just put your feet up to the edge, put your face in the wind

The sun was high in the sky, beating down on the sweat streaked sides of the pale mare laying in the tall grass. Labor had hit her suddenly, the force of her contractions making her take to the ground much sooner than she had in her previous pregnancies. She had learned patience, but patience waned over the course of foalbirth, and she found herself desperate sooner rather than later, to expel the foal from her body. The foal, it seemed, had other plans and no matter how she pushed it felt like the child wouldn't budge. Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes as she began to think that maybe the foal wouldn't come. It could die in her belly and then she would die. Would d'Artagnan ever find them? And her daughters and sons?

Pale lids slipped closed over blue eyes and the mare sighed, feeling defeated. How could this be happening now? The other times she had done this had been so simple, a walk in the park compared to what she was going through now. She couldn't go out like this. It was pathetically weak and she refused to think of herself as weak. Muscles tensed as she began to push again, her determination overriding the defeat she had been feeling moments before.

-skip the gross birth stuff-

The smell of blood and sweat was heavy in the air and the pale mare lay trembling and exhausted. Behind her lay a small, pale filly that she knew needed her attention. Kou groaned as she forced her aching body to a standing position before turning to her newest child. Her crowned head dipped down and she nudged the small, pale body of the filly. "Ráeru." She whispered the girl's name against her wet ears. "My Ráeru."

I'll carry you on my shoulders, never set you down.
Ferry you through the coldness, never let you down.
It was bright. The sun beat down onto her ivory back, she lay curled up on the grass. Stunned and a little shocked at what had just happened; azure eyes blinked, turning to look at the moving figure in front of her. Petite nostrils breathed in quick tiny breaths. She was almost an exact replica of her mother, her bright ivory coat shone under the gaze of the sun. A dainty size in birth, a promise of how ethereal she would become as she grew into an adult. Blue eyes as bright as the clear ocean and of course she was crowned with a glass horn. Something soft nuzzled her, and the filly looked up at her mother. While she was still very young and could not quite understand what bonded them, the delicate girl already knew that Kou was the one who had brought her into this world. Sounds came sweet, gentle, lovingly from her mother. They sent chills down her spine and Ráeru bleated softy in response to the crooning of her mother. Looking around the meadow of her birth, the smells drifted over towards the new comer. Her little body inhaled them greedily, they lit up the sensors in her brain allowing her to experience each new scent with a refreshed excitement.

Her young mind turned back to the hymn that her mother had murmured to her. Ráeru...was that who she was? Everything about her placed underneath one name? It was a pretty name and one day Ráeru would come to appreciate being given such a unique name. For now it was just a funny word that many would come to say to her. Her stomach growled as the feeling of hunger worked it's way through her small body, and the smell that radiated from her mother was the clear source of food for the young filly. Getting to the food source would require effort...it would require her to stand. It wasn't long until nature guided her gently, urging her to unfurl her legs and shakily begin to stubble to her glass hooves. As her skinny legs shook, they caused her to tumble. They collapsed as she fell, and a huff of frustration left her nostrils. Looking up at her mother for encouragement it was a moment before Ráeru decided to try again. Nervously she began to battle with her shaky legs again, becoming rather frustrated as she toppled onto the ground again. Her ears were flickering from side to side in annoyance, this standing thing was harder than it looked. Yet her determination paid off and only after a few more failed attempts, Ráeru stood rather smugly in front of her mother. Tail happily whipping from side to side, she hurried (rather stumbled) over to her mother for her first feed.

Raeru. A sound catches your ears and you turn your head, looking to see where it had come from. You're not entirely sure how you ended up in the meadow again- yeah, another one of those trips. Rolling your eyes, you nevertheless head towards the sound. The voices sounds sweet... innocent. You're sure you could stir up some trouble over there, given the chance. And you kind of feel like causing trouble right now because you're feeling rather self important. Oxy the Addict, Legatus of the Falls, army usurper, Rostislav defeater (in your head anyway, it hasn't exactly happened yet), champion of the battlefield and protector of the realm. Yeah, you're pretty awesome. Just remember that.

