Between Something And Nothing

A muted pink color spread across the expanse of the horizon, casting a dull glow on the land below. The sun was rising, signaling yet another day to begin. The air was calm and quiet; despite the birds who felt the need to scream. They didn't bother her too much. Calista, the lone unicorn, raised her head in unison with the rising of the sun. She stood on the hillside. It was a strategic spot that granted her the ability to look out over the unknown terrain before her. Her baby blue eyes scanned the surrounding area while her charcoal ears flicked to-and-fro, trying to catch any sign of movement that was not normal. As light began to seep through the dense wood, the mare yawned, and shook out her coat and mane. It wasn't likely that many other beasts were awake yet, so traveling now would be ideal. With a snort, she trotted her way down into the valley.

Wandering alone, there wasn't much protection offered to her besides what she could provide for herself. Perhaps that was the reason why Calista hardly slept. She didn't need to. That night she had finally wandered across the border, stepping away from everything she knew and into this unknown land. The mare was adamant that she would not look back upon the place that had scathed her. Nevertheless, she was careful to stay in the shadows. Some herds were more accepting than others. Still, she wasn't going to chance it. The black painted creature grazed hastily on whatever fresh green she could find, which wasn't much.  Why she ventured into this territory in particular, she wasn't quite sure. Surely it was safer than what she'd left behind. The unicorn had heard stories of the four herds that ruled this wild world. Yet she hadn't an idea where to go from here. She could go any way she desired. And if she wished, she might even travel past and keep going on her own without a glance at any of the holding. Calista hardly knew if her traveling through would even be accepted and the young mare had no particular want to join a herd. She only wanted to see for herself the many places this earth had to offer. Where to start? Again she snorted in annoyance at her own thoughts.

It seemed like forever that the lady had traveled these lands, but it had been mere weeks. Weeks that she had searched high and low for a hearth, to no avail. Her heart was becoming weary with the stress of it all, her spirits dampened. She stopped again, looked over her shoulder at the edge of the forest, where the trees turned to rolling, verdant hills. She watched. Calista had the same feeling in her gut when she first left her homeland, except she had been exuberant about leaving. Now, it was different. She was torn between her love for her sister and her love for herself. She could only choose one. She couldn't help the feeling inside that drove her to run away. She hated herself for abandoning her kin, but there was nothing that could be done about it now. Here, a newfound feeling of independence washed over the unicorn. That was enough to draw her forward. The last several suns had been probably the hardest for Calista emotionally since her father, Eglerion, went mad and sister’s capture. She couldn’t believe that the place she was once fond of would be so heartless, so ruthless, in wanting to claim another herd's lands, spilling innocent blood in doing so. A herd with foals that shouldn’t have been moved from their birthplace so soon. A kingdom that was still hurting from their losses of a leader. Calista barely escaped with her own life. Thus, she was anxious to step ahead. It was one of many occurrences in which she told herself to perservere. She kept going backward, replaying the scene, then forcing the violent images away. She was stuck by her lonesome with nobody to consult except for herself. With this fresh in her mind, Calista found herself in a rather gloomy and exasperated mood. Oh, it would be a long day.

Her normal gait was swift, purposeful, and noted an elegant stride. Her current gait was lackadaisical, aimless, and left a glimmer of possible elegance. It wasn't that she didn't feel good, she felt fantastic, in fact. She had been healed of the black goop that infested her lungs and made her hallucinate. It was dizzying to go from being used to seeing sounds to having things go back the way they were - her old normal. But this didn't stop her from feeling good.

Her change in gait was attributed to only one thing - exhaustion. Carrying around a child in your belly proved to be a bit more strenuous than she had anticipated. She hadn't expected to find herself with a kid in the first place, but she certainly didn't think that just to carry it around in her womb would be so much work.

Nevertheless, Eden forged on, doing her best to pretend that she wasn't pregnant, and that she hadn't ended up with his child. She couldn't do many of the jobs she had formerly done, so she turned to simple, hopefully non-life threatening tasks to keep her entertained. Recruiting sounded time consuming, but she little else to do while she was knocked up, so she slipped into the woods, golden gaze peeled for any signs of horns (and low hanging tree branches - they gave her flashbacks and cringe attacks).

