d'Artagnan the Nightshade

The road to the Basin was fairly easy. Orangemoon had brought a few cold spells with it and the terrain in the mountains was slowly getting a little harder, but it was nothing too pressing for the glass horned Mender who navigated it like a well travelled hiker. He did, now and then, check on his mountaineering partner in case he was having problems. Not that the shade could do much about it if he was, though the thought was amusing and he kind of hoped one day someone would accidentally, y'know, fall down the mountain. Just for the sake of comedy. It would lighten up the journey considerably. To pass the time, the Doctor tried to broach a tentative conversation as he still gingerly looked at the sugar coated stallion who couldn't really be taken seriously. "Look at him" he moaned to Aramis as they trod up past the Frozen Arch and half considered throwing himself down the mountain. "He smells nice, the females will like him" the hellion nonchalantly shrugged in reply and the shade gave him a pointed look of disgust. When it came to mares and there odd ways, d'Artagnan was quite lost. He was almost certain Kou had known that very well. "Oh good, we brought back a stud" it was Aramis' turn to dish out the pointed looks now as he eyed the Doctor with surprise "you can't talk" he pointed out. d'Artagnan ignored him.

"Have you any talents? Interests? We have a few specialised ranks you can choose from" he asked Johnny with his rough voice, half wishing to the skies above that he wouldn't say 'healing'. Good God what would he do with him? Although, saying that, the shade was quite interested to know how his substances would react to his, well, his special body.

He travelled on, crossing the Steppe only slightly before turning down the entrance to the Basin and on to the two sentinels. Ostentatious things, though he appreciated their help. The path twisted further down until finally it opened up onto the permafrost ground and most of the Basin laid out before him. The Doctor gave a long, thankful sigh as he relished being back home. The travelling was okay, but he liked familiar comforts. Aramis bounded off with a brief report that contained only one word 'hungry', the shade watched him move away before turning to see if his travelling partner was still with him. "Welcome to the Basin" he gruffly announced.

Once we got away from the fire-mare (oh man I couldn’t be happier she was starting to freak me out) the happier I got and when I get happy, I talk. Oh we could have been climbing the trickiest mountain you could ever think of and I’d find a way to climb that thing. I mean, if I didn’t climb it, I would lose my talking-buddy, right? That was motive enough! So I trudge right along, not complaining once, because what was there to complain about? The farther north we travelled, the cooler the air got, and that was just perfect. I could feel my skin getting all refreshed

“Talents?” Did my new friend have any idea what a huge topic he had just brought up? “Why where do I begin?! I’m great at talking, a pretty good listener too. I um… I tell wicked stories. Man like you wouldn’t believe! Great jokes too, we can gather all your buddies around and be a little stand-up duo. I bet you tell great jokes, doesn’t he Aramis?” Oh look I just made one right there! I’m still laughing about it, which is fortunate for everyone because my laugh is a delight. It gets all warbly and then there’s this hacking moment where I can’t breathe and oh man, you should hear it. It’s really a shame that you can’t.

Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, me. And my talents. Some of these talents aren’t you know, appropriate. I don’t know how old Aramis is after all so I have to keep it ‘for all ages’. “I’ve been told that nibbling on one of my tail hairs can cheer people up so you know, if you’re ever feeling sad just help yourself.”

I try to stick as close to d’Artagnan without tripping him up when we pass by the giant metal horses that are standing guard at the entrance, or what I can assume is the entrance because a couple moments later I’m being welcomed and it felt pretty good. First though, manners: “See you, Aramis!” I called after the retreating dog-thing. I’m going to miss him!

“Well thank you for the warm welcome, d’Artagnan. Your home is beautiful! So, what sort of specialised ranks are you talking about?” I ask, because I’m genuinely curious. I don’t really know how the whole herd thing works here in Helovia, you know, or… anywhere. Last time I had a home I basically spent my days lying in a patch of clover eating whatever I could without moving my body. Pretty sweet gig if you ask me. But I got the feeling that there wasn’t a rank for doing that in the Basin.

d'Artagnan the Nightshade

First of all, he was a short arse. Secondly, he needed a mute button.

For a long time d’Artagnan cursed his stupidity at even trying to start a conversation with the idiot. To put it simply, it was like throwing a pebble and starting a landslide. Talents! Oh this one had lots of talents! Luckily and perhaps the only positive the shade managed to find was that he never really mentioned healing or helping. Gods! If he had said poisoning he might have choked and died. Still, his answer seemed to fit well with his exuberant personality. Talking, listening, stories… Jokes as well, apparently. He’d make a decent disciple; maybe he should dump him at the door of that weird God botherer, Zikar Sin. The Time God would love him. That or they’d all be banished from the Aurora Basin. He even laughs like he’s choking on something too. Aramis looks witheringly at the sugar-coated motor mouth when he mentions his name and quickly looks away, staring very intently at the horizon. "There are many better at telling jokes than me, you should scout around the Basin" the Nightshade lied through his teeth, he had no idea if there were any comedians hanging around.