As you happen on the scene, another mother and child placed before you, you can't help but roll your eyes. How is it that this is the fourth time just this year that you've happened upon a newly birthed brat and her doting mother. Whatever are you, Oxy the Stork in addition to all of your other mighty titles? You scowl at the very idea, as though you presence brings babes into the world the same way that your presence on the battlefield brings defeat to whomever it is you have challenged.

But the newborn child has just risen, has just reached her prize of food and nourishment- now is your chance to reek havoc. After all, you're not really worried about a little pale mother, are you? Chuckling softly to yourself, you wobble your way over to the pair before reaching down towards the newborn brat. None too kindly, you attempt to push the child to the side, perhaps to make her stumble back down to the earth, before you look up to her mother. “They don't get any less ugly.” Yeah... not the most creative insult, but it will do. You've found that mothers are particularly sensitive to such criticisms. Cautious of the mare's hind hooves, which you are dangerously close to, you sidle to the side, watching her with an amused grin, wondering what sort of chaos is about to erupt.

About you, the nearly-invisible wisp that is your companion sends you a variety of angry emotions, displaying her distaste for your actions quite vividly. But you ignore her- you never listen to bad advice, after all.

Kou looked on with the same affection she'd harbored for each of the children she'd birthed before as her newest daughter found her hooves and stood. Her muzzle touched the newborns ears then traveled the length of her neck and back. Every inch of the pale foal was perfection, if she did say so herself. Her ears twitched at the sound of another approaching and as she looked up she expected to see d'Artagnan, late as usual, coming to his child's birth. Her eyes narrowed on the stallion that was not d'Artagnan as he approached her and her child.

"They don't get any less ugly."

The nurse was shocked that he would be foolish enough to push her newborn and call her ugly when she was anything but. The mare pivoted to put herself between the stallion and her foal, blue eyes flashing with a newly found loathing of the ugly beast. "Funny how someone as hideous as yourself would call a child ugly." She said coolly. "Have you nothing better to do with yourself? Pathetic." Her ears tilted back and she snorted as she caught the scent of locoweed wafting from the ugly beast.

The pale mare's tail slapped against her flanks. Had he been eating the stuff? Did he not know what it did to someone who ingested it? Of course he did, she decided. He probably even liked it, judging from the supply he had of it. So she sought out his eyes, aiming to use her magic on him once she got it. He would not pick on her child without some sort of consequence and she had the perfect one in mind. She would just make him believe that the locoweed she suspected that he had such a fondness for would twist his stomach in knots. She doubted he would still like it when he felt like his stomach was going to fall out of his hind end.

Laughter falls from your lips as the less than impressive specimen whirls to face you, upset that you messed with her child. But you do not fear her wrath, tiny little thing that she is. Even her words, so full of fire, are nothing but an empty thread. Calling you ugly? Boring, you’ve heard it a million times before. “No, nothing better,” you grunt in response, pondering whether or not you should follow up on this insult with some more interesting displays. And so while you ponder, catching the mare’s eyes for a moment or two, you decide that you better reach down and grab one of your beloved plants- food for thought, if you will.

Except, as you reach down to your bag, something isn’t right… It’s hard to say what is wrong, at first, your addled mind having to drift through fog to grab hold of what it is you were trying to think. And then you arrive there- the thought that Kou has planted in your head, and you drop the vine back into your bag as though it were poison, an ugly scream falling from your lips as you try to figure out why you were about to eat poison in the first place. Eyes wide with panic, you stumble back a few steps and stare at the creamy bitch. “You tried to poison me!” you hiss- obviously you wouldn’t be stupid enough to put poison in your man bag.

And while you would normally be quick to respond, you are momentarily stopped by the thought that you had just eaten some of this poison a moment ago. Colic, diarrhea, what is to come!?! Your ears fall back on your head and you whirl about to look at your stomach, as though it is an alien rather than your own.

But while you’re busy acting a fool, your companion is busy getting to work. Although you frighten her and treat her terribly, she has developed something akin to stokholm syndrome. And so, even though you clearly started this whole altercation, she can’t help but feel like she needs to do something to protect you. She calls upon her own magic, lifting a rock from the ground and whips it through the air with all of the strength she can manage. Interestingly, her target is not the creamy mare, but you.

