Daybreak presented a flushed array of pinks and yellows, as the light of the incoming, spring warmth woke the land. The soft calling of the first returning birds hinted the season’s namesake, and even a few insects had sprung from their weather-proof hideaways. The air carried the moist, fresh scents of pine, wildflowers and wet earth, as the flora had begun to emerge once again. Unfortunately, mud still lined the forest floor, making the traction horrid, especially for those whose feet weren’t designed for such slippery conditions.

A large-bodied figure trudged through the muck, grumbling as he went. What had possessed the brute to wander this far west was beyond him! He had managed to survive his second frostfall, but had certainly developed a distaste for the unpleasant weather both during and following, despite the matted, sable-colored carpet that covered his back.

Ele had begun his trek long before the sky had gotten the chance to turn blue, though now the pale light of early morning was finally graduating into full-fledged sunlight. The rays danced among the evergreens, spotting the landscape with golden pools. The luminescence glinted off of the spiraling bone structures that graced the dark creature’s head. The spaces between the branches, where the sun soaked through, showered the massive equine with a yellowy-white glow that made his coat look a far paler shade of champagne than what it really was.

He paused, taking a moment to drink his surroundings. This neck of the wood bore an ominous presence that Ele had never sensed before. The trees were alive with some dominant force that persuaded one to venture deeper into its midst; one that the colt was happy to indulge. Ele lived for seeking out situations like this—where a force he could not explain compelled him to take an action that would seem somewhat odd to others. Normally, one would flee from this unfamiliar, uncomfortable, compelling feeling he was experiencing now. But the excitement of it tickled the beast, and so he continued on his way, scanning the strange place for signs of company, of one sort or another.

I wandered to the Threshold sometime that day, and fighting for the sunlight again on my back, I push through the forest. Searching for a spot where the sun filtered it's way through the cracks in the trees. I look up to see everything tangled and I wonder how it had ever gotten so ill cared for to be tangled up like that in a jumbled mess -but I don't mind it too much.- I didn't really care if nature decided to take it's own path, but if someone was trying to make it look like a knot of ugliness then I would say that this Threshold to Helovia didn't deserve such a thing.

I was unfair and mean to the other forest in the land. But I supposed they where something like this as well, being so tangled and jumbled.
Huh. Jumbled. I liked that word.

So I kept it; scanning the area for another being, I found him. A colt-like boy. A smile already upon my grey face, I push my way towards him. I think of the new Birdsong is flowering pretty well, and how he seemed thoughtful of this new land he found himself in. He was aware and interested and I like it. I like that feeling. So, I continued on, reaching him with a smile already on my face I try to make soft and kind eye contact, but grey eyes searching his own. I notice how his hair is knotted like the trees, and how the tree's roots where underneath the ground. Twisting and turning, searching for water...

His hair was gathered up in silver holders. Whatever they where. And his body was built like a draft, strong and muscled well. I look into his eyes once again and smile kindly.

"Hello, young sir."

Playtime was certainly long overdue and the little phantom had grown tired of the Basin and all its white walls. There was an emptiness thriving within the valley that made her restless, unkempt. She desired the rush of curiosity and excitement and show, as performing was one of her specialties. With spring blooming with new life abound just outside their borders, Solanine sought to wander, to explore. However, she hadn’t the slightest clue as to what mysteries Helovia kept hidden from her knowledge and so she travelled to the only known place of relevance- the Threshold.

Morning colors painted themselves into the sky above and even though the phantom was not one for marveling such predictable events, her wandering eye did linger briefly on the pinks and yellows perched above. But certainly not for long…

With the claiming ground just ahead, the little mare smiled deviously to herself before easing into the soft, sunrise shadows. She didn’t have any particular script in mind and instead settled for improvisation when it came to “recruiting” or whatever it was the Aurora Basin called it. The truth still stood that she had come in search of reward, payment in any form of the word… She was a greedy young mare with big dreams. Certainly her new… family would understand that?

But if they required… proof of her… devotion, then she would comply with the rules of supply and demand. They supplied her refuge and in turn demanded her allegiance. That was fair enough.

