It was just so...intense. Leathery wings flapped uselessly and he gave out a slightly more frustrated "Ryuu!" as if demanding something. Nayati laughed gently, realizing it was time to name her beloved.

"Hello, Rathunax. I'm Nayati."

Even underground new lives couldn't be snuffed out. Evangeline stood watching Tallis as he flew frantically around the cave as if he were searching for something. He seemed intent and focused despite his erratic movements and flight. "What are you doing, Tallis?" She questioned the dragon as he disappeared down a hallway. "Hunting." Came his answer. "Must find food." He came back to where she was standing then darted off in the direction of the Sanctuary entrance. When he didn't come back right away Evangeline began to follow him, frowning as she saw his orange form disappear into the daylight that poured in from the entrance. She waited where she was, not brave enough to venture outside of the cave, and several minutes later Tallis reappeared with a dead animal dangling from his jaws.

"What's that?" She questioned as he zipped past her with the ball of blood and fur he was carrying. "Rabbit." He answered as he disappeared again. Evangeline's head tilted as Tallis flew back toward her, circled around and grabbed a fistful of her mane and tugged on it. She took a step in the direction he wanted her to go then stopped and he tugged on her mane again. "Come on! Not much time! Go!"

Tallis released his bonded's mane and flew down the hall again with her trotting after him, a new concern growing in her chest with each step she took. Not much time? The first thing that came to mind was that more of the darkness was coming so she was completely surprised when she came upon a young mare. Evangeline stopped in her tracks and looked from her to the young dragon on the floor of the cave among the shell fragments that he had just hatched from.

A flash of orange made Evangeline's eyes lift toward her dragon as he circled overhead, each pass bringing him lower and lower until he settled his larger body on the floor of the cave. He moved toward the hatchling, dropping the dead rabbit next to it and nudging it forward with his snout. "Eat." He said in a language that the hatchling would understand then looked toward Evangeline who was walking closer. "Hello." She said to the younger girl. "I'm Evangeline and he is Tallis." She motioned to the orange dragon who had gone back to watching the hatchling intently. "Congratulations."

Fire itself is alive in the eyes of her prince, shifting like the flame it resembles. It tricks her into naming each shade of red and orange that shift and shimmer in his orbs. He seems so strange, to her, and it feels odd to have another soul quite literally connected to her own. She feels what he feels, and her vision distorts in an attempt to see from his view as well. It is all very confusing, and though words are far, far from his reach, she can sense his impatience. Amusing though it is, she marvels at how mature he seems, despite having only breathed a few lungfuls of air since emerging from the egg she'd watched over with all the attentiveness she could muster. The little creature, unknown as it was to her, flapped its half-feathered wings pitifully and huffed another 'ryuu' at her. She giggled, only to hear the unmistakable sound of wingbeats. Crown rose sharply, eyes wide and frightened, only to see a small reptilian creature soaring in overhead. It looked quite a lot like Rathunax, but...considerably larger. Behind the orange flyer came the sound of hooves clicking on stone, and around the bend came a beautiful bay maiden with curious, kind eyes.

Nayati didn't know which to look at- the mare or her companion. The dragon circled easily around Rathunax, but seeing as her prince felt no fear in the presence of the other dracon, she said nothing and made no move to stop it. It held a prize, clutched tight in its jaws, which it set before the babe like a tender mother. Crooning softly at Rathunax, it nodded its head towards the deceased rabbit, and her companion perked up at the command she could not understand. Flapping forward, uncoordinated and inelegant, he snapped his tiny jaws into the flesh of the rabbit Tallis had deposited in front of him, crooning happily, his appreciation evident in the swaying of his tail and the shuffling of his wings.

Smiling, she turned her beautiful face to the mare as words were spoken, shifting her river of locks away from her ruby eyes to look up at her in greeting. "Hello," she cooed, voice soft and serene as it seemed always to be. There was hardly a bad bone in the young maiden's body, and if it existed, she tried her hardest never to let it overcome her. "I'm Nayati, and this is Rathunax." A smile curled her lips pleasantly, motioning her head towards the feasting dragon at her side, only for confusion to twist her face cutely.

"U-Um...do you...happen to know what he is?" She whispered it, unsure and hesitant, wishing her stutter would not have appeared once more. Nayati had worked hard to rid herself of such tendencies, but they happened across her speech at random times. She supposed it was better than nothing. At her side, Rathunax looked up from his half-eaten meal, appearing more interested in Tallis than the food now that he was mildly sated. Scrambling carelessly across the stone he prodded his little maw at the orange fellow, blinking big, judgmental ember eyes at his fellow dracon. Young as he was, he took his new self-proclaimed job as Nayati's protector very seriously. And he couldn't be swayed by food, no siree! Though his tummy happened to disagree.

He supposed the orange fellow was alright.

Nayati laughed as she watched him tilt his head, making an adorable "Ryuu!" towards Tallis, decisively saying that he liked him and approved of him. The rush of emotion from his side was still new to her, and she blinked oddly, a little dizzied by it. She'd have to get used to that one. Tiny crimson maw reached for the orange dragon, hoping for some sort of physical touch, wanting to investigate the adult somehow. Nayati smiled down at the two of them before turning back to Evangeline. "Thank you...it would have taken me a bit longer to realize what he needed." She felt ill-prepared, and because of it like a failure of a guardian and companion. Fiercely, Rathunax disagreed with her, wordless emotion though it was, and that calmed her fears a little. Her little spitfire seemed determined to make sure she would not see herself as a bad bonded.

Evangeline was quite surprised when the young mare, Naytai she said her name was, asked her what her companion was. The orange mare tilted her head, her forelock falling haphazardly over her left eye. It seemed as though the young one was unprepared for having a soul bonded to hers it made her wonder if Tallis had known, somehow, what was happening. Her gaze shifted to her dragon who was not being investigated by the younger one. "He is a dragon." She finally answered as she watched her own companion allow the younger one to poke and prod at him in good spirits. She found it strange that Nayati had not had anything for Rathunax to eat upon his birth. When Tallis had been born she'd offered him a feast of animals that she'd had to go out and kill herself, but that was in Isilme and Helovia was a far different world than Isilme was in some aspects.

The sound from the younger dragon drew Evangeline's gaze to him and she smiled as he reached for Tallis again. The orange dragon extended his neck and bumped his maw against the other dragon's then turned toward his own bonded. Up her right foreleg he climbed, his claws pricking her skin but she had become used to the sensation long ago and was nearly immune to it. Tallis draped himself across Evangeline's neck, his head resting between her ears so he could watch Nayati and her hatchling with all the keen interest he possessed within his little body.

"This is the first hatching I've attended since Tallis hatched." She said to the other mare. "He was very insistent that we come." Tallis trilled softly in response and looked down at Rathunax from his perch high above the ground. "Its a strange feeling to be bonded to another being, heart and soul, but you'll get used to it. He'll let you know what he wants and what he needs." The orange dragon lifted his head to nod his agreement before settling it between Evangeline's ears again.