She heard a slight rustle at first, making her pause her lax gait. A flicker of white, a shimmer of bone she recognized as horn. She had found what she was looking for. The unicorn was lurking, that was for sure. The stranger reminded her of a cat.

"Hello? My name's Eden, I won't hurt you," She stated calmly, features soft and reassuring. She couldn't hurt the stranger even if she wanted to, it would risk the health of the child. She tried to turn her side to the stranger, make it more apparent that she was no threat in this state. Eden considered the possibility of the stranger lurking because they were out for blood, but she preferred not to think about that.

The horned beast was biding her time, descending slowly into the field full of green grass. It was a Tallsun morning, which meant that the little animals were returning to their burrows after a busy night of foraging. Calista paused to watch as the critters raced excitedly around the area. She liked to believe that she was very observant for her age, her lilac eyes carefully examining anything and everything that graced their gaze. She had good manners and a intelligent edge to her voice. The young unicorn enjoyed the little details in life, when she was able to focus on them. For example, the way that the grass moved and waved in the soft morning breeze, or how the noisy wood peckers searched for a tasty insect in the bark of the trees, or how the soon to be mother doe wattled around plump with fawn. Her dainty ears pricked forward at the sound of running water. She took off in a slow trot, her Arabian traits showing profoundly in the way she carried herself; her snow-colored tail flagged and flowing behind her, her small ears pricked and her neck arched slightly. Calista reached a small creek, which she saw trickled into a clear pond. Dipping her small dished head, the lady took small sips of the cool water. She relished the feeling of the cool liquid running down her throat and hydrating her body after a long journey. After several minutes she finished her drink, and resumed going about her way. Calista couldn't help but wonder to herself. Would she belong anywhere with anybody? Where did she think she was going in the first place? Every inch of this place was unfamiliar.

Calista had only taken several more steps  when she spotted the strange mare, shattering the lonely desolation that had infected the air. She showed no malice though; no creature deserved unfair assumptions. She was open to anyone that approached her, so long as they posed no imminent threat. A radiant smile lit her features as her body shifted to face the gray unicorn. Her orbs sparkled with delight at the prospect of making a new acquaintance. Maybe this unicorn would be of use to her.

With care, and as subtly as possible, she studied the woman. The two mares were about the same size, with sharp golden horns. Her body was gray, with a small mark on the side of her neck. Pale silken gossamer strands created a lush curtain of hair that draped across the lady's neck and down the crown of her head. One thing that could not be missed was her belly, round and in-foal. It was not difficult for Calista to see. She felt assured by this that the equine was no threat.

She listened to Eden's gentle voice as the mare introduced herself, reverberating in her body and mind making it slightly hazy. Her lilac blue eyes watched Eden's lips moved as she spoke to her, waiting until all the speaking was done before she opened her own mouth and words spewed out. "My intentions are that of pure and innocent traveling, nothing troublesome, I assure you. My name is Calista. Are you from around here?" The tobiano's voice carried to the other unicorn's, her cordial blue eyes making soft contact.

'Here kitty, kitty,' Eden thought as the unfamiliar mare's face lit up, azure eyes shimmering. Her pleased expression upon seeing the mare was practically mirrored by the stranger's ebony and alabaster features. Eden's golden gaze skimmed the mare's floaty bodice, snowy coat dabbed with dark, inky pigments. They stood at the same height, and were each crowned with a golden horn. She certainly sparked Eden's curiosity.

As the stranger began to speak, Eden felt a glimmer of sadness nip at her emotions. The sickness that had plagued her before was gone now, taking with it her sore throat, weak breathing, but also her ability to see sounds. She had begun to label horses in her mind not by names or faces, but by the color of their voice. She was sad to see that trait gone, but all that was all she missed about that illness.

