There was a fire starting in her heart as she poured it out to the Gaucho. Passion lit her gaze as she glanced up at him, her brow raising regally as she grew more impassioned. For so long, she had wondered what was missing in her life, why she could not seem to find her way, to find her purpose. And yet... as she considered the possibility of being able to truly protect herself and, better yet, her family, she found a new exhilaration that had never risen within her before. She had fought so long to hold peace in her heart, terrified of the darkness that violence had brought to her family. Never had she considered that if she had been able to fight, they might not all be dead now.

The excitement coursed through her veins even as the WildFire stepped away, regarding her coolly. There was something new and electric in the air between them, something that she could not name. Gone was the fiery passion of their romance, replaced by an unspoken challenge. They had for so long been tied by lust, then by love, but this - this was entirely different, enticing and catching, as though the very air around them might combust at any moment. She had relied on his touch for so long that the distance was foreign. She welcomed it, beckoned it forward, jittery with anticipation. Things had changed, somehow.

She hoped it would be for the better.

"Then teach me," she taunted. She waited, a flicker of fear surfacing with the adrenaline - but she had to start somewhere, and there was no turning back now. Muscles tensed and wings half-extended, she watched her mate for a reaction to her invitation.

"Talk talk talk."

I'd bring you further roses but it does you no good.

That Sohalia had a well of hidden strength was something that Gaucho had known for several seasons now. She had led the Dragon's Throat in his absence, and had returned relatively unscathed from her capture. For a mare who appeared as pristine and delicate as the crystalline magic she controlled, she was just as hard as her glimmering creations.

As Sohalia stepped back, wings tentatively held from her sides in a nearly defensive position, Gaucho was surprised. Only moments before the mare had said that she wanted to take her place as a warrior, to contribute fully to the herd, but Gaucho had never suspected that she wanted her training to begin literally right now.

A chill reverberated down the dun's spine, and could not entirely be attributed to the Frostfall chill in the air. Part of him wondered if this was simply her way of bridging the distance that her departure (and his time spent with Ampere) had placed between the two (not that she knew about the latter reason). Surely she would know how he felt about sparring and training. That the electric impulses that ignited in his primitive mind would only be amplified in the presence of one who he had shared so much of his body and soul?

Well, if it was all merely manipulation, he would enter into it happily, but not lightly.

Regarding her for a moment, the change in his stance was subtle yet apparent. His muscles tensed, his stature grew taller, and his gaze narrowed and focused. Gaucho looked at her now not as a past lover, not as his mate, but as an opponent. The curves of her physique drew blood lust, rather than carnal desire as he scanned her ivory hills and valleys.

With a grunt, Gaucho lunged forward. He tried to eliminate the distance between them with a long energetic stride while simultaneously trying to keep their shoulders mirrored. In the past he had enveloped her much smaller body in the breadth of his body and wings, and now he aimed to duplicate those previous actions. Sohalia was petite compared to him, but not just compared to him: she was small compared to most. It was a fact that she would have to face head on - which was quite literally the motivation behind his attack. He aimed to force her face into the blue-striped muscles of his chest and roughly shove her backwards, while simultaneously enveloping her sides with his much larger wings. She would know that his fire held no danger to her at this point, but he hoped his positioning if nothing else would force her to retreat.

Sohalia

For the first time in many seasons, the dove felt clear-headed.  She was doing something for herself, for her family, something that would make her better suited to serve their needs and her own.  She was taking a stand and making a change, doing something that would make a difference to her herd.  She was building a relationship with not only her mate, but her Sultan, a relationship based on more than purely sex and the resulting children.  There was something intoxicating about the way adrenaline rushed through her veins, the way her body responded to her commands as she readied herself for battle.  This was what drew Gaucho to love being a warrior.

And if her status as a budding warrior brought the pair of them closer together, she certainly wouldn't complain.

