The land could at last breath easy. Summer fire and brimstone given way to a cool stream of relief. Leaves in the excitement had already begun to throw a festival of color about the more northern lands. The landscape would ready for winter soon to be sure, but for now it was a celebration in the passing of the dead heat. Birds flirted and deer flirted about the fields in the late afternoon. Full hearts and last blissful moments before winter. That hard time seemed years in the future, just as the rising clouds seemed miles away. The temptress summer was not so joyous. Her green lands, and lavish sun filled days gone she rose her thunderheads once more. The clouds so far away, so distance from the mind came charging into battle, rising ever higher with threat. Summer would have her last revenge on the peace of the day.

Winds tore across the fields and though the trees. Contented creatures trembled with remembrance and took the warning well, scurrying to borrow and rock to hide. Rolling, rising clouds pushed through and blocked out the last remints of the fine autumn day. From then on, lightening would light the scene, and light it did. Crashing, rolling, and tearing across the plains and forests tore summer’s last furry. It rivaled all her previous dabbles in the weather in its ferocity and doom. All knew well to hide, and so the lightening lit only the empty plains, that is until he stepped forward, golden coat shinning like the sun reflecting the lightening back at the skies.

It was not his near unbreakable pride, and invincibility that had carried the golden out into this rage of a storm. No, as lightening flashed upon his rain haloed, wind torn features the gold is seem, near staggering, with head pulling low. This is not the same creature who stood tall and proud before a lord and lady, nor a smooth sly snake which tricked the mighty. This was a much older creature, a much more troubled stallion. Where others run a hid, clinging to love and self at every crack of the storm, he barely flinches. Was he asking for death? Was he deaf to the thunders of the world? Did some foreign force carry him far away from reality? Had all sense left his oh so powerful mind? Perhaps, it is all at once.

Birthdays were meant to be happy occasions. Celebrate your life with loved ones, and all that you have accomplished. It should have been happy, not a raging thunderstorm hell bound. Not alone. Not a reminder of all failures distances forgot. Gold body quivers, but it’s not the rain or cold. It’s the ache. The memories themselves raging inside him could not be equaled by any storm pounding that golden hide.

Escaping death was meant to be a happy occasion. Freedom from oppression, and a second chance to remake wrongs. It should have lifted his shackles, not doubled them. Not drowned him. Not a funeral over those broken things such as chains, hearts, and justice. But it was. It was a hell the bound him in bars. It locked his golden ways away with only a single memory. It drug him through storms, and carried him to places he rarely sought. His heart.

A cruel joke of nature to replay exactly the hells of memories. To match day with weather, too bring memories too close to the surface. The golden had made a new life here, beyond all the past. Such pains had been taken to forget and remember no more of that version of golden man. Now to have it rain down on him harder than the storm’s touch could be nothing more than torture. He had moved on, regained himself. His mind was a powerful, cunning king. It had rid itself of any traces lingering of honor, worthiness, and sacrifice. Why could his heart not forget such a simple feeling as love for a girl and child?

Teeth ground deep and golden legs finally halted. Breaths became pained. Wind ripped across his frame, tearing mercilessly at those fine white locks. Twin horns remain solid though, oblivious to the rage around him for the rage inside. At last, the temptress summer could take this creature’s insolence to her might no longer. CRACK. Lightening ran not a mile from the gold and it woke him. Perhaps her might was blessing, for little wake from such pains on their own. Wide earth eyes searched for light, only catching glimpses of his world through the light of death striking the earth. It was not panic, no hard emotions could rise from that weary soul, but it had at least opened it once more. Stopped the black hole from falling in. Golden body moved with a sleek stealth across the mud ridden meadow to a thick outcropping of trees.

