He was loathe to leave it. Already the cold skin mourned the warm heated touch of the steam. It was replaced once again by snow, and the more the golden journeyed in it the more he cursed it. He was not built for winter’s cold and snow’s icy bite. He grew from deserts, and oases. But of course, anything would do now. Usually this time of year he found some excuse to bow out of the mountain’s frozen grip, but a series of unfortunate events was holding him here. Also unfortunately the list of that series was growing. However much he wanted to stay at the hot springs his tasks called him to move on and look for another.

Roland had shown up where he was heading once before and he was hoping to find the copper man there again. Compared to the others he was actually looking forward to this. The copper man had been the golden’s equal in rank, but now the power balance had shifted. The golden’s head truly was crowned now. As he came to the unfrozen lake the golden laughed to himself at the thought. Haldir behind him, dragging to leave the springs perked up at this, but then is quickly distracted again by fighting snow drifts the golden’s tall legs had not conquered.

At last the pair comes to the lake edge. The golden’s personal comfort came first of course. He steps, with his growing deer, to the water’s edge and both drink their fill of its unfrozen surface. Shaking his horns as he finishes the gold at last looks about. He was nearly done, and this was to be the most entertaining out of all. “Roland!” The calm voice bellows. As much as he tried to hide it there are some things you cannot deny- a grin lite his face as he waited.

never take advice from someone who just admitted to being devious and just confessed to treason

Winter had rolled into the north with a savage brutality, and all too suddenly the hills and flats had been smothered beneath a fortress of ice. Roland had never taken kindly to the bitter winds and drifts of snow that came with Frostfall, turning instead to the shelter of the caves and what little warmth could be found within their depths. It was not the most exciting way to pass the time, and he often longed for the temperate climate of the south, to see the sun again, released from gray clouds that bore only snow. Thick drifts now covered the pathways and obstructed the mountain pass, and though he might have tried to deny it, to distract himself from it, Roland felt undeniably trapped. He had been stirred out of his solitude by a familiar, though not entirely welcome voice. It was quiet, beneath the rocks and tucked away from the tempestuous winds. He was almost content to entertain himself with thoughts and memories, but it seemed he was to be drawn out and away from peaceful isolation.

As reluctant as he was to venture into the open air, he wasted no time in responding to the call. Withdrawing from shadow, he winced against the assaulting light of the sun, tucking chin to chest against a buffeting wind as he trailed the curving edge of the lake, walking until the golden form of Thranduil was visible in the distance, his high spirited companion not far away from the new Lord. Roland hoped he had called upon him to bestow some task, some duty, no matter how insignificant- for he was eager for something, anything with which to occupy his time, and Gods forbid it be a mere social call instead. Or perhaps he wished to gloat, but Roland would not give him the satisfaction of feeling jealousy. He was absolved of envy, free of malice, for the only quarrel he had with the golden stallion was that he did not trust his motives, and always wanted what was best for his herd.

"Thranduil," he called once he was at a close distance, drawing to a halt at the water's edge. There was an amiable smile on his lips, though his ease tempered somewhat by the grin upon Thranduil's face, the reason for which Roland postulated could be nothing good; yet he was determined to keep their meeting pleasant, and so his manners did not falter. "Congratulations."

The copper man was in luck, this wasn’t just a social call. The golden lifted his head as he heard the coming of the stallion, and his smile grew all the more to see once against his commanding summons answered. Yes, that made this all a little easier. Especially though to see the man who had bested him at riddle come, was a treat. Tasseled tail flicked at his hinds at the pleasure. Haldir was more enthusiastic. He saw yet another creature come to his bonded’s call and his small face lite up. He remembered this stallion from the night on the beach with the turtle. Jogging over he comes to stand just a little ahead of the golden, waiting for any attention he could pull.

The gold had grown used to ignoring Haldir’s light movements which were so against his own heart. Instead he nodded as the copper man spoke his name, and his grin grew exponentially to hear the congrats. He did not care if the copper man did not sulk, that wasn’t what his pride bounded from. No, what he loved the most was that the man had come at all and recognized his superiors. He was, after all, here to prove he could slip by and present a pleasant, good face as well. The golden was always a vain creature.

Still there was business to be done, and while the golden did enjoy hanging his crowned head higher than the Impersonator. So he nods to the compliment again and moves on directly. “You might have noticed Roland the place beside Arah remains empty.” It had been a regretted notion she was Thief after her outburst, but the decision had been made. “To judge you against your peer, Grimalkin, you have been tasked with an expedition.” Even as excited as he was to hold his rank over Roland and command him, this part was a bit boring. “You are to gain something from a herd, an outcast, and a stealth. Preferably successful.” A brow raises with the hint of a challenge, but he moves on. Even that small excitement not able to hold over the course of the boring speech. “Whatever you gain, bring it, and return to me when you have completed your expedition.” The golden beast sighs, but his smirk never has left.

OOC :: @[Roland] must gain something (item, information, access) from a herd, outcast, and stealth. Unlimited timeline, though two seasons is suggested. Given the nature of this expedition you are allowed to make multiple attempts at your tasks (especially the stealth). Just return with your final submissions. The purpose is judge him against Grimalkin for rank and magic purposes. If you have any questions feel free to ask icly or oocly, and good luck!

never take advice from someone who just admitted to being devious and just confessed to treason

It seemed some good fortune had finally come his way, for the first words from Thranduil's mouth were not some thinly veiled attempts at an insult, or an otherwise prideful remark, but mentions of an objective. His interest piqued, Roland listened good naturedly to what the golden stallion had to say. His shoulders remained hunched against the chill, as if hoping that curling into himself might make the bitter wind take less notice of him, but it still battered against his sides, snowflakes tangling in his copper mane. It was unpleasant to say the least, and not for the first time that day he longed for the thaw of Birdsong. Once the newly crowned Lord had finished explaining the task, Roland nodded in understanding, an eager glint in his eyes. He looked out across the frozen lake in speculation, a tentative smile curling along the edges of his lips.

The expedition could not have come at a better time, when he had new magic and was itching for any opportunities to put it to the test. It was not a gift that had been procured easily, and he was not interested in letting it go to waste while he busied himself with other menial occupations, like hiding beneath the earth. "That should make for some interesting opportunities," he said, turning back to Thranduil with a smile. "Thank you. I will speak with you again soon." With a polite bow of his head, he turned away and made for his cave, mind turning over thoughts of what he could accomplish within the parameters of what was given to him.