Perhaps she could give horses a color anyway. For fun. She took a moment after the mare had finished speaking to let the works soak in. She closed her eyes, flicking threw her mental archive of colors. Orange, she figured the mare orange, a light shimmery, sherbet shade. She opened her eyes once again, pleased with her classification of the mare, Calista.

She then pondered the sherbet's question. She was born here, nor did she grow up in this land, but she lived here and she didn't feel like delving into the tale that was her past. "If your intentions are as virtuous as you say, then it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance," Eden began, "I'm from a herd that dwells north of here called the Aurora Basin. Although it's weather is icy year round, I assure you it's the coldest thing there. The folk are genuine, pure of heart, and strong no matter their numbers."

Her tone was reassuring, silky, though she was doing her best to not sound pushy. Eden simply had a passion for her herdland, that was all...

"I've been… well, I've been a bit lost in my life's purpose, and I must admit, this Aurora Basin you speak of sounds rather appealing. If you don't mind, I'd like to hear more about your home. Then I might have an idea of whether or not it would suit a damsel such as myself, before I make a decision." Her voice lingered a moment before fading into the silence. Another gust of invigorating air buffeted her sides. Helovia began to come to life around her and she couldn't help but be swept up in the beauty of the place. The lush foliage seemed to stretch for miles, the beautiful expanse of sky marked here and there with a fluffy white cloud. The idea of joining another herd had not crossed her mind before, however, she was intrigued by it. She might not come across an opportunity like this again. Eden seemed to be a respectable creature, and surely the herd she represented was as such.

Her journey had been...long. Although she was more than capable of it. She had lost none of her stamina and endurance. Her body, slender and lithe, was just as young and able as it ever was and always would be. Her hooves could carry her at a steady, ground-eating lope, a pace she could maintain for hours on end without stopping. The unicorn made almost no sound when she moved, her ears flicking and her eyes sweeping her surroundings occasionally, as they always did. Even among friends, Calista was always on alert. Here, in this unfamiliar setting, her wariness was increased tenfold. There were few animals who would truly attempt to threaten a unicorn. But she was not, after all, a very large woman. She was not sure she was ready to end her travels here. The past months had been good for her. She had left behind her responsibilities, her enemies, her crown, her authority. Calista did not immediately come to understand that this simpler life that she led had been exactly what she needed.

Though her appearance seemed calm and confident, her mind was a gale of emotions. Calista could not honestly remember ever being this apprehensive. This was certainly not a feeling the unicorn was used to and no matter how hard she tried she could stop her stomach churning. She dearly hoped that this was the answer. She could not help feeling as the though the wait of her entire fate hung on a delicate thread. The choice she was about to make scared her. Hope was also brimming in her chest, nearly spilling out her along with her nerves, but Eden's kind words helped ground her. She took a deep breath. She had a horn on her head, dammit! Her mother and sister had faced off against the most bloodthirsty scoundrels, sacrificing themselves to save her. They had been brave and fearless and everything she hoped to be. Even if she felt uncertain she wasn't going to show it.

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
They were not alone.

A white shadow was watching them—waiting, listening. Her icy blue eyes were locked upon the newcomer, drinking in every detail, every nuance of her color, every shift, every hair waving in the gentle morning breeze. Wings were folded neatly against her sides, talons locked around a sturdy branch. And through the owl, he saw them. Heard them. Understood the speech Irma normally couldn't.

And because of her, he knew who they were—Eden, and Calista. One from the north, quite pregnant, and one from the beyond. Fresh meat, a piece in the game of Helovia—the game they all played.

Mauja sighed as he walked along the well-worn paths, Diego riding on his shoulder. Sometimes it was damn tiresome, this endless trek to the Threshold to pick up strangers. And sometimes, it made him think that he had been better off an Outcast—better than this. All this duty. All this must do this, must do that, keep track of who was in the herd, deal with Torleik, deal with the Moon Goddess, deal with everything and watch the world crumble around him on top of it.