Whole body shook with force, before raising that Spanish head to look back out. Gold dusted eyes could hardly believe what he had crossed, but again, they were diluted and weak feelings. Sides heaved heavily, mind and soul would mend again. It would take another healer though. Perhaps one to remind him that the life he left in the rain, was washed away in the strength of a new one. No, those chains would never go away. The ache never heal. The black hole never close. But they could be put aside and forgotten. It was a distraction. That’s all he needed, a distraction.

We’re born with millions of little lights shining in the dark
And they show us the way
One lights up
Every time you feel love in your heart
One dies when it moves away
Its getting dark in this heart of mine.

Beneath a lonely tree copse on the vast plane, the queen stood solemnly. Nestled between her hooves was a basket, several purple or orange feathers lining the bottom that were slightly damp with rain that had ricocheted off the grass just beyond her shelter. Mecha scorpion clicked and whirred between her ears, seemingly upset with the wind that was jostling her mane about. The machine was having difficulty finding a steady place to maintain its position and, though it was only a robot without feeling, Kahlua had anthropomorphized the thing and justified its actions as annoyance at the wind.

For her own part, she did not mind the chaos of the brewing weather. It felt fitting for her wild heart and the struggles she was attempting to sort through. Love for Kaj... but would love ever be more than just a chain? Love for this egg... but could she ever welcome another into her life so completely? She had no secrets from the world, if only one would ask for her opinion, and yet she was determined to be frightened of something that was supposed to be so freeing and beautiful. So here she stood in the wild winds as rains began to pour, the clouds threatening more violence to come, trying to find answers to questions that would change her mind. But did she really want to change?

A lightning crack made the queen jump, blue eyes looking nervously outwards. She had gotten stuck here beneath the tree's boughs. She did not wish to venture into the maelstrom for fear of her basket catching the wind and blowing clean away but it did not feel safe here beneath the bending branches and trembling leaves. Was there evil in this tree? No, there was no evil in nature. Only the evil that horses put there to ruin the sanctity of what had been created by the gods of the earth. If there was something to fear in this tree, it was only her own heart.

Looking up from the silver egg that shimmered so frightfully beneath her, the queen spied between the trunks of several trees and found a familiar beast daring to try and tame the storm. His golden frame was illuminated by the snap of another lightning bolt and she felt a lightness of sorts in her heart. Still, there was no smile on her face as she looked out to him. Troubles plagued her, more troubles than she had known when he had first approached her, but it was funny how serendipitous life was sometimes.

“Strange, how I didn't know you were the one I needed until you appeared,” she cooed before picking up her basket and moving around several trunks to be on the same side of the clearing as him. Gently, she replaced it on the ground, looking longingly down to its contents. For most that look would have been desire for the hatch of the creature yet growing in it's calcium coating. For Kahlua, it was only a desire to hear the tune that the little music box played when its button was pressed. Unfortunately, the gale that surrounded them would have quickly drowned out the song. It didn't really matter, she knew the sounds by heart already, but to hear them aloud sometimes gave her comfort.

When she looked upon him, she hardly noticed the pained look that might have rested on his own face, so lost in her own sorrows as she was. Without asking, for she trusted this beast immensely already, she dove into her story, or at least a portion of it, her voice just loud enough to be heard over the storm but lackluster in all other qualities. “My past has taught me that love, real love, is nothing but chains and cages.” Not the love between families... that sort of love came with its own set of rules and hardships. The love between two that might cuddle together in the night, hunker down in this storm, press together- love between two whose hearts beat as one.

Sighing, shaking her head, she shifted the direction of her story just slightly, blue eyes looking towards him with pained curiosity, hoping to see understanding there on his face, not the pained look of horror that had found its way onto Kaj's. “Do you know what I desire more than anything? More than friends or family or magic or fame or power... more than life?” She cocked her head, never considering that these deep philosophical musings might be beyond what he wanted to hear or discuss in the moment. “Freedom,” she sighed softly, looking away from him to the darkened sky.

