WE HELD TOGETHER THE FRAGILE SKY TO KEEP OUR WAY OF LIFE

Once more the girl left her home in the Edge. Once more she went, without telling mother. This time, however, she wasn't entirely alone. She had Petyr, her brightly colored baby bird. Though he is still small as of yet, and not ready or able to fly so his usefulness in an attack or any other dangerous situation would be... well, nonexistent. More likely than not, should anything happen, she would have to save him as well as herself. But that isn't the point. The point is that she isn't alone and this time she has a destination in mind. A place she's always wanted to revisit after that whole mess with the Earth God and the... what was it called? The Ark? The brown and white girl sets off, stepping over the broken shards of glass at the border of her home then aims herself south and east.

When she came across the first leg of the stream cutting through the meadow, she knew she was heading in the right direction. Her memories of this place are still fairly strong. Crossing the stream, she picks her way through the meadow until she finds the location where the ark had been. It seems ages ago now, as though she were more than a few seasons old now. After a moment of replaying the many happy memories that came to her, she turns herself around so that she is facing due south. With an encouraging chirp from Petyr, she continues forward with purpose and direction. The landscape shifts and changes, going from green to something more barren. Everything is exactly how she remembers it to be. Nothing has changed here.

Following the path she'd taken back when the earth god had given everyone a bucket to fill with water, she quickly and easily found the mouth of the cave once more. Practically grinning with pride at having found it once again, she moves forward only to slide and stumble gracelessly down the wet and rocky slope. Entering the first room, the main room, she is immediately struck by the warmth and the subtle glow from the wall of lava. The lava does little to fight the darkness of the cave, so the filly simply stands - teal eyes transfixed on the odd 'wall' - if one could even call it that.

I'm like a prayer you whisper from your window to the world
_______________________________________

Mother wandered a lot. Every now and then the black mare simply left and went off somewhere, rarely giving a reason why. Sometimes Erthë was left behind with her father, but it also happened that she was brought along when the trip was expected to take a while. Slowly but surely the world expanded beneath her feet. Mile after mile was added to the borders of her perception, time and time again her views on what was normal, right and familiar forced to change. From knowing nothing but the vast, windswept fields of the northern steppe they had traveled east, over high mountains and steep vales, into deep forests and across rivers filled to the brim with rushing water. They climbed and balanced on steep rock ledges, ran as fast as they could across wide-stretched fields painted in vivid spring colors, and Erthë swam for the first time in an ice cold pool lined with red rocks with Shadow watching over her, laughing to the rhythm of the daughter's clattering teeth.

The further south they went the warmer it became. The cold-blooded filly quickly discovered that she very much preferred the icy expanse in the north. She was not fond of sweating, and when the sun raised the temperature to twice that of your own towards the peak of the day it was pretty much all you did.

But she did like the vivid colors. The red of the rocks, the bright spring green grass that hid flowers so bright they made her eyes water, the vast blue arch of the sky revolving high above her head... And she loved the rain that fell at night, treasured each precious droplet that tinkled its mournful melody against leaf and branch, rock and stream and pattered against her back. Some times after a shower had passed her coat was covered in frost where the water had frozen. When the sun returned it vaporized, spreading a thin, fine mist into the air along with her clouding breath.

Ah, and the stars. She never knew them to be so big and bright, or the moon so close. If only she had been able to fly, maybe she could reach out and touch them.

It wasn't only fun and games though. Shadow was careful and took few risks, but they still had nasty encounters with predators. Erthë particularly remembered the meeting with the pack of timber wolves in the deep forests, their gleaming eyes as they circled and watched, weighing the strength of the mare and the cost of a meal against the treat of a feast... They had been lucky to escape that time.

Sometimes it grew downright dull too. After walking through the same unchanging landscape for several days even a very patient foal grew restless, and Erthë's was mercurial, as fleeting as summer shudders.

