It had been such a long time since I’d let go and let the world spin me in her embrace. I wanted to dance with the cosmos and sing to the heavens. I wanted to burn with the earthen fires of my existence and color the skies with my ideas. I was done with thinking, done with debating, and done with everything that reminded me of life itself. I wanted to shed my skin and bones and simply be. I’d travelled too many miles to count and suffered ignorance in every form, but now I was ready to touch the intelligence of ingenuity and innocence. When would the world comply and send me what I’d been looking for? Gender was not an object when it came to truly seeing another’s soul… it was something I’d been seeking for too long and for too long I’d been denied satisfaction.

In an attempt to drown the restlessness that shook me from within, I sought out the ocean. It was a wide expanse of sand and water that served to calm the beating of my heart, but not the incessant racing of my thoughts. I pictured the stunning blood red mare I’d met some miles back and the way she smiled at me. She was a whimsical creature best suited for a family and doting partner… and at times I longed to be the one that turned her lips and caressed her cheek. At times I feared that age had made me a weak man, however, with nothing other than a vagabond lifestyle to offer, I was little more than a passing dream… a transient idea that couldn’t quite stick.

That’s not to say that I was looking for love or the like; it was more about the fact that I wanted someone to share these times with. I wanted someone with which to make memories with… a companion that would see me as ally and confidante. Was that love? I wasn’t sure nor did I care to indulge the question and yet… it was a notion that would not rid itself, despite many attempts to see it gone.

Even as trouble seemed to plague me in my descent down the shore, I was not blind to the beauty of such a spectacular view. The waters the rushed headlong across the beach reminded me of a village I’d visited when I was about three years old. It had been something of a merchant town filled with friendly faces and even friendlier women, but it hadn’t been what I was looking for… I needed more magic, more awe. That’s why Helovia had not only thrown me for a whirl but had also gripped me between her teeth and compelled me to stay, a permanent fixture unwilling to be uprooted from the splendor that was this amazing land.

Yet it came with a certain loneliness that had never touched my virgin heart before. I’d always been a man more amused by the generosity of many than by the ingenuity of just one. Somehow, this place had planted her seed down low, causing me to regret my choices for the first time in my life. What did life have in store for a perpetual ladies’ man, hell-bent on testing every savory delicacy known to mankind?

How many times would I have to battle with my desires before they consumed me? I’d often wondered as much… but then again, it was a pleasurable battle best meant for mongrels like myself.

"Tell Me Something Sweet To Get Me By"

The golden princess had never been to the beach before, but from what she had overheard from others, it was well worth the trip. After a few days of planning, Jahzara made her way from the World's Edge towards the Endless Blue, following the imaginary pony that she declared as her best friend. In her mind's eye, the fat purple pony waddled along in front of her until they could hear the sound of the ocean's waves. The ground began to fade into sand, decorated with sporadic seashells and beckoning the golden mare closer. When the sight of the waves became clear, the arabian cross stopped to admire the shoreline. "Wow, this is incredible!" The mare was vageuly aware that her hallucination was rushing towards water's edge, but it wasn't until she heard her voice that she truly realized that Lily was enticing her to play. "C'mon ya old ninny! Let's have some fun!"

When the chubby little pony teased her for turning another year older, Jahzara narrowed her eyes and flashed a playful smirk. "Oh yeah? I'll show you whose the old ninny!" With a playful leap the mare chased after her beloved figment, splashing head on into the water and slidding to spray the water over Lily. To her, she saw her best friend soaked. To the world, a mare splashing like a foal in the water by herself. At first, she completely unaware that there was even another being on the beach, she was so lost in her game of splash tag and her blind side was facing the stranger. It wasn't until she whipped around when Lily galloped as fast as her stubby legs allowed her in a circle to Jahzara's other side. Chasing her friend down the beach, Jahzara fianlly realized that they weren't actually alone.

Suddenly her nerves struck up, and she immediately slowed to a steady walk before coming to a halt. With her dial turned slightly, her blinded eye covered by her forelock and her healthy brown gaze studied the star-studded stallion, noting the unicorn horn. Jahzara had never seen him around the edge before, but she had herd that they Basin was full of unicorns. Was he one of their members? Was he one of the dangerous unicorns that were prejudiced against other species? Quietly, awkwardly, she stood in the shallows of the water, slowly sinking in the wet sand while the water licked her ankles.

Lily, on the other hand, had no problem approaching the stallion with a slacked jaw. Barely coming up to his knees, the figment peered up at the brute with amazed eyes, in complete awe over his coat. 'Hey Jay, check it out! It's like he was made from the night! DUDE come look at this!' The pony circled around the stallion while Jahzara cleared her throat, trying to get her friend to return to her side.

How many times had I heard the constant rushing of the waves against the shore? Surely one would think it to be a monotonous sound, but certainly not I. Every new place harbored strange and exciting wonders, wares, and delicacies- yet the ocean was always the same. However, her song was always changing and always beautiful. That was the one thing I’d promised myself I’d find… in every land, in every city. Helovia had proffered many unusual delights, but her sea was quite old and distinctly wise… and its song was unlike anything I’d heard before. It told of tragedy and war and life, but there was something deeper, something too faint to hear amongst the low notes… Perhaps it was sadness masked by strength, though I couldn’t be certain. I ducked my head toward the rolling waters and closed my eyes in order to read the sea’s ancient tales but I was interrupted in doing so.

The song is suddenly dissonant and irksome, as if someone has changed the strings upon which it is played. I throw my head back at the sound and when I glare angrily down the beach, I find the culprit. Just around the soft curve of the shore, a young palomino mare works her way in and out of the water in frenzy. Although I can’t quite put my finger on it, I can definitely tell that she appears to be engaged… but by what, I still don’t know.

Upon stepping away from the water’s grasp, I steered my course toward the mare and her haphazard thrashing. However, when her sights were directed back towards me, she paused as if she’d been caught stealing a damn cookie from the cookie jar. It didn’t keep me from approaching, but I did have to smile slightly at her antics. “You’re botching the ocean’s rhythm,” I stated coolly, as if she would understand my own momentary insanity.

The young girl couldn’t be any more than two or three years old from the looks of her, but I didn’t think it appropriate to ask and instead swallowed the notion. “What’s your name?” I asked casually after falling into step alongside her. I’d always been a fairly confident man and had no troubles saying and doing what I liked, even if it made others mildly uneasy. That’s not to say this young lass was off-put by my presence, but at times I liked to hope so. After all, I be an intimidating creature… if only because of my forthright demeanor. I’d grown into my skin a long time ago and learned that should one desire respect, one had to give them a reason for respect. Sometimes it worked out and other times it didn’t, but that was the name of the game.

Not everyone was meant to enjoy one another… though I blissfully enjoyed most everyone.
