The dry grass waved softly as a cool wind rolled over the meadow and briefly moved the warm air away. Though as soon as the wind had passed, the air became still yet again and it felt as if the temperature rose a bit.
The sky at the horizon was clear, shifting in pale orange and darker purple in the setting sun and a few stars had peeked out over one's head. In the other direction, dark clouds grew slowly and growled quietly with their voices of thunder occasionally.

Arathea sat on her usual, large stone and looked between the sunset and the skulking clouds. Her ears were perked forward and her expression would be close to that of an excited puppy. Everything about the evening was very beautiful for her and it sort of drove away the sad feelings of loneliness. She was too occupied looking this and that way, listening at every rumble of distant thunder and the noises of crickets and occasional bird hiding in the grass.

A small part of the clouds lit up in a brief lightning and the wolf shivered slightly, smiling for herself. That something dangerous could be beautiful always excited her every time she came upon it. Part of you wanted to run and hide, the other part was drawn towards the object in question. Or... Event. Situation. Maybe a storm could not be called an object. Were clouds objects? Would you be able to touch them if you got up there. If she ever found a bird willing to talk to her, she would have to remember to ask it if you could sit on clouds. Maybe the winged horses got their nests on the clouds. Though... How would that work when the clouds faded? Maybe they built them on special clouds that did not fade.

She shook her head briskly and chuckled. At least her rambling head with all its questions and thoughts did not distract her from her looking. The sun had set even more now, slowly pulling the light with it and turning the sky slowly more dark purple, going towards dark deep blue right over one's head and almost black over by the clouds. More stars had showed themselves by now to watch the meadow while she watched them, her head tipping from side to side as if she head some silent music and her tail tapped with it.

[ Lemme know if you want me to make the text larger for you, @[Arathea]! ^^ ]

Storms were fascinating, because they were so incredibly local. Like, right-over-your-head local. Mauja was drenched, soaked to the bone, white fur a rather unbecoming shade of darkened gray, and his mane was a ropy mess plastered his neck and face. With the sunset, the temperature would drop, and he was pretty sure he'd be pretty cold then. After all, he still had only his thin summer fur, and it had nothing to offer against his kind of weather. It was the kind of fur that said "go stand under a tree, you blasted idiot". But of course, he was a blasted idiot for a reason, and that was because he was too stupid to do exactly what he ought to—take cover.

No, instead he was high-tailing across the meadow, absolutely pelted with rain falling like a flood from the sky, knees raised high with each fleet-footed step of his trot. His ears were slick against his neck, gaze flung skyward every so often. Straight above him it was pitch black, but a little ways ahead, he saw stars shine from the dark navy canvas of the sky, so surely, if he was just faster than the storm.. or was it traveling the other way? Being straight under it, he couldn't tell, because one moment the wind pushed him forward and made his wet forelock flutter uncomfortably against his eyes, and then in the next it was punching him in the face as if wondering why he thought he could get away from it.

All he knew was that he was already sopping wet, and because of that, he could just as well keep going straight ahead. It couldn't get much worse, not really, unless one of the many bolts of lightning decided to strike him. Besides, he wasn't terribly annoyed, more like the way you're—fondly—irritated with an unruly sibling.

And it even was his lucky day. Either he was faster than the clouds, or they were going the other way, or dissipating as the air grew colder, but whatever the case, the rain lessened to a sheet of drizzle, until finally it was nothing but a heavy moisture in the air, making his breath pool in white clouds around his dark muzzle. Drenched, but oddly light-hearted despite his situation (or maybe because the more tangible nuisance of being incredibly wet made him not think about it), Mauja laughed to himself—surprised at how easily it came out of his throat, and too caught up in examining his puzzling state of mind to notice how close he'd danced to an old friend of his.

Did the storm move away? Or did not move closer at the pace of snail? Maybe it was moving along the horizon, because the sky above her head was still clear and she could see one star popping up after the next. Though she was happy the storm took its sweet time to come over to where she was sitting. Looking in its direction, there was this dark, blurry wall of rain off in the distance. It could stay over there.