He stared at her for a moment before subtly shifting, and suddenly he appeared larger and more powerful than he ever had before.  She hesitated, quailing slightly before his might, afraid of the pain he could cause her if he so chose.  Her hesitation was all he needed.  He lunged forward, his wings wrapping forward and attempting to encircle her as he had so many times before - but in this context it would be an entirely unpleasant embrace, one that she had no interest in experiencing.  She backpedaled, her dainty hooves scrabbling in the hard dirt-sand mixture surrounding the oasis.  Realizing quickly that this was a mistake - his larger size made his stride much larger than hers, particularly as he was moving forward and she backward - she tried to spin to the right and duck under his wing.

She wasn't quick enough.  His wing caught her in the chest, just missing her pendant and forcing the air in her lungs out in a soft, "Oomph!"  His chest rammed into her barrel, causing her to stagger sideways.  Tears sprang to her eyes, more as a result of the surprise than the pain, and through her panic she realized that she could, perhaps, use this to her advantage.  She glanced up at him, trying to make eye contact as she allowed the tears to spill over, rolling down her cheeks and glistening in the sun's light.  Then, somewhat disoriented, the only thing she could think to do was to lunge to the right again, hoping that her ploy would have cause him to pause.  She tried to end up facing away from him so that she could kick out and up as hard as she could, hoping to strike his neck (she couldn't reasonably expect to hit his head, as tall as he was in comparison to her short stature).  Maybe she would at least hit his chest, buying enough time for her to dart away from him, still wheezing slightly from his impact.

The dove tried to get away from him and circle to his left, giving herself an opportunity to catch her breath and plan her next move.  A quick analysis of her injuries left her wincing at what would surely be a painful bruise on her chest and a similar twinging pain in her left side.  Thankfully, adrenaline seemed to be keeping the majority of the pain away for now, but later, she would definitely be hurting.

"Talk talk talk."

GAUCHO
I'd bring you further roses but it does you no good.

With a satisfying give, Gaucho felt as Sohalia's body easily moved with the force of his own. For once, in likely the entirety of their relationship, no fire burned and raced through Gaucho's loins. His mind wasn't carried away by her scent, or the supple curve of her body against his own. Although his mind was singularly focused, the direction of his attention had definitely shifted. The embrace didn't last long, as her much smaller frame moved sideways, as if rolling along the length of his shoulders. With a masculine grunt, the Wildfire tilted his crowned skull downwards, to watch as his pale (former?)mate moved away from him - only to see tears brightly streaking down from her bi-tonal eyes and onto her cheeks.

Did she think such a thing would stop him? That it would make him halt, pull back, or pause?

She was right to - it had with Ampere. For the briefest of moments, his mind flit back to Ampere's body crumpling downwards onto the sands; to his anguish and grief at having no choice but to temporarily decimate her consciousness. He could remember the way his heart tugged at his chest and his mind, as a very large part of him wanted to refuse to deal such a damning blow to one he cared about so deeply. And yet he had. Tears had slipped from Ampere's eyes then, and they had given him pause.

But it wouldn't now.

Was it that the dun was merely misplacing his guilt over thinking of Ampere when battling Sohalia? Was it that he regretted sending the blue to her knees, when he should have let her walk away? Or was his anger righteously directed towards Sohalia? For her long absence as of late? Whatever it was - it struck Gaucho's mind hard, and he struck at her even harder.

It took a moment for the pain from her attack to fully penetrate into his rattled mind. At first the pressure of her hooves against the muscles behind his shoulder was nothing more than a twinge. However as he pivoted to follow her movements as she skirted around him, his right front leg nearly gave away as pain ricocheted through. Gaucho had been kicked many times before - but were he to stop and think about it, he had probably never been kicked by hooves as small as Sohalia's. Larger hooves offered the distribution of force over a large surface area - making their impacts feel blunt. This was like knives. Through grit teeth, Gaucho half-grunted, half-squealed his approval through his pain.

Through the half-pulses of fire that shot through his shoulder with every use, Gaucho completed his pivot, his blue-striped shoulders following the trail of the (his?) white dove. Without a pause, he leaned backwards onto his hind legs, and brought his front left hoof down hard onto the ground. The earth convulsed suddenly with magic. His aim was to unsettled her balance before fanning his wings in her direction and releasing a wave of fire.
