At the outskirts of the Deep Forest stands a tree, not unlike its neighbors in height and foliage, but special for what shelters within it. There is a hollow within this tree, a woody cave that serves as a home for a colony of bats. Little bats, vampire bats. Not all that strange, for several colonies are scattered not only through the forest but across the realm, but there is something unique here. One mother has given birth to twins, but instead of letting the extra die, she has begged the largest of the males to summon someone else to take care of her offspring.

It is dawn, the sun just now lightening the sky to the east with pale colors streaming along the horizon, and the relatively big brown bat is sitting just outside the hollow, peering shortsightedly about for predators and hopefuls. He screeches and chitters, a small sound but out of place in the gathering light. He waits, she waits, it waits.

Vayu was not a huge fan of the forests, but the towering trees made for a good escape from the Throat's oppressive heat. He had flown here from his home, confused and alone, and landed just before the sun rose, folding his wings in a whirl of wind and leaves, staggering as his body crashed into the ground. Under the pale light of the dawn, he stood panting, eyes hooded and head bowed. It was a strange sight, seeing Vayu brought so low. The usually jovial stallion carried himself with sorrow; for he mourned, mourned the loss of his home. Sure, he was still allowed to reside within the Throat. A part of him was even glad for the invaders, for the end of the mad Order. This was a good thing. There would be no more oppression, no more fear.

Mostly he felt guilty. Ra was dead, and although the lion had somewhat lost it towards the end there, Vayu mourned for his friend. He hated for the zealot Ra had become, and mourned the strong stallion he had once known. And he felt guilty, so guilty, for not fighting. Maybe he could have saved his friend, prevented death... He shook his golden head in sadness. And then there was Enna, and his son, and that brought up a whole new mess of emotions within him. Did he love her? He wasn't sure. Did she love him, or was that just youth and hormones? So many questions. He didn't want to deal with them all.

A screech interrupts his musings. Curious, Vayu walked towards the forest, head tilted and ears pricked. It seemed... out of place. And searching. He shook his wings out, little whirlwinds forming behind his feathers, and looked around. A little brown figure caught his eye; curious, the pegasus approached the bat, white legs stepping carefully to avoid stirring up too much air. A pace away from the bat he stopped, and huffed gently towards the small creature. Vayu's mood was still less than sparkling, but he pulled a smile onto his face as he looked at the bat, bringing the old cheerful tone into his voice. "Hello, friend. What ails you, I wonder?"

For all his calling, only one came. He scrutinized this gigantic winged horse-like being a bit doubtfully, but dismissed his misgivings about this unusual development in his colony. It was for another that he was doing this, and her wishes her would fulfill.

"Nothing wrong with me. Little one need caregiver, you come. You raise little one." Without further ado, he scurried within the hollow and fetched the extra baby from the mother bat, the tiny body clinging to his belly as he scuttled back out. It was with effort that the male flew from the tree with his burden onto Vayu's neck, behind his ears. There he untangled the infant and let it cling to the pegasus. "Take care of little one, have friend." He departed then, fluttering back to his tree and disappearing into the dark hollow.

(Congrats Vayu!)
