Heavy brass doors swung open on well-oiled hinges, without a sound. Blinding light burst into the heavy darkness and he turned away, blinking tearing eyes against the pure golden glow that made his own churning, struggling flames dim and darken even further, so bright was it. He hesitated then, lingered on trembling legs on the threshold of a world he had never seen before. Crimson fire flickered and sent off a shower of sparks across the polished marble floors as he drew a deep breath, inhaling the outside breeze. Damp, cold, rich with scents he couldn't describe. It was so different from the dusty darkness he had grown up in, where smoke of fragrant incense and hidden hearths made the air hot and stagnant, low in oxygen and heavy to breathe. Here, now, for the first time the boy felt the smoldering embers of his essence rekindle. He threw a final glance at the silver-maned stallion that lingered by the gate, as if seeking permission, and with the blessing of an encouraging nod Cathun stepped forth into the light, his flames erupting in a road of untamed delight.

The heat of Tallsun faded as two horses made their way south across the billowing landscapes of Helovia. While the days remained warm and bright with abundant sunlight showering down upon their backs, the nights were growing steadily colder with each passing day. Cool winds ruffled gently through the billowing locks of Cathun's hair where he trotted side by side with his newfound not-quite-but-almost sister. His spirits remained high as they took turns interrogating the other about themselves, the past and their plans for the far distant future. Most intriguing was, however, the things Amaris revealed about Helovia itself, and as she spoke a pair of red-hot eyes trained on her, attentive and as intense as a blazing inferno devouring everything it came across.

"So to sum it up, there are in reality four lands here, a god that rule each and hand out magic and gifts like treats to keep the people content? Sounds awfully nice and chummy." Although he tried the colt was unable to hide the frown that gently creased the lines of eyes and nose, discontent pooling to the surface for no clear reason. "Which one of them reigns over this Dragon's Throat?"

They should be nearly there now. If he raised his neck and gazed past the low twisting trees and crawling shrubs Cathun could see a shimmering blue line stretch out along the horizon, the faded green of vast plains fading into red rock, then into ocean only to eventually rise again in dunes of red sand, shimmering under the heat of the sun.

He had mixed feelings about the place even before seeing it.

Nothing in this new land called out to him as home yet, and he had seen locations that appeared far more inviting on the journey from the green forest Amaris had called The Threshold. The golden girl might look forward to their arrival, and Cat supposed he did too after such a long journey, but... he still felt odd. That tingling, shivery sensation from the forest still lingered over him, like a slightly damp blanket filled to the brim with static electricity, hot and stifling and impossible to shrug off. It irked him, like an itch in a spot far out of reach. The sensation even seemed to affect his dreams at night. Worried dreams, restless sleep, old memories that surfaced - it was the latter that disturbed him most, lingering at the back of his mind as though to remind him of everything he had attained to come this far - and all the things he had lost.

"I can see the ocean. Looks like we're almost there."

He left the subject of her magic and its implications rest, though whether he agreed with her or not was unclear. It didn't truly matter, she supposed, for she knew her magic, knew how it worked (mostly), knew that it was a connection to some other place where souls go once their bodies have expired. It was a comfort, a security blanket she held close to her heart, ever since her birth, negating the period of time that the Gods had ventured from the lands and taken their magic with them. She remembered feeling empty, lost without her guides. And she had never been able to recall Daryth.. The devious black who, before that time, had been almost a constant companion. The black who resided upon her withers now was not him, this one was a foreign and strange one, a wild one who spoke a language Amaris knew through her mother but did not speak often, because it was not the native tongue of Helovia.

He was all gallantry and pleasantness, and the girl could not help a school-girl's blush from filling her expression, though it was only momentary, as she recovered with a graceful nod, and moved smoothly into a walk. So, he knew about her and her family - the girl felt that strange, undefinable sensation again, only it was coloured less with betrayal and more with a warmth now. That Lace would talk of her so fondly.. She felt guilty for the feelings she had before, the knee-jerk reaction of doubt and fear. It was easy now, to welcome this new brother into her family, to feel at ease with him - at least, to begin to. With each step they took together, she became more fluid in her motions, more natural, instead of the awkward hybrid not-quite-a-mare being she felt like most of the time.

