RIFT

His hooves sunk slightly into the soft soil that gathered beneath the trees, his breathing slow and calm. According to the sweet child tucked securely beneath his wing, the small troupe were currently picking their way about the border of the World's Edge. The journey had been a pleasant one, the quartet of equines with their two companions moving over the terrain in an easy silence. Rift found that the borderlands surrounding the Edge were beautiful and surprisingly similar to the Amarinthine Passage in which he had stumbled upon Mitzi.

At the though of the pink and ebony painted mare, Rift's heart sunk; where was she? If she returned to the Veldt and found him gone, would she think he had abandoned her? Would she move on to another stallion? His head drooped at the thought. Taking a breath and blinking the mist from his eyes, the scarlet lad reminded himself that the only thing that mattered at this point was Mitzi's happiness and safety. If another could provide that for her, and as long as his beloved kestrel still smiles, he would live with gratitude in every breath.

As the troupe slowed to a stop, Rift waited quietly as a cool breeze toyed with his mane. Was there some sort of signal that Naerys would cast into the sky to draw out her family? A small seed of anxiety planted itself in the heart of the stallion as he realized how their small party may look to a member of the Edge. Would they think Naerys had been kidnapped by the foreigners? How would they react to a child of their herd snuggled up beneath a stranger's wing?

He shifted ever so slightly, though he did not pull away from Naerys; he had made the decision to get her home safely, and if that caused him to be pegged as a foreign scoundrel, so be it.

At least scoundrel sounded better than coward.

It was really by chance that she came across the grouping, and quite the group it was. Perhaps it was a group of visitors from another herd? A collection of emissaries? There was little doubt in her mind that someone else from the Ede would come along shortly - a patrol, other curious onlookers. For it was curiosity that drove her closer. Although she had been wandering the Edge border lately it was mostly to keep an eye out for that wandering daughter of hers. Why did it have to be that trait that she inherited from her mother? This stint in the Edge was the longest that Alysanne had ever called a place home and even then she had wandered in and out from time to time.

It was simple curiosity until she recognized the filly that was curled up underneath a stranger’s wing as though it were the most natural thing in the world. Alysanne bristled at the sight, a fierce protectiveness rising within her and the distance between her and the group was covered quickly after that. Her wings were folded tightly to her sides, using the pressure to hold herself together from making a scene over what seemed to be a peaceful procession. She stopped before them, scanning the crowd for any signs of malicious intent and, in her daughter’s face, any sign of distress. There wasn’t any, not now, but there are wild and terrible situations running through her mind and she can’t make them stop no matter how hard her wings press against her side.

When did she get so paranoid? She took a deep breath to calm herself - attempt to calm herself - before greeting them with a smile. “Welcome to the Edge.” Her face was a mask of friendliness that she hoped covers up her fear - she used to enjoy greeting others, meeting strangers, so it was easy to pretend that it was the same. Green eyes shift to her daughter then and her expression softened. “Naerys. Who are your friends?”

Evangeline had spotted Alysanne as she made her way through the Edge's forest and had intended on stopping her and speaking to her about calling a meeting for the healers to discuss recent events and to see who was interested in what they did. There was also that persistent nagging that she'd been unable to heal Erthë legs that she couldn't shake and she thought that maybe Alysanne might have an idea about what was going on. When she finally caught up to the other mare it was only because she'd stopped because there was a group on their doorsteps, one of the group being Alysanne's own daughter under the wing of a stallion that neither of them knew. One whose scent said that he didn't belong to any of the herds.

The orange mare came to stand next to the other Moon Doctor, her green eyes locked on the stallion. Tallis left his place on her back and perched overhead on a tree branch, his black eyes watching the group and his jaws and claws ready to rip at a stallion should his intentions be anything but pure. Alysanne spoke and Eva's gaze slid over to the other mare as she asked her daughter who her friends were, but Evangeline was a mother and she knew what she would be thinking if it were her daughter under the wing of a stranger.

