There was nothing more Note enjoyed in the world than flying. He could sense a change in atmosphere as they left the Threshold's chilling grasp, the cold lifting slightly even though their journey was north. The ground below was looking less dead and frozen. It wasn't a remarkable change, barely noticeable, but looked promising as the day drew on. Perhaps it was a sign that their days amongst the snow was coming to an end. He certainly wasn't unhappy about such a change.
The bay was used to change, he didn't welcome it, but dealt with such endeavors with ease. Like recruiting. It was a necessary job, he accepted the newcomers with as much kindness as he could give. Which really wasn't that much. But it was a start, he was working on becoming less distant, more laid back and nice. He'd never admit it, but it was the truth.
Note tucked his wings, swooping down to the ground to land upon the World's Edge with a soft thud. He snorted, trotting further within the herd's land as he tossed his head to remove his forelock from his eyes. He didn't have to look back to check for the little mare's presences, he was certain she'd follow with ease. If she struggled, then she had a voice to use against him.
"Kaj?! Kahula?!" Note called, stopping suddenly to observe the area. He doubted his monarchs remembered his name, he was just another soldier and they had never held up an actual conversation. There was the meeting, but Note had said all of twelve words to them. Nonetheless, he hoped they would appreciate his efforts concerning the recruitment of Saph.

The little pegasus following Note loved flying, too. Soaring high above the clouds, the land taking on a slight curvature, catching glimpses of the thawing earth below; a patchwork quilt of minty greens, wealthy swatches of emerald, a myriad of taupe and tan from what still lay dead, and fading ice desperately clinging on like some scorned lover. In Saph's eyes, this was a good omen for the start of her new adventure. Miles and miles of unobstructed view stretches out on all sides of the duo, but she pays particular attention to the sapphire waters glittering in the distance. She raises a single brow at the sight of the glass walls, but before she is able to comment or inquire, he begins to land and she quickly follows suit, inhaling deeply of the cold, crisp air as she does so, savoring the burn that races down her throat in its wake.

When they hit ground, she makes nary a sound but for perhaps a pillowy thud followed by the whispering susurrus of cobalt feathers settling down slick and flat. As her de facto escort summons his leaders, she takes the time to soak in her surroundings; torch eyes are wide and feverishly bright as they scan the layout of the area, their pace steady and slow, committing as much as possible to memory. A thought strikes her that makes her turn the study onto the tremendous, bulky figure of ashen dusk that stands but a few feet away: What if this is an elaborate ruse to kill her? Ritual sacrifice? "Oh, boy," she mutters softly, a puff of a chuckle making it breathy. It was equal measures amusing as it was terrifying, to think of that. It would certainly be an interesting turn of events, and one hell of a way to go out.

It's his name, shouted from the precipice of the land he owns, that lifts his aurals and garners his attention. Crown lifts and swivels, pale sapphires envisioning the lay of the land imprinted upon the map of his mind, determining the source of the noise. Clearly not a newcomer, for how he is called for by title, but why so near the borders and the ruination of the walls his darling Sunshower had once adored? By law of deduction, it's simplistic to guess that whomever calls for him- the tone is familiar but not overtly, a face he knows only in passing, a song he knows only in portions- has a newly arrived Helovian at their side. Excusing himself the sun-spun stallion turned on heel, lifting his wings to the crisp air flowing off the top of the ocean below the cliffs, easily lumbering forth and into the air. But he flies low, eyes like a raptor as they scan the foliage below, the only newly quickening buds not enough to shield his targets from view beneath the bare branches.

Before he arrives he sucks the chilled air deep into his lungs, sides expanding and deflating all at once to sing back to them, like songbirds tittering away to keep each other in range. It is a sign that he is coming, to not fret for he will arrive shortly. And true to word, he does, for they are in his range of vision not long after the vocals are sure to reach their ears. Massive wings push aside the branches with the buffeting of the wind he causes as he slows, descending with nary a sound, exercising all control so as not to startle the femme at his soldier's side. A wisp of a smile curls his lips into something more presentable as he extends a wing towards Note. He has not been forgotten, for his manner of introduction at the herd meeting had struck Kaj as honorable, despite Kahlua being the one to address him.

"Welcome back, Note. I see you have brought us a friend from the gateways?" Interest colors his lyrics and his eyes turn to the unnamed dame at Note's flank. A chivalrous half-bow and a tilt of his crown are given to the lady, greeting her wordlessly as his tongue forms the syllables he wishes to string together for her. "I am Kaj, King of the World's Edge. Welcome to our home. May I know your name, friend? And what you seek from my family and lands?" He does not mean it in any intimidating fashion, a simplistic question in fact; does she desire temporary respite, or a long term home? For it will determine much about how Kaj will respond to her request.