"Don't go too far" the shadow mare reminded absently as the filly wandered off, her focus on everything but the grass on the ground. How could her mother eat so much all the time?

"No mom" she replied automatically - but what point was there in adventures if your mother remained within shouting distance? Still, Erthë really did intend to be obedient when she skipped off into the tall, swaying grasses. She just wanted to move around, dance a little, flap her wings and feel the muscles in her shoulders develop from day to day.

She definitely didn't count on there to be a hole in the ground. When her cloves suddenly met with nothing but air she gave off a little squeak and tumbled down into darkness, rolling and skidding down the steep path until she landed unceremoniously in a pile at the bottom. For the longest time she simply lay there, dizzy and shocked and terrified to discover that something was broken. When seconds, minutes, years probably, passed and no pain set in however, she began the process of untangling limbs and looked around, wide eyed and suddenly quite small.

It was dark. It was strange. Mother was nowhere to be seen and the blue spring sky had been replaced by a rough stone sealing. On one side the darkness deepened into pitch-black tunnels leading into the bowels of the earth, and on the other a red glow radiated both light and heat and turned a figure into a black, ominous looking silhouette. Almost, but not quite horselike, and the shadows it cast were long and threatening, wavering slightly back and forth.

Her lips began to tremble, out of shock or fear - she wasn't sure which.

WE HELD TOGETHER THE FRAGILE SKY TO KEEP OUR WAY OF LIFE

Naerys' world would still be relatively small if it were entirely up to mother. The Edge is, of course, the most familiar though when the Earth God had called to bring them all together she ventured into the Thistle Meadow, down to the caves, and the lands in between. Since then, her own world expanded to include the ancient Rotunda and the forests east of the Edge consisting of the deep forest and the threshold. The caves were of a particular interest to her, however. Her time in them had been brief and her curiosity ran high. She'd heard of the story behind their existence, knew mother felt uncomfortable with them and that father had spent some time inside in solitude but she longs to explore every ounce of their depths - to shine light into the darkness. She doesn't sneak out of her home or away from her mother, she just... neglects to let her know where exactly she's going. Weaning means unabashed freedom for the chocolate and white filly.

The further south she traveled the stronger the sun felt against the darker portions of her coat, causing her wings to relax at her sides - folded loosely to allow the breeze to filter through and cool off her skin. She welcomes the heat, though. The warmth finally thawing Frostfall's chill in the marrow of her bones. For the first time, it finally felt like spring. Her teal eyes welcomed the vivid colors of the landscape, the brighter flowers mingling comfortably with the purple and white passionflowers popping up everywhere her hooves touch. The sky above her seemed to open, stretching further than it ever did further north. Back home in the Edge, the sky is obscured by the persistent mist blanketing much of the territory. The mist is home to her, as it likely always would be, but that does not mean her mind and heart won't wander.

And wander she did.

In the main room of the caves, the girl found herself entranced by the lava flowing beneath a thick, glass-like surface. It is a rather peculiar sight, to be sure; one that had managed to escape her notice entirely the first time she ventured inside. The rocky floor is dark and rough, matching the walls surrounding the molten wall. A sudden thud behind her startled her back into awareness, a squeak involuntarily escaping her lips. Her entire body jolts, sending her skittering forward a few steps with her head raised, eyes wide and ears plastered against her skull. The filly successfully resists the urge to unfold her wings, remembering the small bird upon her shoulders as well as the fact that she's below the surface. Flying, for all intents and purposes, would be useless here. A thought that hadn't really entered her mind before now. Cautiously, she turns herself around - each step more agonizing than the last until finally she spies a pale figure on the ground.