As the rock strikes your ass, a new sort of panic overtakes you, and in your high state, you over-react just as your boggart through you might. With a pathetic sort of half-rear, you begin to canter forward, directly towards the creamy mare, if she has not moved, head not screwed on tight enough to have much sense of what you’re doing. All you know is that something hit you from behind, and you’re not going to stand still long enough to let it hit you again.

He laughed and it only made Kou pin her ears back and narrow her eyes on the hulking stallion as she continued to try and catch his eye. She may not have been physically able to shake him but she could mess with his already addled mind, plant seeds there that would begin to grow as the minutes ticked by. As he met her gaze she planted the first seed, that the plants he carried with him would wreak havoc on his insides. She wouldn't stop there. Oh no, not when he'd purposely come to tarnish the birth of her child. No, no, no, she had far more in mind and so she tried to catch his eye, this time to plant the seed of love, but not just any love. If she succeeded he would be convinced that he was in love with the next stallion that he happened across.

The pale mare smiled, a giggle slipping past her lips as he whirled on her after attempting to eat his locoweed and accusing her of trying to poison him. "You're absolutely ridiculous." She said. "I've not moved from where I stand. Perhaps you've poisoned yourself with your own idiocy." Her head tilted as she continued to stare, the gears in her mind turning as she began to think of what idea she could plant in his head through hypnosis.

What happened next was quite sudden. She heart the thwack of something hitting another something then the stallion began to run. Kou ushered her daughter out of the way so they would not be trampled by the brute as he ran past. Hopefully he would continue on his way and wouldn't stop until the world ended and he plummeted off of a cliff to his untimely death. She began to search for whatever it was that had hit Oxy and made him charge forward like the great oaf that he was. There, through the very corner of her vision she thought she saw something. It was hard to tell because it was little more than a wisp before it was gone again. The pale mare frowned then glanced back to where Oxy had run. If she managed to catch his eye she would plant the seed of fear. Fear of whatever it was that had caused him to run.

"Come now, Raeru." The mare murmured as she looked down to her daughter. "Let us find your father. We've wasted enough time here."

“Oh no you don't. You're not going anywhere.” Your words are barked out, your previously almost-humored voice turning malicious in response to her haughty response to your idoicy. You've stopped by now, turned to look at her. You do not know that she had just caught your eyes for a second time a moment before you ran, planting a different seed into your head. You do not know at all, but you will come to find out when the moment is right, in the future, when this foolishness is over. For now, you know only rage at the fact that she has poisoned you and then assaulted you.

“You're a special kind of bitch, you know, to poison me and then assault me and pretend you did neither.” Of course she hasn't yet denied assaulting you, but you're sure she will. In your head, a sort of panic overtakes you that is not your own as your companion realizes the events that she has set in motion in her moment of childish humor and devotion to her ungrateful companion. You take no mind to her sudden change of heart- the images she sends you in your head seem to imply that she is the one that hit you with the rock- but you just assume she is trying to diffuse a situation that has gotten out of hand.

But no, you will not let this mare get away with trickery. She has played a game with you that she never should have started, you will win. You pick up a canter again, this time making sure your head is down and your eyes are upon her. You will not miss this time as you charge at her, you assure yourself. Massive hooves thunder across the ground as you try to come near her, head dipping down only to raise up at the last moment, attempting to scrape your horns deeply into the flesh over her side. But you do not stop there. Your charge forward continues, your chest presented as a billboard that might beat against her and knock her sideways or to the ground.

And while you are mad at the mother, you have no quarrel with the foal, so you have tried your best to be sure the young one is out of harm's reach. Or at least out of harm's reach enough that it will not be killed by your testosterone-fueled rampage.

“Oh no you don't. You're not going anywhere. You're a special kind of bitch, you know, to poison me and then assault me and pretend you did neither.”

"What are you talking about?" She was confused as to why the stupid brute would accuse her of assaulting him when she hadn't even touched him. He was crazy, that had to be it. The locoweed had rattled his brain so severely that it was barely hanging on. She was beginning to suspect that she should have merely walked away from the idiot when he had pushed her child, but her pride had not allowed her to. Her ears lay back against her head and she snorted, trying to figure out what she could do to diffuse the situation. Perhaps if she made him believe that he loved her? Would that work? Or was his desire to prove himself to be a man too strong?

