As strong as the seas are stormy.</style>

Her heart was a tangled mess, a memory of what was, when she had been strong and valiant and untouchable. She was a trembling doll of the Queen she deserved to be, the one she had worked so damn hard for. The past nights she had put Thranduil from her mind completely, shaken as she was by their encounter and her own confession. She wouldn't allow herself to think of it, to think of her downfall, the one she could sense on the wind almost as easily as Alice could distant prey. Hotaru had pushed herself away, trying not to remember the nights of heartbreak and betrayal in her past, trying to muster up the courage to find her strength once more. The Goddess fight on top of her encounter with Thranduil had destroyed her walls, and she was rebuilding them to the best of her ability. What else could she do? She loved him, and she could not help but have hope for the future with how he had gently laid her to the ground and slept beside her in their collective scattered ruins. But she was too afraid to even imagine facing him once more, when his guards were up and he was so much more capable of hurting her.

She'd always been weak, so much weaker in reality than she'd liked to make herself believe.

Tension had seeped and clung across her shoulders and spine, until sleep evaded her and she felt listless with errant, vague desires that she could not decode. Alice could do nothing, watching her sister spiral into a dazed state of confusion whenever she found herself alone. She knew only blood and death, dominance and ascension. How could she handle such delicate matters, ones that required a capacity of intellect she did not possess in her youth?

It seemed she did not need to, for one night Hotaru simply stormed out of her cavern, Alice scrambling behind after the disappearing whirlwind of frost and rose. She made her way to the springs, warm and inviting in the midnight hours, erasing the silence that isolated her within her thoughts. Alice drifted behind her, uncertain, watching as her maiden slipped beneath the water and heaved a sigh. Wriggled onto her belly at the edge of the water, tail dipping into it and swaying idly as Hotaru watched her mane and tail glitter atop the water, like starlight. Allowed the water to soak away her worries, if only for a moment, and tried her best not to think of the time she'd met Rhiannon hidden away in one of these tubs.

She could think about that later. Her mind was already too full and her heart too weary to linger on thoughts of loss.