“If you chain me, you may as well kill me... my crown nearly has.” There- she had admitted it. To a living soul, she had said that the queendom was not all she had expected it to be. She had grown stronger and better for her commitment to the herd, to her Moon Goddess, but that did not mean she was always happy. She was willing to suffer for the betterment of the herd, because that was what had been asked of her... Oh, see what love had done to the fool of a queen? “Can I love him and still love myself?” she finished, lowering her nose to press against her basket as the scorpion whirred its distaste for some matter or another. Could she? Or would love always mean chains, and would chains always mean death? She hoped he had some council for her, for certainly she had none for herself. Did it matter if the golden thought she meant the egg or some living soul? She doubted it would change his answer.

Fate must feel guilt. It must look down on the places and times it has put creatures and regret its previous carelessness. That is really how blessings come to the undeserving. Voice breaks over the storm. A soft, caressing, dove coo. Had it been another day, with other weather a smile would have spread about in reminder of a successful stealth. Now though, in this place, it gains her only a small jump, but slow turning of the twin horned. Earth eyes were still looking hundred miles beyond her, but they were looking at her. The damsel queen.

Maybe it wasn’t guilt though, perhaps it was pity. The golden son must have been quite a sight. Light tassles, were longer but still had no chance against the wind and battering rain. They curled and rolled in a mess about that Spanish cresting neck. Golden coat was soaked, and hide shivered and flinched with the cold. Small leaves and late flowers completed the look of complete disheveledness. It should have been a clue to anyone who knew that all was not well. Yet what did this damsel know. What could she ever know of the troubles that pound his breast and tear him apart? Now she needed him. To solve a crossword puzzle? To tell her why the sun disappeared? The girl couldn’t even see a tree in front of her, it was a little purpose to try.

So he stands there. Harks in her direction. Eyes barely focused. It took a moment to remember her completely, to bring back more present times. With each seeming remembrance, invisible perhaps to her eyes, he focused. The gold knew there was a part to play, and it didn’t include walking out on her. So he lets her talk. Storm raging out beyond, but her soft words coming like whispers in his ears. Of course the girl can think of no one but herself so she speaks out without asking. Prepared for some sad tale of a bunny rabbit who won’t make friends with her, the golden son does not through much effort into his guise. It was a mistake.

Was she speaking of her past or his only backwards? His softened, but still blank stare holds as she speaks her peace. Inside though, is confusion. Love is chains. How could she know? What did she know of the weight of those chains?! How could she possible wrap her mind around it?! Oh but perhaps she is a lucky one who feels it not. The world could not understand. He could not understand. For all his golden talents even the gold could not read his heart. Oh woe the weight of those chains. They felt so light, so joyous, then any little unsettlement and it all comes crashing down.

What does a little damsel desire? A pet? A parrot? The golden obviously still wasn’t really listening. His mind and soul still too dark and swirling. It was a distraction he needed, but this storm was thick and deep. Freedom. Gold dusted eyes flash. Awakened. Head lifts slightly at its mention. Freedom…from what? Was not freedom but another version of chains? This damsel spoke of that which she knew not. Hark flicked back for a moment. Was the gold not free? Was he not the envy of every creature? His own agent. Could go where he pleased, when he pleased. Was this not freedom? Was him standing in the middle of a lightning storm, completely unaware, also freedom?

Mind was moving forward though. She was pulling him. He knew not how, but the heavy weight upon his back eased. Eyes began to really see her. Blue eyes looked heavily out at the storm. A scorpion danced around her poll, and beside her hooves was a basket. Delicately laid in the basket was an egg. Little time was given to ponder these though, besides that his attention could not be held long in this world. The damsel speaks again, and this time at last he can focus on her. Not that her small troubles were his concern. Only they weren’t small. Her crown has killed her. She desires it not? Head moves further towards her as if taking in her words. The damsel queen wants not to be queen? Her job is so easy though next to her knightly king. The Pegasus, Kaj, stood out well in the golden’s memories at the lunar eclipse on that damn floating island. It was an easy job, with bonuses of protection, and her king’s affections. Earth eyes had spied from his corner the way they had gazed into each other’s eyes. Why on earth could the damsel desire freedom from this? It should be every little filly’s dream to be a queen such as her.

