THERE'S A STORM WARNING JUST FOR YOU

Surroundings: Dragon's Throat - near the oasis
Time: Afternoon
Season: Frostfall

Restrictions: None
Timeline: Regular

The days had become surprisingly regular faster than Ampere could have imagined. It almost felt like nothing was wrong in life, that she hadn't fucked up, that the gods and the herd and everyone else didn't hate her, and that all around the world, tiny lives weren't suffering. All she had to do was stay here in the safety of the Dragon's Throat, ignoring the disgust which rose whenever she saw companions perched on shoulders like it wasn't an act of depravity. She had been, for the sake of smiles and friendship, and because just being disgusted and angry and yelling at them accomplished nothing int he way of helpfulness.

It actually felt... nice, aside from the churning in her gut and the heaviness in her heart. It was doable at least, and even if she was betraying herself and her namesake, she was happy, wasn't she? It felt like it could be happiness. She had a home, an actual home, and friends. Well, maybe a friend, but it was better than before, that was for sure. She had duties now, but she was free, in her own way.

Lies, some part of her hissed. It was quiet and in a way, frail, but it was heard and felt nonetheless.

Ampere closed her eyes, swimming in a world of darkness for a moment as she plodded casually through the sands. Her hooves were too lazy to pick themselves up all the way, so she sprayed sand with each stride. It mixed in her fetlocks and kind of itched, but it was a good kind of itch, the kind that reminded her she was alive and that this place was real and that nothing was perfect.
Nothing's perfect.

In some ways it suggested to her that this place wasn't the home boasting friends and freedom that she wanted; it came with that same, meek, though defiant voice. Yet just as easily she turned it around, back against herself, and used it to justify that the fight for companions would never be perfect either. They would never be free, would they?

She shook her head, blue eyes steadily shedding their lids to peer through the bright landscape of sun and sand, sand, sand. She was walking, because the oasis was just a couple steps away and she had finished her last patrol. Maybe after she got her drink she should get back on her wings and fly, it always helped cleared her head, though lately it hadn't. She just kept thinking about Sohalia and the God of the Earth and everything and at the same time absolutely nothing.

She stopped, sand sprinkling into the water's edge as she carried it with her. frustration prickled in the back of her head with a rising headache. She wanted to blame it on the sun, but this time of year it wasn't really a viable excuse, so rather than admitting she was angry at herself and confused with herself she ran away from it by plunging her head into the oasis. She drank great, heavy droughts, just like you weren't supposed to. Maybe she could drown out her thoughts. Couldn't hurt to try.

Tandavi</style>
i'll light a fire in your new shoes</style>

It is a good day to be angry, a good day for a fight. The advent of winter puts copper child and her ashy brother into a moody fit of ill-will, drives them to the edge of unhappiness without quite pushing them over the rim. The days grow short as the nights grow cold, tendrils of frost nipping at their ears, settling on the ends of their spines and refusing to give way to an amount of warmth. The boy has taken to near-hibernation, sleeping as often as he might be allowed, a shadow in the sand and a candle in the dark.

The girl wishes she could do the same, could sleep away the cold and dark and wake once more when the sun gains his reign. The breath which rises before her ears is aggravating, irritating; it is a reminder of another season passed, another span of time where she learned nothing, did nothing, accomplished nothing and remained lost.

Loneliness gnaws with teeth sharper than cold. Everyone here is a stranger to her, the family who promised their return gone once more. Some have been kind, but none have been close. She thinks of Sohalia, of Africa, of Andromeda and Cera and the handsome Hector and the buoyant Rei. She thinks of them, but she feels so little- she would fight for them, save them, but can't make herself love, can't fill more than memories with the ghosts of their scents. Emotion is frozen in Winter's barren clutch, and only hot anger can make its escape.

She snorts out her ire to the afternoon air, kicking at sand, watching it fall in a lackluster cloud. It sticks to her limbs, clings to her hair; she's covered with the stuff, but it's too cold for a bath. The Oasis is near, though, and she's beginning to thirst; perhaps some light company would distract from her rage. Gold-dipped legs stride in a purposeful path, wandering anxiously, nose blinded by cold- an ideal combination for making mistakes. She does not see Ampere until it is too late, the burn of her power and the stench of her scent polluting the air and making the girl balk.