With bottomless, black eyes, the mare drifted aimlessly through the tall shadow of the wood in search of her very own sacrifice. She imagined that coercing another into residing in a land like the Basin was a feat in and of itself. As she pondered the idea, her ears titled left to the sound of conversation. Her expression danced with a new light, or vigor if you’re one to call it that.

With an Arabian build likes hers, Solanine was able to approach silently like the phantom she was expected to be. Her curious eyes returned the image of two creatures, both gifted with the oh so mythical horn . Apparently that was part of Basin requirements for whatever reason… the dunces. One was mare and the other not, but of course neither presented threat nor competition. Solanine was on a level of her own creation and an untouchable one at that. Leave it to the phantom to believe herself beyond reproach…

With neither the patience nor the manners to wait on their blooming introduction, Solanine moved forward, all stage directions on cue. “Welcome friends,” she trilled elatedly. “I’m Solanine.

A rustle in the undergrowth raised the small hairs on the base of the young stallion’s nape. Fiery, amber orbs shifted, coming to rest on a pale figure emerging from the brush. It was the first equine Ele had encountered in some time, so he stood alert, calculating her response. This strange, new territory could very well present beasts of his breed that bore menace towards outsiders. The sable stag measured the newcomer carefully, but her body language showed no signs of aggression. Soft, amber eyes focused on Ele, and the colt blinked back in curiosity.

The mare appeared almost as an ethereal being; her coat was a beautiful, cloudy sterling, with violet, wave-like patterns rising up from her barrel. Her horn rose tall above her crown, and the glassy gyrations glistened in the sunlight. When she finally spoke, Ele had begun to relax. He released a quick snort, retorting at the fact he was dubbed 'young'. Of course, the fair creature meant absolutely nothing by it, but Ele expressed his irritation all the same. His sensitivity always got the better of him, with little consideration of whether or not it was reasonable.

He had barely parted his lips to speak when another voice shattered the silence. The champagne brute nearly jumped out of his skin, as a third body presented itself. The stranger had failed to make any noise at all in approaching, and it caused Ele to feel brutally oblivious. He swallowed his embarrassment, and took a moment to observe the fae. Wide, obsidian optics pierced the peacefulness of the spring morning like a bright lick of flame in a somber twilight. The blanched bands that dressed the jet black of her pelt struck the colt with intrigue. The words she spoke were friendly, yet Ele still felt a fierceness behind them that made them feel a bit factitious.

It was a long moment before the drake could bring himself to form a response to the duo. He was surprised at how quickly the two femme’s had shown up. What had he stumbled into? Surely, this was no longer the vacant wilderness he once traversed! Ele cleared his throat and spoke, cautiously, “I apologize for my confusion, but where am I? Who are you?”

Another soul steps in, her voice calm and welcoming. I turn to see her, a midnight mare, a horn just as Cashmere, and...white bands around her face. She does not stare, because how rude would that be? I smiles kindly at the midnight spirit, and look to the boy once again. She speaks her name. A pretty one, at that. Solanine...pretty.

He however seems quite spooked at her sudden appearance. I am used to the quiet rustle and then pop. Another has joined you. Members of Helovia, no matter the rank seem to have that ability. I like that about them.
Well, I guess I should say some of them. No everyone can just pop you. I smile to myself before answering the boy's question with a soothing glance his way.

"This is Helovia, I reside in the lands of the Hidden Falls." I smile, chestnut eyes sparkling as I gaze at the boy. I quickly decide that I like the things holding his hair together. The shock at seeing them at first was simply because I had never seen them before. But now that I look at them, I feel like they are something new I have seen today.
And everyone learns something new each day. -How would you know that?- "I wouldn't.." I whisper, cowering behind a mental wall from the shadow of the spirit that lurked in my own mind. She never went away. I did not like her.

I soon realize that I had not introduced myself. I nod, and say "My name is Cashemere. And as I told you, I live in the Falls. I offer a home..." I don't want to call him 'young one' again, because he seems a bit too old to be called that. Or to even want to be called that. So, I go to asking his name, looking to the mare once before I speak again.