He was shaking his head to himself, silken mane swaying with the motion, when he came upon them. Eden seemed to have her properly interested in the Basin, and given the golden spear upon her head Mauja figured she would be welcome among them. "The Basin is a lovely place," he said, voice and eyes gentle, soft in their blue. "The cold during winter simply enhances its beauty." Irma's wings whispered wide open, and in silence she glided down from her perch to grab his scarred spine. "I am Mauja, of the World's Edge. Along with the Dragon's Throat and Hidden Falls they form the four herds of Helovia." His ears flicked forward politely as he came to a halt. "The Edge lies by the ocean—an evergreen forest ending in a sheer dead-drop into the sea. You would be welcome among us if you'd like."

Pale ears were pricked forward, attentively listening to the unicorn as she spoke. Her voice soon fell to the wind, the gust whipping tendrils of their milky manes across golden horns and alabaster napes. Eden gave her a warm smile, a tender nod. She was quite sure she could speak of the Basin for days.

"The Basin's members are primarily horned, like us. We have a strong and successful military, talented medics, crafters, informants, and academics. To join our ranks is to join a family. We would more than happy to have you," Eden stated, words dripping with passion, features lighting up. She had a fathomless devotion to her herd. No one else had ever made her feel so welcomed. She was overjoyed to have the opportunity to at least try to help a lost soul find it's way.

Her voice was finished with it's words, but another sound soon replaced it. Rustling of branches, soft thuds, a familiar rhythm to the notes. She flicked an ear towards the sounds, eventually the rest of her head following. A practically gargantuan stallion approached, well worn skin and face, coat dotted with onyx, crowned in ice, followed by owls. Her gaze narrowed, golden gaze lingering on the stallion perhaps a little too long. Had she seen him before somewhere? She was certain they had never been introduced, but he looked familiar.

As he spoke, her gaze drifted back to Calista, then the ground. A king. Interesting. She had never been to the Edge, though it sounded pleasant. She flicked her eyes back up to Calista, giving a respectful nod at Mauja's words. Truthfully, she didn't care who Calista chose to go with. She wanted her to, as she had stated, find her purpose.

As it turned out, she didn't have time to say more, as the unicorn stallion, who titled himself Mauja, stepped into the open. He was tall and alluring; a white canvas splattered with dark spots. The man seemed to know what he was doing. Something about him gave Calista the feeling that it was not his first time around the block. She was surprised that he had shown up, to be honest. It was rather early in the day and she had not particularly expected a second offer. On the other hand, Calista was flattered that both horned equines wanted her to join them, for they both appeared to be noble creatures. Glancing back at Eden, who sounded so passionate about her home, Calista felt a sharp pang of apprehension. She knew the feeling, and missed it terribly. The woman did not know how she was going to choose between them. Either way she would not be able to stop herself from feeling guilty. She stepped a little more into the light as the Mauja approached, so that he might see what he was bargaining for.

There was something of about his words, something she couldn't quite put a hoof on, that made her feel more kindly towards him. For all that he appeared to be older than her, oozing with confidence, his behavior seemed of might and main. The stallion was unparalleled by any brute she'd seen before. She gave him a small, indulgent smile. She noted the two owls perched on Mauja's back. Never in Calista's life had she seen anything like them. Their speckled feathers were contrasting shades, one dark, and one light. Piercing yellow eyes bore into her pelt from the fowls' craniums. This was the first time she had seen such a great bird up close. How fascinating, the mare thought to herself.

Her icy eyes examined him closely for a second longer before she responded. “Mauja. It is a pleasure to meet you.” She dipped her dished face slightly as she spoke. “I did not cross these borders seeking a home, but the idea is growing on me. What does your World's Edge have to offer?” There was nothing in her words to hide the fervor she felt. At last her vocals got the better of her, filling with vibrant tones. Calista always struggled to appear cool and without a care in the world, but it was not her way. The kingdom she escaped was no longer what it once was. She'd changed, and by all reports, so had her homeland. Leaving her family had been difficult. It, they, had been her home for so long. But the time away had been what she needed. Hers was no longer a loving family, but instead a corrupt institute of madmen. She had, for the most part, come to terms with that fact. Calista was both glad and thankful, excited even, that for the opportunity to start anew here.

