RES && VAL
She had called out for assistance at the Edge border. She wanted, no needed to go back to the Heart Caves. That herb box was a necessity for the number of herbs she assumed were going to be required to host the herd of this size. She had started to move off before them, uncertain steps leading her towards the caves but her detached mind knowing that the herd would follow.

It was strange, traveling without Valiance. However, each jump and startle was retorted with a gentle reminder that she was not going to die today. He had stayed behind, gathering up those who were willing to help before circling around and starting on the path to the caves. Val moved at a faster pace than Res, who's journey was continuously hindered by her jumping at the erupting pits of flames or the squirrels running across her path in the meadows prior.

Alas, she made it there, in one piece physically while forever frazzled mentally. As she descended into the cave, hooves sliding around on the crystal, she tumbled down. Her bodice crumpling at the bottom as she let out a really large puff of air. One, small cough and she was dragging herself back to her feet again. Inspecting the box that still sat in the wagon. There were a few scratches, a few scrapes, but it wasn't broken and it wasn't overly damaged. That was good. and, it seemed that there were no herbs left - her poisonous ones strewn across the floor as soon as they realized just what it was.

Now, it was only to get it back home.

--OOC
Permission to PP Valiance (he's way overprotective and rude, just fyi) to getting them all down to the caves since I had Res go ahead.
Open to any Edge members who also want to assist in getting the box back home - I'm only tagging those from the secret board thread ;3

DRAGOMIR
Slipping down the steep slope he had barged down his first time through after Resplendence, Dragomir takes in a long, deep breath of the dark air that filters through the place, ears raised to catch the sounds of their hooves echoing through the cave. Huh, he muses, it wouldn’t have been so bad to be the first ones down here. His memories of the caves are full of lots of noise and bustling figures, crammed down beneath the earth to hide from the apocalypse above. It was not his idea of a paradise.

This serene den of contemplation, however, was quite to his liking.

The only sound aside from the ones their bodies make is the roar of the fire falls, which he views though the corner of his eye as he too looks about for the cart and box that Resplendence has come in search of. It’s not like it isn’t obvious, as big as it is, but she spies it first, which he supposes suits the disposition of the entire venture here. It was her box, after all, she was just not strong enough on her own to move it back above ground.

He understands, at times like these, when they work together to accomplish what one cannot alone, just how valuable a herd can be, and just how precious the family that he has come to find truly is. Even if he doesn’t know them well (it is no fault of their own, he knows this), he feels safe around them, confident that if they unite and work as one they can defeat anything; too few had actually fallen in the times of darkness to doubt their strength if they stuck together, and he had a good assumption that those who had been taken were those who had gone out on their own.

It was a sad thought, to think that Mirage had vanished all alone, a mother to so many more than just her natural born children. He sighs, pulling his large frame up alongside Resplendence to look at the ruins of her field work thrown all across the cavern, but is glad to find that the objects are still mostly whole, if only slightly dislodged.

Having to deal with a crying gardener was not on his list of to do’s today.

It never took Kahlua long to hear Resplendence's voice carrying through the air. Perhaps she had some special, innate sense at knowing when the Moon Doctor needed help, or perhaps it was just that she craved time with her friend too greatly. Whatever the reason, Kahlua's head perked at the call of her councilwoman. Gathering up her little metal scorpion, as she liked the things company, she picked up an easy trot and headed towards the borders, spying Valiance in the sky not too long after, and in the end following him with curiosity and enthusiasm as he herded them all to the caves.

Truth be told, the queen was not entirely happy to be back in the area. She had left in a hurry the first time and had no desire to return. Still... She had left her basket down there, and Res' box was in the shadows as well. Both were needed. Once more, Kahlua would have to face her fears.

But as members of her herd slipped down the ramp into the darkness, Kahlua found that she could not stay above and be a coward- as much as she would have liked to. Taking a deep breath, the queen stepped forward and slid down into the familiar hell hole, cringing as the darkness wrapped around her. She doubted she would ever get rid of the memory of the beast that attacked her and Res in these caverns- it just couldn't be done.

Shaking off the dust that settled onto her coat, Kahlua stood still until her eyes adjusted, seeing that Res had already found her box. Now Kahlua only had to find her basket- she was so glad Res had saved it for her in the first place. Nickering happily to her family, the queen began to wander around the edges of the room, searching crevice and shadows until she found the basket, kicked way into some corner, the handle chipped and scratched, but it mostly none the worse for its travels across the land.

Grasping it in her mouth, Kahlua couldn't help but smile at the way it chimed when it hit the glass of the chest harness that Dragomir had so lovingly crafted for her. Between her hears, the scorpion creaked and whined in the darkness, eventually crawling down to sit within the basket instead of on her head. Making her way back towards her friends, Kahlua set her basket down and nodded. “Well then,” she chuckled, though somewhat muted from her usual flamboyance. “How do we lift it up?”