"What is your name, boy?" I ask, my gaze steady as I cast a kind smile his way. My words where not harsh in any way, nor demanding. Just in quiet questioning. Curiosity in which my gaze held, I stayed silent for his answer.

The young stallion appears to spook in response to the Phantom’s approach and her careful, murky gaze lingers warily on him before moving to the silver female. She, however, is quite amiable toward Solanine, all smiles and childish naiveté. It is hard for the little shadow to think ill of the young woman but she is not awarded any more than somber affirmation. After all, the Phantom is not one for idle conversation… Clearly she is a novice when it comes to engaging potential Basin pledges.

Moving closer to the pair in question, Solanine settles within the wide gap separating her and the two strangers. They are something of an awkward triangle, intent on feeling one another out and testing the waters of friendship, if one could even call it such. Solanine tilts her ear to the stallion when he speaks, his uneven tone making his statement all the more true. She couldn’t understand what there was to be confused about… Obviously he had stumbled upon a foreign land, her Helovia, and somehow he was surprised to find it inhabited?

Had he not noticed the stale fragrance of life wafting through the trees? Had he not noticed the ruts in the path where many others of his kind had worn through the topsoil?

As Solanine debates the many ways one could possibly be deceived by Helovia, she is momentarily distracted by the thick, grey mare as she relates from which land she hails. The Hidden Falls had not come to aid Solanine upon her arrival in the Threshold, but then again… she doubted her sister from the Falls here would find a true friend in the Phantom. Ophelia had been more convincing and so had her imagined life in the Basin… There were a variety of creatures existing all around her, all from various walks of life, so she didn’t see why this stallion wouldn’t fit right in.

Since Cashmere had taken most of her allotted time to offer the nameless man a home, Solanine felt it was in her own right to do the same. However, she had a much more precise way of going about things, as per her nature. “Yes, Helovia,” she maintained after a short pause to allow the stallion to interject between the two mares. “I come from the illustrious Aurora Basin. However if you must know, Helovia is made up of more than our two families,” Solanine asserted. Had she really called them family… she nearly spit from the foul taste swelling in her mouth from the word. But an act was an act and nothing more.

You see, I am quite new to the lands as well. But from what I’m told there exists a World’s Edge and a Dragon’s Throat as well. But you don’t see one of their members here… so here we are at a crossroad, unless you’re fond of the nomadic path you’ve come from. I’d be more than happy to escort you to the Basin with me. We have the most elegant Lady…” she revealed with a smile. “I think you’ll enjoy it there as much as I do,” she finished on a sigh. Solanine was such a dreamer sometimes and with her thoughts filled with Ophelia, she was suddenly feeling… generous?

A brisk wind tousled the young brute’s ombré locks as the silver mare spoke. As Ele tried to process what she said, his state of perplexity set in once again, and he cocked his head slightly to one side. ‘A home? What on earth—how did she know I was here? Was she expecting me?’ Strange, indeed, it seemed. Different conclusions rushed through the bewildered stag’s head, and he had to shake it to rid the distorting thoughts, and started over.

“Helovia?” The sable stallion echoed in confusion. Hidden Falls? Aurora Basin? Had he ever heard of such places? How many knew about it? How many actually lived here—fifty . . . a thousand? Ele was so focused on dissecting the puzzle laid before him, he hardly heard the next words that left the dame’s mouth.

The bister-pelted colt struggled to recompose himself, as the second fae cut it once more. She explained things a bit clearer than the first, describing a rather large and diverse population. She outlined her homeland, and emphasized one particular “Lady”. Was this creature a ruler of the black mare’s land? She must be. As Solanine’s expression softened, the stag felt a wave of relief. She was rather forward, and a strong personality certainly shone through the onyx orbs of her eyes, but as she spoke of this mysterious Lady, a gentleness crept into her voice and swept over her face.