"Why is your wing wrapped around a filly that is neither your herd mate or family?" She asked because Alysanne didn't. Unlike her counterpart she did not bother to hide the suspicion in her voice and her dragon followed up her question with a low hiss.

WE ARE THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE

It should have taken her longer to relax and find comfort in his embrace. Should have but it didn't. Maybe it was the throbbing pain in her head that occasionally sent blood trickling from her ears that was clouding her judgment. But she doesn't think so. She hardly knows the scarlet stallion but he feels safe. So it isn't a surprise when she feels the green bird hopping down her neck, his pale eyes brimming with curiosity as he carefully climbs onto the stallion's wing. Within moments Petyr was no longer touching her. Influenced as much by the bond as by his own intense desire for knowledge, the emerald bird slips carefully and quietly to the stallion's back only to inch his way forward so that he could absentmindedly play with the ends of his crimson mane.

But that was early on in their journey back to the Edge. Naerys could have made it home by herself. She knows the way there but he'd been insistent and with the pounding inside her skull, she found it immensely difficult to find the words to politely refuse. And she was comfortable, warm and protected beneath the shelter of his wing and pressed so gingerly against his side. Everything about it was platonic, like he was the brother she'd never really had. So she moved with him, keeping pace with him as they exited the forest and crossed the fields - only pausing long enough at a willow tree to test Brisa's recommended cure for her intense headache. It failed to provide the girl with any relief and so they resumed their journey to the Edge.

Time flew by much to quickly for her to be content. Each step she took brought her closer to her home and ever closer to the moment she'd have to leave his soothing embrace (and, to be fair, she isn't exactly looking forward to explaining this odd predicament). But as the remnants of the broken wall slide into view, she slows and motions for everyone to stop. She didn't want to risk crossing the wall with so many strangers in tow - especially considering none of them were here to join. Huddled beneath Rift's wing, a soft sigh escapes her lips. "I guess I better go now..." she begins softly, her voice quiet and almost breathy but the words fall halfheartedly from her lips. Instead of moving, the girl finds herself leaning into him.

Cuddled against him, she shifts to press her head into his neck. So when her mother's voice broke the silence, she practically jumped out of her own skin. Naerys quickly adjusts herself to stand straight and tall, her head lowered as she peers up at her mother with widened eyes. "Hi mama." she responds sweetly, innocently despite the anxiety churning in her stomach. Yet, before she could explain another from her herd appeared and, unlike her mother, didn't even try to hide her suspicion. Inwardly the girl groaned. Suddenly her mouth felt dry but she had to say something (before they ripped him a new one) "This is Rift. I met him in the threshold. I.. uh... I offered him a home with us in the Edge but he chose the Throat instead." she speaks quickly, her voice almost pleading. "He wanted to walk me home, to keep me safe. But since he's new, Ranjiri and Laedere offered to follow us, so they could take him to their home in the Throat after making sure that I was safe." She falls silent then, her teal gaze lowering to the purple and white blooms growing around her hooves. Despite it all, though, the girl makes no move to leave Rift's side. The only movement comes from Petyr as he hops his way back to his bonded and settles himself just above her withers and clings to the pale strands at the base of her mane.

The anxiety that permeated his thoughts so thickly drained away at the sound of Naerys' voice and the sensation of the child leaning into his side. Worried expression softening into one of adoration, the lanky youth felt something akin to a paternal affection toward the lass and her curious companion; how could he have chosen to follow Ranjiri and Laedere to the throat when the cherub tucked so carefully beneath his wing existed elsewhere? The likeness she cast of his youngest sister both comforted and terrified him, part of him hoping against all odds that the gods had given him a second chance whilst another piece of his soul feared that Naerys would turn out to be his punishment.

Despite the risks, though, the scarlet stallion found that he could not force himself to abandon the angelic child. No, she deserved good things and he had decided to strive to be something good for her even though they were still considered strangers; she shared enough traits with Avarice to where he couldn't help it.

