The meadow that Kastiel and Marlena had taken them to was tame, very tame. Flowers of various colors and shades dot the vibrant green grasses. The days are golden and light; the streams are plentiful. It was certainly an improvement over the demon-infested wastelands of Nocturne but the lack of any action left them longing for more. Well, maybe not everyone. In truth, most of them had been content to remain in their safe locale but the twin girls, Malaika and Kasimira, could not calm the wanderlust brewing in their veins. Little did they know that their opportunity for adventure was just over the horizon - brought to them by their older brother, Miykael, and his dearest friend, Alysanne.

Their descriptions of the place not far from where the family had settled were fairly mundane; no demons but also no tales of potential strife. As much as Malaika longed to believe that it was just as safe and just as dull, she had sensed something in Miykael's blue eyes. He possessed secrets - of what, she could not discern. Such knowledge only heightened the intrigue she felt stirring within. A knowing glance at Kasi and it was decided without questions or second guesses - they would go to this place when the time was right.

And that time had come. Sooner, perhaps, than Malaika had ever anticipated.

Miykael and Alysanne had left to go back home - she didn't know how many days had passed since then. She and Kasi had spent much of their time both planning their escape and working discreetly to keep it hidden from the rest of their little herd - their parents especially. Keeping it from their father, Kastiel, was a necessity that tore at Malaika more than anything else. He is her rock, her hero and she is his baby girl. Splitting them from each other is almost as painful and heart-shattering as splitting up twins. Malaika is the youngest in the family, born several minutes or so behind Kasimira, and had grown rather close to Kastiel. She comes the closest (of her, Kasi, and Miykael) to matching him in color. Her creamy coat is light and soft with pale gold dun markings. But I digress. The darkness of night had fallen but the sky was clear and brightly lit by the stars. The air was chilled with a soft breeze and everyone, except the girls, is sleeping peacefully. This was the perfect night for their escape and it would likely be a great success.

After a shared glance, Kasimira took off. Malaika hesitated, perhaps brazenly so, and her golden eyes drift to the pale, winged form of Kastiel - peaceful and asleep with Marlena tucked beneath his wing. Her eyes glisten, threatening to fill with tears and with a softly whispered goodbye the young mare turned and followed after Kasi.

The two alternate between walking and flying, resting when they need to. After what felt like months, civilization is within their sights - or, rather, the place that Miykael and Alysanne had referred to as Helovia. Malaika, whom had been soaring began her descent with the intent of landing before the tree-line of the threshold. At only just two years old, her flying skills were rough and still in need of practice. Her landing was, by default, as graceful as it could have been - which is really to say not so graceful at all. The angel girl stumbles and nearly collides into one of the trees. Fortunately, the pale one regains her footing and composure just in time to sidestep around the tree and tuck her wings tightly against her sides. After a few graceful steps, she stops and glances around her for the familiar form of Kasi. Once they were together again, they moved deeper into the trees.

Malaika sensed some remnants of darkness here, lingering pockets of shadow that either had yet to spread or dissipate. Hoping for the latter, her honey eyes - filled with concern and curiosity - shift to Kasi, connecting with her own hazel eyes. "This is it? We didn't make a wrong turn, did we?" she asks, resisting the urge to blurt out that it didn't seem much better than Nocturne. No demons, maybe, but not nearly as light as she had been expecting with the descriptions they had received. Something seemed off, but she couldn't quite place it. With a soft exhale and a shuffle of her wings as if in a shrug, the young mare continues through the trees to a small clearing. It is here that she stops, uncertain of where they should go. "Should we just wait here, Kasi?"

come on, come on, put your hands into the fire
For several nights leading up to their ‘escape’, Kasi had not been able to sleep for excitement. They would have left sooner if it were up to her, but Malaika was wise in cautioning her. And they did not know when they would be able to make it back to the warm meadow that hosted their family – it would be better to enjoy what time they had left. She had a hard time believing in forever, young as she was. Her entire life spanned before her, there was plenty of time to make a trip here and there.

