The sun sat high in the sky, fierce and hot even as Tallsun drew closer and closer to its end. It drowned the Dragon’s Throat in light and heat, the blessed qualities on the God that held sway of this land where all was a testament to his beauty. Others shunned the desert, the blistering heat, but for the Sun’s Sultana it was in her blood; the sand it was hearth and home and—at least for now—all was well.

Yes, she had faced challenges--apparently being a good leader was was not so easy—and she had had to work to mend the mistakes she had made. Still, she had her position, her honor, her herd and as always was determined to continually prove herself worthy of all three. Most importantly, she had her children. Three lights in her life that instead of making all else seem dim by comparison, brightened every aspect of it. Her son Nizho was bold and adventurous; Meg was always thankful that Gwaihir didn't mind helping her keep tabs on the boy who had started to roam almost the day he was born. Little Asavvi was an odd one, considering both her parents. She was as sweet and patient as anyone Meg had ever met and asked more questions than there were minutes in the day. She watched her two youngest grow and with a great pride allowed them to venture off on their own for longer and longer periods.

It was bittersweet, not to have them always at her side when they were so dearly loved but their growing independence had a silver lining. Meg now had more time to give back to her first love: her elder daughter Mordecai. The twins had taken so much of her energy lately that Megaera's hours with Mordecai had been painfully limited. They would remedy that now that that Nizho and Asavvi could be left to their own devices for a while and she hoped they would start today.

Her darling girl was a wild thing, so often willful and rude. She had a great talent for being a pain in the ass, and now that she was nearing womanhood there was little hope that she would change anytime soon. Meg loved her for every bit of it.

The mother had a fierce and blazing pride that her daughter had grown so strong, both in body and soul. Even when she completely disregarded Meg’s orders—like in sneaking Nizho out of the Throat for field trips—she always had to admire the brazen sort of confidence that those rebellions required. Mordecai would make a fine warrior, Megaera thought, if that was what she chose. Hard not to when one was blood of the Warden and raised by the Sunspear.

The Sultana entered the arena, resplendent.  It was high noon, and she was fresh and cooled from a dip in the lake. Still slightly damp, her summer’s coat and clean feathers gleamed in the sun. Excited for her little baby’s first test, she moved towards the center of the ring at a jaunty trot. In the middle she halted, and swept down with her broad wings as she lifted in a little rear and called to her daughter. “Mordecai!” The shout was welcoming, exciting, challenging, and a grin spread across Megaera’s face. There were so many things to teach her, and they’d see if she had an instinct for battle. Somehow Meg was sure she would.

The dark girl had heard her name shouted and she was fairly certain that everyone else in the Throat and the surrounding area had heard Megaera and had picked up on the challenge in her tone. Mordecai's ears had fallen back against her head because she naturally assumed that she was in trouble, but it wasn't without good reason. She'd intentionally disregareded her mother's order to not take her younger brother out of the Dragon's Throat and she'd done it any way. She was positive that that was the reason that her mother was calling her out. She was going to be punished for her continued disobedience, but Mordecai was not one to take punishment lying down. If her mother intended to punish her publicly she would have to fight to do it.

That was the girl's thought as she entered the arena where her mother stood waiting in all her radiant glory. Her mother was beautiful with her sleek, shining coat and her gleaming wings. That was one thing that made it so obvious that she was not Megaera's true daughter. She was everything the sultana was not. Where the Sultana was sleek and clean, Mordecai was rough and dirty. Megaera was compact and fast while her daughter leaned more to the muscular side of the spectrum. The Sultana had more experience in the art of battle, where Mordecai had only instincts and the inborn desire to prove herself and dominate anyone that put themselves against her.

She would win, no matter who it was.

The dark girl came to a standstill near the center of the ring, several paces from where her mother stood waiting for her. Her ears tilted back, but were not yet flat against her head as she assessed her mother. No armor was present on her mother's body as it normally was when she intended to fight, so what was this? Was this not what she had assumed it to be? Whatever the case Mordecai had already psyched herself up for a fight and every fiber in her body thrummed with anticipation.

"Fight." She said, her dark eyes glinting with her desire to fight and win. She gave her mother little choice in the matter, for no sooner had the word slipped past her lips she had called upon her magic with the sole purpose of turning the blood that flowed through her mother's veins into acid. Her hope was that whatever pain she might cause her would be enough to render her motionless as she attacked. The dark girl charged, her teeth bared and her hooves ready. She bit at her mother's neck, hoping that her greater height would allow her to bite high enough on her neck that she'd be able to control her mother's head and force it down toward the ground. If it worked she aimed to kick her hooves at her mother's forelegs.