Just as Rift was about to bend down and tousle the child's forelock, an emerald- eyed mare emerged from the trees, shortly followed by another. The dormant anxiety within his belly awoke and sent shivers racing down his legs as Naerys greeted the black-splashed stranger as her mother. Despite the mare's seemingly friendly greeting, Rift felt his stomach twist in fear; his mother could play at friendliness like the best of them and he knew from experience that a mother's wrath left none standing.

Swallowing thickly at the golden mare's line of questioning, the gangly gent steeled himself and opened his mouth to answer but was cut off by the chiming voice of Naerys. He nodded frantically at her explanation, ruby eyes wide in the face of what he assumed was his demise. Casting a glance toward Naerys and finding that her hooves were covered in blooms, Rift felt a spark of anger; what kind of mother caused her child so much fear that her level of anxiety triggered a sort of passive magic to take over?

He spoke to Naerys' mother first, addressing her with a polite "Ma'am," before beginning, his voice cordial, "What she says is true. Her head began to hurt when she found us in the Threshold, I didn't think that it was a good idea for her to travel all the way home by herself if she was sick or injured."

Eyes sliding toward the golden mare, Rift felt an uncharacteristic level of annoyance rise up within him; who was this mare to cast suspicion onto him and his herdmates? Who was she to take the place of Naerys' own mother in her line of questioning? Rift fought to keep the irritation out of his voice as he replied, "She was not feeling well. Flowers had burst forth beneath her hooves and she had covered her face with her wing, I am no healer, miss. The only thing I could do is offer my support to the girl. No one deserves to feel alone, especially when they are in pain. I would hope you can understand that."

He pushed away the urge to huff at the golden mare, reminding himself that she was only concerned for the well being of Naerys. Try as he might, though, he could not help but find her haughty suspicion offensive.

Alysanne was grateful for Evangeline, an emotion that she was growing more and more accustomed to. The presence of the chestnut mare did wonders to sooth her nerves while at the same time fanning the righteous fire that burned beneath her surface. The words that came from her fellow Moon Doctor, her friend, echoed the thoughts in her own mind and made Alysanne feel as though they were warranted. She might have done the same thing if their roles were reversed - finding the strength to speak up rather than maintain a false calm appearance if a stranger’s wings were around one of Evangeline’s children. She would raise hell for the foals of her friends as much as she would her own. Only fear differed - the fear that something would happen to Naerys was strong enough to stay her tongue.

It would not fade, not until the group dispersed. Not until her daughter was safe.

The filly had such wandering tendencies and it broke Alysanne’s heart to see her returned to her in such a fashion. First the explanation of Naerys and then Rift filter through her ears but her blazing green eyes are locked on her daughter. Better to feel the fire of the anger than the crippling sadness that it was masking. How often did Naerys leave the Edge without her knowledge? What condition would she be in next time, or the one after that? Not everyone in Helovia was as ‘kind’ as the gathering before her - if their stories were to believed.

His made little sense, though. So far as Alysanne knew, her daughter’s magic to grow flowers at the touch of her hooves on soil had no connection to any distress. It simply happened - she remembered watching a laughing girl dance and spin as she watched the blooms follow her as she raced across the forest. If she had known his thoughts, known that he blamed her for Naerys’ distress, the fragile calm exterior would have shattered completely. Visitors from the Throat or not - Alysanne would have held nothing back.

She didn’t like how he explained things, either way. As if she would have let Naerys leave the Edge if she had known that she was sick. “We’re healers. Th… thank you for bringing her to the Edge.” Her manners are steely and she can’t soften them no matter how hard she tried. Her focus briefly flickered to Rift but it was back on Naerys - the fire present but fading as she scanned the girl for injuries. It was difficult with the space between them but short of whacking Rift in the face with her wings, she needed to wait until her daughter came forward. “Where does it hurt, Nae?”