Naerys' heart flutters frantically in her chest, and though her nostrils flare with every breath it takes her several moments to realize what stands between her and the only exit to safety. Before it dawns on her, though, her imagination runs wild - dreaming up every bad thing it possibly could and for the briefest of moments, she fears for her life. The girl breathes a heavy sigh of relief when she notices the pale figure is, in fact, a foal with wings and horns. Petyr, the small and fluffy green bird, remains silent on her back; the boy has enough sense to know when to keep his beak shut. Grateful for his silence, Naerys allows her teal eyes to scan over the other filly for the briefest of moments. "Hey..." she begins, her voice soft; betraying her youth. "you all right?" she asks. Despite the wall of lava, the darkness in the cave is enough to hide the smaller details. Completely missing the other filly's quivering lips, Naerys takes a couple steps forward. "I'm Naerys." she offers warmly, glad that - for once - she wasn't surrounded by adults. The Edge isn't exactly bursting with foals for her to play with, goodness knows. Her bright teal eyes watch the other filly with a light but friendly curiosity.

I'm like a prayer you whisper from your window to the world

The shadow startled, turned, and then it spoke. Did shadows usually do that? Misty green eyes were wide and clogged with unshed tears and leaking black tar, but though her heart beat fit to burst in the chest she forced herself to look closer at the figure. Come to think of it, wasn't it actually more brown than black? And there were lighter patches, tinted with orange and black but probably white originally... A shadow with colors? Granted, she had seen many things that didn't make sense in her short life, but nothing as weird as this.

The shadow introduced itself as Naerys. Suddenly becoming aware of her own graceless sprawling on the stone floor, the winged filly quickly got to her feet and gazed hesitantly between the Naerys and the sloping path she had fallen down. Should she answer, or just run?

Ah, but. She hadn't faced two gods in combat and survived only to become a coward. Picking up the pieces of her own fractured courage she wound the long tail tightly around a leg and nodded shyly, daring a slight step forward to get a better look at the dark figure.

"Yeah.. I mean, uhm... yes, I'm fine. Thank you. I'm Erthë." Geez girl, eloquent much. At least she managed to say her own name without stuttering this time. Not much of a victory, but it would have to do.

"Wh-what is this place?" Not much better, but at least the awe as she looked around was real. The place was huge, the ceiling disappearing up amidst thick shadows and the corners dim and obscure as the passages that trailed off to elsewhere. It was easy to forget herself and the stranger that was with her, but all the thought of shadows brought her back to reality with a snap, a swift jump backwards and the fierce, suspicious glare of one who had seen too much for their age.

"Hey, you're not actually a shadow, are you? Because if you're one of them Wolf God clones then... then... well I've dealt with you lot before and I'm not scared!"

Yet for all the confidence in her childishly shrill voice, both dainty cloves and sneaky glances had begun a swift search for something to use as a weapon. It wasn't that she was afraid or anything, but no matter how she looked at it the Naerys was much bigger than herself, and her stubby porcelain horns were clearly not intended for offensive use. The black claw bounced and jangled on its bronze chain around her neck as though to tempt her to use it, but Erthë ignored it. No way would she use that; the fang had probably tasted too much blood already.

She steeled herself for the worst and drew a long, slow breath, careful so that she would not trigger another coughing fit. This was definitely neither the time nor place to show weakness...

WE HELD TOGETHER THE FRAGILE SKY TO KEEP OUR WAY OF LIFE

The pale filly remains sprawled on the stone floor for several more moments before scrambling to place her hooves beneath her. But an awkward silence continues to hang heavy in the air of the dank cave, yet Naerys is far from dissuaded. She simply stands, waiting patiently; completely unaware of the girl's misunderstanding of who she is or, rather, what she is. She couldn't know that the younger girl thought she was some creepy shadow; a being of darkness that might attempt to harm her. Naerys has the added advantage of greater light levels illuminating the smaller filly; an advantage that, unknown to her, the other doesn't have. That aside, she'd also been in the darkness long enough for her eyes to adjust; granting her better, more clear vision even in this perpetually dark world hidden under the earth's crust. Instead, the two are locked in an odd battle of wills; vivid eyes peering at each other with curiosity and suspicion. Unfortunately for the pale filly, Naerys has all the time in the world - at least, she thinks she does. There would come a point when either her mother or her aunt would come looking for her; there is no doubt in her mind of that. No matter how embarrassing it might be.

Finally, after several long moments (though, honestly, not as long as her young mind wants to believe) the filly makes a very small move towards her, a single cautious step, before her voice rings clear. A small smile curves her lips at Erthë's words, teal eyes shining bright with friendliness and warmth. "Nice to meet you, Erthë." and, almost as an afterthought. "I'm glad you're all right." And every bit of it is genuine.

Erthë's question, though, is a good one. "Mama says that these caves were once a... sanctuary, I guess. An awful black sickness swept over all of Helovia and infected a bunch of them. Everyone else came here to live in safety until everything was safe again." she answers excitedly, remembering the tales her mother told her on those cold frostfall nights, huddled in closely together for warmth. "I don't think they like to come here anymore." she adds with a small but fleeting frown. Goodness knows mother sure didn't enjoy these caves. Naerys, on the other hand, hadn't been born then and as a result she simply found them fascinating. Had she been trapped down here for months, she might feel differently.

Suddenly the pale filly jumps back, suspicion written across her face. Her outburst is sudden and throws Naerys off guard. Her voice is shrill and puffed up with a confidence often used to overshadow fear (not that Naerys knows much about that, yet). Puzzled, Naerys furrows her brow as she gazes at the young girl. "Wait! I... what?!" she asks, her own voice taking on more of a shrill note so common in youth. The girl snorts defiantly, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I am NOT a shadow." Naerys huffs, her tender youthful emotions getting the better of her. "I'm just a filly." she adds, her voice suddenly softer, a hint of sadness clinging to her tone. She wanted to step forward, to move herself more into the light and prove to the pale filly that she is what she says she is but fear holds her in place; fear that the girl would turn tail and run away if Naerys so much as moved towards her. Instead, the girl simply sighs lowering her head and shifting her teal eyes to stare at the stone floor beneath her hooves.

I'm like a prayer you whisper from your window to the world

Erthë glared suspiciously at the girl for a few moments longer, then relaxed and gave her a radiant smile. The transformation from wary readiness to bubbling excitement was instantaneous. Perhaps it would have been better to keep suspecting a little while longer, but the dual horned girl was innocent and trusting so if someone said something, she saw no reason to disbelieve them.

"Oh, good!" she sighed, clearly relieved. "It would have been awful if you had been, they were horrible!"

Already curiosity was taking over from shock and fright. This was a completely new world to the girl and she absorbed every little detail with relish. Gaping as she came close enough to the quartz window to see what lay on the other side she let out a slow, awed 'woooow'.

"It's so cool" she breathed. "Where do those paths go? That sickness, it's nothing like this one, is it?"

Because the liquid that oozed from every orifice was decidedly black, and the coughs and sniffles and muffled sound in her ears was persistent and definitely something one would hide to get away from. Erthë kept a slight distance from the other girl, like mother had instructed, so that she wouldn't give the cooties to her too - though whether it worked was another question.

Now, she probably should have tried to climb back up the steep slope again. Mother would get worried before long, and she would get hungry and it looked like a difficult climb. But outside was boring compared to this hidden world, and she was dying to explore.

"Hey, want to play something?" she asked, practically bouncing where she stood. What were bruises and rattling coughs when there was another girl there, almost her age and definitely fun looking?

Hold on to me because I'm a little unsteady

The air between them shifted quickly - swinging from suspicious and distrusting to curious and friendly in a matter of seconds. It isn't surprising, with youth comes an innate readiness to trust. Perhaps it is their innocence, their lack of experience with the propensity of lies that so frequently drip like venom from the lips. Whatever the case may be, the pale filly is safe with Naerys. Her innocence is untainted by the darker shadows of life, leaving little more than the truth to flow from her young brain to her mouth. The connection is, currently, direct - quite possibly the most direct it would ever be. The smaller filly's relief mirrors onto the chocolate painted filly - their erratic emotions reflecting on each other and influencing their behavior.

Curiosity pulls at the girl as the pale one visibly relaxes in her presence. "What made you think I could have been one of those... Wolf God clones?" she asks, the words falling readily and easily from her dark lips. The question is nothing short of blunt, though there is no harshness to it. Naerys isn't angry with the girl for her response, just curious. "I mean... it is dark down here... so I understand the shadow confusion, I guess." she adds with the barest hint of a shrug.

But the pale girl doesn't stay still for long, within moments she's on the move. She shifts to gaze through the quartz window at the lava flowing behind it and the girl's drawn out 'wow' is enough to make the older girl smile. "There's a whole bunch more rooms down here. The paths lead to them. There's a room that glows, one filled with crystals, and even one with a waterfall." the excitement in her voice is temporarily subdued, instead she sounds like the informative big sister without the annoying know-it-all attitude. Naerys had been to the falls once before and it was a spectacular sight to see. Waterfalls above ground are numerous enough to see but to see one below ground - dark, hidden, and loud - well... it's something unique.

In all of her excitement over the caves, it took Naerys a few moments to acknowledge the girl's second question. When she finally did, her smile immediately fades to a frown and her teal eyes shift to the younger one's pale face. "No, I don't think so." she admits, pausing for only a moment. "Momma said daddy caught it trying to protect her from one of the infected. She said it changed him completely - he'd lost all color, his feathers were rotting from his wings and he was so thin she could see his bones." Her voice shifts and changes as she speaks, adding emphasis in all the right places for dramatic effect. "He got better though, they discovered one of the rooms down here held the cure." she adds matter-of-factly.

Naerys didn't even realize she'd begun to wander along the walls of the cave, trailing her soft muzzle near the rough, dark stone surface. So when she fell silent, her change in position almost startled her - almost. Somehow she managed to keep her cool and with a renewed, playful smile the girl inched towards one of the paths. Looking back at the pale girl. "Well... we could pretend we're treasure hunters." she offers, longing to delve into the depths of the strange network of caves. "Come on." she beckons gently, hardly even making an attempt to resist her rebellious streak.

I'm like a prayer you whisper from your window to the world

"Yeah, it was just, I only saw a shadow and you looked like you were kinda glowing with all that light and stuff, and those wolf clones were dark and glowwy too."

She replied rather distractedly, already focusing more on the surroundings than on talking. Peeking curiously down each path in turn, Erthë hummed and nodded as Naerys explained about the rooms on the other end, feet itching to explore. The long, slender tail slithered excitedly around the hocks as she tripped about, mother forgotten for this amazing new place and the friend she'd found; a friend that knew a lot more than Erthë did.

"Oh, that's good. I wouldn't want to catch that... also I hope you won't catch this, it's pretty icky too. The world looks strange with this goo in the eyes, things start to glow and stuff!"

All thought of sickness and monsters disappeared at the suggestion of the game however. With an excited squeal the pale hybrid skipped after Naerys down one of the path, as eager as she was fearless now that she had been careful and good like momma told her to be.

It was easily the most fun she'd had in weeks. Together they explored the many caverns and took it in turn to find treasures; glowing plants and flowers, interesting rocks and crevices and a whole room filled with what Erthë swore had to be diamonds, because they sparkled so prettily. Time went by much too quickly, and it wasn't until her stomach gave up an almighty growl that she realized how long she must have been down there in the caves.

"I think I need to go soon" she said, rather reluctantly interrupting the game. "Momma will be worried if I stay away much longer, and she nags so much when she's upset. What about you? Are you staying here or do you want to go together?"

Eying their pile of treasures longingly, she dropped the last glimmering rock onto it and eyed Naerys, waiting to hear her reply before starting to walk back towards the first cave and the way out.