The bay was not disappointed. Within moments, a melodic call was brought to Note's faded harks, his head whipping around to the direction in which the tune had originated. A small smile graced his lips, recognizing the golden body that still managed to shimmer and shine in what pale light managed to penetrate the clouds of Frostfall.
Kaj's wings brushed aside the branches and other foliage as he arrived. Note was impressed, for his King was certainly turning out to be amazingly respectable. At the meeting, he was fair. Kahula had asked for peace, another attribute that let Note come to admire his leaders quicker than he had with Leander or Sumati or any other Sultan/Sultana of the Dragon's Throat. Except for Kri. She had been different - truly connected to her herd. Note expected nothing less from Kahula and Kaj, they were already turning out brilliant through his eyes.
Note bowed his head as Kaj extended a wing, listening attentively to what his King had to say. "Indeed, I have," Note responded simply, pulling his head up, the smile still painted upon his ashen lips. The faded bay stepped aside to let Saphiron and Kaj better see each other, coming to stand more so beside his King. Although still at a slight angle so he wasn't directly next to him. The poor stallion didn't know what Kaj's boundaries were, choosing to give him a respectable distance.
His sharp green gaze rested upon the multicolored mare, his eyes lighting up as if to say, 'Isn't this great?!' Note had brought many wanderers from the Threshold to the Throat when he resided there, Saph, he was sure, would be the first of many he would bring to his new home. Since his love life had crumbled, Note didn't have to worry about family or anything of the like. He trusted Sohalia in keeping Skysong safe, so now all he had to do was keep his herd safe. You can't keep a herd safe if there's no herd; which was why he recruited horses to the best of his abilities.

Done with her survey, she takes the rest of their wait time to start padding over to Note, footfalls slow but determined, questions poised at her lips, ready to unleash upon him a torrent of conversation. She feels awkward and it radiates off her like a contagion, but she wants to be polite, damn it, and leaving silence between them doesn't feel right. Before some paltry question manages to pass, however, the king's strident eagle cry pierces through the quiet afternoon before a flash of cream sand obscures her view of the heavy grey sky. An excited chirp squeaks out of her throat as an involuntary response to the song, followed by a warm and excited coo like that of a mourning dove's, matching her delicate bird-frame of slight bones and lean sinew. She is positioned behind the acolyte, but when Kaj finally settles down, Saphiron peers out from the hale outline of the dusty stallion with a cock of her head.

She all but swoons. Why did she expect anything different? Of course a king would be just as breathtaking as his realm here at the World's Edge and his subjects who inhabited it. The flaxen-gold of his pelt was not blinding, thankfully, but it unquestionably drew the eye and encouraged it to stroll across its satiny surface. It was an inviting sight, one for meant for indulgences.

Out of the corner of her eye, she watches the protective body of her escort float away from her and it conjures a wary look that quickly dissipates when she spots the bow. She is stunned for a moment again but recognition lights a small fire, brightening her face, chasing away uncertainty like light does the shadow. Abishia comes to mind and the mare smiles, gentle and pleasant. After a moment's pause, she returns the gesture, albeit less fluidly despite her general athleticism and nymph dexterity; while the physiology of its concept is not foreign, her lack of confidence makes it seem disjointed and out of touch. After bending one fore-knee and dipping her head lowly, pale strands of hair sweeping over her wolf-bright amber eyes and brushing the squat grasses that crowd around her hooves, she straightens into a relaxed posture that speaks of no dominance but rather a strong sense of self-awareness.

"Thank you, my lord." While such displays of humility like the one traded might seem new to her, the lesson of speaking clear, clean, and respectfully to a superior had not been skipped. Note gets another glance while she seeks to bolster herself with his presence, but then Kaj becomes the focus. "Of course. My name is Saphiron. I..." Twisting her lips, she thinks about her answer. Why not be honest? It wasn't like she had anything to hide. Well, nothing anyone here needed to be privy to. She scrunches up her nose. "Honestly, I was just exploring, and a bunch of folk came upon me and then Note decided to steal me away." A grin punctuates that, emphasizing the the facetiousness of her statement. "Short story even shorter, I think I'd like to settle now. And your place is just so beautiful," she sighs, a hint of wistfulness. About to admit she doesn't know what she can offer, she foregoes that and skips to the truth; she does have a way to repay him and his herd. No reason to be coy about it and waste the monarch's time. "I was slotted for healer training before I had to leave my home. I know the basics of care, even if I don't have the magic for it." That's it? Is that all she has to offer them? Surely a well established kingdom would have many menders. Mildly disgusted with herself, she digs up more. "I'm really good at puzzles, too. I've been told I think outside of the box. If you need a skill set like that..." She trails off, giving him room to take over.

[ooc: Originally I was coming here with healer intentions, but she is such a fresh character that I can't pigeonhole her quite yet. So she can do well as a nurse or sleuth, given her personality and desires. Wherever you need her the the most! I think at this point I'd prefer sleuthing (I am so bad about settling characters until after I played with them a bit), but I'd be happy with either. Again, whatever you guys are looking for!]