At first she thinks the blue mare must be a mirage. The girl has heard nothing of Ampere's return, been told not that the pegasus would stride through these sands. Onyx eyes harden, memories running wild- I'll kill you! she'd shouted, and she'd meant it then, too.

Did she still mean it? Anger rises into her throat like bile, hot and heavy and ready to spew. Words build quickly behind her teeth, a slew of verbal bullets prepared to be shot. But the girl does not fire, though she speaks with sharp flame. "What are you doing here?" she questions, direct. What right do you have to be in my home? Who will you kill with your denial of truth? What must I do to make you leave, now?

Iron flashes bright in the child's burning eyes, and a winter wind tosses her dreadlocked silver mane. She is glad that Natraj is asleep, glad he is not here to throw himself at the mare, to unleash the anger he shares with the girl. She supposes she will have to explode for the both of them.

She does not see this as a problem.

It's a good day for a fight.

THERE'S A STORM WARNING JUST FOR YOU

The water gave her clarity as it swirled around her muzzle and up to her eyes. It even offered a small respite to the pounding in her head, a rhythm created by the marching of her thoughts. She sighed in relief, air bubbles breaking the surface of the moving water with audible pops. It brought back a flash of a memory; a small blue and black filly playing at a lake's edge, surrounded by family. Her mother was there of course, and her grandsire and granddam. There were uncles and aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews... all of which may not have shared her blood, but were ones she called family all the same. Happiness permeated the time then.

What was different then, from now? The Dragon's Throat was supposed to be her family, but why then did she feel like she had to pretend among them? She had never felt that way when she was younger. Was it just the ignorance of childhood, or had the family itself been different? They had not always shared the same land as it was here - borders and territories did not exist. Perhaps freedom itself was the answer, but that seemed far too broad to encompass something as intimate as family.

Ampere pondered for a moment, blowing more bubbles as she continued to drink, and then it dawned on her. With an excited gasp, one that nearly caused her to inhale water, Ampere flung her head up. Water droplets scattered from the edges of her muzzle which widened with some coughs, but all the while it stretched with a grin. Not freedom itself, she realized, her thoughts so excited they tripped over themselves. "Freedom as an idea!" she exclaimed, unable to contain it any longer. That's what she needed - horses who shared her ideals.

Maybe here the Throat and the Sun were supposed to be ideals, and that's what was intended to bind them together. Ampere certainly shared those beliefs, to a degree, but she could not deny the one that beat strongest in her heart, and not just the companions. They were at the forefront to be sure, but the principal behind them ran strong in many of Ampere's choices. If she could find horses that shared that principal, slowly but surely, she could build something like a family. From there, who knew, family helped you accomplish everything.

Before her epiphany could continue any further, a sharp voice cut through it, throwing Ampere so off that she visibly flinched at the curt words. She felt like she had been standing for a day and a night, chasing her own tail within her mind, but it had really only been seconds after she pulled out of the water that Tandavi came. As such, Ampere's clarity was easily muddled. The headache that had submitted to the back of her skull crawled forward to rest just behind her eyes. Ire set in the lines of Ampere's lips, even more frustrated at having been chasing something only to lose it, than simply wandering.

"I live here," she snapped back, more on edge than she intended due to the hostile approach she was given. It was not surprising to her when her gaze turned to settle on Tandavi. The voice was too memorable, the anger in it especially so. Truthfully Ampere did not retain a grudge with this mare. The sun and moon girl was but one of the many enemies Ampere had acquired in her crusade, and she was certainly not the most annoying, nor threatening, of them. Yet Ampere went defensive at the tone, choosing to fight fire with fire, as she so often did.

Had she more sense she might have recognized the greater depths of Tandavi's heated nature, and just how dangerous they could prove. Instead Ampere only felt her headache and the need to stand her ground, wings ruffling along her back and her rump as she glared down her darkly marked nose. On a different day she might have reacted better, but all her frustration was coming to a head and this selectively ignorant girl was the perfect scapegoat. "Or have you failed to notice that too, like the truth?" Ampere hissed, her head dropping parallel to the ground, ears flicking back in anger. The insult wasn't much of a fair one, considering Ampere hadn't been aware Tandavi lived her either, but that hardly mattered in a cat fight.
