The summer has been bountiful and gentle with mild weather and an abundance of easy food. Herbivores and predators alike thrive causing a sudden spike in the populations - and an urgent lack of space for them all to mingle upon.

As Tallsun draw to a close however the lack of perspiration that has dyed the grasses brown and bleached color from shrubs and trees provide a looming threat to those who forage among the tall grasses.

In the dead of night a storm that has been looming on the horizon for several days finally break out in a thunderous display, the rumble loud enough to block out any attempts at conversation. Lightning criss-cross over the sky in a display that is as magnificent as it is dangerous.

Suddenly, with a sound of ripping cloth the lightning strikes down into a dry old oak! The tree is instantly set ablaze, and the sparks threaten to fly out across the rest of the Thistle Meadow, igniting the grass!

No rain has fallen from the black clouds, the threat of a raging wildfire is imminent.

It was risky business; flying during such a storm. Rei had gone out for a flight to clear her head and shortly after her departure the storm that had been laying dormant for days finally erupted.

Torn between lowering her altitude in order to distance herself and wanting to distance herself from the trees that often were victims of the lightning that lashed out. The pegasus adored nature and had a special love for the trees but she had no desire to go down with one.

She shrieked as a grand old oak nearby was struck and sparked up in flame. Her earsplitting cry was drowned out by the bellowing storm. She was blinded by the flashes of lightning that flashed in the otherwise pitch black night. Not even the stars were brave enough to poke their glimmering bodies out in this storm.

"Someone help!" Her shout was most likely a waste of breathe she saw no one near and even if there was, she could barely even hear herself. So how would they hear her?

A weight just as heavy as the flaming tree fell upon her shoulders. At least for the moment the crisis was her burden to extinguish.

Anguish filled her as she watched the forest animals that were forced to flee from their homes. Smoke helped to spurred the emotion from her eyes in the form rolling tears that fell one after another. Each hitting the ground in quick succession. A family of foxes passed by with the vixen running behind nosing her kits forward trying to rush them along. The whimpers of the terrified babies left Rei resolved to lay the hungry flames to rest.

She racked her brain trying to think of a way to put the fire out. The spotted mare shook her head in frustration. Time was being wasted while she stood trying to figure out what to do. Rei was forced to back away as the flames doubled in size. They reached towards her with fiery fingers. She winced as they grazed one of her legs.

Water. She needed water. Taking off at a powerful adrenaline powered sprint she made her way towards where the river forked off into the meadow. Her breathe came out in huge bursts by the time that she made it to the closest part of the water source.

"How will I get it there?" She had nothing to carry the water with. Hoping that it would be enough to make a difference she threw herself into a deep enough section of the lake to encompass her entire body. While in the lake she also took in a mouthful of water to carry a bit extra.

Breathing through her nose Rei took to flight just barely skimming over the ground. Coming closer to the scene of the fire despair crossed over her face as a coughing fit brought on by the smoke left her spurting out the mouthful of water she had carried.

With her drenched feathers she flew over the flames veering sharply in her flight path causing water to go from her body onto the scorching flames below. A smirk crossed her face as she heard the flames gasp at the cool water's touch. Maybe she could make a difference.

Her efforts were small, but she put all of her heart into them hoping that she could slow the fire down before it spread further. Tirelessly she made trip after trip. The images of the forest creatures never leaving her mind's eye.

The progress of REI's attempts to stop the fire from spreading is indeed slow. Luck is on her side however because as she works to extinguish the fire a sudden rumble from the clouds is followed by the first, hesitant patter of rain upon the dry ground. Growing steadily denser as time goes by the rain soon showers down and drenches everything in sight - effectively extinguishing the tree and the few smaller grass-fires that have started around it.

"Congratulations! You have prevented the Thistle Meadow from burning!"