Warm blue eyes crinkle happily as Note nods his head in assent, overjoyed to see the fellow safe from harm and back within the safety of the lands. He did not pressure Note for more information than necessary, believing in his own capabilities to assess what Note had seen in Saphiron. As the Protector moved closer he extended a wing towards the other flighted fellow, perhaps an amiable brushing of flight feathers in mind. It is clear as he looks over Note that he is looking for health, making sure his fellow guardian has not been harmed in the process of recruiting the pale-maned damsel before them. Once assured his brother is unharmed and in good health, seemingly mentally as well by the satisfied, effervescent smile crossing his face, Kaj smiles softly and turns his attention back to the mocha fae standing opposite him. Her expression is indulgent, becoming shocked and wide as he bows regally before her, extending wing to brush against the foliage and scattered glass of blue below. But she is quick to follow, her own frame leaning and turning elegantly to return the action he has made. She is slim and dainty, petite in comparison to the majestic war-like build of the King before her, but her eyes are full of wonder and her features glowing with life. It's a welcome change, one he appreciates with soft eyes of summer noon skies.

Her voice is soft and cooing, dovelike, but the King laughs softly in his chest like a warm rolling storm, thunder in a dry lightning storm. Deep and comforting. "Call me by name, little dove. I am no lord, merely King. If it pleases you more, you may call me by that." He is warm like the sun as he speaks, amused ad endeared by her actions and hesitant words. He is no Lord. There is no celestial drum beating in his chest, he is just a man with a crown of moonlight on his head. The true lord is in fact a lady, and the mistress of night was the only one he would attribute such titles to. Her name comes next, and she fights for words, honey eyes crinkled and adorably nervous as she conjures up sentences for him.

"A beautiful name, Saphiron," he coos, attempting to put her more at ease with the compliment. She fits her name, the shock of sapphire on her wings reminiscent of a bluebird. Though he cannot help but to laugh softly as she recounts her experience in the Threshold. "Yes, I'm afraid that's quite a normal experience, miss Saphiron." Her swooning over the beauty of the lands he's always been loyal to swells pride in his ribcage, for even he cannot get over the beauty he sees daily. With every new morn he falls for the lovely land all over again.

"Thank you, the Moon Goddess has blessed us with this beauty. It makes me proud to see you so enamored with it." Wings smooth up his sides to position themselves high and tight, militaristic even, out of habit and upbringing nobody but he knows about. It is not comfortable, nor overly opposite, but it draws his shoulders up and his chest out even as his face is soft. His body speaks of strength and power while his features sing out brotherhood and curiosity. Listens as she speaks, contemplates what she spreads before him, knowing she is lost and he must guide her from this point.

"I know personally both our head Healer and our head Sleuth. They are very dear friends of mine. I will not force you to decide now, this land is meant for growth and honesty of self. However, I can introduce you to them with ease. Perhaps, under their tutelage, you can not only expand your skill range in both directions, but discover what you truly want?" He leaves the offer before her, excitement to help guide her along the path of growth gleaming in his eyes. Quilyan and Resplendence would handle her gently, that he was sure of. He trusted no other as deeply to care for the new member as he did them.

Her silence is absolute and pure, watching the exchange between the stallions in a surprisingly hawkish way. She was most definitely observant, picking up on tiny things like that, but she was far from subtle about it. She turns to Kaj as soon as he does the same to her, the look in her buttery amber eyes at first clinical but quickly melting into appreciation. Nothing much scares her... that she will admit to, at any rate, but towering stallions were up there on the list. It wasn't just their physical force and it wasn't necessarily fear for her mortality, but what they are capable of, from sheer obliteration through mindless destruction to a tenderness that was a bliss which did not belong in such a bleak world and yet by the good grace of the gods, it did. She already sussed out that Kaj belonged in the latter category; his presence was mighty, as any good king's would be, but his soul was benevolent and it made her feel, if even for one precious gold moment, that all was right in the world.

His deep and thunderous laughter startles her out of her light reverie, but she does not find it unpleasant; it was as inviting as the rumble of the summer showers it mimicked. "As you wish, my lo--er, king. Kaj." If she knew that he did not think himself celestial, she would tell him what she saw in him; a great, winged spirit that soared.

And then he has to go and compliment her, of all damned things. Even if it was just about her name! It was one of her weak points, up there with good food and friends. Her pleasant expression absolutely plummets. If they could see, her face would be red as embarrassment blossoms across her cheeks like a lit match to oil. She self-consciously glances away, suddenly feeling too much under the same brand of scrutiny she dishes out, only to land it on Note. "Thank you."