The damsel had been to kind, so thoughtful. How then could she turn so cruel in one question? Golden head, having found height in purpose at the conversation, now lowers. Sides shuttle out a rattled sigh and eyes can no longer look at her. It wounded him. What did he know of love? His love led to nothing. That’s what the child had been, a nothing. Pangs flinched about him. Answer her. She demands an answer. A quick fix to her problems. She’ll never see there is none. Never a solution for- “Love….” It was barely a whisper. Earth eyes look up. It really was a pity she knew not his lies from his truth. Perhaps then she would see this was no lie. “Love is putting someone’s needs before yours. Trusting they will do the same.” It bit him. It stung. Is life one of those needs? He had put her needs before his though! He had put their child’s needs and look how it left him.

It cost him everything. Why then did he still speak this broken truth? Because, even broken, it was still a truth. Lies were so much easier to tell than truths though. Why could he not tell this damsel queen who thought him a whole other unicorn, a lie to clean this whole mess up? He was the master of disguise, the king of manipulation. It would be barely a word from his tongue to clear the confusion. But her heart was not the only one broken. Those kinds of words cannot heal hearts. Trying hard to keep up is charade the golden tries to look comforting with a concerned gaze, and hopeful smile. “If it is love, the price will matter not for in his love you will find all you really need. If you need freedom, his love shall send you soaring above the heavens.” And if you do not hold it tight you find you’ve lost everything you need. Your life will go on, but never as full. Never a complete piece. You’ll have a permanent weakness, a near deadly one. No lies, no mask can hide it from yourself even if the rest of the world can’t see. You will know. You will be the lost. The homeless. The hungry. The golden son.

If she had known what disdain the golden felt for her, for her simple mind and child-bright views on the world, she might have not have trusted him with all of the terrible secrets that rode in her heart. She might have run away from this copse of trees, into the deluge around them, to shed her sorrows with tears that would be camouflaged as rain instead of words that left her soul as open and vulnerable as they could be to this monster wearing his golden mask. Perhaps someday someone might reveal his atrocities to her and she would cry for a lost friend, but his mask was perfect to her, unmarred, unstained, uncracked… She would find no chink in his armor because, as he had so kindly pointed out, she couldn’t see it at all.

Indeed, she spoke of which she knew not. She wanted freedom… she said it allowed and she could feel it in her heart, but how many times had she called wanderers lonely? How many times had she invited them into her home so that they might garner company and friends? And hadn’t she hated that year she spent alone, wandering the woodlands by day and shivering in the dark by night? Did she really know what freedom meant, or did she only love the idea of freedom? Perhaps, it was simply that the queen wanted to eat her cake and have it too.

No one should ever hand a child a crown- they’ll only break it.

But it seemed she had broken the golden too, who sighed and looked away from her. She frowned, suddenly remember that lady Illynx had had been cruel enough to destroy the golden’s love, whomever she might have been, and here she had come traipsing up to him in this storm and likely brought back every bad memory of the moment, of the history, that he had shared with her. She sighed herself, at her inadequacies. She had not meant to be cruel, had not meant to pain him, but she clearly had and she lamented her inability to even seek council without causing pain. She had broken Kaj’s heart, now Thranduil’s… whose next?

Love, he whispered, and she looked up from the ground she had been staring at. Putting someone’s needs before hers, trusting they will do the same? Her mouth twisted and pursed, her eyes closing. She loved her herd, had proven it by fighting Aurelia, killing the damned snake, putting their needs before her own, but loving the herd was… abstract to the queen, a duty that had been assigned to her that she had taken upon herself. It was forced love- a love she had not been given a choice in when the Lady Moon had descended from her midnight throne in the sky. But this love for Kaj, this love she thought she felt and that she wanted to be able to give him… This was a voluntary love, one she had found in her own heart first- but the golden made her question even her own heart.

