[sorry for super weird post D: Kou first!]

Fly away little bluebird, fly away high.
Fly away little bluebird, you own the sky.

So the bluebird flew.

He flew and he flew and he flew with his shadow chasing him below and the sky a silent ocean above. He flew and he flew and he flew merely because. The sun had reigned long and the sun had reigned strong, but now with the bite of cold in the air the jay felt a lift in his despair. No longer grounded or damp with sweat, he sung to the clouds of all his regrets.

Sing as he may, song as he might, this little jay was never quite right.
He lay down to sleep but he'd always make a peep. A scream and a shriek and a blood-curdling howl. This is the way you sleep when your heart is foul. Dreams and reality are one and the same, and little by little, it drives you insane.

So fly away little bluebird, fly into the night.
So fly away little bluebird, see if you can outrun your plight.

But he couldn't.

It didn't matter where he went, everything came with him. If he flew fast his heart broke faster. If he flew hard his memories hounded him harder.

In this state the blue gelding arrived in the Deep Forest. In the hour of dusk his sight was poor. In a state of sleepless unrest his clarity was fuzzy. Nearly crashing through the trees with fatigue and visual duress Jaydan wobbled through the forest like a ping pong ball striking the paddles that were the rooted trees.

At some point he started to sleep. As much as someone like him can sleep in a state of walking. Eyes half-lided, mind overturned and dreams dancing in every shadow of the world, Jaydan returned to Salka in the night of the attack. Fires razed on the horizon. Tree limbs shaking were the rattle of bones snapping. The rising night, gathering all around him with each breath, was the smoke of destruction. He could feel it in his lungs, tightening, constricting. He began to cough, his voice hoarse as he called plaintively to his rider that he never lost in that fight - he lost her much later, but it hurt all the same, factual or not.

"L-L-UUUUU-U-IN"

The forest was quite a frightening place at dusk and even more so at night, Kou had to admit. She had wanted to get out of there before the sun had gone down, but she'd managed to get herself turned around and ended up walking in circles. After a while she had grown weary and had paused to rest, cocking one hind leg to rest on its hoof. The pregnant mare sighed and lifted her head, gazing up at the canopy of trees that blocked the view of the sky so effectively. If she could see the stars she would be able to find her way home.

Resigned to the fact that she would be spending the night there unless her doctor came looking for her the mare shut her eyes and let her head hang slightly. The long journey had taken its toll on her and she wanted nothing more, now, than a moment's rest.

Rustling branches startled the dozing mare into a wide awake and nearly panicked state. Her ears rotated atop her head as she listened intently. The rustling never stopped and only made Kou more nervous. "Hello?" Her voice was quiet, timid. "Who's out there?"

"Hello?"

This was not the cautious voice of a pretty little mare lost in the woods.
Rather it was a wicked taunt spewed from the fat lips of an orc.
Jaydan paused immediately, wings providing the barest of whispers as he froze, caught in the shade of a tree's shadow. All muscles quivered with the intensity of the moment as Jaydan sought to locate the foul beast.

Another blather of jibber came. "Who's out there?"
Teeth clicked in annoyance, but it was enough to provide Jaydan the location of the mutant.

Blue flesh rippled in the pale starlight as the jay strode forward. Each stride was a calculated progression of movement. Every hoof placement was secure and soft, wings pressed tight to his side so not even the wind could rouse a peep from the chatty feathers. His tail hugged his rump while his neck lay parallel with the ground. Only his withers moved extensively, rolling like a cat on the stalk.

His horn tip parted the brush with a sigh. Blue eyes blinked in the light of the fire's glow while the haze of war screamed on around him. Over there someone met a club - agony by song. Just behind someone broke their leg - a serenade of terror. Near here someone plummeted from the mount into the forest - a deadly absence of sound.

All around him comrades fell. Brothers, sisters, friends, family - all were destroyed. Ruined by one like this monster ahead of him. Jaydan shook, his rage a nearly tangible thing, writhing and violent like a snake still biting even with its head cut off. I'll go down biting. I am Luin's head.

Its features were bulbous and swollen. Jaydan knew from experience the unnatural lumping was typically full of pus. It gave the thing a rounded head that grinned with hooked teeth. Hair fell from its skull like spider web silks that have trapped so much dust they crack and shatter. Its thighs are monumental, thick as some tree trunks and just as scarred. In its broad hands a scythe gleamed malevolently; Jaydan dipped his own sword towards its stomach.

His lip quivered over clenched teeth as anger spun out of him in excess. He could not withhold himself any longer. The pain wrenched in his gut and like spurs in his side sent him into an explosive reaction. Jaydan shot out of the brush with a strangled cry of revenge. His horn aimed true at her belly, drawing on her right side though unfortunately from her front. His hooves cleaved the earth while his wings hugged his body to maintain aerodynamics. He charged, swift and murderous.

No one answered her, but the mare had been positive that she'd heard someone rustling branches. Now it was eerily quiet in the forest. Quiet enough for her to know that something was wrong. When the birds stopped chirping and the crickets didn't even hum there was something wrong. Her ears tilted back and she shifted nervously, her now wide eyes scanning the dense forest for any sign of movement that would bode unfavorably for her. Yet there was nothing. only the subtle rustle of leaves that could be from nothing more than a breeze. She told herself that that was all it was. Just the wind. But if it was just the wind why was she so nervous? Why did her heart feel like it was about to beat right through her chest.