They spoke of a great many things, Amaris clarifying where she could on facts about the land. "Not exactly. The gods are generous, but one must prove themselves worthy of their gifts." Amaris herself had always been overlooked whenever she sought out the company of a God, though she had only really ventured towards them out of curiosity. Her gift of summoning spirits was something she had been born with, blessed with - did she truly need anything else? "The God of the Sun watches over the Throat." She answered quietly, unsure of what to make of the tone behind his questioning. "Gaucho the Wildfire leads us.. He was recently blessed by our Lord to become ascended." Though she didn't understand the implications of the word entirely, she knew it was something grand, something that put one on a similar shelf as the Gods themselves.

The sounds and smells of the ocean neared, and Amaris smiled at the young brute's words. "Come on," she spoke excitedly, allowing the energy to fill her up, reaching out with her scaled muzzle to nudge him into motion. They were trotting, and then cantering, and as they approached the great expanse of water that separated the Throat from the rest of Helovia, Amaris spread her wings. The key that was entwined with her mane activated itself with the magic blessed to them, and the bridge came to life, a blaze of glorious fire and light stretching its way across the crashing waves below. As the girl descended from her short flight, to land upon the bridge, she turned to look at Cathun, keen to see if she could illicit one of his dramatic reactions. A smile curved her lips, before she turned again and travelled to her home - their home, if he would have it.

The frown lingered on his brow for some time, a mixture of worry, anger and dislike that was hard to decipher. Cathun was not fond of gods. They had a way of interfering with mortal lives in ways that spread sorrow and ruin more often than peace or prosperity. Powerful and selfish, in his experience the divine treated their mortals like pawns in their games, tossing away anyone that had played out their role. How could it be any different here? It was just another land filled with chess pieces, another set of immortals with too much time on their hands. That he would have to grovel at the feet of one in order to live in peace and quiet was unfortunate. Oh, Cathun could do it, and would whenever it was necessary, but nothing would make him feel any true reverence towards a soul no matter how elevated, if they believed themselves higher and more worthy than him. Fear was not love, respect was not submission - and he had not obtained freedom just to bind himself in new shackles.

The one he already carried around the neck was heavy enough.

Still. It was a matter that could be dealt with later, and today the Firebrand had more immediate concerns to occupy himself with. Like keeping up with Amaris. Her smile was radiant as she turned to him and urged him to follow, and with a last snort the young stallion shrugged off the gloomy thoughts in favor for a wide smirk of his own. Solid black hooves picked up the pace from walk to trot and into a swift lope. Each stride was fast and wide-spanning thanks to the long legs. Soon he was flashing across the plains in blinding speed, having no trouble keeping up with the dragoness even when she cheated and used her wings.

Ah, how he loved to run! The wind in his hair, the pulse in pricked ears, to gulp down breath after sweet breath of air; nothing could be better than this. Cathun resented the thought of having to slow down, loathed the imminent end of the mainland that inevitably came creeping up. Delivering the ocean before his feet the horizon faded away into a vague blue line in the distance, interrupted only by the island on the other side of the strait. He would have to stop, there was no way he would be able to swim that distance - at least not after spending so much time pushing himself to the limit, after days and nights of travel with only the bare necessity of food and rest.

Blazing eyes glanced up towards his guide to see where she would choose to land, but to his great surprise Amaris wasn't slowing down at all.

"Hey, wait up!" he called, breathless as he kept running, "I don't have..."

Wings.

But suddenly, without any warning and for seemingly no reason, Cathun did grow wings. Blazing, sweeping feathers of blazing flame erupted from his sides and raised him from the ground. He tried to stop, scraped his legs desperately along the ground to slow the pace, halt, anything before the edge of the world fell away and threw him into the sea. Fear gripped him, horror struck him as his effort proved futile, and with a ragged gasp he felt his hooves part from the ground. He snapped the eyes shut, held his breath, waited, waited for the fall, the sinking feeling in the gut, the crash as fragile flesh, so feeble and mortal, met with the water far below.