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
Maybe the reason he kept returning here so often was that he was waiting—not for the end of the world, or wonders or apologies, but for someone familiar to return. Maybe the real reason his eyes scanned the shadows, and his ears pricked with every sound, was because he was straining to catch a glimpse of all the lost pieces of his heart.

It was, after all, the Threshold—where life began anew, where the foundations of empires were laid, and dreams realized.

But some things would never happen. Some miracles would never be anything but stories, hopes and vain dreams, lost in the hearts of mortal men. And still, mortal men hoped, and dreamed, and something in his heart ached as the shadows were nothing but shadows; lifeless and empty.

Psyche would never again step out of them, as sudden and wondrous as she had always been—Psyche had burned on the island of the gods. And Kahlua.. His heart stumbled in his chest. Was this how she had felt, when he had been gone for such long stretches of times?

Had she even missed him at all? Did he read too much into it?

Was his memory skewered by his hopes?

And yet he can't forget the feeling of their sides pressed together

It had been but a second that he had stared into the shadows, nothing but a moment's thoughtfulness, and then he simply blinked, once, and let his eyes return to his present company. There was no need to get lost in the winding pathways of his own mind, not here and not now—there was a time and a place for everything, so he nudged the door into his heart shut.

Calista had stepped forward slightly, to let the early morning light wash down over her like a cloak of gilt water. She seemed to bloom in it, as if she stretched towards the heavens to show off all of her to him. He swallowed the unease. It didn't have to mean anything. It didn't have to mean anything at all, maybe she simply had wanted a better view of who was approaching, to stand at the ready in case he was some nutcase madman who liked to spear strangers through the heart or eat their livers or—

He drew in a deep breath, eyes and face level, betraying nothing of the way his heart had thundered into uneven motion. Please, he thought mutely.

He caught the nod Eden sent his way, and he returned it gracefully.

“Mauja. It is a pleasure to meet you.” "Pleasure's mine," he replied easily, smoothly, nodding to her as well; swallowing his fear, his anxiety, crushing the mad rush of thoughts mercilessly. “I did not cross these borders seeking a home, but the idea is growing on me. What does your World's Edge have to offer?” It was the eternal question, and he never really knew what to say. What did it have to offer, indeed? A King who preferred to be called Queen, a long walk off a short pier, deep fog, a crazy, murderous bitch of a Goddess, and good grazing, he supposed.

But he wouldn't say any of that as bluntly—if she came with him, she would find the truth out sooner or later. So instead, he simply smiled, dark lips curving in a slightly lopsided fashion. "Aside from easy access to a chorus of sea gulls to serenade you? Well... A home—a family. The ability to reach for your dreams, whether that is to walk the path of a warrior, a healer, a craftsman or a priestess. Support in your endeavors. Friends." His shoulders rose in a slight shrug; Diego merely blinked as his perch shifted beneath him. What did a home normally have to offer, aside from that? The Aurora Basin was more ..scenic, and even though Mauja was very fond of his home, it went against his nature to try to sell himself and it. He would rather just say 'see for yourself' and see how things fell out.

"You could always come visit, meet a few of them, before you make up your mind," he added as an afterthought.

“I would not mind going with you, just to go there and see for myself.” She looked at Mauja again, her turbulent blue eyes quieting down again. “I think that perhaps my abilities might be useful to the World's Edge, as well. I am not nearly as talented as I hope to be, but then, I can always learn, and I can offer you the skills that I already have. Surely they will be useful to you at some point or another.”

For a brief second she pictured the sound of oceanic waves crashing against the cliffside, swirls of azure carrying whatever they could grasp out into the abyss. Calista might have been to the seaside a few times with her sister, for that was how this image came to mind, although she could not specifically remember the details. It was funny how they probably all saw the same ocean, even when they were far away from each other. It united them all. That was a satisfying thought.