Was it really love she felt? Would she really put her own thoughts and feelings before Kaj’s without hesitating to do so? She knew Kaj would, had even, but herself? She was a selfish coward. Was it the selfish coward’s rite, then, to never be able to love, by the definition the golden had given? Her eyes returned to the ground as she tried to work this all out. His next words didn’t help much, giving her no peace in the matter. She did not find this love to be freeing at all. She found it to be the very death of her. Perhaps she had been wrong, then, to say she loved him at all.

She turned, pressing her head firmly against the nearest tree, feeling the bark as it scraped against her flesh, fighting back tears that she knew would come anyways. She wished the pounding rain would disappear, the lightning, the wind, the howling. Strange, then, that as she wished it, it seemed to happen- she could almost feel a sort of magic flowing through her, making it happen. Cautiously withdrawing her head from the trees, Kahlua turned to find that the rain pounding down was building up a wall around the copse of trees, hardening with glass-like clarity, protecting and isolating herself and the golden, an exit from the walls found beyond the trees on the side she had come from.

And, when the structure was done being built, the queen felt exhausted but also whole again. She could craft?! She knew not where the magic had come from, but found it to be a ray of hope when all had seemed lost before. And even the torrential downpour seemed farther away now, as the beads of water beat against the glass instead of herself and the wind blew around her, but not through her anymore. But the questions she needed answers still haunted her, still demanded to be heard. At least now she could speak without falling to tears, as she had threatened to a moment ago. “Can love ever be anything different?”

This was a mighty happy lot. The two creature still whipped about the wind, lost in their own stories of love and heart ache. Misery was supposed to love company, not the other way around. How could you expect the golden to give the poor damsel a happy answer, look upon this creature. Look past he who trumps around with a happy flip of his prideful head, and a spring in his gait. Truly look at the life you have cannot see in a glance. See him who fought for love and lost. He who lost that which he loved and could have loved in the process. See the coward that slipped away in the night of storms to turn his back on her. Examine if you will the arrogance, and brash acts, and know they only provide a distraction, a tv screen forever keeping the ache locked away and quiet. How could such a creature give this damsel queen, who so gently reached out to him with her pure ways, the answer she sought? The one without pain, suffering, or sacrifice?

It leaves the girl in a matching agony. Hark lifts hearing her head press and scrap against rough bark of a tree. It pulled him, as before. Perhaps her words won’t break it, for there seems to be more going on. He was focusing on her so quickly. Her eyes closed she couldn’t see this reaction, but we can. The twin horns rise to look at her, tassled tail curls pensively close. A bubble seemed to press his chest and some unease more pressing than the well-known one knocks gently. It lifts a front hoof and tips his muzzle to her. The golden is going to touch her? Comfort her? She was a damsel girl, with mind that could never meet his. She is not worth his effort. What good can come of this?

Thankfully, it is ended before it goes too far. The gold was rarely unthinking, but this night was proving to cause all sorts of ill thought out schemes to rise. Rain patters on something hard, like a clinking. Head curves about to look out at the storm to find it slipping. No, that can’t be right. Body straightens and pulls itself more together. A glass dome began to grow on all sides of the small shelter, locking away the two into a quiet room, away from the world. Gold harks lean back and the gold let concern flow upon his face. But when he looks back to that damsel queen and sees her childish face so much lighter, all is mended. It was her doing, magic. They both needed the peace. It was the agreed need for it that silenced any outward recognition besides looking about it. The golden was more solid now, the storm seemed far away, and this girl was certainly a well-paid distraction. Good thing it didn’t go too far, and he touch her, it would have ruined this.