He waited, but nothing happened. Nothing, except a surge of wind that caressed his sweaty skin with cool hands, the crackle and hum of the fire wings, and a strained, low-pitched hum that he couldn't place, coming from a source nearby.

Daring to crack an eye open, Cathun looked up just in time to experience the last stretch of the flight before he was unceremoniously dropped onto the red sand on the other shore. Only cat-like reflexes enabled him to catch himself and land on the feet instead of tumbling headfirst to the ground, the wings disappeared and left him feeling strangely... empty.

It was not the entrance he would have liked to make. Like a newborn foal he stood with widespread legs, trembling and weak at the knees. The hair was a mess, mane and tail alike rendered a curly mop of ash and charcoal by the wind, and for some reason one of the beads in his necklace was flickering, the glow fading and returning repeatedly in a sort of frenzy. Swallowing thickly he tried to regain some form of composure, but between the shock of sprouting wings and worry about the seal, all he could manage a wide-eyed, questioning look at Amaris. Was she doing this? Had she been responsible for everything - the wings, the bead, his humiliation?

"You... could have given me a heads up" he finally said weakly, as soon as he'd found his tongue again and hauled it back out of the throat. There was a faint tone of accusation in his voice, a hint of hurt to his eyes as he looked away. Cathun sulked while he nudged and prodded the necklace, too busy nursing wounded feelings to hide the concern that radiated from him over the odd behavior of the seal - his sole shield and protection, so very fragile.

Laughter bubbled up from her throat as the girl heard the steed's voice be cut off by the sheer surprise of it all. It wasn't mocking laughter, but rather soft and lilting, more like a harmonic song to accompany them while they flew, side by side. The dark smudge of a dragon joined them, though he knew now to maintain a respectful distance from the grullo, so as not to upset the golden queen he was temporarily bonded to. She sung, a harmony that ranged from deep humming through to seraphic tones, voicing the joy she felt at simply flying, and being able to share it with a friend. Had she thought about it too long, she might have been surprised at just how fast the friendship had blossomed. Usually so guarded, so stiff and formal, she found herself more at ease with every moment that passed, so much so that she was entirely surprised to find him sulking by the time they reached the other side.

It was difficult for her to wrap her head around just how foreign and unusual Helovia was for those not raised to accept such things as magic as normal. He had been so pleasant before, but now she saw the wear and tear of travel, fatigue and an overabundance of new things to absorb and learn and come to grips with… She tried to look back on her first day in her father's realm, when she met the dragoness that was her grandmother - the silver's very eye had been the size of her head, and her breath as it washed over Amaris had singed the hairs within her nostrils. She remembered feeling insignificant, tiny, completely and utterly hopeless in the face of something so grand and strong. She remembered feeling how Cathun looked at this moment, like a new born, thrust wobbling and wet into this world, not knowing how to make one's own legs stand up to one's own weight - not knowing if they even could.

Apologetically she reached out to him, offering a gentle rub of her muzzle against his sweaty and worried brow, lipping at his over-long forelock, blowing a gentle, breezy breath upon him. "Sorry," she said softly. "I thought you might've enjoyed it." How many mistakes did the girl have to make before she would begin to make the right decisions, choices, and assumptions about things? It was all a part of growing up, she supposed, but still, it was frustrating to always be apologising, to never being able to just get things right. A small frown creased her brow as she felt disappointed and angry in herself. Suddenly, she wondered whether Cathun would rather find himself another guide, one who was less incompetent than her. A shaky sigh left her lips as she pulled back from him, as the girl tried to ignore the genuine upset she felt at letting her new brother down.