After she finished, Ele cleared his throat, now better able to keep his thoughts organized. “Well, thank you both for welcoming me. My name is Elecampane,” he said with a polite dip of his head. The colt understood now that they were here to recruit him, and meant no hostility towards him in any way. It made perfect sense: this forest must’ve been where the outsiders funneled in from the east, and therefor a perfect place to collect wanderers and build up a herd. The adolescent weighed his options as best he could, but there was simply not enough information for him to make a decision right away!

His brown gaze shifted from one fem to the other, before he posed a question, “Please tell me a bit more about each of your homes—that is, if you don’t mind. I just want to know what I might be walking into. How are they run? What sort of equine reside there? And where are they located?” Ele knew very well that he was pressing the two. However, he was seriously considering the notion of becoming a part of this peculiar world. After all, what did he have to lose? He had spent the past year wandering aimlessly; he felt he had been alone long enough.

Personally, I thought the other girl, Solanine, was exaggerating about her queen. I could care less, but this girl made such a better introduction to the land of Helovia, I felt she needed to compete. Not too harshly…just…just a little. When he introduces himself, I nod in a way I never thought I would, trying to get his attention with a kind smile and wide, doe like eyes… I smile and then speak, hoping not to have cut of the midnight mare because I didn’t really feel like getting on her bad side. Not because she seemed mean and threatening, because she had a horn. And they where level…and I did not really result to stabbing when it came to getting even on whatever.

“I don’t mind at all! The Hidden Falls… -I can assure you, you are not walking into anything horrible- is a herd located in rolling forests, a valley protecting it. It is mostly hidden away from the other herds, though the Aurora Basin is easy access if you have wings…” –now you fucking blew it, dumbo- the Voice says in my head, and I shoot a glance at Solanine. “Not that they are planning any attack. They don’t really do that sort of thing…” I wonder to myself if I am lying to him. I did not know the plans the leaders held. I could not promise anything. But, I still smile, assuring and kind. “The Falls has a great leader, Midas the Gallant. And a beautiful Queen, Ghost. They accept all race to the herd, though equines who brake the laws will be outcast,” thrown into an abyss. I decided that was enough for then, and I would let the midnight mare speak. Why not, anyway? I was not like the vicious voice inside. Unlike Her, I was kind, and let others have a chance to speak before putting them down.

Excluding the putting down part. I would never do such a thing. Ever. –Your lying to yourself.-

Black, unforgiving eyes fall swiftly from task to glare openly at the grey one with apparent opposition. She speaks out of turn and out of knowledge for the Phantom’s home in the Basin, but Solanine does not scoff or smile or laugh in response. Instead she looks on quite obliviously and without malice… for now. There is something wicked deep inside that reaches for life as she listens to Cashmere relate childish assumptions clearly untrue in the face of fact. She looks as though tense or nervous with discomfort standing astride a mare all too settled with herself. The Phantom remains silent this time, waiting patiently for her turn and when it comes she slides knowing lips aside in favor of victory.

The young stallion desires answers, ones given with intent, and Solanine is of merit to give them without fabrication or folly. She folds toward him, her shoulders roll into position and her hips loosen, relax. “I know little of the Falls or surrounding regions friend, but I can assure you that the Basin is well obscured from foreign assault. The mountain peaks keep enemies from soaring in overhead for the air pressure at such heights would surely deter errant guests. There lies but one narrow pass through the mountains and only skilled eye or proper guidance would see one through,” Solanine relates softly, casually. Her gaze is steadfast and unseeing of her self-righteous competition, if even she is considered such. The Phantom is undoubtedly an arrogant creature but to add ignorance to insult… well, Solanine is also known to be vengeful. “Of course, should one happen to make their way through the passage… the sentinels would most certainly alert us,” she adds smugly.

The Aurora Basin takes after its namesake. The heat of summer never touches our bit of earth but beauty is known to thrive there. As I’ve recently discovered, the Basin is host to Helovia’s only known hot springs. When the sun kisses the skies farewell, a great many colors dance in its place,” Solanine concludes soundly. She is unsure how the young stud will receive the information she’s given but she feels it is enough and certainly more than convincing. The Phantom, ever salacious grins to the man before giving the grey a knowing gaze. Whether or not the stud follows her home, Solanine has obtained success in at least one of her ventures.

