Orangemoon lightning filled the sky. Sheets of electricity flashed and dazzled, leaving afterimages of stars and stripes blurring the vision of any who dared to stare at the approaching storm. The clouds churned and rumbled, as if propelled by some galactic wave. Dusk had fallen, yet the sky retained a brilliant violet hue, broken only by the white-bright brilliance of electric light. Rain had not yet begun to fall, but it would soon, for the air was thick with moisture.

A creature perched upon a lone rock, on one of the cliffs. Mists danced and swirled, as if trying to imitate the bubbling thunderheads above. The creature was large - nearly the size of a bear, but with the appearance of an owl. Its colouring was nearly as impossible as its size; feathers adorned with gold covered a body that seemed to be comprised of royal purple. Enormous claws held onto the rock, as the creature perched easily - large golden eyes reflecting the lightning that continued to dazzle above. The owl waited. He had already invaded the mind of the Queen of these lands, gently calling to her to climb up the cliffs to where he waited. Simultaneously, he gently pushed away the minds of those who might be tempted for a midnight stroll. Tonight was only for him, then Queen, and the other.

The forest was so quiet without the hustle and bustle of her herd, most of them having traveled to the island where safety and peace seemed to reign. The queen herself strongly desired to stand upon the island with them, but a sense of duty that hid in the back of her childish mind had sent her to the forest for the past few days. It was lucky she had been here, of course, having run into Aaron and then Murdock, but it was only for Kaj that she was here now. She wanted to please him, to steal some of the stress that she had previously placed upon him, and so guarded the forest with a lonely heart. It went against every part of her personality, especially as the beginnings of a storm began to form overhead.

She considered leaving, heading back to the glass wall and then cantering across the land so that she might return to the floating island, but as she stepped to head south a foreign mind invaded her own. The sensation was striking- something she had felt only once before when the Lady Moon had called her outside of the caves. But this was not the Lady Moon, of that she was certain. Still, the command from the voice did not seem like one she should ignore and so she walked north instead, the last few notes of her music box fading into eternity as thunder rumbled.

When she reached the edge of the forest, the queen stopped, blue eyes falling to the ground. The clearing- that open area between wood and cliff where blood had been shed and a life had been taken. She had taken the advice of her friends, her goddess, her king... but she had not yet returned to this place. But she was trying, for Kaj, not to let fear rule her heart, so she nestled her glass basket with her music box and scorpion beneath a tree. Let them rest there, she thought. Better they be safe, should this stranger caller turn out to be more suspicious than welcome.

Lightning flashed as she emerged from the forest, illuminating the scene before her. She stiffed at first, caught off guard by the massive beast that was resting himself upon one of her rocks, but a second look confirmed that this was not a predator that she would typically be wary of. It was an owl, of the most beautiful coloring of course, and with that the queen smiled, thoughts of dead snakes and traitorous Seers gone from her head. “Hello friend,” she called, and was about to bow to the majestic creature when the words of the Lady Moon echoed in her head, briefly. Queens do not bow. She lifted her head and stood tall.

Intelligent eyes surveyed the Queen gently as she moved closer. She had bid his call, as he knew she would. He had been watching her - an amazing feat for a creature of his size to be sure. It had all started during Aurelia's challenge. The creature had been nearby at the time, and had watched the challenge with interest. He heard Kahlua's protests to be apart of such a mockery, and ultimately watched as her reluctance to hit back began to crumble. The truly intriguing part, came when Kahlua's hooves ended the life of the youngling snake who had, rather prematurely, been brought into the battle, and the aftermath that followed. The tears shed by the Queen, and the council she sought to try and reconcile her actions. A bird had told him of her visit of the Goddess, and the advice given there, although the smaller avian informant didn't believe that Kahlua had been fully convinced by the Goddess' cold logic.

It was because of this, because of the Queen's inability to simply harm another even when it was called for, justified, or needed, without bearing the weight upon her soul, that she knew she was the one.

She would watch over the other.

"Hello Queen." He responded in a conversational tone. His accent hinted at lands far beyond the Edge - possibly from the other side of the globe. He was well mannered and appeared kind, as his head tilted slightly, silently inviting her to him.

"Your services are required Queen. You, and you alone have been called on for this task, though I must warn you - " He paused, a smile appearing on his beak, as a golden-etched wing slowly pulled back. Therein, cushioned softly and cozily in his feathers, was a pale egg. The shell gave off a light iridescent sheen, that glistened as he moved it before him, holding it under the lightning filled skies. "-it is a task of a lifetime. Will you accept?"

Perhaps she should have felt fright at seeing the hulking creature standing upon the cliff's edge, but in all of her times in Helovia only one monster had ever really frightened her- that fire monster that had crawled from Helovia's heart. Vaguely, Kahlua wondered if the caves that had opened up beneath the Heart had once been that monster's underground dwelling, but she let the thought drift off as soon as it came. No point in dragging up an old nightmare when she had so many others to worry about each night. But regardless of that beast, none of the other mysteries that she had come across had ever been bad. She felt no fear in the face of this avian king.

His greeting, spoken through the sounds of a clicking beak, made the queen's ears flicker, but she smiled in return to his greeting and stepped closer, drawn towards the kindly fellow. Was he going to whisk her off the a strange, far away land like misty stag had, filled with a castle that reminded her so painfully of home and the family that had perished in the fire? It seemed not- he had a different task for her. She gasped aloud as he folded back a wing, revealing an egg nestled beneath. Would she accept? “I couldn't dream of saying no,” she replied, her soprano voice full of awe.

Slowly wandering closer, the queen reached out her velvety nose, hesitating to touch the thing, as though she was afraid this was a dream and that the touch would make this whole, wild scene disappear. But nothing disappeared as her nose brushed against the smooth shell and she nickered softly in pleasure and content. “One moment,” she requested, bounding off and quickly returning with an empty basket, the music box and scorpion left behind for the moment, lest they should take up too much room and the egg would not fit.

So she settled the basket at the owl's talons, and in that moment she was reminded of a different scene, a meeting that had taken place not so very long ago. Her smile faded as she recalled the words she had said to Kaj- that she feared love because love meant chains and cages, it meant lost freedom and loss of self. She did not try to stop the owl from settling the egg into the basket if he wanted to, but her voice filled with worry and she asked him softly, “How will I know how to love it?”

Love was easy, abstractly- to love a friend, to love a god, to love the life of others and loathe to take it. But to love truly and deeply, with the entirety of one's self, to give her life and heart and mind and soul to another... could she do it?

He waited patiently as she retreated to gather her basket, silently musing to himself as he watched the lightning flare overhead. Once she returned, laying the basket before him, his attention fell easily upon her once again. Unseen ears took in her question with a mild amusement - of course she would ask such a thing. He appeared to ignore her, though not rudely, as he set about his task. A razor sharp beak directed itself towards the feathers that adorned his wing and inner stomach, gently pulling out a few feathers here and there. Some were deeply stained with purple, will others bore the golden filigree that lined only his outermost feathers. Humming softly to himself, he dropped these into his basket, created a soft nest for the egg to be placed into. Looking down at his work, and nodding to himself, his golden gaze rose resting upon her once again.

"Because you already do, Kahlua." He answered simply, his confidence in her ability gently lacing each of his words. "Of this, I have no doubt."

Smiling to her, his wings suddenly rose from his sides. Softly, and in near silence, he took to the air. Lightning thrashed above, illuminating the brilliant of his feathers, as he disappeared down the rocky cliff-face, and into the stillness of the evening.

Congratulations! Kahlua has received a common dragon egg! You may choose the colour and its ability.