Back to the caves!

Though Alysanne’s trepidation about it stopped as soon as she reminded herself that she was helping out Resplendence.

She had heard the call from the other mare and had been moving after her but apparently she wasn’t moving quite fast enough, because sure enough that brilliantly red dragon came swooping down and started tugging on her mane to “encourage” her. Hemlock, as you can imagine, took some offense to this and started squawking in a rather indignant way – attempting to flutter up and engage the dragon in a fight of honour but, unfortunately, the little chick was little more than down feathers and flight was out of reach for him.

But after that, it was a fairly smooth journey! Hemlock clamoured up to his usual spot between her ears and kept an eye out for that pesky red dragon.

She followed the crowd from the Edge with a small bounce in her step despite their destination – it was only a quick trip, after all! And it was spring, life was returning to Helovia and really – she had some good times down in these caves. Down here she had met so many of her new friends! Besides, they really weren’t so bad, she thought as she slid down the entrance and caught up with everyone else. “Hello everyone!” She offered by way of a greeting, joining them as they gathered about Resplendence’s glass box.

Kahlua, with her delightful chuckle, did bring up a great point. How were they going to move it?

A snort escapes Res's maw as she shakes off the dust that clung to her coat from her slide down. Her eyes lock on the box instantaneously. And, she goes right up to it and stares in dismay at all of the plants strewn around.

She looks over the box, and once satisfied that it isn't broken and unusable she starts to actually take in those that are around her. Her eyes instantly fall to the towering form of Dragomir, who has pulled up beside her, over a foot taller. Shyly, and delicately, she bumps her maw to his shoulder in thanks before hearing the rattling of more hooves coming into the cave.

Eyes manage to light up a little as she looks over to Kahlua who has gathered her basket and is now asking just how we plan on getting the box back up to the top. Being as close as they are, Res can see the slight muteness of her behavior. So, she speaks up. "We won't get hurt. They killed him, remember..." She offers, the broken sound and fear from those memories still slightly present in her voice as she pretends she is strong for her breaking friend. She would have to be there, she would not allow her friend to be scared alone.

It is Alysanne who appears last, saying hello to everyone before falling into the group. "It still has Destrier's harness, and it is still in his wagon." Res muses, quiet voice ringing in the caves with a difference strength that was never present. "Perhaps if someone can fit in it-" her voice is cut off as Valiance circles and lands upon her back, digging talons in to annoy her as he generally does. "- then the others can get behind it and help to push it up the slope. From there it should be simpler to get back to the Edge across the almost even terrain..." whispered voice still sounding louder than before. Her eyes unable to actually meet any of those around her even though she is close to all of them.

She is not confident enough to be that leader, even if her opinions might be intelligent. No. She is concerned about how she is perceived. She is concerned she isn't good enough to speak. It is normal for her to act like this, to speak so quietly and meekly. But they are her friends, and Valiance is puffing in strength on top of her. They should understand just why she is so quiet.

DRAGOMIR
It’s a gentle touch to his shoulder that draws his eyes to the Moon Doctor, half listening to the sound of the others arriving in the hole as he is plucked from his thoughts by the embrace. Its curious, how these mares all like to touch him so much, nipping at his mane or brushing their lips across his skin, and even more curious is how it leaves a trail of tangible, tingling light across where they have touched most every time. Its not the same electric charge that pulses through him when Kahlua touches him, that’s to be sure, but he also doesn’t (hasn’t?) thought of Resplendence in such a light, even if she is pretty.

A man has to have standards, does he not? He couldn’t very well be in love with Kahlua if he went around seeing fireworks when any of his friends touched him. That might very well mean that he was mad, actually…

”How do we lift it up?” the question comes from Kahlua, and he glances over to her with a curious expression; even he can see the harness there, on the front of the cart, and he can easily put the image of Destrier between the pulls. It’s a sad but necessary thought, that of the lost warrior, for he needs to remember his size to best fit the person to pull the thing out. Still, it nags at him that the Queen has asked such an obvious question of them all, and he wonders while problem solving if she is feeling alright.

Perhaps the fear has her scatter brained. That must be it. She is normally far too wise to miss something so plainly there.

Glancing around him at those gathered swiftly, he decides that he is the only probable mule, so to speak; Resplendence is far to small, as is Kahlua, and while Alysanne could pull it, her wings would infringe the harness and possibly make it impossible to use on her frame. A gentle, ponderous nickering rises from his throat as he steps forward to the cart, grasping the harness and pulling it out to examine; the straps are simple enough to get into.

"I should fit it, though I’m a bit taller than Destrier," he says as he backs between the two handles, lowering his face to slip his nose into the harness, "I remember some vine in the Glowing Room. We may need someone up top to help me pull as well, if we can’t get it out just by pushing it."