"Hello?" She tried again, failing to hide the tremor in her voice that foretold her fear. There was another sound and the mare jerked her head in its direction and witnessed the white and blue pegasus as he stepped from behind the bushes. There was a split second of relief followed by gut wrenching fear as his head dipped down. His horn gleamed in the faint light and Kou's breath caught in her throat as he aimed it at her. "What?" She was confused. What had she done to the stallion to warrant such a threat from him?

It all happened so fast after that. The stallion lurched forward with a monstrous cry and she lunged in the other direction screaming. She felt the tip of his horn against her side, scraping and cutting into her flesh, but thankfully not piercing. "d'Artagnan! Mauja!" She screamed for them, hoping against all odds that one of them would be close enough to hear her. If they weren't then she and her unborn foal would die in the forest at the horn of a monster.

The ugly thing fled, typical. They were not an honorable species. They found strength only in numbers - gangs or packs. Alone they were weak and cowardly. It made him sick.

Hooves shot through soil and flung it around him as he jerked wildly to follow her movements, his wings acting as a counterbalance as he leaned into his turn and shot out of it, snapping up alongside her. He aimed to slam his left shoulder into her right flank, hoping to knock her balance so he could dive in with his horn and eviscerate her from the end of her ribcage down.

It was a foul task, their insides not much prettier than their outsides, but he would rather a stinking and rotting orc than a live one.

"DIE" he screamed to drown out her pathetic wails, a language he did not understand but that drove into his ears like angry wasps.

Something was wrong. d'Artagnan frowned into the depths of the Deep Forest, four harshly cloven hooves planted themselves along it's borders. The thrill he normally found from the battled scarred wood was replaced with a deep foreboding, something or someone was terrorizing it once more. The trees wailed their insecurities, like they were reliving the carnage that had taken place many years before. As if their bark was once more stained with blood. An icy chill ran through the branches and rustled the dying leaves in its wake before reaching the Nightshade's stern merlot face, leaving his body cold and devoid of any joy or happiness. d'Artagnan shook his head and stamped at the ground. What was this feeling?!

"d'Artagnan! Mauja!"

A wail sent forth from the hallowed wood that sounded terrifyingly like Kou. Or was it Kou? What if this was the trick of the wind, Kou wouldn't be here in the middle of the night... Would she? The pale femme was now heavily pregnant and d'Artagnan hoped she wasn't so foolish to be hanging about at night but something was telling him otherwise. Soon a sinking gut feeling took over that had him hovering on the verges of his own insanity.

The Doctor squeezed his dual coloured eyes shut and told himself he was an idiot ten times before biting so hard on his own lip that it bled red down his sooty wrinkled maw. It tasted good and cleared his mind, this was his own imagination. Nothing was happen-

"DIE"

Eyes flung open and snapped towards the direction of the voice. No wind tricks, this was real. There was a new steal to his perception as he bared his teeth and hammered hungry hooves into the ground. Didn't they know? He too was a beast of the night. Lobes snaked back on his pommel and the taste of blood that calmed him before now fired him up for a fight. The mad man made his move.

A scene came to life before him, his eyes zoning in on the blood that stained the beautiful fur of his Nurse. His pregnant Nurse. Screeching in anger, d'Artagnan charged at the blue pigeon as the azure's body neared Kou's once more. Glass shards of horn angled down and aimed straight for the point of attachment where the body became the wing.

"Yes, die!" gruff vocals laced with a murderous stare followed as his horn bared closer to it's target.

She could only move so fast with the weight of her foal in her belly. There was no way she'd ever move fast enough to get away from the unipeg that was trying to hurt her for reasons she didn't know or understand. What had she done to him? Nothing. She'd done nothing. For once she was completely innocent given her rank in Mauja's Plague.

Kou didn't even have to look to know that the horrible creature was getting closer to her. Still, she continued to run. Continue to scream her doctor's name hoping that he would be close as he always was when she needed him.

"DIE!"

The pale mare felt her heart leap through her chest. It all felt so bleak and hopeless now, but over the drumming of their hooves and the heavy thud of her heart there was another sound of hooves. Another voice. Another scent.

d'Artagnan burst onto the scene just as the unipeg's shoulder slammed into her flank and sent her stumbling to regain her balance and not end up crashing to the ground. Her hooves fumbled to find purchase and, finally, they did. Her movement was slow but she still changed direction and headed away from d'Artagnan and Jaydan.

[I'm so sorry, I've completely lost the drive to post this character but didn't want to leave this thread hanging]

In the moments before Jaydan reached out to strike the hideous orc, another weapon flashed in the moonlight. It glinted, beautiful, catching Jaydan's eyes so that the whites showed as he strained to see from the edges of his sockets.

He saw the spray of blood before he recognized the cold hum of a blade in his side. The sensation was strange as a pressure and then a release seemed to flood between his ribs. Eventually he started screaming.

Wings slapped the ground they fought so hard to lift him away from these terrible two. His eyes were still hazy with dreams but Jaydan's twisted notion of self preservation set him flying in the night, a bloody trail left with every wing beat as his ribs sputtered foul rain.
