Laedere

But if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?

Laedere was confused. So. Very. Confused. What the hell had just happened? Had the blue and black mare been accusing her of harming this other creature? She had never intended to harm Ardere… She was trying to take care of her, like the Earth God had asked…

Was she really doing everything wrong? She shuddered, letting out a snort and clasping her wings tighter around her sides. Aye, Ardere was already circling toward the water in order to continue to play as she always had. Was she always supposed to be in the water? No, it didn't seem like it. She seemed fine in the air on long travels. There was no pain in the emotions that she could feel from Ardere.

And what was this talk as enslavement? She didn't understand. Oh, her brain still hurt. Her brain still spun. Why was all of this happening? Was this a sign from the Earth God that she wasn't doing things right?

"What doth thee want from mineself?!" she cried out to the heavens. She was alone, or at least she thought she was, near the oasis. And, to be quite honest, she didn't expect any kind of answer. After all, she had gotten no answer when she had survived the ashes falling. She had gotten no answer when she had been thrust into this world. And she had gotten no answer any other time she had asked. She had simply had to go, to do things on her own, to hope that something would work out. And it seemed as though Ardere agreed with the belief that there would be no answer. She just wasn't as peeved about it.

"Laedere." Einarr's voice was rough, like sandpaper against hardwood, even now as he swooped down to greet the woman on their shared sands. "What happened?" He asked, tucking his wings neatly into his clean black sides. The warrior had been on patrol when he heard the familiar voice cry out to no one and anyone. Confusion littered his masculine features, and as he stepped towards her, a look of concern entered his red-brown eyes as he lowered his head to breathe towards her. Seasons ago, the stallion had welcomed this flightless mare into the home of the Dragon's Throat, and she had accepted. As a guardian of these sands, of these inhabitants, it was Einarr's job to look after the safety of his herdmates--physical, and if needed, emotional. Einarr was no outright leader, no outstanding citizen, but he was passionate to his duties and he understood well the needs of his own.

Carefully, the stallion looked over to the playing leviathan. His heart tugged with the desire he felt to call a companion his own. He had coveted the desire since his youth, watching several of his herdmates carrying their own bonds. A phoenix called upon Einarr's soul, and he would work hard to attain it. He had been denied this raptor of fire twice, but Einarr would never let go of the dream of sharing his soul, his mind, his heart with something so great. Rusted eyes flicked back to Laedere, head lifting to examine the odd pegasus once more. She did not seem to be in any physical pain--he had already been assured her injured wing was long-ago healed--and so Einarr could not pin what had transpired for this woman to call out in such a manner.

"Someone hurt Laedere?" He asked, tail flicking against his hocks and the flies as he shuffled on cloven hooves, waiting for the more refined woman to answer him.

Laedere
--- I laid beside you and pulled you close
And the two of us went up in smoke ---
Her body shuffled, wings flickering instantly back against her side - to hide the gaping hole that plagued her ability to fly. The sound of wings had caught her attention before her name. Her ears perked up at the rough voice and she moved backward, to allow ample room for the landing. Ardere didn't even pay attention to the approaching pegasus, and continued to do her own thing in the water.

Eyes shifted in recognition as he tucks his wings away, asking what was wrong. Her mind raced, hair being blown forward, hiding her eyes as she dips her head down. Muscles tremble, sides shake as if she were ready to sob. And, as she peaks out from her hair - wings shaking out to the side, stretching out as if to keep her balance even though she didn't need the assistance - she catches the confusion seeping into his gaze. Could he see the pain, the uncertainty, the panic that radiated through her frame? Or had he only come because in her break she had screamed to the heavens?

"Einarr…" she whispered, voice shaking - as if she were speaking a foreign tongue, as if she were going shatter into a million pieces. He asks if someone had hurt her and she can only shake her head. It was as if finding words was too difficult for the mare who was so eloquent with her words. How would she make sure that he understood her? How would she figure out how to explain this.

Mentally, she is struggling.  She doesn't understand how this could be happening. How is she possibly enslaving this creature who barely understands her?! She stutters, when she finally begins to speak. "Mineself… Black and blue female…" her eyes close shut, nostrils flaring as she works through words and the mass of confusion littering her cranium. "Said mineself twas… enslaving… Ardere." Her lips tremble, ears flickering from pinned to alert as she fights back tears. "Mineself dost not wish to… enslave…" Her wings begin to fold back to her side, as if to wrap herself tightly and protect herself from the pain. "She said mineself twas a… 'sick fuck'."

A few tears slip from her eyes and her voice cracks. Body, seeming to wrap into itself, trying to comfort the mare who had refused to cry before those who were her family - or those who she at least hoped were her family.  "Hath I wronged thine Throat so strongly?" And saying those words… it makes her feel as though she can't breathe - as if she should just die so as to not harm the family anymore.

The concern and confusion he felt increased as he watched the female practically shrivel inside of herself. He imagined that if she had the ability to become invisible that she would do so, in this moment, even before him who stood as he brother before her. It pained his heart, his warrior's heart, for even as primal and stoic as he could be, he truly loved and felt passion for this herd and all its members. Laedere especially--for even if her wing was healed, and she was not helpless without the functioning appendage, Einarr felt a special guardianship over the mare he had invited into this family. Sighing, Einarr took a step towards Laedere and blew slow, careful breathes into her nostrils. It was his only way to comfort her.