This being said, Calista made eye contact with Eden. Eden seemed to be a kind soul and she wished the mare the best. She hoped that they could still be friends. She wasn't sure that there would, or could, be much opportunity for reconciliation. Nevertheless the painted unicorn hoped so. She took a deep breath, and gave the alabaster lady a smile, “Thank you for being so kind, but I will have to politely decline your offer. I do hope we meet again, Eden. The Aurora Basin sounds equally wonderful and I'd love to stop by sometime, if you'd have me. May the gods light your path.”

At Mauja's words of acceptance, she grinned again. Perhaps a new home could be found here. A home to rest her weary limbs without the worries of wild beasts; a place where she could find belonging again. The future looked bright. Calista had not dreamed of such luck. She chuckled, “I want to carry my own weight. I do not wish to be a burden on the herd.”

The battle with her father Eglerion, the mad king, that she had fought over her freedom had ultimately been worth it. True, she had gained some scars. Marks that still reminded her, and others, of the battle she had fought. She lost her mother, and as for her sister... well, her whereabouts were unknown, but Calista prayed that she was safe. This world was hers to explore, it seemed, and that alone had made everything worth it, in a sense. With this in mind, the woman was in a cheerful mood. Mauja's words about family came back to her. “Your warm welcome is appreciated and I look forward to building a bond with your family and finding a home there.”

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
Nothing meant anything, and anything was nothing; the anxiety in his heart had sunk its teeth deep into him, and refused to let go. It's probably nothing he tried to tell himself, but it was with the frantic edge of a deer trying to promise itself the wolf wasn't going to kill it. Still, his nostrils widened slowly, his breathing deep and even. It didn't have to mean anything at all, but it had been too easy—it felt like he had showed up, like some lost king from an old story, and she'd simply fallen into his arms. What about him had evoked it in her? His words of the Edge, the allure of such a dangerous, fantastic place as the World's Edge? It felt like she had seen him and chosen him, not his home, not Eden or her home, but him.

It was an uncomfortable thought, and the one thing he tried to drown that always came back with enough force to shatter ice; the ocean of his soul heaved beneath blocks of it coming apart. Tethers broke and the storm reigned.

And still he simply breathed, eyes gentle, black-rimmed ears politely following the flow of the conversation—though it had become rather one-sided now, as Calista made her choice. The usual slow, seeping warmth of success was drowned in the dark torrents of fear—because that was what it was. Fear, no more, no less.

He had always been like that, but after Lotus.. well. He chose not to think about that.

"I am sure they will be," he answered calmly, steadfast as the mountains despite the quaking of his soul as he wondered what unnamed skills she spoke of. In that moment, in that terrified heartbeat, he did not want to know.

Fortunately, she spoke no more of it, turning instead to the other mare. Mauja's eyes followed her focus, roving across her pale body, from the tip of her gilt horn down her pregnant sides to her thick, lush tail. And in his shaken heart, he hoped she was pregnant by her own choice and will, and not the wicked twists of fate that had given him his only son.

He had been here before, many times—knew the bonds formed here. He had seen it happen, the newcomer's desire to be everybody's friend yet having to pick a side. Only once that he actually knew of had someone retained a deep bond with one of the first to greet him, and that was Tembovu, with the lovely lady Rexanna. He hadn't asked any others about it, so he didn't know how likely it was, but with the sunlight casting such a gentle glow in Calista's eyes he hoped she and Eden would meet again, and be friends.

"Safe travels, Eden," he said, voice light and sincere. And that was that—the dice had been cast, and the future was as uncertain as it had always been. Nothing had changed, except that everything had, and he turned to Calista. "I think you will find the atmosphere inspiring for growth," because what else could he say to assure her? "So I doubt you will have to worry about being a burden. Come, then, friend. This way," and with a lost nod to Eden he turned west, and began to lead her the long way home through the morning light, heart still frigid with fear.

[ Sorry for skipping @Eden but I figured it was best to tie this up <3 I'll get a new thread up for us in the Edge soon @Calista ]
