I pick my way down the path that leads to our home. Damaris continues to trot ahead and barks happily, calling for Midas and Fina, or perhaps Ghost, our new co-leader. I can feel in her the affinity she has for Midas. He looked after her briefly while I was running to be Legatus, and her memories of him are affectionate and warm. 'Don't get too far ahead, love.' I warn gently in my mind; she barks again, paying me no heed. I check back to make sure that Khan, the black mare with pale hairs from the Threshold, is following behind me safely and not tripping and falling on her face. "Take care, the descent can be treacherous." And it can, to those who are unfamiliar with it. Once you're used to it, however, it's not so bad, and your hooves tend to find their own way down the dirt and gravel.

When we reach the bottom, I direct us over to the waterfall that is not far from the base of the path. Though Frostfall reigns here as it does everywhere, the motion of the running water keeps most of the falls in liquid form; only the edge of the pool seems to be frozen. I stand there and lower my nose to ice, sniffing it, acting as if I've completely forgotten Khan's presence. But as absentminded as I can be, I have not forgotten her. I look back to her, assuming she is just behind me, and begin to speak again. "This is the entrance to the Falls, my home. Midas and Ghost are our leaders." I turn around to look at her, and Damaris finally comes to sit at my side in the light covering of snow. "The Falls wants to include everyone in its activities, so while you are here you will find your place: crafter, warrior, healer, or spy. I believe we have Dröm as our current storyteller." The quick run down, as always. But at the same time, now who is the chatty Cathy?

Khan-Christine
"far from the maddening crowd's ignoble strife, their sober wishes never learned to stray" -Thomas Gray

Time itself seemed to slow as the contrasting mare observed the landscape set before her. The bubbling sounds of rushing water filled the air like a lullaby, calming any anxiety she had felt prior to entering into The Falls, as Rost had called it. The mare smiled as Damaris yelped and lept ahead, surely excited to be home again. Khan cocked her head, the smile straying from her lips as her attention was dragged back to the brute who had been her escort. Find a place? What could she ever be good at? Khan-Christine pursed her lips, mulling over the possibilities. Perhaps she could be a healer? No, she was far too queasy for that job. Warrior, maybe? Surely she could take a beating, though the thought wasn't appealing. Shaking her head, Khan smiled at Rost and continued to follow, slipping and sliding on the rocky surface. A frustrated look crossed the mares face for a few moments, cut by the look of fear when she slid too far.
"Oh shi-" She breathed, catching herself before she became a Khan pancake on the floor of the mountain. Khan glanced around, worried that anyone had seen. For a quick cover-up she began her normal banter. "It's beautiful here. I think it reminds me of my old home." The lady wondered aloud, watching the frostbitten world that she seemed stuck in. "How long have you been here, Mister Rost? You seem to know your way around quite well. Are you considered important? What's your job? Do you have a mate? Kids?" Khan spoke quickly, paying the majority of her attention to the rugged ground.

Ocean crashed on a cold empty surf. I’d risen early and traveled to the far side of our valley before the sun had risen, I’d come with every intent to scout, but ended up doing nothing of the sort. I don’t honestly know why I’d been pulled to this vacant beach, but here I stood. Staring out across the foam. My mind reeled with memories of a warmer time – years back when I’d felt like a young buck and not the old man this position head created. My soul was worn out, I was tired of trying. Tired of this world and its needless pain.

“How long?” quiet words came as a raspy whisper, meant for no one aside from Fina and perhaps the gods themselves. How long till what? The chilling wind quaked in return. My somber firechild nudged her head into the silken folds of my mane, she pushed against the hair and gently nipped fur.

“Midas?” an unspoken question hung between. Yon child would follow me to the ends of earth. Ebony crown shifted to regard her with one glazed honey eye. For many long moments I simply regarded her, saying nothing. She straightened and gazed over the horizon, “We could leave.”

My parents had been from a nomadic tribe; it was in my blood to desire travel, to desire adventure.

Nay, my soul replied gently from its core. Not yet anyways. One day though, I promised her silently, while shifting my attention back to the sea. One day we will travel across this body of water and into the unknown. To either die or find our own quiet paradise. A land without trouble or grief.

There were other worlds than these.

Eventually I left, to return to duties that were expected of a man in my position. Returning to the drag and danger of everyday life in a world for of fools. We flew back in silence, enjoying the company of each other without words. Our timing was perfect, we arrived just in time to see Rostislav escorting yet another newblood into our home. A lovely female with a sooty hide and alabaster locks that reminded me of snow. Damaris, the hellhound that was often close to heel stood near Rostislav, eyes searching the sky and nose grazing the ground. Obviously searching.

I spun low, angled toward earth and landed at a brisk canter in an open clearing. I caught her words, questioning his position and family responsibilities, my lips curled into a loose smile that allowed small traces of humor to come forward, “Yar, our Legatus is mated to his work.” Gaze shifted to him with a rare shine of playfulness kissing both corners higher, “As for children, he has a herd full of soldiers to tend to.”

I don't notice her trip on her way down, but hear her start to curse. I glance back lazily, eyes slightly glazed over. I am quite shocked by what happens next. First, Khan starts asking me all about my life here in the Falls. She's very inquisitive, and I can't help but wonder if she asks this many questions of everyone she meets. Or perhaps, dare I flatter myself, she's just that interested in me. I blink several times, trying to take in all her questions and remember each one as I prepare answers. The first thing that comes out of my mouth: "Uhhhhh...." Taken a little aback would be an accurate description. "Not sure how long I've been here. Since the Darkness?" Of course, I highly doubt she knows what the Darkness is - she wasn't here. But I have not been so great at keeping track of time. What drunk ever keeps track of time, hm? "I am a Legatus, so, one of the top soldiers. A general of sorts. I guess that makes me important?" I'm tempted to puff out my chest again with self-importance but.. nope, too lazy. That took care of most of the questions but then...

A mate? Kids? WHAT?! Woah, hey now... woah. Woah. I mean woah. SHhhhh....

Midas swoops in to save me. And before I can answer those last questions, he has taken over the conversation, much to my relief. I'm not sure even how I'm supposed to answer such questions. (I guess by saying "no, and no", but isn't that much too straightforward?) Midas answers for me. "Work? Soldiers? Uh, yes." How clever he is with his words - I'm not clever at all, not like that. But it is funny, and as his playful gaze meets mine, I laugh as well. Fair enough. "Yes, my naughty children that need a good spanking." I chortle. Glancing at Khan and then back to Midas, I begin introductions. I'm no caveman. "Khan, this is Midas, one of our leaders. Midas, Khan of the.. previously not Helovia." Hashtag awkwarrrd.