If not.... well, the girl would just have to suffer through trial and error until she found an attack that worked.

Mordecai arrives and uses her acid magic to try and turn Meg's blood to acid. She hopes that it works and the pain will allow her the upper hand. She charges and bites for Meg's neck. Her goal is to be able to control Meg's head and force it down toward the ground. At the same time she aims to kick her front hooves against Meg's forelegs.

The first sight of her dark daughter had Megaera’s playful grin twitching at the corners of her mouth; she always looked forward to a good spar and the bonding time with Mordecai would only add to the fun. A careless laugh started deep in her throat but met its quick death when she failed to find any trace of humor reflected back at her. Chance and not blood had given them the same eyes but while hers had been alight with pride and excitement she only saw a strange, steely sort of determination in Mordecai’s black pools.

Megaera had always had a temper, it could not be denied, it flared quickly when there was cause but often faded just as fast. There had always been a different cast to the anger she glimpsed in the filly she had been given to love and cherish, and because she could not comprehend the reason for it the Sunspear had tried to ignore it altogether. To her it seemed to be a colder anger than she had ever felt—something of stone, not fire—that was rooted so deeply she’d never had a chance of stopping it. Now, Meg thought she saw a bit of it and as the girl came to a stop, facing her in the great arena, all thoughts of training fell away. Her ears fell slightly, and a quizzical concern fell over her face in the seconds they stood squared against each other. Had she done something? Had something happened? Perhaps this isn’t the time to train… she thought, and began to take a step forward, speaking more softly, “Mordec—EEAAHHH!!!!”

Megaera’s word was turned into a scream. Shock drove the sound just as much as the pain did, and that was considerable. All at once her entire body was seized in a searing vice as her own blood began to burn. What is this? Why?! her mind could barely form the questions but she could never have spoken them as she only yelled in a wild outrage at the fire in her veins.
Every part of her body that needed blood was captive to it—and that meant every part of her. Muscles stiffened and quivered, trying to reject the conflagrating fluids her heart traitorously pumped out and all other senses seemed to fall away because she could feel only the burning that seemed like it would last forever.

Even when the acid abated, it did not go quietly. Her blood ran red again but her daughter’s magic left the damage it had made on her insides and the sting of it made every movement agonizing. Where she had vein close to the surface, namely around her face and lower legs, the acid had eaten holes through her skin and now small red rivulets dripped slowly from the burns.

Awareness roared back to her but not in time to avoid her daughter’s charge. Finally able to feel more than the fire, Megaera recognized first the pressure of teeth on the back of her neck, pushing her head downward. “NO!” The roar was raspy and the movement that accompanied it was instinctive, violent, for in those first few seconds of consciousness she forgot that it was someone she loved that stood above her.

The Sunspear’s head thrashed and her neck twisted, trying at once to wrench it away from Mordecai’s grip and bring her own snapping teeth to the patch of neck behind her daughter’s ears—a place she had so tenderly nuzzled so many times before. Her goal, still still running on instinct as her thoughts fought their way back from the acidic takeover, was to avoid being caught under her taller opponent at all costs. Her wings snapped open and swept down again as she tried to lift her front half into a rear. Hooves flailed toward chest and face to force her opponent back.

Megaera's screams made Mordecai's ears flatten completely against her neck, but she was relentless in her use of magic until she could no longer keep hold and control it. It had done exactly what she had wanted it to do and that gave Mordecai enough time to charge and set her second plan of attack in motion. Her teeth closed on Megaera's neck and she tried to shove the other mare's head toward the ground. The girl did not expect her mother to allow herself to be taken down so easily, so when Megaera began to fight back the girl was not surprised. It was the violence with which she twisted her head to shake Mordecai off that was unexpected. A growl rumbled in Mordecai's chest as she struggled to keep her hold on her mother, but her teeth were not meant for biting and holding on. Megaera wrenched her neck out of Mordecai's grasp and the force of  that accompanied with the girl trying to hold on made her teeth snap together. It sent of jolt of pain through her teeth into her jaw that manifested itself in an ache and, somewhere in the back of her mind, she was aware that the ache in her teeth and jaw would not allow her to bite as hard as she might want to later.