There was too much for Kou to think about between her own well being and her foal's and the idiot that had started to charge at them. Motherly instinct drove the mare to position herself between her foal and Oxy, a squeal emanating from her maw as his horns scraped over her flesh. Crimson blood rose quickly to the surface but she had no time to dwell on that as his much larger body smashed into her own smaller one. She was wholly unprepared for such force and it sent her reeling. The mare tripped and stumbled as she tried to remain standing but eventually her hooves left the ground and her side met it.

"Bastard!" She protested as she, again, sought out his eyes. She had to make him stop. While the idea of him loving her, or even thinking she did, was completely disgusting to her she had to try. She had to try to make him believe so he would stop. She scrambled, trying to get to her feet and trying to locate her foal to make sure that the defenseless child was not his new target.

Your horns hit flesh and the sweet smell of blood invades the air. Crimson drips from your horns, the fluid glinting in the sunlight that drew nearer to the horizon with every moment longer that you spend here. Something in your head tells you that you should not be here, that you should not be damaging this mare. She doesn't know you, doesn't know what herd you're from. You're a large warrior beast, but... well, there's plenty of you in Helovia. You've seen them roaming all about. A little attack on her won't lead anyone back to you, and yet... what if it does?

No. You shake your head. The only discerning thing about you is your leather bag, and even those you've seen about here or there. That strange unicorn from the frozen wasteland, for example. It doesn't matter. The feeling of your chest upon the mare, that sweet feeling of pressure and pain, of pulverization... You watch as she goes flying, pulling up from your canter, and grumbling in some imitation of a laugh as she hits the ground. She's attacked you, and now she will pay for her crimes. You don't have the heart to kill her- that would certainly leave somebody chasing after you- but a little maiming... that happens every day.

Trotting over her, you waste no time in raising your hoof and attempting to slam it down upon, eyes fixed sorely on her chest, avoiding her gaze in favor of accuracy. Perhaps you strike a little harder than you mean to... you only meant to bruise her side and yet... never mind that. Jumping over her as you prepare to exit the scene, you strike out one more time for good measure, your hind hoof, shod with metal shoe, slamming out roughly towards her spine. You doubt she's shifted, after all.

As you run off, you turn back only long enough to look at the child that she has left behind. You feel no remorse at what you have done- it is better for the child to learn at a young age that the world is not kind to anyone.

"Between the lines of fear and blame... You begin to wonder why you came"
_______________________________________

In every twisted tale, shameful song and paltry poem was the sordid grin of death, that took life and left the mind shaking in its wake. There was no difference between golden hero and woeful villain, yet all stared down into the same dark pit that had swallowed their whole life in a flash of madness. For many years, the brooding Nightshade had been the instrument of death, inflicting it upon others wherever he decided fit and leaving behind him a trail of scattered emotions, forever wanted for crimes against the innocent. He was the untouchable, the inflictor, always wanting to be hated and feared, the kind that flourished in his own arrogance and looked down his long dark nose at the idiocy of others. His screw was forever loose and his thoughts dabbled in the dark corners.

So what happens when the tables turn?

The sun was high and it was warm enough to drag a grumble from the lips of the Doctor who hated the heat on his back. He almost wanted to turn around and head back to the Basin where the weather was colder and there were caves to grouch in. Yet, he knew he couldn't. Aramis had spotted the familiar white form and feminine scent of Kou disappearing towards the Thistle Meadow, the place where most of their children had been born. It was that made d'Artagnan push on through his annoyance of the heat and head closer to the Meadow, worry lining his face as he knew... He was late. It was worry for both Kou's health should the birth be difficult and well, his own health for being late. The shade visibly grimaced at the thought of her scolding him, although he had to admit, it could be a turn on.

He pushed the thoughts away with a snort bellowing from his nostrils, shaking his head and reminding himself that it was important he be there quickly. To at least offer his magical assistance and the usual bad naming help, "Bush" wasn't the best in the book, even if they were surrounded by them. Hound and horse pushed onwards at a brisk pace, all eyes looking for the familiar sight of a mare and her new foal, the basking glow of new life and the welling pride that filled him as the father. Today, however, would be different.