So the girl found some inner core, a solid footing. She seems still to hesitate, golden harks wait for the coming question. Could love be different? The gold was more prepared this time, and regaining himself. Head did not bow, nor heart sink, though a running drip of water down his shoulder caused the flesh to flinch, but that is unrelated, of course. The gold was always keen to say his final word. He thought through his mind before he spoke, so why would it be any different from as he said? It could not...could it? Was his answer he had crafted not suited to her tastes? It leaked in his mind that the golden was not seeing her well enough. Too deep in his own self worries to carefully watch her as before. That surely was it. Still, as he searched for another answer, he could find none. That was the only definition of love he knew, and for once he let himself be blinded to seeing the forest.

Ironic really, but not humorous to the golden son. He was not used to being without an answer. Luckily, she was drawing him up and out, returning his mind to him. It may not have an answer but it was never without an escape plan. So as those earth eyes look down buying time, they spy that small basket, and carefully cradling a small egg. The gold knew not where this would lead, but at least it would keep the absence of an answer from going unnoticed. The damsel girl was always one to make up her own stories. Perhaps she’d think this her answer. “My friend why do you cradle an egg from another creature so carefully?” Would this lead to some lesson on love? With any luck.

Her question had no answer except the pounding of the rain against the glass walls. Even Thranduil, who spun yarns of golden silk from piles of murky nothingness could not find an answer to her query. Or, more likely, there was no answer other than the one he had given. She supposed, what it really came down to in the end, was that love was not for the selfish. No matter how she might try to convince herself otherwise, no matter what others might see in her, there was no denying it- her heart and soul were selfish. She cared about herself more than others and given the chance, she would save her skin first.

Oh, sure, there were moments were she would do anything for her herd, but how real were those moments? Had she really been fighting for the herd when she fought Aurelia or Farenjar? Had she really sought out magic from the gods for her family or for her own selfish gain? Had she, had she, had she… So many questions. They just added to the list without answer that she either refused to want or try to solve. They were mysteries left covered by a sheet, left dusty in the corner. And while her niceties and games were no act, it had always been to her benefit that they covered up the worse parts of her personality.

So instead of being upset that there was no answer from him, no reconcile for her broken heart, she smiled at his words and half-closed her eyes in memories. “A massive owl found me at the cliff ledge of my home. He gave me the feathers the egg sits on, and the egg itself.” Then, opening her eyes wider, she even managed to chuckle. “It was quite a sight to see him fly.” Where he had come from and where he had gone to since were yet mysteries to her, for she had never seen him in the Edge before, but he seemed to have some knowledge of her and her home.

“He gave it to me to watch over and care for, so that when it hatches I’ll have a companion… I’m afraid.” The admission was nothing new, the queen was frightened of many things, although this fear was much more abstract than she was used to. “I’m afraid I won’t know how to love him.” That’s what she had told the owl, after all. How would she know? He had seemed to place a lot of faith in her, but now the painted queen was not so sure. At any rate, there were other mysteries to solve.

“Why were you trying to drown yourself in the rain?” she offered with a laugh, trying to lighten the mood as the water continued to beat against the temporary enclosure she had erected. Even now, the queen still found herself looking at it, wondering where this wonderful gift had come from.

Can you keep a secret? A small little secret? Alright. I’ll tell you, but you must promise it goes no farther than us. Promise? Good. Thranduil doesn’t always have control of the room. And usually the one he loses control of is himself. Luckily for him he is a very talented liar. But we’re jumping ahead of ourselves. The golden was still recovering at this point. The damsel queen is lower at his returning question than he hoped. His chest actually growing the heavier for it. Again, it is well these things can not be seen and do not come to pass through action. The moment passes. He watches with earth eyes growing sharper as she smiles telling her tale. Listening the golden sighs long and heavy as the girl returns to a lighter mood for a moment.