Mordecai's head was still down as she'd been trying to force her mother's head down when she'd managed to slip from her grasp and she was distracted by the sudden, sharp pain in her teeth that she momentarily forgot about Megaera's potential attack. It wasn't until she felt the other mare's teeth close on that tender spot behind her ears that she was suddenly jerked back into the reality of battle. An angry squeal slipped past Mordecai's lips and she jerked her head up at the same time that Megaera was beginning to lift herself into a rear. Her mother's sudden added height was beneficial to her, but not to the girl that was trying to escape her grasp. Add to that the hooves that beat against her chest and she knew that she'd fucked up. She'd have to chalk it up to a lesson learned; don't let a moment of pain distract you from the fight or else there will be more pain immediately following.

Not being one to take a beating lying down, Mordecai began to fight back. She twisted her head to try and break free of her mother's grasp when the idea struck her like one of her mother's hooves and made her pause for a moment as she contemplated it. She grunted as another hoof struck her promising of yet another bruise and more sore, aching muscles that would serve as reminders of how she'd let herself be caught. She remembered how the first time she used her magic against Megaera how it had made her stiffen and freeze as the acid ran throughout her body and how beneficial it had been. She figured that it would be worth another try and she began to call on the magic that she wielded proudly, but this time she was not intent on her mother's blood against her. She was trying to focus on Megaera's muscles and whatever fluid would be building there as they fought.

The muscles in her hindquarters bunched and it was quiet sudden after pausing in her struggle and attempting to use her magic that the girl moved. Her forelegs folded, her hooves tucked against her chest as she threw herself forward with the intent of using her own weight and Megaera's against her. She hoped that the combined weight would take Megaera off balance and send her toppling over and down to the ground. She also hoped that if her mother went down she could keep moving and kick sand into her face to not only put some distance between them, but to give herself time to come up with another plan of attack and, ideally, hinder Megaera's sight.

Meg gets her head free and the force of it causes Mordecai to hurt her teeth/jaw, which distracts her. Her distraction allows Meg to bite down on her neck. She takes the hooves against her chest. She tries to use her magic against Meg again, but this time she targets the lactic acid in Meg's muscles. She then throws herself forward to try to knock Meg to the ground since she reared up. If that works she plans on running past her and kicking sand in her face as she goes.

Oh, it hurt. every second, every movement that twitched a blood vessel jarred some internal burn. The whole body needed blood, it was everywhere and so when her own blood had betrayed her, turned to acid, there was not a place it didn’t reach. Megaera had been burned before, had nearly lost a wing and her life in the fiery pit of Helovia’s Heart, but those burns, dimmed by memory stretched over the span of years, had not hurt half so much as these. She felt scorched, corroded, rusted and mangled from the inside out and she could not rest, could not heal or even be fucking still because someone, something, was still attacking her. When logic was gone, when emotion was stripped, when memory and mind were whittled down to the barest instinct and the essential parts of her heart laid bare for all to see, there was no part of Meg that could allow herself to just lie down and take it. She had mounted her attack before she could be inhibited by the identity of the target.

The Sunspear felt her hooves smack against her opponent’s chest and there was a savage pleasure in it, a coursing stream of satisfaction in the well-placed hit. Megaera felt her hooves strike against her daughter’s chest and her stomach turned over on itself, a roiling pit of guilt at striking her child in anger.

She had struck, again and again, before the severity of her actions alighted in her mind, and perhaps if time had slowed, the widening of her eyes, the horror that crossed her face, would have been plainer to see. The weight over her hind legs shifted, she tried to shuffle back, to move away, to stop! This couldn’t be happening; this wasn’t the friendly spar she had intended; this wasn’t the fight she’d been looking for. This wasn’t her daughter.

She was never yours.

Some small, ugly voice whispered it into her mind. No! The Earth God gave her to me. Einarr gave her to me. She is mine. Mine! Mine to protect and to love! Meg might have taken that little voice, that little doubt, and crushed it with all the might she could muster, but all on the sudden she was burning again. It was different this time, in the muscles more than the blood, but that didn’t mean much. Again she screamed, vicious, angry, hurting beyond all that she had felt before and all she could imagine. Again, her limbs seized: front legs retracting, wings half folding behind her. Smaller…be smaller and the pain will be too.