The stallion had a point that it wasn't a good idea for Naerys to travel all the way home from the Threshold by herself, but if she had been it pain it had not been a good idea for her to go there in the first place, but for now Evangeline held her tongue. She was waiting for Alysanne to say something, to reprimand her daughter for wandering off when she wasn't feeling well, to tell the stallion to finally take his wing from around her child. When her partner failed to do so Eva cast a glance at the black and white mare, but her attention was quickly drawn back to the stranger and his irritated tone that he seemed to be trying to hide. While Evangeline was usually mild mannered and polite she was in no mood to put up with disrespect from him.

"Your concern is appreciated." Evangeline said flatly. "But if Naerys were sick or in pain she never should have left the Edge without her mother or I tending to her ailments." She shot a pointed look at the filly before her emerald eyes shifted back to the irritated stallion. She silently dared him to argue with her because she knew she was right and she knew that Alysanne would back her up on what she'd said. But there was one thing that the stranger had said that struck a chord with her. "No one deserves to be alone, especially when they are in pain." She could understand it intimately, but she would not let her understanding cloud her view of the situation at hand.

Alysanne's movement drew her attention away from Rift and she watched as the other healer tried to tend to her daughter. "It would be far easier for Alysanne to tend to her daughter if you removed your wing and stepped aside." As she spoke Tallis moved from where he had been perched in the trees back to his bonded's back and as he did so he blew a plume of smoke from his mouth as a warning to the stranger to not overstep his boundaries. "You've done what you came here to do, now let us do our jobs." she said dismissively because she was done with self-righteous, do-good stallions who wanted everyone to applaud them for doing the right thing.

Everything had been perfect and easy with his wing draped over her, shielding her from nothing and everything all at once. It didn't matter that they'd only just met or that she knew so little of him (and he so little of her). The fact is, she felt better in his embrace. Somehow, tucked safely against him, the girl could forget the persistent pounding in her skull. She could forget the random, occasional bit of blood trickling from her ears. Everything had been wonderful, until her mother and Evangeline showed up.

The tension in the air is palpable and though her initial reaction is one of anxiety and frantic explanations, her emotions take a rather quick turn towards anger. The girl isn't angry with her mother, she couldn't be. Despite the displeasure she knew bubbled just beneath her mother's stoic surface, the mare remained polite - despite the hardened edge to her words. Alysanne, at least, had the right to be upset. Yet as the tension pulses and grows around the small gathering, the pain in her head is brought back to the forefront of her focus. Once more everything seems too bright and their voices too loud. Her nostrils flare and for a second she squeezes her eyes shut. The girl fights the desire to shift and bury her head beneath Rift's wing, knowing that would only escalate the problem. But as her eyes open once more, she can feel the prickling heat of moisture welling in her eyelids. They threaten to spill past her long lashes, overflowing and trickling down her cheeks but with a few deep breaths she holds them back.

She remains quiet for a moment, allowing everyone else to speak their piece. She could feel the heat of her mother and Evangeline's stares. It isn't until Evangeline speaks again that she ceases to simply accept her fate. The orange mare's words are enough to light a fire behind the girl's eyes extending to a seething anger smoldering in her gut. Naerys works hard to remain stoic, despite the slight darkening of her teal orbs as she pins the orange mare with a quietly burning stare. "Had I been sick or injured before I left I wouldn't have gone anywhere." Her voice remains respectful despite the newfound firmness. And she wouldn't have. She may be young but she isn't so lacking in intelligence that she'd leave when her own mother had healing magic. She had been perfectly healthy when she left but she also hadn't gone straight to the threshold. No, she left to explore further south in Helovia, mapping her home country from the air until she came across a strangely large gathering that, upon closer inspection, the girl quickly discovered was a battle of sorts. Mauja had been there, as had Erthe and many others but the problems didn't start until after the massive, foreign creature was destroyed.

That was when the pain started. It had been awful, debilitating in its own right, and it threw her off course when she tried to return home.