"Cathun?" she asked, her soft voice somewhat flatter than its usual chiming, lyrical tones. "I can go find someone.. else, to show you around and everything. Tandavi shouldn't be far.." her words tricked away into silence, her tiara descending from its lofty perch to a level somewhere around her knees. The black dragon sung sadly for her, descending down to land once more upon her withers, crooning softly to try and lift the girl's spirits once more. What had come over her? Never before had she allowed her insecurities to swallow her up, but somehow, the shame and sorrow she felt from eliciting just that reaction from Cathun had made them all the more raw and volatile, prone to break her down into nothing more than a sad little girl.

Swallowing her guilt, she looked away, into the lands that was her home, lands she hoped so share with him, her new brother, though right now she felt it was just as likely for Cathun to ask to leave immediately as it was for him to want to stay another moment in her presence. When had things gone so wrong?

Soft lips brush over his forehead, tease the soft silk of a frosted forelock in pleading, apologetic prods. His first reaction is to flinch and pull away, dread for her safety washing away any trace of sullenness. Cathun is not one to hold grudges. His temper flashes like lightning, like a bright red spark in the night; with the fury of a storm it flares up, but once it has passed there are no traces left but a slight tension in the air, the memory of blinding light engraved on the eyes as you close them. He wasn't even really angry - just tired, overwhelmed, worried. Sparks fly from his mane and old habit make him jerk the head back so she won't get burned, so that his fire won't harm that which has become precious to him already. Perhaps the motion will cause a different kind of hurt - but it is better than searing skin and starting fires, better to loose a friend and soul sister than steal her very life.

He does not know that his fire is no longer capable of harming. Cathun doesn't trust the magic of this new realm, doesn't know its origin or nature. To him, magic and unnatural events are an evil, a plague conjured to punish and curse. Benevolent magic was unheard of in his homeland, and power without a price did not exist.

His attention is elsewhere when Amaris offers to fetch someone else, and while he does listen the suggestion seem both strange and unnecessary to him. The colt doesn't even objecting but simply snort and throw her a sideways glance beneath sloping ears. "If that's what you want..." Are you tired of me already? I thought we had become friends...

"More importantly, 'Rii, is this normal? Does your magic always affect artifacts like this?" He jerked the chin towards the bead, frowning as he studied the center bead. The flickering was gradually slowing down but while the glow appeared steadier it was less bright than before, less vibrant. The energy radiating from the tear-drop felt different too, but it was hard to pinpoint in what way.

Teeth worried at the lip when the colt raised his gaze and sought out the dragon filly's, eyes aglow with fear at the thought that the seal might break. One had failed already, and if the second was weakening already...

"This wasn't supposed to happen" he whispered, distraught. "Coming here was supposed to fix it, not break it even more. Could... could he have been wrong?"

The thought was uncomfortable - Lace had always been right so far - but it kept nagging him and without being fully aware of it the tall youth sidled closer to Amaris, as though being near her might make his troubles go away.

He pulled away from her, the warmth of his inner fire dissipating in the distance he drew, and with it, any lingering hope the girl had for being able to fulfil his needs. They were siblings, in a sense, they had no choice but to cherish each other, and that made the distance he forced all the more unbearable to carry. Tears threatened to overflow, but she blinked and swallowed them back, sure that he would be sending her away in no time. But the words he spoke, or rather, the tone behind them, prompted her to stay, to linger and support, however useless she so obviously was.

Then he called her Rii, and her heart opened up again, her hooves closed the distance once more, her nose reaching out so that she could better view the necklace he was indicating. Though she didn't know it, wasn't fully aware of it, she also simply longed to be nearer to him, and she used the distraction of the strange charms to achieve this closeness.

"They look similar to an amulet, an object that, depending on which God blessed it, reacts differently to magic." A small frown creased the gentle contours of her visage, as she considered the strange artefact. There was certainly something about it - Cathun had described it as a seal of some sort. The girl blinked, taking in the appearance of the colt as a whole once more, looking at the way his mane and tail shed embers, the way his eyes looked like the depths of the volcanic lava that swelled at the Heart Caves. If he had an element to label him, it would be fire, she was sure, though she was as yet unaware of the full extent of his condition.