“Aly,” she offered in way of greeting to the pegasus, another friend for the girl to call her own. At least in her fright she knew she could count on these three. And Resplendence does not disappoint, as she offers words of condolences to the queen. They killed him, remember. Kahlua winced. She remembered all too acutely. The fear, the helplessness, the screams that echoed in the cavern that wasn't big enough to hold all the terrors she had imagined. A shiver rushed through her hide and she tried her best to shake the thoughts from her head. The sooner they left, the better.

All in all, the queen was glad that Res was taking the lead at this moment. As for mention of Destrier, it was just another sad thought in a long list. She had made that rings and trinkets that linked the leather of the harness together, she had watched him ear it to plow the earth below the wall. Only the glass cart was new to her, perhaps a creation of Aaron's. It would be good to return it to its home.

Watching as Destrier began to man the harness, Kahlua took a deep breath. It made sense that they might need vines. Besides, all three of the mares would not fit comfortably behind the cart to push. To have somebody pull would be best. So, setting her basket in the back of the cart, she took Dragomir's instructions- and a deep breath- and wandered farther into the caves. It only took her a moment to rediscover the glowing room and once she had she wasted as little time as possible gathering the vines. Strong to pull, but long so that they might be of use. And, before her heart began beating out of her chest at the solitude, the queen rushed back to the main cavern, searching in the hope that her friends had not left her.

Tossing them down in the back of the wagon, she looked them to the dragon, hoping he would help her string them through the cart so that they might set off on their way and leave this stupid hell-hole behind.

If only she did not have these wings! Alysanne would have happily offered to man the harness – but with a couple extra limbs it seemed like Dragomir was their only option for that portion. No matter, he stepped up without any hassle – everyone seemed so eager to help, this entire venture should be over before they know it! Such a helpful group had gathered.

Alysanne felt without a doubt that Kahlua would make to the glowing plant room and back without incidence, but there was still that painful pull of anxiety the entire time the other black and white mare was gone. She remained near the cart but watched the cavern where Kahlua had disappeared until she came back again. There were no horrors left in these caves, she was certain, but it wasn’t entirely lost on her that Kahlua and Resplendence were less than pleased to be back here – they would be eager to get going again.

Sure enough, before long Kahlua was back with a vine and setting up to help Dragomir with pulling the wagon. That would leave her and Resplendence to help push it from behind.

As everyone else found their spots, Alysanne moved towards the back of the cart and lowered her head, encouraging the fluffy form of her owlet to hop into the basket that now sat carefully in the cart. “Come on now, little one.” She figured it would be safer for him in the cart (and he hardly added to the weight) than worrying about him on her head as she was busy helping everyone else. The mass of down feather and eyes (for that seemed to be all he was made of) peeped angrily at her – and at that infernal dragon wherever he was – before bouncing down her face from his usual perch between her ears and sliding into the basket in the back of the cart.

Quickly now, as she didn’t want to hold anyone up, she plucked a few feathers from her wings and used them to make a hasty bedding. Hopefully he would not bounce around too much!

Once that was taken care of, bright green eyes maintained her cheerful smile as she looked around to the others. “Everyone ready?” She would, of course, wait for Resplendence to give the word – this was her show, after all. Alysanne just wanted to make sure there were no issues!

RES && VAL
Dragomir moved forward, saying that he should be able to fit the harness. He talks of vines in the glowing room, and it is the other mare who seem to rush to go and get it before Res can even get herself moving. Instead, she moves up near Dragomir and begins to pull on the harness sections to ensure that they sit just snug enough to not become an issue later in the mix. And, as Kahlua returns with the vines she glances over towards Valiance who begins to weave them around the back of the wagon and tie them to ensure that when one yanked it would not come flying off of it.

Delicately, Res pressed herself up against Kahlua in a comforting manner as Aly deposited her owl in the basket inside the cart. Valiance swooped down just once, to bother the little owl, before situating himself upon Res's withers, Res groaning a little at his teasing act. A gentle breath in, as Aly finishes up and asks if everyone was ready. "I believe we are. Let's go." A tiny pause, and she looks over towards Kahlua. "Kahlua - you go up first. You too Aly. Each of you take the end of the vines, and I'll call up if you need to pull."

She needed to be strong. She needed to face her fears. That way Kahlua didn't have to. That way she could finally prove herself to those she was with. That way she could be the mare they had expected her to be.

Except that was hard. That was impossible. She was afraid of everything.

DRAGOMIR
He waits for everyone to get into place, pale blue eyes switching from one face to the other, a smile gracing his lips as he watches the young owlet slip into the cart and making a mental note to try and keep it from jostling about as much as possible for the sake of the little puff of feathers. His skin twitches gently under Resplendence’s breath as she adjusts the straps against him, the closeness of her odd as all women being near him is. Still, he’s getting better at maintaining calm breath, not reaching the point of panic that he had in his younger years but surely feeling the pressure of anxiety rippling through him with her so close and his frame as restrained as it now.