There was no sparkling image of a newborn foal and her doting mother, no filling of joy throughout his body. Just Blood. Lots of it. A white crumpled form littered the meadow, bruised and battered, an image that would remain with him for the rest of his days. The Time Mender struggled to move his legs as the trembled through a walk until finally he stood over her with an unreadable expression. She was beautiful, she was always beautiful and always would be. Perhaps it was because he didn't know how to react, or maybe because there were so many emotions to feel at once that he stood very still.

Finally, the magic of the Time God slowly seeped out of him and into the body of his Nurse, his face contorting into intense concentration as he ran it over the puncture, the bruises and the broken bones. His strength wained, his face became more and more desperate, weaving into her heart and he carried on like this until he had no more energy left to give and his body shook. "Kou?" He whispered, his voice hoarse with weariness and shock. He waited for an answer before heightening his voice to a loud angered roar "KOU!" Teeth ground against teeth, mismatched eyes flickered dangerously, but his body language mimicked that of sorrow.

Without moving the Nightshade ushered to his hell born dog, but Aramis already knew, they were bonded after all and the hellion was angered too. His nose traced the floor, the body and... Tiny glass feet. An electric blue gaze lifted to view the filly, the newborn, the child Kou had protected. It was then with a slow shift of his head that d'Artagnan noticed her too and his expression immediately looked pained. She was the perfect blend of their love, her pristine coat a memento to her mother and a harsh reminder to her father. She was Kou born again, but the Doctor was far too gone with rage to realise this yet. Instead he looked at her tiny form with regret, hurt, sorrow, anger and lastly, love. He wanted her to forget this day, but at the same time she needed to remember, he needed to know who did this. So badly, the Nightshade wanted to shake it out of her small hide, the knowledge. The who! He knew, however, she was far too young to demand quite a task of her newborn mind and he hated it.

When everything became too much his legs began to move and for hours he simply paced the meadow, back and forth, his tail flicking, his mind captivated with revenge. The murderous cogs turned and the chains fell free of his madness, he was, for the most part, all rage.

There were moments, however, when the anger would drift away and sadness would take its place. He would hover near her, place a thistle upon her beautiful hide and whisper desperate words. "Take me with you." Silently, he hoped she'd reply to him, just some words. Anything.

Where did I go wrong?

just put your feet up to the edge, put your face in the wind

The pain that came with the weight of a stallion as large as Oxy pressing down on her rib-cage, cracking and snapping bones was unlike anything the pale mare had ever experienced before. Her breath seemed to become locked within her lungs and try as she might she could not get enough oxygen to keep herself conscious. He, however, had one last punishment in store for her and as he lashed out at her back with his shod hoof she let loose a strangled cry of pain.

"Ráeru." She whispered her child's name and tried to stand to no avail. While she was barely able to lift her front half she could not, for the life of her, move her hind end. The pale mare collapsed, her body shuddering as she finally slipped from consciousness.

Muted voices and the dull sensation of something warm seeping into her body roused the mare back into a conscious state. d'Artagnan? She could hear his name in her head but did not have the strength to speak. Stop. Stop. He was wasting his time, she knew, because no matter what he did she could not seem to catch her breath properly. One of her ribs had to have punctured a lung, it was the only explanation. And her back. The bastard had broken it. There was no way that d'Artagnan could fix it. There was something else that was wrong, though. Something that she couldn't place but she knew.

"Take me with you."

"...no." Her vision was blurry as she opened her eyes. "Ráeru?" Was her daughter okay? Had she protected her or had the bastard made off with the foal after he'd broken the pale mare? Everything seemed so surreal, she felt as if she were floating rather than lying on the ground with her love standing over her. Kou coughed and could taste the unpleasant metallic taste of blood on her tongue. She never thought that she would be the one to go first. She had always thought that d'Artagnan's mouth would get him into trouble and would be his undoing.

Kou smiled as she thought of her doctor. "...I-I ... love ..." you. Her voice drifted and the light faded from her eyes as her breathing finally stilled and she was lost to oblivion.
