You are walking along the soft sands of the beach. The ocean rolls to your right, a dull roar in your ears. You have four choices. Turn left, inland. Go forward, south. Turn right into the ocean. Or go back, north.

I am waiting for you...

Slowly drifting, drifting away, wave after wave

She's on the beach again. She has come more and more often, or at least when she can. There's something building inside of her, growing with each experience that pounds another dent into the mold of her being. It was easier when she was younger, to let go, to forget. Wisdom was sticky though, and it held onto things, keeping them. It wasn't always for forever, but long enough to change her. Sometimes it was for the better, maybe always, but it didn't often feel that way.

It was only here, next to the ocean, that she could drown out everything else with its tireless roar. Its beauty captivated her, its flexibility inspired her, and its strength reminded her. The ocean moved on, tireless, endless, weightless... like a battery she was charged by it, life and vigor renewed with every breaking wave.

Even so, Ampere was troubled. Every name she wore was a weight she carried; it was a wonder she could even fly still. No matter how often she walked this shore line, she couldn't quite shake the sensation of being bound up. Maybe it had to do with her recent abstinence from stallions. Unbidden her thoughts cruelly whispered Gaucho, stabbing her own heart. "Not that," she thought sternly, pushing him away. So was it all her titles, all her responsibilities? The herd had laden her with many tasks, none like she'd had when she roamed wild and free. Another hole in her heart, but she shook her head irritably, certain that her family had lifted her higher than she had ever been alone. So then not her son either? He was the first child she'd stayed to care for, perhaps he was draining too much of her, literal or otherwise. Ampere planted her feet, halting so abruptly her tail spilled in-between her legs. "Never," she breathed.

Yet the feelings did not leave.

Turning her head towards the sea, Ampere watched it for a moment, stationary and silent with uncertainty. The day was warmer than usual for Orangemoon, and the breeze was calmer than normal for the marine land. Her lips set into a thin line. "I need you," she murmured. "Wash it all away..." she begged.

Then, she ran for it.

Like a glass wall her stillness broke and Ampere was suddenly bolting across the Endless Blue, wet sands kicked up in her wake and soon after, healing water.

A storm is growing overhead. Dark clouds fill a gray sky with wind and rain, the droplets slow and first and then steadily increasing as you run into the water. Waves, agitated by the storm, lap at your body, undertow pulling you asunder.

You fall, swept away under water, struggling to breath until.

You can. A big, bright bubble latched onto your nostrils, giving you much needed air as an entire world opened beneath you. Fish. Turtles. Coral. An entire reef. That was when you saw something shimmer.

A shield.

As if magnetized, the etched metal wriggled from beneath the sand, finding you easily, and a school of fishes help you carry it to shore.

The bubble leaves you the second your head breaks the water, and in the center of the storm is a bare spot - a ray of sunshine like fire burning a hole in the darkness.

You can go south down the beach. Left toward the mainland. Or, you can go north up the beach with your shield.

Slowly drifting, drifting away, wave after wave

She has swam in the ocean before, but it is a frightening experience every time, much different from the stillness of the oasis. The ocean, with all her vastness and murk, was mysterious, dangerous, unkind in as equally as she was beautiful and healing. So Ampere was not initially alarmed at the strength of the waves as they kicked around her, but a rising panic did settle inside of her as she started to go under. There was a brief moment, when she was choking on saltwater and couldn't tell up from down, when she thought that this could be a fitting death - killed by the very thing she loved... except she didn't want to die, not yet. It was not that she feared the inevitable demise of her being, the unstoppable decline of her body, the slowing of her heart into a memory, all of that she understood and expected. Just, not yet.

Yet for all her struggling, all her fight, she was powerless in the big blue. Just as she was starting to accept the reality of this final swim, Ampere found her breath. She choked on it at first, alarmed more than anything by this new sensation of breathing, again, except still in fucking water. "What is happening?" came the wild voice of her frightened thoughts, but soon enough they gaze way to a serenity as she found not death, but life under here. She laughed into her air bubble at the antics of fish, gasped at the colorful landscapes that she drifted past, and smiled at the currents as she moved through them. It was so achingly familiar that it felt like home. Was she to be the first sea horse? Was she meant to sail, rather than fly? She had always thought the wind her home, but maybe it was the sea...

A sparkle caught her eye. Blue gaze coasted over the metal flash, and in response, it wiggled free, shooting towards her. Ampere's eyes widened, and her feathers bristled faintly, soggy but still emotional under the sea. "A shield?" she murmured to herself, 'brow furrowing as she traced the mark of the sun on it. What was a sun shield doing here, of all places? Lost at sea perhaps, from the shores of his home, but so strange. She wanted to get it out to inspect it, forgetting in an instant the urge to live under here.

It would have been lonely if she stayed - maybe she already recognized that.

She broke the surface, not with a gasp or a sputtering of water, but as easily as if she he switched from an air current to a thermal, rather than sea to sky. Her mane lapped at her neck, and her tail at her hocks, as she drug herself and sphere of metal out of the water. She gave herself a hefty shake as she slipped back onto the sand, and there finally got a good look at her find. "Now what?" she wondered, glancing around. Could she really carry this all the way home? Was it even her right to?

Musing, Ampere began to walk south along the beach, trying to dry off while she thought. Her magic leapt out at intervals to the shield, pulling on its electrical currents to carry it with her until she decided one way or another. Maybe the ocean would give her more advice. The fish had helped her carry it out, so it seemed as if it was a gift, but it was so strange.

Some things just weren't meant to be questioned though, and sometimes Ampere was okay with that. Today was one of those days. She was content just to be, and she felt a great deal lighter after her romp in the salt. Still, couldn't hurt to linger longer, listening to her old friend.

You may have wandered this beach a thousand times, you with your new shield. The metal had a handle on it made of leather, but your magic worked well to carry this new treasure. Today was a different day though, and this time, this thousandth and one time... well... it was very different.

You moved south, toward the remnants of the marsh, long dead and not capable of supporting intrusion. But trees, long dead and etched with salt, sprouted from the sand more frequently. They were like markers of the dead, heralds of emptiness.

But before your eyes, one began to bloom.

Blue flowers rapidly grew on green that erupted from the center of the tree, cracking the brittle outer shell like bone. In the center of each one was a dagger, sharp and dangerous, but only five were mature enough, strong enough, to be useful.

You should pluck them, take the five daggers with you on this journey. Each of them were named. A wind blew across the seas, a gasping breath of "Scint". Scint. That was the name of one of the blades, and the sharp metal glowed blue, enchanted.

You could go left, inland, or back north.

The rest of the daggers needed names.

[[you are welcome to suggest names that you want for them!! These will all be enchanted]]

Slowly drifting, drifting away, wave after wave

Ampere had never ventured this far south. She had seen the land in her flights, and she had recognized its decay, which had been enough to satisfy whatever itch of curiosity there was for her. With enough darkness in the world already, she never felt the need to specifically seek it out. Now though, lost in her own thoughts as she wandered down the shore, she slipped towards the blackened point of the world; a stain of decay and demise that had never shaken off the infection from those long nights.

Ampere brushed passed one of the salt stained trees as she walked. Her shield struck it, her magic becoming clumsy with all the use. Salt shuddered from the tombstone of bark, encouraging Ampere's attention. She hummed aloud as she reached down for her new found armor, noticing for the first time the leather strap on it. Gripping it with her teeth Ampere pulled it back to her an- thunk. The metal hit the sand with a soft woosh of air. Ampere was not normally so careless (though if the shield couldn't handle a drop from her, it would be of no use at all), but something else demanded her focus.

She gasped as she watched petals unfurl in a dazzling display of blues and greens, like the ocean being born on a tree. The delicate, vibrant petals seemed so unfitting on the dry and salt-rusted skeleton of life. Just another reminder for her that not everything had to make sense, especially not when daggers blossomed instead of nectar.

Startled by that revelation as the last twist of color pulled away over the metal shine, Ampere stepped back. Magic! her mind shouted, and in response she was on alert. Magic was not inherently good or bad, but was just a tool which responded to its wielder, and in such, could not be trusted until the hand that bore it was known. Even the gods of Helovia were tricky to trust; was this their work? The shield was marked with a sun after all, but this place of ruin didn't seem his domain.

So Ampere waited, ears twitching at the sound of splintering wood and shattering salt, eyes blinking as they gawked at the dagger blossoms, and breath caught in her lungs. She let it out, low and slow, when nothing happened. Ampere glanced on either side of her, then stepped forward. Her hoof slid against the edge of her shield, its cold curve already a familiar and welcome reminder of strength. She took another step, nose extended towards the pointed center of the nearest bud. She sniffed it, but found nothing amiss. She touched it, skin twitching at the sharpness of the point and the chill of the waiting blade. "Hmmm," she mused, pondering, before reching out with teeth and gripping the metal shaft. She plucked the fierce flower. A wind picked up then, brushing her mane to the other side of her neck. "Scint" the breeze whispered, and in response the blade gave off a blue light, as if it were the speaker.

Ampere dropped it in the sands, staring wide eyed at the glint of pewter and blue; the shield reflected it nicely. "What?" she asked softly, and once again stared about, expectant. When nothing came, she could only surmise that she was alone, and that these were either gifts, or she was very fortunate. Ampere had grown rather fond of her two daggers (did they have names!?), and was not against using more and creating a storm of swords.

So slyly she took four more, and each time one was plucked, its name whispered across the beach to her.
"Forza, Melos, Issck, Euske." A bouquet of knives, five sisters of steel. Ampere smiled, tucking each into a secure spot near her wings after taking the time to admire them all in turn. Curious, she took out her other two daggers. She had never thought to give them names, which was strange really, given that she knew her name came from her father's sword - part of what had driven her to this land where he once belonged.

The bone dagger spoke the moment she took it out, its voice coming across louder than the flower blades. "FEUSOHM" it roared in its quiet wind, rough and ancient. It belonged to the creature of fire and flame that she had once fought, something she didn't seem to recognize until now as it's name, the creature's name, resonated inside of her. With new found respect for it, she slid it back into its sheath, pulling out her first dirk.

It's metal shaft glinted in the sun, deadly, but beautiful. She waited with baited breath, but nothing came, not even a wind picked up. Was it...dead? Ampere turned it with her electricity, shifting its light in the sun. Again she waited, but again nothing came. At least, she didn't think so, until she got very close to it and listened, her ear turned towards it. "The watching shift goes ever on?" she queried, unsure if that was what she heard - it certainly didn't seem like a name. The blade changed though, responding to her voice. Gone was the glitter of sunlight, replaced instead with a horse bathed in white and red... red stripes? Ampere turned her head, trying to get one of her eyes closer, but it didn't help makes the image any sharper. Still, was that, Maren? The background seemed too green to be the Throat though. The images were moving too, and as one blurred, another came into view, mostly white but flecked with black. He wasn't as visually remarkable as Maren, but still the longer she watched him, the more Ampere was sure she was seeing Mauja. Mauja and Maren talking, in a forest. Was it real?

Why not?
"Tuor." The word slipped from Ampere's lips confidently as she shook her head, slipping the seeing blade back into its sheath. It had a phrase, not a name, but she felt it deserved one, because it was special.

Loaded with new weaponry, like she'd gone grocery shopping at the local warrior mart, Ampere glanced down at her shield. "Do you need a name?" Ampere grinned as she gripped its leather strap. It might feel left out now, after witnessing the naming ceremony, but she wasn't sure shields ever got names. Maybe her son would like to call it something, if she ever made it back there with all of this.