But would they even believe her if she told them? What was the point in trying when so many seemed to operate with the theory that you were guilty until proven innocent? Children are innately innocent creatures - for good and for ill. "Do not judge so harshly of what you do not fully understand." but that is all she's willing to divulge. None of them knew the whole story and unless they cease their negative and pessimistic behavior, she's not about to explain it further. With a final pointed look at the orange mare, her gaze shifts to her mother briefly before returning to Rift. "The flowers always grow. They aren't tied to my emotions, they just... they're tied to me, the connection of my hooves with the ground." she explains, her voice softer again, more warm and friendly. "I'm alright now, Rift. It's okay. Thank you for walking me home, I promise I'll come visit you." she adds sweetly and with a soft smile - despite the throbbing in her skull. She shifts forward enough to touch the tip of her muzzle to his cheek. She lingers for a moment, her breath a warm yet soft caress, before she slips out from beneath his wing and moves to her mother. The girl allows one last glance over her shoulder, one last smile to the brotherly stallion. Then, deliberately ignoring Evangeline, the girl refocuses on her mother. "It's just my head..." she almost murmurs and with a soft sigh the girl lowers her head and leans forward, attempting to press her face into her mother's chest. Meanwhile, Petyr hops down the girl's back to sit upon her rump, his pale eyes gazing sadly at the stallion - the green bird didn't want him to leave. He'd grown fond of him, just as Naerys had.

excuse me if I seem a little unimpressed with this

RIFT

Rift met the emerald eyes of Naerys' mother with a sort of timid respect; he knew well how the concern of a mother could turn a simple worry into outright aggression. A small cough burst from the stallion's chest as his mind reached into the vault of memory and brought forth the worst night of his short life. It was as if the dust that had clouded his vision as his twins' bodies hit the canyon floor had clogged his lungs. Sucking in a breath and attempting to stay as visibly calm as possible, Rift fought back against the surging wave of memories that threatened to overturn his weak grasp on mental stability.

Blackfire had tried to kill his siblings, the ones not of her womb. She had tried to kill his last remaining ticket away from the bloodwashed canyon of his creation.

Rift felt sick, a pressure building within his stomach and causing his eyes to water. There were voices floating around him, distorted spectres crawling about the grass and mist, their words oozing from their mouths like molasses. Where was he? Jewelled eyes searched frantically for something solid, something real, and found purchase on a figure tucked beneath his wing. Tilting his head and studying the frail creature, Rift was unable to understand who it was. One moment, Avarice was standing next to him, nestled up to his side and prattling on about how she would meet her father some day. The next second, the split bodies of Felony and Morphine replaced the vision, their eyes hard and unforgiving; they knew what he had done on the eve of their murder. They knew who was truly to blame for their grisly demise.

He struggled not to choke on the guilt that filled his throat, his belly, shoving the air out of his lungs to create more room for the swirling mass of regret and pain. Rift forced his eyes to shut, to block out whatever was taking hold of him. Slowly, reality seeped back in, birdsong and the crash of waves upon cliffside gently coaxing the stallion out of his untimely episode. At the sound of Naerys' voice so near, Rift risked opening his eyes once more and found that the world had returned to it's natural state, the sun shining blithely as if nothing had happened.

... Thank you for walking me home, I promise I'll come visit you.

A sweet smile and a gentle nudge on his cheek later and the child was gone, back to the embrace of her mother and the World's Edge. A relieved sigh blew from his chest as he finally saw the lanky filly home safe. With a nod, Rift saw that the young bird that had so inquisitively studied him throughout their journey was watching him, onyx eyes unblinking and seeming to emanate some message that Rift was unable to decipher. He settled for a soft, Goodbye, little friend. Watch her well, she has a reckless soul.

Giving a reverent bow to the girl's mother, Rift then looked on to the golden woman and her lizardlike companion. He noted the annoyance in the woman's face and the tension in her stance, she must have spoken to him while he had been lost. What with her blatant disrespect and unrelenting suspicion, the sorrel stallion decided to take a card from his own mother's hand and play the part the Edger expected of him. He flashed her a joker's grin, as curled and rogueish as he could muster, before giving a wink and ruffling his impressive plumage.

Every inch the scoundrel she thought he was.