But there was something more over there. Arathea frowned and perked her ears as something paler moved against the blurry wall, getting more and more clear. She squinted in a try to see through the dark. The way it moved reminded her of a horse's gait. Her head tipped slightly to the side, then more... Then more until she was almost holding it up side down and her tail wagged faster and faster out of her control. She recognized that pale one. She thought she did at least. It had to be him...

The pale horse came closer and she could now make out the icy horn sticking out through the drenched forelock. Her tail swept and bounced over the rock behind her and she kept her weird positioning of her head. Mauja seemed to be doing alright, save being soaked in the chilly night. But she heard the laugh coming from him and it made her smile. He had not seemed to noticed her yet, though and she was about to make a move to catch his attention.

However, she stopped herself and her ears moved back in an uncertain manner. They had not really been bestest of best buddies and at the same time not on a bad paw with each other. She still was not sure why she had just come to like the stallion. She just did. And he had trusted her enough to guard his little owl egg back in the day. Hopefully he would not be too angry with her having disappeared. Again...

Arathea turned her head around again to sit properly, before leaning it back to let out a soft howl. When she tipped it forward, her eyes were fixed on the stallion and the smile lingered on her face.

[ Arathea's on the right, eh? x3 ]

It was a long, long time since he'd felt so free, so unburdened, like the chains tethering his black heart to the deepest pits of the earth had broken and snapped; he threw his head into the sky, a few ropy strands of long mane tearing free from his neck to snap into the air, and his front feet lifted off for the briefest of moments before coming down again. There was just something.. something, in the cold, wet rain that had pelted him, in the boom of thunder and the bright, arcing snap of lightning, and the scent of moist earth—something in all of that, that made him feel alive. Bucking, he hopped a few steps forward, his sane, not-wet owls hiding under some tree and regarding him in the way you might regard your deranged uncle.

But just as the snap of thunder rocked through his very bones, the soft howl of a wolf pierced him to his very core, and his weird, self-absorbed dance ended in a most ungracious crow-hop straight to the right. If he'd been a cat or a wolf, all his fur would've been on end, but as it was, he was a horse, so instead he ended up with his legs splayed, head high, nostrils wide and ears flickering as if they were well on their way to wrench themselves free and fall off his head.

Because, traditionally, Mauja was not at all fond of wolves. Oh, he liked them at a distance all right, and they were rather nice to use as metaphors, and there was some kind of savage beauty to them.. but ever since that huge wolf-horse had stood on him in the forest, his pack of snarling friends all around, Mauja had liked them best at just that: a distance.

But not this one. It took him just a second or two to locate her, his nose full of rain and electricity and wet earth, so it was his eyes that found her. Unlike him, who looked like he'd gone for a swim, she was dry, the soft beiges and tan of her coat sort of grayed out in the starlight. And his posture, which had been that of a very startled horse trying to locate danger, was erased instantly—mainly because he was bouncing forward, towards her. "Arathea!"

((Yep X3 And pardon the short post. Just thought you had waited long enough. *sniffles with cold*))

Her smile faded at first and her ears moved back when her howl seemed to startle Mauja. It did not surprise her, him being a horse and she a predator, but it still made her feel uncertain about the whole thing. Though when they then looked at each other and the stallion's expression turned into a more happier one, Arathea's ears perked up again and the smile spread over her face once more.

She stood up on the stone, swaying her tail quickly from side to side and made a little bounce with her front legs, lied down on her elbows for a second before standing up on her paws again. "King Unicorn! She is happy to have found him." She took a step to the edge of the stone and stretched out her nose towards him. Standing on all four on the rock, she would most likely have her chest at the level of his head if he held up.

"She was worried he would not be found, or he would be displeased with her disappearing before. The winter drove her away." While holding her head out still, hoping he would accept her greeting, she sat down on her haunches and looked him over. He seemed to be doing alright... But...

Arathea lifted her gaze and took a look around her, looked to the sky, looked across Mauja's back and then took another look around in the sky before settling her eyes on his again. "Where is the owl? She asked with a hint of concern.