So the girl would have a pet. Was this what she was afraid to love? Hmmm, perhaps he had misjudged her fear of that winged knight? Doubtful. Those who are afraid to love usually do so universally. Still he looks down at the egg and even manages a fake smile at it, though really he’d rather lift that cloven hoof and end her problems of love the quick way. That was not the golden she knew though, so he looks up to her, finding upon her face full of worry and anguish. His smile grows thin. Say something. But what to say? Her story was to be an answer for her, but she still looked to him. The golden shifted, but as always he found something to say. “My dear…we are an amazing race, capable of thought and finding the rational worries.” Then he lets himself smile and chuckle, “But sometimes, as powerful as a mind we have, our hearts know better.” They were also easier to read, lucky for him. There was a pause, a time when a normal two would reach out with comfort and nose her gently. It was there. Time waited for it, but the golden moved on. “Love is many things, but if it is true you won’t have to force it. It will pull you. Let it pull you.” Did he believe it? Who knows anymore.

The golden was himself. Fate showing him a kindness in the company it sent. He thought. He of course, was wrong. She asks another question with a laugh. A LAUGH. Frozen though he was it suddenly seemed to get very hot in this enclosure the girl had made. It seemed to squeeze in too. A laugh haunts his breath, sickened and twisted. Closer. Closer. Damn he couldn’t breathe. The gold broke contact with her. He forgot himself. He rushed from her. Those gold legs dancing him to the side to find the glass was. Snapping away he darts to the other side. Gah, blocked again. Where the hell was this> Twin horns toss about, legs braced and wide. Breath came like he had run a mile. Away. They could not know. No one could ever know. He had promised himself. And more over She could not know. It was one thing to wallow in a hidden world. But to ask about it. For the outside world to ask about it. It made it REAL. It made it CLOSE. Too close. Away. He had to get away.

What secrets the golden held within himself- about love, desires to crush her egg, and otherwise- were hidden to the queen, her blue eyes only seeing the lonely and wandering friend that she knew to exist. Lonely and wandering and wet, at this point. Would there ever come a time when she learned of the evils that permeated his heart, the twisted and secretive nature that ruled his life? Would she never know that this golden knight was nothing more than gold-plated, a shiny covering for a less desirable center? It was doubtful, for the queen saw only pure light emanating from his heart, casting warmth even where the sun did not shine.

As for his words, the queen could not say she always understood them. He spoke of mysteries that she couldn’t always comprehend, of thought and rational worry that she could not always manage, but she smiled and nodded anyways, playing along with his lecture and ensuring him that he was a good teacher. She would not want to hurt his feelings or alienating him just because she was a fool. After all, she wanted friends and she wanted to be liked. She wanted to be happy and she wanted to be helpful. She could have none of those things if he escaped from her stupidity before she could really ingrain herself in his life. That, or if he escaped before she could bring him back to the Edge. Some day she would- he was sure to be happier there than in the wilds- but she would not press the issue for now.

As for love and letting it pull her… she found that to be the most honest and helpful advice she had thus far received from anyone she had asked. Letting life pull her in its stream was something she understood, something she could think about and imagine she would enjoy. Much of her life before the queendom had been comprised of letting life pull her this way and that. In some ways life still did, although the turns she took were not nearly as random as they had been. Bobbing her head, she was about to respond when something very odd began to take place.

Startling backwards, the queen raised her head in surprise as her companion began to flutter this way and that in the glass enclosure, as though he was seeking escape from the dry location and release into the maelstrom outside. For a moment she just took deep breaths, trying to maintain calmness while the golden seemed to panic, but in the end she didn’t know what to do. Tossing her nose towards the opening she had left on the other wise, she suggested meekly to him, “You can go if you need to?” And indeed, the statement was more of a question than anything else. Stepping forward to stand over her basket, to protect it from the golden’s wild tirade through the glass hut, she waited to see what would happen. “Did I say something?”