His next comment made the shade’s skin crawl and his lips set into a grim line, looking everywhere but at Johnny. "Fascinating" he mumbled in reply, not wanting sample his tail anytime soon, no matter how jovial it made him. The Doctor noticed that Aramis did not turn at the bizarre send off he was given, though he did bark rather deeply and his canine voice touched the mental bond good luck with that one. The Mender began to grumble incoherently under his breath, wishing he had claws and teeth and a stomach for meat so hunting could be his excuse too. Alas, the Nightshade was stuck with Mr Peppermint Swirl. He also noticed the way he seemed to drift closer to him as they passed the sentinels and d'Artagnan had gingerly begun to side step away into his own space, not really wanting his sugary body rub onto his. He might get some weird looks later if it did.

Eventually, when they arrived at the Basin, he turned his attention back to business. d’Artagnan thought about ranks and how best to explain them. It wasn’t really too complicated "we have various roles. For example, I am a Time Mender and I head the healers along with Lena. Other tasks include spying, crafting, fighting and more religious roles involving the patron of this land, the God of Time." He began, feeling like an old record as he rattled it off from memory. "You said you like telling stories, maybe you could be a Scholar and learn new stories about the land you’re in. You can then retell them to the herd or to the young foals who live here" he shrugged, it was a suggestion and the shade’s first thought when thinking of the skills he offered.

He could be anything, the Doctor didn't really care, well, anything but healing.

“Healing! How interesting. Why do you need to be healed? Are injuries a common occurrence in Helovia? Or sickness? And how do you heal time? Are there bandages for that?” Like how great would that be, I find myself in a place with a pretty great guy and then I find out that they need doctors because they all get sick all the time? I’m not about that. I’ve never been sick or injured before and I honestly don’t want to test out how that works because does sugar even heal? Are there sweetness fevers? I can think of several fabulous pick-up-lines involving those two subjects (sweet and fevers) but practical applications haven’t really been my area of expertise. I’ve always been the picture of health!

I mean if you ignore the slight pudge around the middle which I most certainly do not ignore. I ain’t ashamed of that extra layer, especially somewhere up north like this place! Although, I wouldn’t mind a little bit thinner of an insulating layer because then I could use being cold as an excuse to snuggle right up to tall, handsome near-strangers and the leagues of beautiful women and men that someone told me lived here in the Basin.

Wait, no one told me that? Well, I’m sure I’ll find out eventually. Even that Aurelia girl was pretty cute if she wasn’t so crazy, you know? I’m totally okay with the situation where Helovia has lots of beautiful specimens but you get sick a lot. Like, if the doctor looks like d’Artagnan? Yeah, give me all your germs please.

Oh man there were other things that he said too I guess I kind of got sidetracked, huh? Although I really want to ask why d’Artagnan is a Time Mender. Is time broken here? Do they make bandages for that? He’s honestly raising more questions than he is answering and the poor fellow just can’t keep up with this magnificent brain of mine. My legs usually can’t either, I’m not very good at walking-and-talking.

He’s being pretty helpful, regardless - what with giving me an idea for a job and all. I mean, I don’t really want a job it’s all a little much - I only just showed up after all. But whatever, I can work. Or tell stories. I mean talking really isn’t work, right? I’m doing it right now! I blink my beautiful green eyes at him and give him a big ol’ smile when he mentions collecting stories and telling them to the herd and the kiddos. “Stories! I like stories. And foals. I could do that! Who would I talk to about becoming a scholar?”

d'Artagnan the Nightshade

He balked away from the stallion’s response.

"No, no, no, no. Not healing. It’s really not that interesting" he thought to himself.

The Doctor could feel his patience starting to wear thin and his short temper began to articulate snide responses in the back of his mind. Did they not have healers where he came from? Was there really a place on earth that was so at peace it didn’t need the help of a healer, not even from nature herself?! "Injuries and sickness can occur… I suppose, even loss of life. Don’t look for peace here and try to keep a good health" he shrugged, not really being one to beat around the bush. Besides… It might scare him off. "Not everything is sugar and sweet" the Doctor was probably looking for the phrase sugar and spice.

This red-maned idiot even asked about the procedure, as if he had bandages, just lying around with their magical healing properties waiting to be lovingly stuck to a blood spurting wound. Wrapping such things sounded terribly tedious and boring, honestly, d’Artagnan thought it was not worth the effort. It was much easier and much more interesting to just sever said area from body. Most likely, it was probably these kinds of thoughts that kept others away from him, preferring Lena’s gentle touch to his ruthless manner. Oh that and the fact that he might mistake a poison for a remedy, that would be quite unfortunate, if not perfectly fascinating. "I reverse time using magic and, uh, erase it" he wasn’t going to win any awards as a wordsmith, it was the magic he knew how to wield, how to explain it however was a different matter.

A smile appears again and the shade grimaces in return. How long had he been practicing that kind of sickly gesture that sat so disgustingly on his lips? The Mender coughs and looks away, deciding to reply without looking at his idiotic face. "Zikar-Sin is the herd’s Haruspex and our link to the Time God-" he paused, happily giving the stallion away to another second tier official, at least it wasn’t healing. "Johnny… Scholar of the Aurora Basin. If that is what you choose then you should report to Zikar-Sin at some point, at least to get acquainted."

With that, the shade turned longingly towards where his cave was situated as a last question fell from his lips as more of a hopeful ending "can I answer anything else?"
