Sehrau

Hi

The Singing Sands

Across the Frostbreath Steppe there lies a large mountain range surrounding a deep valley. The valley is long but narrow, and is separated from the mainland by seas on three sides. The peninsula is home to pegasi that have never laid eyes upon unicorns or normal horses, and the residents there are capable of exotic magics. The pegasi in Sehrau tend to be breeds along the lines of Arabians and Akhal-Teke, with the occasional outsider bringing in fresh blood and new breeds to the otherwise isolated vale.

The terrain of Sehrau changes from dense pine woods in the south, to moorland, then to the northern desert. On all sides loom mountains, further isolating the small land. With the mountains, Sehrau weather sways between a wet and dry season. During the fall and winter months, storms blow in from the Frostbreath Steppe(known as the Snowfells to Sehrau residents) bringing rain and snow to the southern half of Sehrau. The north rarely recives any sort of rain; Pegasi that live there thrive off the cacti and roots of plants.

Pegasi of Sehrau honor five gods; The Sun King, The Moon Dancer, The Windlord, The Stone Prince, and The Wild Jester. Each god represents an element; Sun to Fire, Moon to Water, Stone to Earth, Wind to Air, and Wild to Spirit, and when the gods meet in one place they are the Court. If a foal survives it's first winter, it is taken to an Elder regardless of being a herd foal or not, and is given a patron deity. The foal then must learn to hear the deity they are given to; once this is achieved, a sort of enlightenment is granted and the foal is given it's Name. The Name of a Sehrau pegasi is kept hidden, granted only to the most trusted ones, for the Sehrau superstition says that the Name is a gift from the Gods that symbolizes what one will become once they pass on to the next life.

Along with their gods, Sehrau pegasi can control a form of wild magic they call the Sacre(sah-cray). This magic is not born with the pegasi, nor was it granted to them. They honor it as the life source of the very earth itself; it is the thing that dictates all life and the choices of everyone, whether they know it or not. A flower blooming is due to the Sacre, and an animal dying is also of the Sacre. To abuse such magic is the worst of crimes in Sehrau, for the very nature of the Sacre is gentle and pure. Violence is not of the Sacre, and thus violent things are shunned by all pegasi as unnatural or the doings of the Wild Jester.

Sehrau pegasi who achieve enlightenment as foals learn to hear the Sacre itself as a song. Each living thing in Sehrau gives a song to those willing to listen, and these various songs can be bent by a pegasi into a chorus generally celebrating or honoring something. Every pegasi has it's own song as well, and often strangers will approach one another and touch foreheads, sharing their songs. The song of a pegasi carries both their knowledge and their true self, and those with sour, foul songs are shunned by most, if not all Sehrau pegasi, and generally forced to leave Sehrau. Those with wicked intentions find no followers in Sehrau.

Only once in the entire history of Sehrau has a war been fought, and the land still bears the scars. Pegasus fought Pegasus when the trickster god, the Wild Jester, stole from the Sun King and blamed it upon the Moon Dancer. The two gods fought, and their pegasi followers did as well, bending the Sacre to their will to tear at each other with strings of song that cut like knives. Now, on the moorlands of Sehrau, there is a place with deep gouges in the earth with fire flickering in their depths, and no living thing grows there, for the Sacre was used for violent purposes, and destroyed itself in that area. Wandering pegasi that move past it pause to grieve for the place that will never be green again, before hastily fleeing. Because of the absence of song, it was named by the pegasi as The Silence.

If you'd like to make a pegasus from Sehrau, feel free~ And PM me if you have any questions on culture.