Pity, darling, his voice held an uncharacteristic luster, a sort of sass foreign to his disposition, It seems you left such an insignificant impression that I didn't hear a word of what you said. Poor thing, there's still hope for you though. Wryness took over his faux-pompous air and mischief sparked within his pupilless eyes, Get out and see the world, dear, you'd be surprised at how travels can help you understand what a bore you are.

With a flip of his fiery mane and a sassified pivot, Rift strutted into the trees past his herdmates, barely managing to hold back the raucous laughter that filled him.

Alysanne was so thankful for Evangeline’s presence then, she wanted to sink into the chestnut mare’s side and leech strength off of her. But she didn’t dare move. She was too busy being shocked - first at her daughter’s just barely respectful retort to Evangeline and then at Rift’s sudden shift into this revolting, sarcastic creature that Alysanne would have liked nothing more than to race forward and attack right then and there. She felt it, the stir of anger in her stomach like the first spark of a fire. Had he not turned to leave just then, she might have been tempted to chase him out - but movement toward her distracted her.

Naerys moved toward her, finally answering the question about where it hurt, but Alysanne did not let the girl touch her. She waited until it was just the three of them left, what she was about to say was no business of the retreating stallion.

“Let me get this straight.” Her voice and legs shook with anger as she stepped back from her daughter - the pain and fear surging within within her and to avoid them she cloaked herself instead with anger. Naerys had hurt her, just as her father had hurt her, and Alysanne no longer had the strength to pretend that her heart was doing anything other than breaking. She was too weak and she was sure that her daughter knew it, sure that the filly was racing around Helovia making friends with whoever she found because she lacked strength at home with her mother. But Alysanne didn’t understand why Naerys kept coming back if she found companionship and guardianship elsewhere.

Perhaps it was simply coincidence that they kept running into one another. Surely, the pegasus girl would have found Mauja first upon her arrival back in the Edge. Perhaps one of the others. It was easy to notice the large spotted unicorn at the side of her daughter but that didn’t mean that there weren’t others as well, temporary guardians that Naerys sought because her father lived in another herd and her mother was useless.

Everything was crumbling around her and within her, Alysanne could feel herself slipping a little further away as she took another step back from her daughter. She grasped onto the only sure thing that she had, this pain, frowning at the girl before us. “You left the Edge, without telling me. Got sick on these travels of yours with gods know what and instead of coming home or sending Petyr to get me you thought you would stop and make some friends along the way.” Her green eyes burned with hot coals as she watched the retreating form of Rift. Any lingering respect for the stallion for walking her daughter home vanished with how he had treated her friend. What an outstanding friend for her daughter to make. Ready to step up to save a pretty little filly and with only harsh words for her herd mates.

Would he have reacted any differently in her place? Would anyone? Were they so out of line for their reactions to seeing a stranger act with such affection to a filly?

“And what great friends you have made, Naerys. Evangeline may not be your mother but she cares about your wellfare and neither you nor your "friend" spoke to her with any respect. What did she deserve to earn your scorn when you were so easy to trust a stranger you picked up in the Threshold?” Her words were coming out in a hot whisper, too angry to yell. Too inexperienced at having to yell at her children to know what she should be doing but she followed through where her emotions took her - believing that Evangeline would check her if it became too much.

When she found her voice again, it was with finality. The volume never raised but her intensity did, not breaking eye contact with Naerys. “You are not allowed to visit him.” She might have allowed it except for his parting words, but now she refused to entertain the idea. “I want you to tell me whenever you plan on leaving the Edge from now on. You find me first - not Mauja, not Tembovu, not anyone else. Me. Do you understand?”

“Do not judge so harshly of what you do not fully understand.” The child said and Evangeline snorted in response. "I understand perfectly," she began, "What it is to wonder where your child disappeared to. I understand perfectly what it is to hope and to pray that your child is safe, that some stranger spewing lies and false promises doesn't find them before you do. I understand perfectly what it is to stand awake at night, to wander and search and hope that you don't find your child's body. What I don't understand is the relief that comes when your child finally makes it back home and I pray for your mother's sake that she never has to experience it to fully understand how it feels." She replied tersely to the child who obviously considered herself an adult with far more experience with what the world had to offer than Evangeline did in the nine years that she'd experienced.

