Murtagh couldn’t really remember if he was allowed to be here, unsupervised, but he was pretty sure either Papa or Mammina or one of the bears would come find him if he wandered too far. He didn’t mean to wander too far, you know. He liked his family, he enjoyed being close to them and the protection and love they provided him. He did not want to escape nor did he want them to experience any sort of worry that his absence might cause. He simply… wanted to explore. And the frozen waterfalls that surrounded his home were the perfect place to start this morning.

He might have felt more guilty if he wasn’t working under the constant assumption that someone was following him, or just keeping an eye on him. It was always safest - there were eight eyes present at his birth and eight eyes that could keep tabs on the little colt. Not including the extended family and, well, Murtagh wasn’t even sure he could keep those faces straight!

A couple days ago, Murtagh had taken on the idea that his own bear cub was waiting somewhere to be found, and that when he found it he would have someone his size that he could play and explore with. Papas and Mamminas were all well and good, you know, but they were just so big.

So he was on the hunt! Whether it was another foal or his bear cub that he found, there was a mission and he chose to accept it.

Of course, there were a great many distractions along the way. He took a roundabout path to get to the big waterfall he liked the best, sticking to the trees and anywhere that provided some protection from the Frostfall breeze that was stirring through the valley today. Overhead, the sky was a pale periwinkle, the sun finally starting to peak above the rocky ledges that protected them. Well, he had his own theories on what - or who - really protected the herd but he’d let the rocks think that they were lending a hand. Lavender eyes glanced on some of the ones to his left as he trotted along through the snow, giving them a pitying look.

Finally, his path lead to the waterfall and he stopped right at the edge of the frozen water, examining both it and the great frozen structure of once-cascading water. It wasn’t very likely that his bear cub was hidden in there, unless it was like Nevoso and preferred the ice and snow where he could blend in.

Which of the great bears would his cub be like?

While he thought about it, one curious hoof reached out to touch the surface of the ice ever-so-gently, before recoiling quickly. Huh. It seemed to hold pretty well, but it made a scary sound when it creaked! He really hoped there was no bear cub hiding in the waterfall because he wasn't even sure he could get there!

It was a strange thing for Ktulu and she found herself fascinated that she loved the little colt that she and Lakota had been gifted with the same ferocity that she'd loved Hototo and Ranjiri. After Hototo's death she'd been terrified that she would be unable to love the child that Lakota had wanted so desperately, but she found herself constantly watching him even when he was curled up on the ground beside her fast asleep. Each rise and fall of his tiny chest helped to mend her fractured heart and, though she knew she would never be the same, he was healing her. As much as she wanted to spend the entire night standing there watching him while he and Lakota slept she had other duties to attend to that often drew her away from the small family that she had built. As she stepped away from them Eytan moved to follow behind her only to stop when his bonded glanced at him and shook her head. "Stay and watch them." She instructed as she headed toward the border to start her nightly patrol.

It was several hours later when the sun was beginning to rise that she was alerted that her son had awoken and was sneaking away from a snoozing Lakota and Aodaun. "I'm coming, but follow him." The dark mare said through the mental connection with her companion. "Stay hidden unless you think he'll get himself in trouble. Keep me updated on where you are." As she made her way back to where Lakota had been left sleeping she would get glimpses of the places that Eytan was following Murtagh through. A mixture of emotions made Ktulu frown as she moved quietly past her mate and her companion. She was glad that her son showed a sense of adventure, wary of what she perceived to be a desire for independence that came too soon, and worried that he would think himself strong enough to go off on his own because what if he got hurt? She'd never be able to forgive herself if she allowed Murtagh to be injured or ... or killed.

Ktulu snorted and began to move faster as Eytan flashed her a glimpse of the frozen waterfall. It may have been the dead of winter and the water frozen, but she never trusted ice. One wrong step could result in an injured leg or cracked ice that would give way and send you plunging into the frigid water just below. Her hooves pounded against the ground and snow seemed to explode behind her and she arrived just in time to see her son touch the ice with his hoof then recoil. She skidded to a stop, sending a wave of snow forward and away from her.