Her next words, however, made him go rigid with anger and even more confusion. "Ampere?" He asked abruptly, head shooting up to look down on the seafoam mare with skeptical eyes. He knew the woman to be fiery, but would she really treat her own herdmates in such a manner? It seemed so. Einarr grunted some, eyes moving to Ardere. "Ardere not slave. Ardere happy!" He exclaimed, eyes narrowing and inky tail flicking across his hocks. How Dare someone in such power treat a citizen in such a way! How dare Ampere use such language towards Laedere. Molten rage bubbled in his gut, and he snorted again. "What Laedere say back?"

Shock, raw and electric, ripped through his anger as Laedere's last words spilled from her mouth. The stallion's jaw hung open, and in the distance a pindrop could probably be heard. "Oh, sweet Laedere, no..." Einarr finally breathed, taking another step forward to press his forehead into her shoulder. "Laedere safe beneath Einarr's wings." He muttered, his words confident, as he stretched his wings out to shelter the small female.

She wanted a home, but it was as if no one would accept her and her ancient ways. For, she only assumed they were ancient by the way they treated her thoughts on it. Slowly, awkwardly, she forced her wings from her side - feeling a tinge of pain from how tightly she had wound them up against her bodice. Though, she still didn't know what to feel about it all.

He moved in closer, closer when she had feared he would leave with the information she had managed to spill from her lips. His breath exhaling on her inhale, forcing her to slow her breathing and her heaving sides. But her wings shook, feathers rippling in a manner that might even seem uncomfortable to those who did not know her regular habits to assist in cleaning them. It was a ritual, an attempt to calm herself when she knew she would need to fight. And, though she doubted she would fight now - that she even had the strength to fight anything now - it still served to help steel her nerves. Or… at least she hoped it would.

But, as she explains more of the situation he seems to buck up, head shooting up and away from her as she shudders back, head dropping low and ears flickering backwards. He offers a name and Laedere only shrugs. "Mineself not know of thee name of thine mare." she whispers, swallowing as her heart pounds uncomfortably in her chest. Ardere broke forth just as Einarr spoke her name, though, and flickered before him - giving weird clicking noises in the process. He snorted, saying Ardere was not a slave, that she was happy and then asked what Laedere said back.

She shudders, eyes trained on the ground - even as Ardere splashes water onto her, trying to get her to ease up. "Mineself inquired - asked, mine apologies - what 'sick fuck'… meant…" she whispered, voice cracking as her mind struggled. "Mineself assumes tis bad… She doth not offer response before shouting about enslavement… Mineself said I shan't ever do such a thing… that mineself twas only… trying? to care for Ardere as thine of God of Earth instructed…" Tears. Tears actually began to flow now, as he stretched his wings out to cover her. He had said that she would be safe beneath his wings but she felt so foreign in these lands, so undesired.

His head pressed up against her shoulder and any strength she had left to fight the confusion broke. She leaned up against him, let him feel the trembling in her bones as she allowed more words to fall. "She spoke of chaining… to mine soul… That mineself would… force Ardere into battles… battles with no good outcome…" She swallows, eyes forced shut. Ardere finally emerges completely from the water, deciding that it was more important to be beside her rather than playing. And, then, curls up against Einarr and Laedere, trying to click comfort and send comforting images to Laedere. "Ye don't possess one…" she whispers, choking on the words, "She hath no animal either…" Every inch of her feels like it's on fire, like it doesn't fit anymore. "Perhaps mineself twas never meant to fit in… but mineself hath no where else to go. Mineself doth not fly… mineself hath tis animal that mineself tis 'pparently forcing to stay with mineself. Aye. Tis doomed to be thine abomination of thine Throat…"

Would he understand those last words? She didn't know how else to phrase it. She didn't know what to do…

As Einarr listened to the woman's distressed words, a deepset ire rose like bile in the back of his throat. It was the place of no one to yell at, threaten, and rub dirt in the name of another member of the Dragon's Throat. The description she gave of her attacker was easy enough to Einarr to pinpoint who it was, and the decision made his stomach turn. He had not thought their head warrior to be so childish and stupid. The Mother of Companions was nothing but an irritable bully, he decided, a stomp of his hoof sending the message of his discomfort at Laedere's recount of what happened. An angry snort left his muzzle and his feathers bristled. The stallion's face hardened and twisted into a gruesome grimace of anger and he gnashed at the air a moment before speaking.

"Laedere not listen to Ampere lies. Understand me? Laedere take care of Ardere with love and kindness. No slavery. No hatred." It was clear the stallion was vehement, and with the rise in volume of his voice so did the heat of his body. "Sick fuck mean Laedere worthless -- it a LIE!" Einarr chest puffed and he backed away from the flightless woman. Muscles beneath inky skin tightened as the stallion reared, cloven hooves slicing into the air. Massive wings upon a strong back snapped open, and Einarr released a roar of his rage. "No one treat herdmates like that. Einarr see end to it!" He called into the desert wind, voice ringing with his bellowing anger.

Landing, Einarr let his red-brown eyes shift to the broken woman's companion. A raging heart pumped red hot blood through his mortal veins, pulsating with the reverberating rage he felt deep within his core. A companionship was not a slave bond, it as a gift of life. It was granted directly by gods, and only heightened the quality of life for both parties involved. The bloodrider himself yearned for a companion to share his soul and mind.