The orange mare had nearly forgotten Rift was even there as she addressed Naerys, but her eyes shifted back to the stallion and his obnoxious reply to his made her eyes narrow. Tallis had far less patience than his bonded had, however, so when the stallion turned and began to walk away the dragon launched himself from Evangeline's back. Normally she would have called him back, scolded him mentally for even thinking about attacking someone, but the mare remained silent. She was tired of him. So when Tallis' mouth opened and searing dragon flame billowed forth from between scaled lips she simply watched and for the first time in her life she hoped that Tallis' aim as as accurate as it usually was. She oped for seared, melted feathers, for burned and blistered skin, and for the stallion to understand that'd he'd crossed a line he never should have even tiptoed.

"Pity." Evangeline called after Rift as Tallis circled back around to aim another deluge of fire at Rift. "You've made such a bad impression, truly terrible. But I suppose there is hope for you. Get out and go to the herd that so foolishly welcomed you into their ranks. I'm sure their healers would tend to whatever wounds you happen to come across in your journey." She paused and an almost thoughtful look crossed her face. "There could be more hope for you if you learned to control that ugly mouth of yours, but there are just some things that certain individuals, like you, are not smart enough to control."

Tallis circled back toward Evangeline, but he hovered before her as if he were waiting for Rift to make the mistake of turning around and charging. If he did he would be charging headlong into a mixture of dragon fire and the toxic smoke that Tallis had discovered he possessed seasons ago and had never had the chance to use.

WE ARE THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE

"Yes, you understand certain things, Miss Evangeline." she begins, as respectfully as she is able despite the fire raging in her belly. "But what you don't understand are the events that have occurred and that is precisely what I was referring to with my prior statement. Nobody asked me what happened or how or why; instead you both jump to conclusions and react with anger." Despite the unnecessarily terse response from the orange mare, Naerys holds onto her stoic image. Not once did Naerys ever believe herself to be more experienced than anyone else here. She'd never held such illusions of grandeur. Never. But she couldn't help but to feel that Evangeline had crossed a line, just as Rift had.

As far as Naerys was concerned, nobody in this gathering is completely innocent - not even herself.

When Rift turned to speak to Petyr, the girl couldn't help but to smile. Mentally, she nudges the young bird and before Rift can turn to leave, Petyr shifts to pluck a feather from Naerys' left wing. Gripping the brown feather in one talon, he turns his head to pluck a feather from his own wing. Tucking the two feathers neatly together, the bird flies quickly to the sorrel stallion. Landing upon his withers, Petyr attempts to tie the feathers neatly into the man's russet mane before flying back to Naerys' rump. After that brief moment, however, everything that happened between Rift and Evangeline doesn't register with Naerys, only Petyr, because the girl can only manage to stand and stare in shock at her mother.

Naerys had made her move, had gone forward as they'd all wanted her to but her attempt to touch her mother is blatantly denied as the mare backs away from her. The action is a deliberate slap across her face, a jab of a blade into her tender chest. The girl is so shocked she can't even bring herself to hide the pain, instead it is written in every crease on her face, blatantly clear in her softening teal eyes. The raging fire within her calms momentarily, quelled by her mother's cold behavior. They remain locked like that for what seems like ages before the mare finally speaks, her body shaking from the just barely contained rage. Her initial statement is brief and followed by a lengthy silence but then she steps back again. Another jab, another slap. Inside she can feel herself crumbling, losing herself under the weight of her mother's disapproval. Her anxiety amps up, increasing the volume and intensity of the 'she's disowning you' thoughts. She isn't good enough. She'll never be good enough.