"Murtagh!" She barked out her child's name and as she stood there Eytan finally revealed himself. "What are you doing? Get away from there."

Murtagh jumped back from the ice when he heard his Papa’s bark telling him to do so, moving so quickly it was like he received a shock from the ice. Busted! He spun around to see the pair, because of course "Mama" was there too. He was never too far from Papa’s side. The mistake that the young colt had made when he first laid eyes on that fuzzy face had grown into an affectionate nickname. It was his great fortune to be born into a family where he had eight pairs of eyes to watch him wherever he went. He did not begrudge the attention at all, nor the knowledge that he was often followed by a bear if one of his parents could not accompany him on his journeys. He often assumed that one of them were lurking if they were not obviously trailing him.

Trotting the few steps that took him to stand before Ktulu, he looked at her with exasperation. “But Papa I wasn’t going to go any further.” Although he was sure that she would know that he was in fact planning on going at least a little further. He always wanted to go just a little bit deeper than he should.

Looking past her, he gave the grizzly bear a exaggerated sour face by way of greeting - good naturedly sticking out his tongue as he spoke his accusation. “You ratted me out didn’t you, Mama?”

But now, his search interrupted, he at least owed Ktulu an explanation for what he was doing over here. A quick glance back at the frozen waterfall before he dismissed it with a shrug. It wasn’t really somewhere he felt the need to check. Lavender eyes looked up at his Papa with reverence as he explained his purpose, perhaps she would be able to help him out! “I’m hunting for my bear cub. You and Mammina have one... Do you think she’s around here somewhere?” He was convinced that she got lost on her way to him, convinced that all he needed to do was find her and their family would be complete.

Even though Murtagh assured her that he wasn't going to go any further it didn't make the look on Ktulu's face any less stern. It only made her narrow her eyes on the colt because she knew he was lying. He was too much like her in wanting to be independent at such a young age and go on adventures. Always wanting to push the envelope just a little but farther to see just how much he could get away with. "I was a foal once, too." She said as she eyed her son. 'You can't fool me.'

"You ratted me out didn't you, Mama?"

Ktulu's head turned from her son to her companion who gave the foal a sheepish look because he had ratted Murtagh out. The bear grumbled and flopped down on the snowy ground, suddenly going still as he played dead. It made Ktulu roll her eyes, but she still grinned as she turned her head back to Murtagh. "You're lucky he did." She said. "Yeah, you're still in the Falls but you still shouldn't wander off on your own." Lakota would just die if anything happened to Murtagh.

Before she could even ask why he had wandered off on his own she got an explanation and it made Ktulu's heart warm quite a bit. Her little boy wanted a bear just like his Mammina and Papa and he was out searching for one. She leaned down and ruffled his fuzzy forelock, smiling as she did so. "Murty..." She murmured his name as she lifted her head. "Your bear will find you when the time is right."

A giggle escaped the foal at Papa’s ridiculous attempt at playing dead, any small bit of annoyance there might have been disappearing quickly. It was hard to be annoyed that he had two parents and two companions that cared about him enough to stalk him.

He dutifully stopped laughing when Ktulu went on to say that he shouldn’t wander off on his own, even in the Falls. “I’m sorry, Papa, I won’t do it again.” And he meant it, really really meant it. Murtagh hated the worry in her and Mammina’s voice and eyes whenever they caught him doing something that he shouldn’t. As much as he wanted to explore, it really wasn’t worth the idea of hurting either of them. He loved it when his mothers were smiling and didn’t like the feeling that came when he knew that he was the one that had caused them to frown.

He was learning to guess ahead of time what he should not to but there had been a fair bit of trial-and-error getting to this point. Don’t wander off alone, even in the Falls, don’t walk on ice, don’t lick the ice, the safest snow to eat is white. There were a lot of rules and they were filling up his young brain but he was pretty sure he was getting the hang of it now. All he had to do was figure out what was dangerous before he actually did it - which was easier said than done. A little bit of danger just made things so much more interesting.

He stepped into her touch and bumped his head against her shoulder affectionately as she said his bear would find him when the time was right. “But when?” Everything past tomorrow felt like too long for the colt. He wanted to find his bear cub now. “When did Papa find you?”
