Megaera had to hold herself back. The mare was so eager to complete her task of getting the burning torch back to the Throat that she kept accelerating in her flight. Each time she did, she would catch a glimpse of the light as it flicked and started to shrink, suffocated by the wind she was creating and each time she forced herself to slow down.

The branch clenched in her teeth was a little over four feet long and stuck out further towards one end. That side was drenched in black and wreathed in flame, and this was her precious cargo. Sparked in the pit of Helovia’s Heart, the fire had been one of the Sun God’s demands and to Meg it seemed like it was such a small token in exchange for the magic that would help ferry the unicorns and equines of her herd to the safely of home. It meant more than Meg realized. The fire was not only a token but for her it had been a test. Since her plunge of two winters past, Meg had been afraid of the Heart, afraid of the fire that had almost swallowed her, but nearing them, almost entering them again had meant helping her family and she had not balked at the task. For her family, so would have perished in the fire, and the devil take anyone who would have challenged her on that score.

She touched down at the desert end of the land bridge, looking around for someone to pass the torch to. Eager as she had been to get back, she was eager to leave again, to make sure that little Spice and Alija made to journey home alright. Meg had left the pregnant mare to Hector’s watch, but had hoped Spice would have kept up with her. No sign.

Knowing she’d have to turn back, Meg dug a hasty hole in the soft ground. The oild on the aged wood should keep the branch burning but it still seemed wrong to just leave it to lie upon the gound. With a considerable effort, she managed to stick one end of the torch into the hole and have it standing upright. With a winged salute to fire and light, the warrior turned back to find her companions and left the bright flame at the entrance to Dragon’s Throat.

A lantern to guide them home.