Beyond the burning there was big, black wall coming toward her. The solid mass of Mordecai would not stop and she was placed so precariously, half-way in the air. Mordecai hit Meg with a force that knocked the breath from the mother’s lungs. Her scream ceased, not because the pain had but there was no breath left to give it volume. Megaera’s mouth was gaping, trying to breath in of breathe out, anything to get the air moving and inside the muscles that moved instinctively in the search for oxygen only burned from the fluid that had built up and turned traitorous.

Black eyed searched but saw only sky; an endless swath of uninterrupted, open blue. Was she flying now? Her mind tried to cling to that simple and comforting thought for it was so much sweeter than the moment’s reality. She wasn’t flying, but falling; the ground rushed up to meet her and so inhibited was she by her daughter’s magic that the Sunspear did not shift, or twist or do anything whatsoever to prepare herself for landing. There was a sickening snap. The right wing, half extended, had bent the wrong way before her weight came crashing down.

She found her breath then, gasping and laid out on her back while the dark body of her opponent moved around her. Get up. You have got to get up! she shouted it at herself, but oh, everything hurt so much…. She drew in oxygen and drew on something from much deeper within herself, within her soul. The magic of her rank surged, pumped like adrenaline through her body, numbing the aches and breaks and burns. The strength of warriors that had come before her, the strength of her own spirit, like a balm against everything that held her down. Megaera thrashed, twisting her to bring her legs under her and launch her up and forward. She followed, though Mordecai was already up and away, pushing through pain and caution to accelerate as quickly as she was able. She kept head low and aimed her to snap sharply at her daughter’s heels. Trip her, Meg thought, pin her, and stop this madness.

Honestly, the last thing Mordecai expected was for her shove against Megaera to actually work and send the more experienced mare falling backwards onto the ground. Even with the use of her magic she had expected some sort of retaliation on her mother's part and when there was none she hesitated for a moment. She could hear the snap of bone when Meg hit the ground and it made the girl fidget. It made her think of the mother that hadn't wanted her, the one she spent so little time with, the one that broke her wing and it made Mordecai's stomach churn uneasily. She finally forced herself into motion and moved over the mare that had raised her, kicking sand toward the mare as she moved past.

The chaos of battle was beginning to wane thanks to the snap of bone that had effectively snapped her back into reality as well. She had attacked her mother. She attacked her mother. As the chaos continued to bleed away and she continued to become more and more aware of her surroundings and what she had done, the more guilt she began to feel. She had come into the arena at Meg's call assuming that she was going to be punished for disobeying her mother's orders and she fought her.

The thundering of hooves on the ground behind her became apparent to Mordecai as she raced across the arena. Sweat foamed on her sides, neck, and haunches but she didn't let the sweltering heat slow her. She was looking for an escape, for an opening in the arena walls even though she could have flown. She could have spread her wings and taken to the air and flew away but she could see, in her mind's eye, Megaera catching up to her and clamping her teeth down on a wing and yanking her back down to the ground. She didn't want that. She couldn't have that, so running to freedom, at that moment, was the only option that she saw.

In the end it was the lose sand that slowed her enough to allow Megaera to catch up with her. Her ears were flat against her head as she glanced back to see how close her mother was and it surprised the girl at how fast Meg could be. She was soon snapping at Mordecai's heels and the girl tried to kick at her mother's nose to get her to back off, but it just helped with tripping her.Mordecai's dark eyes were wide with surprise when she realized that she was falling. Her wings stayed tucked tightly against her side as she hit the ground. Sand bit into the skin of her knees as they hit first then her right shoulder and wing hit the ground. The rough sand rubbed away skin on her knees, leaving them raw,  the muscles in her shoulder ached from the weight of her body slamming it into the ground, and her wing ached from being dragged along the ground as her body slid until it finally stopped.

She laid still for only a few seconds, but those seconds seemed like an eternity. The brindled girl forced herself to her hooves and spun to face where her mother had been. There were no words that found their way to her lips and she could only assume that Megaera's pursuit of her meant that she wouldn't allow Mordecai to run away and abandon the fight. So what could she do? The obvious answer was keep fighting and that was what the girl did. She continued to move until she found where her mother was and then she launched herself into reckless, headlong attack. Her wings flared at her sides and her teeth were bared as she moved to attack with the sole purpose of biting wherever she could and slapping her mother with her wings to confuse and distract her.
