It was often easy for Gwaihir to go unnoticed; he flew where the air was cold and thin and at such altitudes it was easy for a horse on the ground to miss the dark circling speck unless they looked for it. His sight however, like all of his kind, was nearly unparalleled and the figures on the ground were as clear and sharp even from over a mile up. It was he that first spotted the stranger skulking around their border and for a moment might have let it go and continued searching for his own meal save for that the bi-horned figure seemed to be following a more familiar face.

Morrigan was one of the precious few that had earned the eagle’s affection; she had been there to help save his Meg when the aftermath of childbirth had threatened them both. According to Gwaihir, anyone who would save his Meg was owed a certain level of allegiance and though he would willingly abandon his hunt to fetch Meg for any member of the Throat (because he knew she would want him to) only her children and his select favorites would warrant such swift and immediate action. He soared, not back across the water but towards the meadow where he knew she had been using the open ground to practice maneuvers in the light covering of snow. Reaching out though their connection he was lucky enough to find her not far off

Megaera heard the eagle coming, heard the calling of his mind for hers even above his series of high-pitched whistles and the mare needed no further prompting. Before he could reach her position she was sprinting towards him, gathering speed and then lifting her armored body into the air with deft wingstrokes. The golden-headed eagle banked swooping himself past and around and leading her back towards the Heart. “Tell me!” the mare urged and Gwaihir’s gruff voice responded, short and to the point. “A stallion: dark, spotted, horned and wingless. Following Morrigan near the borders and alone as far as I could see.” She said no more, but the eagle felt the anger and urgency bubble inside her and guided her to the spot where he’d last seen the suspicious character. High above, the stallion was not especially difficult to spot; the long grasses around the Heart were only effective cover at ground-level. It seemed the healer was a safe distance distance away (for the moment) but the Sultana was often overzealously protective of her flock and held no doubt of this hunter’s sinister intent.

She descended in glorious fury, like a comet from the overcast sky that aimed to put a crater in the stallion’s path(if only she could have rained fire and ash like the Sun’s daughter). The fall was a quick one as she was intent on not giving much time for him to react. Megaera didn’t yell or scream with the thrill of the attack as she might once have done, knowing that the later he saw her the better. Nearing the ground, her wings billowed open again, arresting her speed and at that moment she reached inside herself, pulling forth that light—oh how she always reveled in unleashing it—that burst outwards from her body towards her prey. If announcing her presence had been the only goal it would have been overkill in the extreme, but if it temporarily blinded the brute it would be well worth the energy.

Hooves swung underneath her, mowing down grass and finding purchase in the cold ground. She used her forward momentum to hurl herself at the stranger. She left no room for a polite bubble of personal space, but threw her lesser bulk straight at his front. If he didn’t shy away from her light fast enough they might have butted heads. With her crown conveniently encased in sharpened steel, that would be markedly worse for him. “Who do you think you are, making prey of my people?” It was growl, guttural and utterly unforgiving. Of course, it didn’t matter who this was or why he was here, no one touched a member of the Dragon’s Throat before going through her first. Her stature made no matter; were there an army at her gates she would fight alone and bleed and die before harm came her children, as fierce a mother as she, and what was a queen but a mother to her people.

"Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong.

No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first.

And is waiting for it."

-Terry Pratchett

Oultik's tail flicked behind him as he concentrated on the mare, Morrigan. He did not know anything of her but he certainly wanted the interesting scale that she had in her possession. Cloven hooves allowed him to step quietly on the frostbitten ground. Oultik's breath rose above him and briefly his eyes watched it leave him; he hoped that the tall grasses would allow him to surprise the mare draped by a spider's web.

It was Oultik himself that was to be surprised.

He had been so focused on the task at hand that he did not notice Megaera's descent. He only saw her briefly before being blinded by her light. Unimpressed with something that was no more than a pretty magic trick Oultik stood his ground as the pegasus hurled itself towards him. The unicorn was unable to see beauty in any winged creature and in such armor he could not be sure of gender either way. Male or female he was filled with utter disgust at the sight of it. It had been too long since he had fought with one of the creatures he had devoted his life to destroying. His eyes violently lit up as the beast showed aggression that Myrinne had not even seemed capable of displaying. Apparently all Helovian pegasi were not those who grew delicate insect wings. Since he had held his ground in arrogance and because he did not wish to show how much of an affect the flash of light had on his vision, he and the pegasus butted heads. If she had been without the armor his horns could have met her flesh but instead Oultik was the one harmed. The sharpened steel that dug into his skin made him jerk his head up out of reflex only leading to further tearing of his skin.

“Who do you think you are, making prey of my people?” "Making prey of your people?" Oultik shook his head trying to free himself from the sting of the blade that had bit deeply into his skin. He replaced the pain with an equally painful hatred for pegasus kind. It festered inside of him; a self inflicted disease to save him from the heartbreak that was always threatening to destroy him. How could one of these creatures dare to say that Oultik preyed on anyone? Her people mercilessly burned settlements to the ground. "Even those equines who have not been favored are above being grouped among your kind." Blood ran from his cut and rolled down his face.

Oultik's dragon spewed flames. He cursed the armor that would make the fight one that the birdbrain would have the upper hand on. Oultik hoped that the fire would heat her face plate and that it would give him time to consider his following action. The stallion planned everything to the point of it being his major fault, not even in battle could he move forward without some sort of plan.

Had she not been in such well crafted armor he would have had a nice chuckle about a woman who dared to stand in his way but, despite her race, Oultik was not as arrogant as to underestimate her. He could not whenever she wore armor that left him wondering how to retaliate.

Oultik didn't betray himself by a turning of the eye before lunging towards the right, he moved with no warning. The mare had a build that would give her the allowance of greater speed and endurance than him but he was stronger and more agile than she. It was his agility that was his crutch in a move like this. After lounging to her side Oultik nimbly turned to leap once more with teeth bared. This time his eyes were on the target.

Oultik's dual colored eyes didn't stray from the feathered appendages on the back of his opponent. Whenever he saw feathers his memories were quick to come. Oultik could hear the screams of all he held dear every time that he saw winged characters; screams of agony, screams of those in battle, and the screams that had came from his own lips as he had walked among the charred and broken bodies of his friends and family. The troubled man set loose a battle cry to try to drown out the screams of the past that sounded so fresh in his own ears that he wondered if Megaera could hear them too.

If his actions went as planned he would grab hold of her wing and he would latch onto it so that he could shake and pull on it as though he wanted to tear her limb from limb.

OOC;; Sorry! I wanted to take some time to think this post out. Battling is still a pain for me. I didn't realize there was a 72 hour time frame to reply to challenges D:
