ARELI

It has been growing progressively colder, and you find yourself shivering a little as you stand at the edge of the freezing pond. Now nearly fully fledged, your dark wings offer some protection against the chill, and you hug them to your sides, feathers puffed for warmth as you look to the gray heavens. The air feels sharp and metallic, but the clear skies of Orangemoon are gone. Instead, thick clouds hang low over the Falls, pregnant with the first snowfall you will ever experience. Oh, you’ve seen the stuff of course, mostly on your trip to the Steppe with Mama, but you have no concept of how all the white got there. It simply is, just as you are—you are not one much for questioning your place in this world.

Well, except for when it comes to Papa, you guess. Your father is the one thing that has consistently puzzled you, being that he is the only member of your small family who has no wings. You didn’t pay much attention to it at first, but as your own feathers have grown in and your flight muscles have begun to develop, you have to wonder. At first, you reason that you are a girl and Mama is a girl, and so you have wings and…but there your logic falls apart. You know plenty of boys with wings, like Ilios and Kaj, so it couldn’t be that. Brow furrowed, you contemplate again, reaching down for a drink of water.

And then it hits you. Your own reflection stares back at you, and it suddenly occurs to you that maybe Illy is the answer. Mama has wings, so he has wings. And Papa has a horn, so Illy does too. But then that means…your worried face stares up at you, wondering: where’s your horn?

You've got to find Papa.

Casting one last sweep over the grounds below the dappled soldier finally was satisfied that no one lurked beyond the borders. Reaching his mind out he was easily able to find his bonded's and was pleased to find her also concluding that his findings were correct. Well unless you consider the field mice that had perished along the way after crossing paths with Kiara. " Takeout." She chimed in with perfect timing as always before sauntering up out of the longer grass to join her companion. Call them what you wish but it is still rather disgusting. A soft chuckle left his lips as he pulled his expression into one of mock disgust before just shaking his head. The pair of them did create a rather odd match but neither of them would change it for the world.

White plumes of condensed air sprouted from the stallion's nostrils as he loped the remainder of the distance back to where he had started to perhaps settle down for a nap. Patrols had been rather uneventful over the last week or two but after such a drastic change in scenery from the Falls, to the Edge and then back to the Falls he felt that they all had shared enough drama for quite awhile. Shaking off the dusting of snowflakes that had accumulated upon his hide over the last couple hours the grey finally slowed, pausing momentarily to turn his attention to the figure that had appeared just up in the distance. It took a moment for his silver eyes to sweep over the young pegasus's frame before the familiar face brought a warm smile to his face. Areli. Each time he came upon his daughter he was amazed at how much she had grown in such a short time. It seemed like yesterday that she was learning how to take her first steps, geeze where had the time gone?
Picking up a lofty trot the brute nickered gently as he strode forward to meet his daughter with Kiara bringing up the rear. Granted his speed was much quicker than her sauntering walk so it was no doubt who would get to Areli first.

No sooner do you think his name than a deep nicker rumbles from behind you, and you turn to see Papa himself. Your face breaks into a jubilant smile, and you flutter-hop towards him in that way you’ve been practicing, leaping and bounding with all of the enthusiasm of an overeager child. “PAPA!” you squeal, delighted at his sudden appearance. Mama was good at that too—just think her name, and suddenly she was there. “Was jus’ thinkinbout you!” Some might say you’re growing old for this kind of behavior, but whoever they are, they must have never said it to you, for it seems the most natural thing in the world for you to greet him in this manner. When it comes to those you love, you are free with your affection. You bounce up to him glowing like a sunbeam that defies the clouds, little muzzle doing its best to shove its way toward him and hoping for a nuzzle or two.

”Papapapapapa—“ you chant, body wriggling this way and that as you dance around him. Since he’s been gone patrolling, you haven’t seen him in a good while, and your excitement temporarily overrides your horn troubles. ”Where you go? Lotsa stuff been happenin’.” You pause in your prancing for a moment to eye him somberly and somewhat self-importantly, wondering if he knew about Ilios. At the thought of your brother, you glance down to where his pendant is swinging from your chest and exhale softly. “Didja know that Illy went away, Papa?” you ask, looking up into your father’s eyes.

Chuckling softly as the joyful squeals of delight broke the silence he felt his heart glow with happiness. It was a good feeling to have someone in your life that would get so excited just to see your face. Ilios had never seemed overly thrilled to see him when he was younger but that couldn't be helped. Part of it was his own fault for not choosing family first but another part was his mother taking Ilios away without so much as an explanation. Even when the decision to return to his family had been made his son always seemed to view him as a stranger. It hurt to see that expression come across his face to know that his own son treated him with such distance. No matter what he had tried to do, nothing ever seemed to break through to him. It was one of his biggest regrets and one that would continue to haunt him for as long as he lived. Focusing his energy back to the present he lowered his head to nuzzle his daughter should she allow him.

"Kiara and I were out patrolling to make sure that everyone is safe. I missed you the entire time though but we are back now for awhile." He replied affectionately lipping at Areli's short mane. It was strange to be a parent but it was also the best feeling in the world. To have someone love you just for being there for them and loving them, it was just incredible. The news that came next was a shock for the stallion for this was the first that he had heard of his son leaving. Ilios? Where? When? "What do you mean Ilios went away? Do you know where he went?" He asked gently his voice full of concern. Why was he only finding out about this now? Parelia, why had she not mentioned this before? Frustration brewed deep down as the news settled over him like a blanket. Yet another thing that had been kept from him... what else did he not know? He would surely have to speak to his mate about all this for he did not like being the last to know about something regarding his family. His family was his life yet somehow everyone seemed to hide things from him only to have him find out from a secondary source. This was something that needed to stop for it was unfair and hurtful that he was not included in things that would affect his family.

You stand still for a moment, basking in Papa’s affection. His large muzzle tickles as he tugs at your mane fondly, and you giggle. It was good to have someone’s undivided attention; since Illy had gone, you sometimes felt like Mama’s mind was in other places. You didn’t begrudge her her sadness, but the loss of your second-best playmate had left you hungry for affection.

The moment does not last for long though, for as soon as you mention Ilios, Papa grows serious. "What do you mean Ilios went away?” he asks, meeting your eyes. “Do you know where he went?" You fail to notice the frustration in his eyes, but you do pick up on the surprise. Proud to be the bearer of new news, you draw yourself up. “Yessir,” you tell him, “Went to the Throat, back b’fore the leaves all fell down. I tried to tell’m not to go, but he wouldn’t listen and Mama wouldn’t—“ And here a sudden idea occurs to you. Maybe Mama had allowed Illy to leave, but… “Papa,” you interrupt yourself, looking up at him with growing hope, “Make him come back! I’ll go with you!”Though he wouldn’t listen to you, surely he would have to do what Papa said. Illy might think that he was grown up, but you knew better. Underneath the brave face he’d put on, he had to want to come home. After all, home was where Mama and Papa and you were. Why wouldn’t he want to be with his family?

OOC: Sorry it’s so short and sad! Hoping my muse picks up with her :/

How could something like this happen without his knowledge? How could he have not known? Did Parelia know? Each question only hurt more and more knowing that for some reason he had purposefully been left out of the equation. Did his opinion not matter anymore? Shaken by the suddenness of the news he couldn't help but remain silent while his brain fired all these questions around. Kiara pressed gently against his mind trying to comfort the turmoil growing inside him with each passing moment. All of his initial reservations and fears of becoming like his own father picked steadily at the wall he had built to close it off from everything he had built, or rather what he had thought he had. It was terrifying to see everything slipping away from him and not being able to do a damn thing about it. First Parelia and now Ilios? What was happening?

Remaining as passive as mentally possible he continued to give Areli his complete and undivided attention hoping to hide his emotions from sight until he could figure things out. Sighing softly at long last he watched his daughter switch from being saddened by her brother's departure to the lively let's get something done kind of girl. If only things worked like that in real life then there would be no problem that would go unsolved. "Wait a second now, we can't just rush over there and drag him back, well not yet anyway. While it would solve the problem it wouldn't be fair to your brother." He tried to reason with both himself and Areli. Despite how much he wished that would work he knew better than to try and do anything that harsh. It would only cause more problems than there needed to be. Surely there had to be something that could help persuade his son to come back home. "I have to talk to your mom first and see what all she said to him before he left. I promise you though that I will try my best to bring him home. Until then I guess you will be stuck with me." He joked chuckling softly touching his muzzle to Areli's side and giving her a gentle nudge.

To your dismay, Papa acts like the responsible grown-up he is. Even though it’s a good plan, he explains that it wouldn’t be fair to Ilios. Your wings sag, but you accept his authority without question. Papa knows what he’s doing. He’s strong, and brave, and though you don’t see him much, you have set him on a pedestal: he can do no wrong.

For this reason, you perk up considerably at his next display of gentle affection, gamboling at his side and playfully attempting to headbutt his shoulder. “Guess I will!” you chortle, still dancing at his side. “But I like bein’ stuck to you, Papa…’S’nice,” you add, a little shyly. You love him freely, but he is still the most mysterious member of your family to you, and you are not always as confident around him as with Mama or with Ilios. All the same, you soak in every moment with your father greedily, just happy to be in his presence. Your short brush of a tail flicks back and forth in contentment, and you gaze earnestly up at him. What could he be thinking? You wonder.

”Hey Papa…” you ask softly, another idea occurring to you. ”Could we…could we go on an a’venture sometime? Just you’n’me?” Mama often takes you with her around Helovia, but somehow you get the sense that your father knows more of the world. He must, with all of the patrolling he does. Your heart quickens at the thought of exploring by his side, visions of splashing across brooks and ducking under canopies of leaves dancing in your head. You can see it all now! Eyes pleading yet excited, you wait for his response, silently praying that he’ll say yes.

OOC: Sorry, I've been pretty short with all my characters lately--getting back in the swing of things!

It was unsettling news to hear that his only son had gone and left them without so much as a goodbye (well him at least). For the life of him he could not figure out why Ilios had been so distant from him almost his entire life. Nothing he had done had wronged him in any way, shape or form, it just did not make any sense. It had been Parelia that had got up and left without warning how was he supposed to react when everything he had worked to build had basically been shoved back in his face. She didn't understand the commitment that he had owed to this herd and how big the decision was to walk away from the only home he had ever known. Almost two years had passed since his arrival here in Helovia, how could she possibly expect him to give up everything and turn his back on the family they had shared, until then at least. It had taken him a couple weeks to make the hard choice of telling Midas that he was leaving and tying up the last few ends, but he had left all for his family. He had visited every chance he got before this not wanting to be without his son in his life but somehow none of that seemed to matter anymore. Parelia must have made him believe those things for he had done nothing wrong! Everything had been given up for his family, everything! How could she do this when she said she had loved him without so much as an explanation. Of course it would always be her word over his yet he was the bad guy for loving his family too much and wanting to build a life for them. It just was not right or fair.

Frustration boiled from within as each memory turned from a happy one to one that depicted him as Parelia obviously did, a sad pathetic loser who wasn't capable of finding love. He would give his life for his children and for the mare who had captured his heart if it meant they would be safe and out of harms way, yet for her that still didn't seem to be enough. This distance she had created between them had not started only recently it had been happening all the way along, he had just been too in love to see it. Reality hurt like a bitch but he would never stop fighting for his two kids even when one seemed to hate him. It was Areli's sweet voice that drew his mind from its war to focus on one of the things he cherished most in this cruel world. Her words made his heart swell with pride and happiness even in the darkest times and he really needed it right now. " I like being stuck with you too." He replied with a lopsided grin his head lowering to her level once again.

It was this small bit of happiness that would help keep him going, without it his soul would be forever left to wander these lands alone while his corpse rotted at the bottom of the ocean. "Of course we can! You just tell me where you want to go and then we go on an adventure, just the two of us." Nodding his approval the smile never left his lips. This was the only thing that he had left and he would be damned if he would let his sorrow get in the way. Areli had done nothing wrong and he would make sure that she did not suffer for the choices others believed to be the right thing to do. He would be a part of his daughter's life and perhaps eventually a part of his son's as well, Parelia would never take that away from him.