"Lace wouldn't be wrong about this." Amaris said, her voice different somehow, more mature, more confident. The girl had taken on the pose of a queen once more, a creature who was less equine and more draconic, almost savage in her surety. It was a stark contrast to the shy, hopeless girl moments before. The dark smudge of the dragon that accompanied her cooed softly as he twirled on the breeze above them, having left his perch atop the girl's withers in the moments that she found her inner queen once more.

"We will fix it, Cathun." Forgetting about the prospect of ever leaving him, the young golden dragon reached her long neck over the narrow width of his, purring deeply within her chest as she did so. It was a tight embrace, one he would have to work hard to escape - she felt the heat generated by whatever magic it was that possessed him, but she was scaled with dragon's scales, an armour naturally holding a high resistance to flame and heat - if anything, she found the sensation pleasant. "It's just going to take some time and work, from all of us. But we'll figure it out." Somehow.

She leaned in close to inspect his necklace and Cathun had to suppress an urge to retreat again. Close contact with others was foreign still, a thing he longed for yet feared. The consequences whenever he had tried had always been horrendous, and after a while he had stopped trying completely. It was Lace that had started to open his heart again - glistening, strong, seemingly immortal in the eyes of the colt as raging flames had been unable to keep up with the stallion's regenerative body. How it must have hurt! Yet father had only smiled gently, like Mother once had done, and Cathun had found it impossible to keep himself cold to the nostalgic kindness.

It was just as hard to keep the distance from Amaris now. Her scent surrounded him and drowned out all else, he felt dizzy as he stared down at her with emotions of unease, reluctance, relief raging within. He thought he saw something glisten in her eyes before she blinked and looked up, making him hastily turn is gaze elsewhere with cheeks burning in embarrassment. Had she been holding back tears? Why? Was it something he said or did? But the dragon girl stayed with him, spoke encouraging words even and suddenly looking as confident and strong as Fajira after she'd caught a rabbit - why were girls so complicated?

"Y-yeah, of course. You're right, I'll.... uh?"

Golden scales suddenly wrapped around his neck in a tight embrace and the colt froze in shock. Wide eyes glanced down in surprise, brain working hard to understand what was going through her mind. But for all that he tried Cathun couldn't figure out what was so - wait, was she comforting him?

Ah. He really must have been sounding pathetic. How lame, how incredibly graceless of him, to make a girl worry like this - someone he had only recently met, a stranger in anything but name. A small, wry smile twisted his mouth into a bitter grimace. Slowly, gradually he relaxed under her hug and let out the air that filled his lungs, emptying them completely before he drew a new breath, deep and fresh increasingly determined. Once the feeling spread enough through him to steady the knees Cathun gave the silky, caramel hair a quick (rather awkward) brush with the nose and pulled away again.

"Yeah, of course" he said, voice filled with new confidence. "But are you sure you want to get involved? It might turn out to be dangerous, it might not even be possible in the end..." He would hate to cause her pain after being this kind to him. The storm-colored colt had lived with the knowledge of what fate might have in store for him all his life and while he was striving to change it a part of him was resigned to the possibility that it might not be possible. Yet Amaris... she didn't know the true meaning behind the seal that bound him, had no idea what could happen to anyone around him if it finally broke. If he had a choice Cathun would have handled the matter on his own, involving no one. But he was in no position to act proud. So at the very least, he would give anyone involved the option of remaining ignorant and he would spare her the knowledge of what was going on as long as possible.

Flaming orbs regarded her quietly for a moment, then he sighed and turned his attention to the surrounding landscape.

What he saw was red. Red sand, blue sky, a glittering ocean that surrounded them on all sides and in the distance a giant tree that rose up towards the heavens, more massive and imposing than any tree he had ever seen.

"So this is Dragon's Throat. Fitting name... but is it really possible to live here? There's nothing but sand anywhere." A dark hoof pawed at the shifting grains to demonstrate his point, and as he returned the eyes to Amaris the ears pricked attentively, wordlessly asking her to explain.

Between the barren ground and the hot sun it didn't exactly look inviting... but Cathun had a feeling his mission to mend the seal would take quite a while, and in the meantime he would have to stay somewhere. "Say, Rii, do you think I'll be able to stay here for a while? I can work, so..."