The stud’s gaze drifted downward, as he contemplated what the two mares said. Solanine had a far more convincing argument, and Ele’s curiosity of these “colors in the sky” she spoke of tormented his thoughts for a long moment. He had heard of such phenomena of course, but had never had the opportunity to witness it himself. In fact, the champagne stag had previously believed it to only be the stuff of legend. The notion of the hot springs was rather compelling as well.

However, Ele knew very well that if he was to join a herd, it could not simply be for the landscape they would reside in. He wanted his presence to be necessary—as a cog in the great machinery of society—and this was where the stallion’s mind always got the better of him. Ele was a rather ambitious fellow, and he was in constant need of new experiences and happenings in his life. He would not be able to bare a stagnant existence, even if he was surrounded by peers.

The sable drake’s brown orbs found their way up to the mares’. First, they rested on Solanine, then on Cashmere. With an even tone, Ele asked, “And what sort of opportunities present themselves in your two cultures? I don't mean to offend anyone, but I would rather abstain from being a bourgeois conformist.” Sure, it was a bit curt, but the stallion preferred to keep things to the point, and now that he had recovered from his initial shock, he was beginning to speak more naturally.

I watch as Solanine seems to take offense in something I didn't ever mean to hurt anyone. I was only saying that the Falls would never attack a neutral herd for no good reason. The Throat would have a reason, but not the Falls.

I speak again, for it seems to go in this order. My eyes cast to his feet, I do not make eye contact. The mare beside me seems to think that I am young and do not know things. Maybe that has been what she sees in me. What others see in me is what they see. Not me. They cannot change my viewpoint in my own world on myself.

"In the Falls...we have storytellers, earth medics, sleuths, and masons. I am a mason, and artisan, of the herd." And questing for the magic as well. -Then why don't you tell him that?!- She screams at me. My ears are already pinned to my head, like I had been jabbed by something.

Well, I had. It was her piercing voice. I did not like it when she busted through like that. It hurt the heck out of me and my head. I let my slate ears rise once again, chestnut eyes finding his once again. Casting down at once, I mutter back to the Girl in my head, "Solanine will not like it much..." it was muffled, but another could still probably make it out. I sighed at my stupid efforts.

And, he was probably going to choose the Basin anyway. Solanine, she was better at advertising herds than me. Obviously. More sharp mouthed with smart words slipping out every moment she got to speak. I wonder if she does not like me, in a way. I hope she is okay with me. Because she seems like a friend I would want to hang out with. A nice friend. One that will have my back.

So does this questioning boy here as well.

And I finally feel warm in a long time. As I think of all the words exchanged through the trio already, I smile because...we don't know each other. But the forest's will was for us to meet. I smile as I raise my had and take a big long look at both of them, chestnut eyes sinking into the deep pools of Solanine, and the muddy orbs of Ele.

The grey maiden seemed unsure of herself, which tried Ele’s patience, but what she said intrigued him. ‘Mason? Hmm . . . what an interesting option.’ The sable stallion thought about it for a long moment.

The brute certainly had a weakness for events and situations that were considered out-of-the-ordinary. Working as an artisan, learning to shape stone, might just be the occupation he sought. It would satisfy his lust for changing scenery; for his ceaseless lust for adventure. It was a dangerous and unpredictable job, and Elecampane wanted to dive in.

So, settling on his decision, he eyed the pearly-colored doe carefully. “Well, I believe the Hidden Falls presents a matter of intrigue I cannot turn down, much as I would someday like to visit the wonders of the Aurora Basin.” With a nod, the male raised his head proudly, and spoke firmly. “Cashmere, lead me to the Falls.”

So, unfortunately Solanine's character is going to be on hiatus for a while, so she won't be responding. You're welcome to do another post, or we can just end it here! I'm happy either way :) See ya back at the Falls!
