Bucephalus the Morningstar

They came on the heels of the night, the fire of sunset blazing in their eyes. Azeeza was hard-pressed to outfly her beloved, four pairs of dark wings heralding in the night even as they tried to outrace it's shade. "Home!" The cry of Azeeza's delight trilled through the air in screech and the dark stallion's thoughts in words, and with a surge of feathers and power, Bucephalus surged higher, spirit and soul light, burden of darkness forgotten and abandoned in the wake of homecoming.

He climbed, spiraling over the sands of the Throat, dancing with the wind and with the small raptor who shared his tainted soul and judged him not. Together they wheeled, ascending into the sky on thermals from the land below, and higher they flew, delight unrestrained.

They knew not the welcome they would recieve

They knew not what waited, what would happen

They did not care.

As one, bird and pegasus folded their wings, surrendering to the brutal grip of gravity as it cast them down from the heavens. Closer came the windblown sands, reaching to crush and shatter the delicate bones of the winged beings as they fell.

Bucephalus felt the tightness in his throat, and a wild laugh was snatched from the wind before he snapped open his wings, drag jerking him, straining the pinions that kept him aloft. Azeeza pulled up beside him, fluttering away with the swiftness of a striking snake as the dark stallion descended at a much less breakneck pace, hooves pawing at air until solid earth greeted him.

Cantering, he circled, wings fanning the air, itching to take once more to the sky and hurtle himself across the land, to the tree that served as his bed, to the herd that he could not bring himself to harm. Azeeza dove, landing with ease on her beloved's withers, shifting in place until the stallion folded his wings. Refined features lifted, ears pricked as he looked to the south, tension and dread beginning to replace the freedom and joy that had occupied him so completely merely moments prior. They did not know who would greet themm, who had seen their aerial display, did not know whether or not the sands would truly become their home once more.

Now, they cared.

Now, they worried.

"Speech."
"Azeeza"

If this is to end in fire
Then we should all burn together

NASREEN

Silently, the maiden waded in the shallows off of the Dragon’s Throat, letting the cool water swirl around her fetlocks. Even as evening fell, it provided little relief from the scorching summer sun, but without trees there was not much to be done apart from flying to the mainland for some shade. How she missed the damp embrace of the dark wood in the Edge! Even at Tallsun’s worst, the Edge had never been as unbearably uncomfortable as this godsforsaken desert. Moodily, she shook a sweaty strand of hair from her neck.

But who was she to pout? Nasreen asked herself as she plodded through the waves, following the shoreline. They had offered her a home here, after all, and without them she’d surely be lost. She should be more grateful, she scolded herself. Still…in her time here, the girl had made few friends, and her only contribution to the herd was common footsoldiering for seasonal patrols. Her new home had held the promise of so much more, yet here she was, feeling as empty and alone as an outcast. Confused, the mare kicked a hoof across her reflection in the sea, sending droplets flying like shattered crystal.

Nasreen didn’t know what caused her to look up; perhaps it was the far-off cry of a hawk, or perhaps it was Fate itself that drew her eyes to the sky. Either way, she couldn’t believe what she saw. She had stopped watching the horizon long ago, but now that the silhouette that she had so eagerly awaited had actually appeared…her thoughts trailed off as she watched the stallion swoop into one of his trademark dives and her stomach did likewise. Bucephalus was back.

She did not understand what spurred her into a full gallop as his hooves touched the sand, shooting to meet him like an arrow fired from the east. But she was running, her own hooves barely skimming the ground as she rushed up to meet him, breathless and a bit dazed. When she halted before him and the hawk that perched so gracefully upon his shoulders, she found that she didn’t know what to say—what could she say, after all, when she couldn’t make sense of all the feelings that were suddenly vying for attention in her brain? And so she settled with next-to-nothing, doing her best to keep her grey gaze distant as she commented, “You’re back?” Though she hadn’t intended it to, it came out as a question rather than a greeting. And now something behind the clear silver eyes flickered, and they sought the stallion’s gold stare for the first time in seasons, wondering if this time, he would stay.