And when the night finally came, she could barely stand still – almost waking up everyone with a whicker of impatience. But they made it out, taking off as silently as possible. For the first while, she often looked over their shoulder to see if they were being followed, but there was no sign of their father. If anyone had been awake, they would not have missed them – the twin sisters did not exactly fade well into shadows. With large, feathered wings and coats of yellow and white gold, they shone like the sun underneath the moon. Not literal gold of course, but Kasi rather liked to think that they were more than just shades of champagne and dun.

She often wondered if they should have just told their parents about their plans… but there was always the chance that they would be told ‘no’ and that was not a risk either of them were willing to take.

It took longer than they had thought, but really it wasn’t too long at all. And now they were here – maybe. It certainly looked like the forest that had been described to them. After an easy landing, during which she turned a blind eye to her white-gold sister’s difficulty, she took a good look at what lay before them.

Well, if this was what Helovia was like, Kasi had half a mind to turn right around. But the other half was already excited – this forest felt like something new, something they had never experienced before. She did not focus on the chilling feeling, the sense that there was darkness. And though she could feel the excitement already, she couldn’t help that underwhelmed feeling.

And she wasn’t alone. Malaika may not have blurted out that this place did not seem much better, but Kasi knew her twin well enough to know she wasn’t alone in that thought. “Certainly doesn’t look like much, does it?” Kasi was not impressed, and it showed in her tone. All the stories they had received when their brother and his ‘girlfriend’ had come home for a visit – and this was it? A gloomy forest? “Trust your brother to become fascinated with a place like this.” It was a habit of hers to assign their family members to someone else when they had done something she wasn’t particularly fond of: ‘your brother told us about this horrid place; your father told me off for telling your niece a horror story again.’ As if Malaika were responsible for his actions, when Kasi knew very well that Malaika had not known anything more about this place than she had.

She followed her twin through the trees until they came to a small clearing and stopped beside her once more – extending a wing slightly to shake out the twigs that had wedged themselves between her amber and cream feathers. At least here they could breathe a little better without the constant pressure of the trees around them. “I suppose so. It couldn’t hurt – I don’t fancy getting lost.”

The world was falling apart, both outside and inside for Ampere, and she couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't take the caves. She couldn't take Oxy and his stupid, true vision. Most of all she couldn't take Gaucho. Dealing with wraiths had to be easier than all of that shit.

Her hooves pounded out a tempo on the stone floor as she burst through the Sanctuary opening, hurtling into the air with another stride or two, the stroke of her wings urgent and forceful in the desperation of her soul. She was searching for clarity and it could not be found in the haze of the caves where eerier glowing cast false light like some artificial hope, and from it was born the most bizarre darkness.

A sick feeling rolled in her gut, less painful than colic but just as gripping. She knew the feeling. She'd experienced it before. It was the sensation of being completely fucked. Her teeth clenched and she struck out with her wings, arcing through the sky with the jagged intensity of lightning that demanded a pathway be made for it.

Without direction or thought Ampere found herself landing in the Threshold, some part of her guessing the tree cover would be safer than nothing. She had burnt out most of her energy with her sprinting, both on ground and in sky, and now she sought the comforting respite of bark beneath her hooves and needles in her mane. She needed something real to ground her among all the madness that this place had become.

Her wings cupped the wind as her haunches dropped, back feet reaching for a sturdy bough to set her weight on. In a delicate process she reduced her flapping, front feet beginning the slip in-between her back, her neck long and low to balance herself, while her wings gradually drew to a halt at her sides. She whistled out a tune of relief, though the pitch was thrown off by voices nearby. Ampere turned so fast the bough under her creaked, a warning that set her nerves prickling - the last thing she needed was a spill from the trees.

She leaned closer towards the sound, trying to discern if she'd fallen into a nest of wraiths or just lost souls. Flashes of gold and silver met her through the gaps in the brush, but wraiths were known to be tricky. She crept closer, balancing steadily as she moved over the tree tops. All attempts at stealth were lost however as the branches swayed, each leaf rattling out a whisper to the twins. "No point in it now," Ampere though with a sigh; another failed mission of secrecy. It was much easier to be loud and obtrusive.

With a casual flutter she leaped from the tree to the ground nearby, greeting them with a raised head and a rough smile. "I'm surprised to fine not one but too as crazy as me to leave the Sanctuary. Have you no fear of the sickness?"