Her mother frowns at her and when she speaks again, her accusations beat against her hide - snapping fiercely against her skin but cutting deep enough to wound her soul. But then the anger is back, the white hot heat flaring with an intensity she's never known before. "I was wrong to leave without telling you, mother, but I did try to make it home. The pain gets so bad some times that I can barely see. It can get so bad that it makes my ears bleed. I became disoriented, found myself stumbling through the forest when I heard voices so I went to them but I held back until I saw Brisa." Naerys watches her mother intently, especially when she mentions the gray mare. Her teal eyes burn darkly with her own fire and she matches her mother's intensity. "And Petyr was scared, just as I was. He wouldn't have left me even if I'd begged him to." she adds, more firmly than she intended but at this point the emotions are burning too hot, too intense.

"He likely felt just as attacked as I felt and still feel. I'm not condoning his actions, mother, but he didn't stand a chance against the two of you. You had your preconceived notions of who he is and no matter what either of us said, he was stuck in your little box." she added with a soft sigh, trying so hard to keep herself from losing what little control she had left to shout and scold them right back. She snorts in disbelief at her mother's words about Eva. "Oh? She cares about me, does she? Considering she's never spoken to me before now, I find that difficult to believe. She cares about you, and if she does care for me it's only because I am your daughter. I felt like she crossed a line, mother. This is between you and me. Leave everyone else out of it."

But then her mother is talking again, her voice a heated whisper that was somehow more anxiety inducing than it would have been had she raised her voice enough to yell. And just like that she is forbidden, barred from seeing the stallion that could have been her friend. How many friends would her mother rip away from her? Who was next? Mauja? Or would she just convince the crafters to make chains and then tie her to a tree? Her wounded heart constricts in her chest, squeezing painfully. Her eyes and attention firmly glued to the mare. Once more her eyes grow hot, filling her eyelids with the salty moisture of tears but before they spill, she clenches her jaw and grits her teeth in a final ditch effort to hold them back. "Fine." the girl almost growls through her tightly clenched teeth. She swallows hard as the tears begin to fall. "May I go now?" she mutters and though the question itself is meant to be rhetorical, she waits for her mother's response before slipping into misty trees of the Edge. She could deal with this damned headache on her own, it was far preferable than sticking around for more of her mother's lashings.

SO I DON'T CARE IF IT KILLS ME TONIGHT

Her strength was not so much that she could withstand the assault from Naerys. She regretted the physical distance between the two ever since she had made it but would have pushed the girl further away if she thought it would help either of them. In her indecision, she didn’t move - and died a little more inside every second that she spent with distance between them. How could she take it back now, though? She worried about being rejected the same way that she had rejected Naerys.

Her daughter fought her every step of the way, fought her with all that she had, and Alysanne feared that they weren’t going to be able to survive this so she weathered the hits. Later, when their tempers had cooled, they would have another conversation. She didn't trust herself not to make this worse. She felt angry, both at herself and her daughter for talking to them like this. What did it matter what Evangeline’s reasons were for wanting to protect her? Why did it matter why no one wanted to see Naerys get hurt? It was such a natural reaction to her - Alysanne would step up and defend anyone’s child - and she was confused at how her daughter could not make that connection. She, who made friends and so readily defended one stranger (Rift) yet argued with and battled with another (Evangeline). Naerys wouldn’t accept her mother’s friends but Alysanne was at fault for not accepting her daughters and it hurt how unfair that was.

Alysanne no longer had the strength to verbally respond to the girl, chilled to the bone with what her daughter has turned into and all the while her thoughts screaming at her that this was her fault. She had done this to the girl. But had her absence really been so damaging? She managed a nod in response to the (rhetorical) question that had been asked and watched as Naerys disappeared before she allowed herself to react. A sharp gasp escaped her as she fought for breath to fill her lungs, followed by several more as she tried to catch it, to calm her heart from the thundering pace that it has set. Somehow, now, she managed to get out some words - wings unfolding just a little so that she could try to touch the side of her friend, something to keep her rooted.  “Eva, what have I done?” She stumbled then, her knees giving way, but she managed to catch herself before she fell to the earth. “Was I wrong?” She wasn’t even sure she wanted to know the answer, despair taking over from the fear and anger that had been roaring through her just a few short moments ago.