Deciding she ought to at least start back, still on foot because she didn't think she could fly with all this, Ampere turned to move inland. The Rotunda was there too, far ahead, where she had watched Maren and Mauja. Maybe she'd come across them... though she wasn't able to decipher that foliage as rotunda, luck seemed on her side as of late.

About time.

Five blades responded at the utterance of the phrase, each of them pointing Ampere in the same direction. They would all show the same image since they were all in the presence of Ampere, but they were not loyal blades. Very few blades were truly loyal, their thirst for battle overwhelming any sense of ownership. She could give them away at will, and they would serve her own as long as they kept them in their possession.

The tree faded as you walked away, the magic returning back to the earth. It was now just a broken, dead thing on the beach - a final bastion of life on a long stretch of salt.

Perhaps the shield needed a name, one day. They did not have as much personality as knives and swords, you see. Taking the brunt of life's damage was a wearisome task, not meant for an abundance of life.

But, you were guided to a nearby stump, a perfect place to rest your large, cumbersome shield. In fact, it fit perfectly in a groove carved there so many years ago. You put it there, of course, because why not? If something fits, should you not give it a try?

That was when the clouds parted, briefly. A thin ray of sunlight hit the shield squarely, the surface glistening with orange, bright magic. The film of light danced across the shield, giving it strange, runic grooves, and suddenly, it collapsed. All at once, the big shield became small, much easier to carry and tote around on your body.

With a single breath of yours, it expanded once more, and the sunlight faded away.

And thus was the end of your journey.

For now.

Slowly drifting, drifting away, wave after wave

Tuor might have been the first, but he (she, it??) was not the last as her phrase resonated with all of the blades, the same image reflecting off each of their surfaces. Ampere gasped, dropping Tuor briefly in her surprise. For a moment all she could do was stare at all of them. What was this? She had been carrying Tuor around for a while, and he'd already tasted blood, but how had his ability eluded her all this time?

Was it because the Whatch had only just become a reality? Was this... a gift so that her eyes could see where she could not? It came at such an opportune time, and with that phrase, linking all of them... Ampere smiled. It was a small, private sort of line, one forged not out of delight, but private happiness. Ampere knew instantly how she might best put these blades to use.

So Ampere continued, sheathing them all, and speaking to the shield. As she made to depart, she chanced a glance over her shoulder. That the dagger tree had seemingly vanished didn't bother her nearly as much as it might have, not after everything that had happened to her today. Magic, and Helovia, were mysterious things that she recognized she hadn't even begun to understand. Sometimes questions didn't need asking.

Gripping the leather in her teeth, Ampere was grateful for the stump before her. Although a well muscled warrior, she couldn't say she often practiced dragging or carrying things... though maybe she ought to, if it would help strengthen her bite any. The struggle of the massive metal disk had brought a sweat to her neck, noticeable only as her body had dried from the ocean's touch, though trails of salt remained. Folds of wet stained her hide darker where the exertion showed, lending her breaths to faster, deeper pulls as well. Still, Ampere was determined to have this shield, she just needed a moment to rest.

Setting the metal on the stump, Ampere leaned back on her legs and stretched them. As she did, light enveloped the little spot she had claimed, and in response the shield grew dazzling bright. Blue eyes at once widened, nerves prickling with the sensation of magic once again. In a blink, the shield was a small button. Ampere's flesh quivered, mixed with both surprise and nervousness. Just what was happening today? Who...why...

She shook her head after a moment, gathering herself. She waited, not for more, but to be sure she wasn't missing something, or interrupting. When her breaths had calmed and the beach was quiet, Ampere reached down to pick up her small shield. As her magic pulled out for it, she was surprised that the weight hadn't changed at all. It tumbled into the sand, heavier than she had anticipated. Hurriedly she picked it back up, the electricity around it buzzing as she pulled it and placed it snugly within one of the knife sheaths. Still dense, but much easier to carry now.

Satisfied all her things were secure, Ampere was finally able to take to her wings, forgetting the tiger mare and the spotted snow as she hurried home, ready to WHATCH.