You couldn’t let them know. You couldn’t let them see. If they knew what world you really lived them it would all fall to pieces. Everything you had built after that had been based on never reliving that moment. It’s how you trace about the lands in a flash of pride and power. It’s how you are able to laugh and flirt with the ladies like there’s no care. It’s how you can twist the truth without guilt. Because it isn’t real. This life it’s not real, but that’s always been for the best. If it’s not real then you can make it what you want. Make it a world without such horrors as those you ignore, and you a golden angel without a fault. That’s all you’ve ever wanted isn’t it? To be without fault. No wonder when it surfaced the world came crashing down. You are not just with fault but a dark and sinister evil. The world does not allow such evils to continue unpunished. You should not exist.

Sweat trickled down under the gold coat, and his flesh trembles at the strange caress. Chest caves, then can’t stand it and gasps for air, drowning. So when that damsel speaks and the gold’s wide earth eyes turn to her, it is understandable that he can not comprehend her here. What was she doing here in this madness? She shouldn’t be here. No one should, but especially her. The girl was innocent, too unknowing of the evils to know such a panicking web he is now caught in. What had she said though? Twin horns twist to the side and body stills for a moment. He can go? Gold head pauses and moment then finally looks to the door, but it doesn’t seem to calm him much, nor does he bolt towards it as he would have moments ago, for now something else is working. Caught as he was in a windstorm in his mind the air was sparking with threat. He could handle it. He had lived through it before. But she? The damsel who reached out through this terror to…help? It was incomprehensible. Dangerous. Reckless. Did she know that? No…of course she couldn’t comprehend the full world the gold now struggled through. But that’s what made her actions even more dangerous, but also, more precious.

Then she moves, stepping over her precious basket and egg. Golden harks pin and his steps back, but not in anger, but in fear. Now he sees why she did so dangerous a step. Fear. She fears him. No….that’s…she shouldn’t. He wouldn’t…but he almost had. No, she was in danger, she feared it. She who knew not of the evils she faced could not possibly defeat them, and it threatened her. The damsel had nothing to shield herself. How could she possible create weapons against that which she was blind to? She would surely fall against this evil. No! She couldn’t. A tentative step forward is his chance, but he stops there. The girl’s lips part once more and it brings to head this new fear, her safety. He fears for her safety, from him, and it unsettles him all the more, but not in the panic which just tore him apart, but in a deeper trouble. One he should be able to stop but he can’t trust himself to. He can not stop the madness which just consumed him and tore him asunder from reality. It was not safe for her here, so he would go.

Oh but to leave her fearing it was her own doing. To see her pensive face, and face traced with fear, it wounded him. So the gold stumbles over himself in concern. “I….I’m sorry.” He could not leave her like such. She wanted more, he had to fix this. So he falls to old habits which always seem to work so well. The damsel wanted an answer, but the truth would not do, she would not understand it. So he shall protect her with a lie. For her protection from the evil and true danger she just placed herself the golden would spin her the tale which always seemed to placate her before. “Memories….” No! It wasn’t enough. Something else, think of something else. “It will pass.” Better, keep going. “I’m sorry I upset you, it was not your fault.” He glances down to her precious basket. Now, all should be mended, time to leave the girl before more danger arose. Those earth eyes look back up to her, and seem to grow more distant. “I should go…take care-“ and be safe. But he does not finish it and instead turns, and with low head moves off into the storm, which has settled to just a steady heavy rain, its force spent.

How do you move on from this? This crash of the past, and dangerous blooming flower of a future you can not follow? Well, you forget of course. You ignore it. It never happened. Distance makes the soul forget. It pacifies fears, and makes the strange understandable. In the morning none will know, and you can move through this place again without a second thought to what hell was just opened. And her? What if you see her again? Well, it was just a ploy. Just a charade as before. Nothing at all real, and truthful about what happened here.

You saw my pain washed out in the rain
Broken glass, saw the blood run from my veins
But you saw no fault, no cracks in my heart
And you knelt beside my hope torn apart