Purrs crooned deep within her chest, and it is the relief to feel him give under her embrace that fuels the cherished hold's longevity. When he pulled away, it was politely, at a time where Amaris' own heart did not feel saddened by the distance - she even felt a bit foolish for needing him to tug at her locks to tell her so. With a sheepish smile touching her lips for a moment, she lifted her nape off his, stretching herself out again, as if the embrace had cramped muscles she rarely used. At his words, she scoffed, a gentle huff of breath snorting its way through her nostrils as she bumped her scaled nose against his cheek.

"I am a dragon. Danger seems attracted to me, and I've survived this long," she replied playfully, her sweet tones attempting to make light of the situation - she heard and felt the foreboding of his tones, the fear of what might happen should they fail in their task of mending this seal - could she lose the brother she only just discover she had?

No, she decided, speaking to the bonded who grasped the concept of her thoughts more than the actual words themselves, due to his foreignness. I'll make sure whatever needs to be done is done, no matter what. With the idea firmly planted in her head, the girl allowed the stubbornness of the dragon within her to take hold; Cathun was like a new jewel added to a dragon's den, prized for its rarity and loved for its uniqueness. Though she of course saw him as more than a simple rare jewel - he was a brother, a comrade, a kindred spirit who, whether he liked it or not, was officially stuck with her by his side.

"Oh!" she laughed gently at his description of the Throat, her barren wasteland of a home. At least, the entrance appeared that way - from the skies, even crossing the bridge, if one had their eyes open, they might have seen the great lake that filled the basin within, the lush oasis of grasses and shade that decorated the water's edges. "But you must stay, of course! You can do whatever you want - learn to fight and defend, learn to craft and create, look to the Gods for wisdom and insight -" (somehow she doubted he would choose the path of the Gods) "- you are welcome to call the Throat home, with me. And Tandavi." The girl paused, and then looked about, as if looking for something she might have dropped earlier. Just where was her cousin-sister?

With a mental shrug, silently she decided she would find Tavi later tonight, to tell her of all the wonderful things that had happened (they had a brother!) the girl gestured with her tiara and began to walk off. "Come along, when we reach that rise you'll see the oasis where most of the herd sleeps and eats, then it's just a short walk to the lake, where we can wash off our traveller's coats."

He didn't object to her confident declaration. If the colt felt anything but gratitude and vague amusement upon seeing Amaris' optimistic grin it didn't show through, and as he made to follow her deeper into the Throat he appeared to drop the subject entirely. Sightseeing overtook his attention, and while he looked forward to that promised bath and a chance to rest, Cathun thoroughly enjoyed himself as he was guided towards the Oasis. While barren and dry beneath a relentless sun, there was beauty in the arid landscape, and as he loved the shimmering heat that rose from the shifting sand and red rocks he rather quickly decided that he would like it there.

At least, once he got used to walking in the sand. The first few meters were fine, but soon enough the constant shifting, slipping and digging to find traction for his hooves was beginning to take its toll. His legs burned with fatigue, lungs straining for air all while he tried not to look too desperately thirsty as a scent of water - fresh, not salty - came wafting on a gentle breeze. Until he got used to it, just walking from one place to another was going to be hell.

Well. No matter. At least he would get stronger - Amaris had piqued his interest as she rushed through the ranks, and while he had yet to actually accept the invitation to stay his mind was already conjuring up vivid imagery of himself leading a charge against a faceless enemy, banners flying and glistening armor flashing in the light of the sun...

"Say, Rii, what's that big tree over there?" he asked eventually, nudging the head towards a huge arboreal structure with awe in the eyes. They were drawing closer and his eyes grew wider and wider the nearer the trunk they went. "It's enormous, I have never seen such a big one before! And that glow in the sky over there, what's that?" Not waiting for a reply to the first query he looked off in the distance where a soft glow rivaled the sun in brightness, pale now but surely blazing and magnificent once darkness fell.