A sigh escapes him as she withdraws from his side, remaining in the cave with him but not so close as to make his insides twitch. He lets his eyes follow her rather than the others, quietly refusing within himself to pine after Kahlua at such a time but still finding it hard not to lay an eye on her as she returns to the daylight.

It only makes sense for her to stand beneath the sun while he resides in shadow.

"Here’s to nothing," he says with a soft smile on his face as he chases away the dark clouds of his thoughts, stepping forward and into the pressure of the straps. At least they’re even, he can tell as much within the first few steps, and with minimal effort the wheels are rolling and he’s ankle deep in the loose gravel of the slope upwards. "Keep the lines tight," he calls up the shoot, pulling with all his power and finding it much more difficult to rise up the path than it had been without a cart in tow when they had first left this place.

Occasionally he grunts or slips slightly in the loose footing, but eventually they’re making good headway and he can feel the sun touching down on the top of his head, scalding the dark hair between his ears and sweet as the first spring blooms.

Glad to have her friends to tell her what to do while she was still searching the shadows for what new nightmare awaited her, the queen quickly gathered her basket and trotted up the slope that would lead her out of this underground torture chamber. Perhaps in time she would find peace in these caves, be able to come down here and smile instead of shudder but... No, she could not even imagine such a time. These caves held horrors that no mortal should have to face, even if most of Helovia did not understand.

Gathering her basket and her end of the vine in her mouth, the girl moved up the ramp, doing her best to leave room for Aly to move near her, to help Dragomir pull the hulking glass cart up the rocky slope. Upon reaching the top, and setting down her basket, Kahlua did her best to follow Dragomir's direction and keep the line pulled taught. Still, she'd never really done a lot of physical work in her life and she wasn't entirely interested in exerting too much effort. Pulling when she needed to, and sometimes putting a little bit of slack on her line and letting Aly and Dragomir take a little more of the weight, the queen toiled along, hoping that neither of them would notice her little periods of laziness.

At least the land above the caves was better. The warm heat of heart washed over her, leaving her body feeling rejuvinated and reminding her of the time she had spent here with Mauja. She really did need to find him again... If she could have sighed through her (sometimes pretend) struggle to pull the cart up the slope, she would have. The idea of the trial had been so promising too. But he would come around in time. She was certain of it.

At Resplendence’s instruction, she moved from the back of the cart to the front, grabbing hod of one of the vines that was tied there and bringing it up with her to the top of the cave. The sunlight felt refreshing even though they weren’t underground for that long but she couldn’t quite enjoy it just yet. Two of her friends were still below ground and they had the hardest part about this venture before them. Getting it up that hill! But with a little teamwork, she didn’t think that it would be too hard.

Gripping the vine as tightly as she could in her teeth, Alysanne readied herself beside Kahlua - flashing the other paint an encouraging grin.

Waiting for instruction, it wasn’t long before Dragomir called up and told them to keep the lines tight and she was careful to do just that. The pegasus was far too focused on doing everything that she could to help Dragomir with the burden of bringing up the cart that she did not notice when Kahlua might not have been pulling quite so much on occasion. The muscles in her neck strained as she helped, taking steps backwards so as to keep the lines and taut as possible as the cart and the stallion harnessed within it slowly made their way up the steep hill.

Each slip caused a slight jerk in the vines and a skip of her heartbeat - worry finding it’s natural way into her and she knew it wouldn’t leave now that it had settled. Not until they were all up here with their bounty with them. And before too long, they could see Dragomir’s head and then the rest of his body touched by the sunlight that played along their backs. Just a little bit further now!

Resplendence
and don't worry, just breathe
He starts the trek up the loose footing. His muscles seem to strain, and he is asking that the lines stay tight. So, meanwhile, Res shoves her right shoulder against the box, head turned to the left in order to have it out of the way and body arched. She just barely had the strength to keep the cart in the same spot when he slipped, and slowly her coat was becoming lacquered in her own sweat. Quick, exhausted breaths continue to escape her mouth as she pushes, though. She does not stop as the other two mares stay up in the sun, they need to box to be returned to home if they wanted to be able to continue to store their herbs.

Besides, the box meant more than that. Kahlua had made it for her. It was an extension of her painted friend and like she could not dare to lose her, she could not dare to lose the box she had made for her.

So, when the sun finally managed to press against her skin she gave out one last call. "PULL!" Her voice sligtly weakened from the energy she was exerting attempting to keep the cart from sliding backwards. And, once finally on the ground above the cave, Res allowed her limbs to fold under her, sucking air in and trying to catch her breath. "Now… just to get this home…" she whispered, dropping her head to rest for a moment, just a moment.