She is practically floored by him, again, as his wings splay out their large feathers, becoming statuesque; two beacons, steadfast, of all things wild and noble. The sunlight lines them in a rich molten gold that blazes more brilliantly than the material itself; their tips look as if they've become ablaze. The urge to stretch her own over takes her and she follows the instinct readily, but ceases about halfway into the lift before tucking them back in. An agreeable, buoyant nod takes her head for a quick jaunt. "Honestly, I don't think I could have dreamed up such a place. I must remember to bring offerings of thanks to her."

A breath is taken in swiftly as a surge of pride outlined with gratefulness swells in her chest. "I trust your judgement, so I would be honored. Whatever way I can be of use to you and your kingdom." So quickly after does she humbly drop her neck down again, it would seem she is unaware of even having done it before she is upright again. She is beaming. "Okay, now what??" She glances between them both expectantly, her body suddenly energized and pointedly alert. Her enthusiasm is exuberant and puppyish.

The bay watched idly, not exactly taking part in Kaj's explanation. He didn't feel as if it was his place to do so. It left Note a bit of time to think about a couple of things that had been bothering him lately. Well, a couple of mares to be specific.
The first, miss Cheveyo. Where had she gone? They were in the same herd, making it increasingly easier to find each other. At least, in theory. Perhaps she was on a quest of some sort that required her absence in the Edge. But she could've at least told him...she wasn't hurt, she could take care of herself very well. She had proved that much.
The second, young Brisa. Why had he ever gotten involved with such a mare? Her resemblance to Sohalia was eerie. He almost felt that it made him a creep. Or maybe it was just because he had a type and that type was dainty pale gray mares with at least one blue eye and who dreamed a lot.
Note was only pulled from his thoughts when Saph said thank you or something. He wasn't really listening, but nodded and smiled anyways, making it seem as if he was hearing more than he actually was. He got the gist of things, finding that little Zaps wanted to be a Healer or Sleuth. Occupations that always needed more members, that was for sure. It was an honorable path to follow that made Note glad he had stolen away the dainty fem. She seemed to like the Edge, what she had seen of it, at least. And she liked Kaj, as far as Note could tell. The mare would certainly fit in with ease.
"Okay, now what??" The little mare asked, beaming and gazing at the stallions. Note laughed a bit at her enthusiasm, Sabel crawling up to his poll to better smell the area.
"Now you're a member of the World's Edge. If you'd like, I can show you around and take you to our Healer and Sleuth," Note offered, glancing at both of the horses with a light smile.

At first she fumbles with his name, his title, but his smile encourages her along the path he has asked of her all the same. In moments she is correcting herself, and smile deepens in appreciation and satisfaction with her newly spoken words. Saphiron would learn in time that the dynamic Kaj held over his people was not entirely normal. He ruled them, but they were his brethren and equal to him in many ways. Though she seemed to be understanding, even if the humble tilt of her head and the flustered, florid appearance of her features suggested she was not so used to compliments. Kaj gave them so naturally, he almost felt guilty, but her embarrassment was of a pleasant sort and so he cleared his throat softly to perhaps garner her attention. "Do not be so embarrassed, sister. You have much to compliment. Though you are very welcome," he rumbled pleasantly.

Each word she speaks in praise of his homeland feels like a personal compliment to the King, as well. Her desire to thank the Goddess for granting them such beauty swells his heart, for he owes his Lady much in life for all he has been given. All she, in fact, has given him. "I am sure she would be very pleased, Saphiron," and his approval is weighted in his voice, tingeing every lyric with appreciation that yet another soul understands the love that can consume you so quickly in regards to a herdland. He'd been Edge the moment he'd stepped to the borders with Ink and Tor at his side. There'd been no moment of hesitation. The land had consumed him in moments, made him a part of the mists forever.

Neck bows and crown drops and Kaj smiles between the two at his sides. Her adorable puppylike excitement makes him laugh jovially, in love with the exuberance she shows. Note as ever is kind and selfless as he jumps to offer his services, and Kaj smiles warmly and appreciatively at him. "If you would do me such a service, Note, I would be more than appreciative. Surely there are others along this wall who clamor for me," he chuckles, though there is love and warmth that belies the fact that he loves the busy nature of being King. It connects him to his people, and he'd never part from it. Pale blues move to settle back on Saphiron. "I place you in Note's more than capable hooves. If you ever wish, seek me out, I would love to meet with you again." Even his eyes crinkle and smile as he says this, turning to Note as he sweeps by in precise, elegant movements. It is time for him to move on in his patrols and find who else needs his help. They're hiding somewhere, he knows it. "You are a fine Protector, Note. I am proud to call you brother." Words are softened, meant only for the dusty bay's ears, but Kaj's eyes are intensely sincere as they try to catch Note's. With a parting smile to the both of them, he takes a few lunging steps and thrusts himself into the air, tilting a wing in goodbye before disappearing into the pale sunlit sky above.
