Something felt different as soon as Murtagh started the shift from sleep to awake. As the sun started to rise above the cliffs that defined his home, he reluctantly left the world of sleep. It was a shame, that delightful dream where he was king and grown and strong faded as the warm sun touched his face - a groggy groan escaping the young colt as he turned his head into the ground, wishing for a few more moments of darkness. He could and definitely would sleep during the daylight hours but soon his stomach would wake him anyway so it was better to just get up now.

The level of snow had been gradually lessening day by day, something that had been distressing the colt that had lived only in the world of Frostfall, but today was different. There was something itchy between his shoulder where he laid sprawled out on the ground. Though the night was cool, his body heat had melted the last remaining bit of snow that was there and when he rolled over - slowly opening his lavender eyes - he was greeted with the sight of grass. Lots of grass. He had seen bits of it here and there when one of his parents pawed at the snow but this was different.

All remaining tendrils of sleep vanished and he leapt up with a startled cry, spinning in a tight circle - taking in absolutely everything he could see about the changing world. The melting world. Mammina He breathed, staring in wonder at the green shoots that carpeted the ground that he had only ever seen with white - and there, the soft flush of green at the tips of the branches above them.

“Wha… what’s happening?” The world he knew so far had been a world of grey and white and blue, but now there was green and the browns did not seem so cold.

we were soldiers, kings and queens
and tomorrow ain't what it used to be

As much as Lakota hated being useless, there was one thing she loved about not having a job like Ktulu's. You mean being lazy? Aodaun grunted inside her head, amusement flowing freely between them in her half-awake state. Lakota hummed and flicked her tail to hit him with the tresses, the bear snorting and rolling his eyes. They both knew it wasn't true, but the teasing was good-natured and familiar. What she really loved was being able to spend time with her child. Ktulu did her best, and Lakota loved the moments when they could all be together, but Lakota was the one with the most time on her hands. Having wanted a foal since she was but one herself, most of that time was spent with Murtagh. Of course, a young colt did not always enjoy being hounded and pressed eternally to his mother's side, so Lakota tried to restrain herself. It wasn't easy, though. She loved him so much it hurt sometimes, like her body could not physically handle or contain the magnitude of her devotion to her son. It would be a blissful ending, at least, to die at the hands of love. Lakota had never expected any kinder death.

One violet eye slid open as Murtagh began shifting at his usual hour, watching the steady trek he took, the familiar motions. Fuck, she loved him so much. Watching the light shift across his skin, the eyes he got from her blinking sleep away, the messy mane that she was sure to fix once she got up as well. Aodaun was curled up against her back, having been awake for longer, but he wouldn't have moved unless there was danger or Murtagh needed him. Otherwise he was always there with Lakota, the pair of them sleeping intertwined, or like this morning where he was half-beneath Lakota, supporting her as she slumbered. Wriggling, he pressed his mighty paws into the earth, pushing Lakota until she grunted and submitted to his wordless demands. Front half finally came up to sit primly, watching her son adventure out into the world. Never too far, for he knew better. Though he only knew of the verbal punishments he'd receive, could not possibly know the hell Lakota would bring upon the earth if anything happened to him. That was what he should fear, the power he could wield with her love, the destruction he could cause with her devotion. The world would burn if her heart was ever taken from her, ever damaged or wounded.

He is safe with us, Aodaun said softly, easing her thoughts away from violence that did not come as often as it used to. Love and family had tempered her, in some ways. Was this what Alleo had wanted with Rasta all along? As much as she despised the weak willed nature of the mare, she could not fault her brother for this. At last she understood. For a few moments she simply sat and watched as Murtagh glanced about, something like awe and confusion falling across his features, making her sit up and pay a bit more attention. The weather shift was familiar to her, familiar enough to go mostly unnoticed, but this was her child's first spring. A steady thrum of excitement began to build in the pair of them, like two hearts beating simultaneously. He was growing. There was still so much more for him to see and experience, and Lakota wanted to be there with him every step of the way.

"Mammina," came off his tongue easy, and her heart bounded with love across the plains of her ribs until her chest was tight with its need for freedom. For surely her mortal body could not contain such a swell of emotion. A language dead to most, but precious to her. "Yes, bambino?" His halted words responded rather quickly, eyes staring about in wonder, and Lakota leaned her weight companionably against Aodaun as the great bear helped lift her to her hooves. A soft muzzle kiss was pressed to the white head, and she moved to meet her son, standing beside him. Muzzle descended once more, a kiss pressed between his ears, her own eyes flickering up to try and determine what it was he was seeing that was so new.

Ice-melt, Aodaun grunted softly, padding to stand on Murtagh's other side. He didn't like the term Birdsong, and though he'd never grown up as a native polar bear, it was the term he always seemed to revert to. "This is Birdsong, bambino. Spring. The weather turns warmer, things begin to grow, and life returns to the forests. Perhaps Papa and I can take you south soon so you can see how the Falls will look in a few moons?" She had no doubt that Murtagh would jump at the chance, if his constant wandering and adventuring was anything to go by.

His mothers were never slow to come whenever he asked something or called for them, so Murtagh was not left on his own for long, staring out at the Falls in complete confusion. A couple moons ago he might have stepped back and sought the safety of his mother’s company but now, though frightened, he stayed rooted where he was and braved the uncertain world around him. That he was not alone for long helped, of course. Movement behind him alerted him that the pair were moving behind him and soon he felt the soft muzzle of his mother between his ears.

Distracted as he was, Murtagh nonetheless turned his head up to smile at Lakota’s greeting - bumping his head first into her shoulder and then turning to nudge Aodaun with affection. The grizzly face of Eytan might have been the first that the colt had seen, a form bonding between colt and his mama, but there was such love in him for their entire family. And the polar bear was most certainly included in that!  Today he wouldn’t be trying to start the day by trying to entice the bear into a game or wrestle with him. He thought about it - now that the snow was melting, hide-and-seek would be a little more on the colt’s favour! But then a branch shook in the breeze and the soft flush of green distracted him, brought his attention back to the odd world he had woken up in.

Small ears turned at the sound of his mother’s voice, she was explaining what was happening and so Murtagh received his first lesson in the changing seasons. Birdsong. Well, he supposed there were a few more birds singing this morning, but some of them sang during Frostfall as well. It wasn’t a very accurate name. He continued to frown at the world until she said it, that wonderful phrase, that had him jumping with excitement and he turned his full attention to her - spinning around to face her. “Oh! Can we? Where is Papa? Can we go now?”

Well, now that she brought it up he was not going to rest until they ventured out now.
