All or nothing
RIFT

He had yet to explore the heavenly fields and was glad that the directions he had received were detailed, otherwise Rift would have quickly found himself lost among the Helovian wilds. The path had been mired with mists and Rift had been forced to pick his way carefully about, as the path was littered with stones and debris. He supposed it would have been an easier task to fly directly to the fields, but whether he just hadn't had the idea or he wanted to be familiar with the terrain, he refused to admit.

Looking about he, didn't see the winged form of Laedere or her companion, though he looked forward to reuniting with the sweet mare; he hadn't seen her since Tallsun when she had assisted in escorting Naerys back to the World's Edge. As his eyes scanned the immediate area, Rift searched for the blackened figure that he assumed would be Badger. At his briefing, he had only received the gent's name and description, though he looked forward to meeting yet another member of his herd.

Taking a few steps forward and into the greenery that sprung up so liberally within the fields, Rift lowered his head and gathered a mouthful of sweetgrass. He straightened and moved forward once again, ducking down to snag another bite once his mouth was empty. He moved about the field slowly, staying close to the entrance path while keeping a sharp eye out for his herdmates' arrival. He had never been on a patrol before and decided that a full belly would ultimately help him weed out whatever scoundrels could be lurking in the grass.

A chuckle erupted from the gangly lad, though the laughter sounded more like a chocking guffaw behind his full cheeks and sealed lips; what a joke, Rift, a defender of Helovia! He was nearly scared of his own shadow, how was he to protect those who actually deserved to be protected?

The air had grown crisper, cooler, and not just because of my recent change of living situations. No, it was cooler now than it was a week ago. Orangemoon had finally set in, huh? It would soon turn the trees amber and gold, then it would get colder and colder till the trees lost their leaves and snow was on the ground. Normally the changing of the seasons didn't bother me, but this year, I was changing, too. As the land changed with me, I felt comfortable. Change is necessary, change is all right.

One thing I hadn't yet changed was my amount of friends. I had a few when I was a foal, sure, but they were lost to me now. Relying upon my mother and sister as my only friends could get complicated. But now that I thought about it, I wasn't sure if I knew how to make friends...when you're a child it's different. Where your friend comes from, or who they are doesn't matter. As an adult, it does matter. I don't like that it does (why can't we all just get along?), but I can't change that.

Or can I?

So, that's how I thought of Mission: Befriend Everyone in Helovia Unless They're a Jerk (MBEHUTJ for short). I hadn't thought of a definite, systematic way to get this done easily, yet. Therefore, I decided to experiment on a few test subjects till I had devised a way to complete my mission in the best way possible.

Test Subject Number One: Red pegasus stallion, spots on wings.

Mission is ago.

I land in the heavenly fields (nostalgia hits me like a truck) and trot over to the stallion. I hold my head up high, and plaster a smile on my face. I'm relaxed. The goal in this experiment was to make the subject feel comfortable talking to me. There are other ways to make friends, yes, but for now, I was experimenting with this method.

"Hello,"  I state softly, pausing when I realize I don't know what else to say. An introduction, maybe? A compliment? Both? Both. "My name's Auriel. I like your spots," I say, pale amber eyes flicking from the spots on his wings to his face. Let's see how this goes.

I am somewhat relieved when my patrol this month is somewhere a bit less creepy than the crimson blood falls. Not that I didn't enjoy last season's meanderings, but the Heavenly Fields are far more my scene. I'm also happy to hear that I am to patrol with Laedere, as I'm rather fond of the woman who invited me to the Throat and unlocked this new period in my life.

Orangemoon is an enjoyable season, neither too hot nor too cold. I trot along quite happily, sporting my new, trim figure. Almost a year out in the wilderness has stripped away all excess fat, and whilst I'm still 'big boned', shall we say, I am nowhere near as rotund as I was when I arrived in Helovia. The herbs stuffed in my halter ruffle in the gentle wind as I make my way towards my assigned patrol, hunting for the pegasus stallion I'd been given the name of, as well as Laedere and her dolphin companion. When I arrive, I find the pegasus grazing, which sure seems like a good idea as my stomach gives a pointed growl. I don't eat pre-patrol, on the off chance that we get chased by wolves and I have to run the hell away. The less excess meat I'm carrying in that scenario, the better.

Rift isn't alone, and my warm gaze travels to the unknown hybrid filly. I nod to both her and the stallion, and focus my attention on him first. "Hello there - you must be Rift. I'm Badger, one of the herd healers." Then I look to the filly, my expression still kind. "What's your name, Miss? I don't think we've met." She doesn't smell of the Throat, unless my nose deceives me.

Laedere was going to patrol. She didn't particularly want to patrol, but she knew that she had to. She had to help the herd out somehow, and since she didn't seem to be able to do so any other way this was how she would do it. She had been given a location as well as two names - two names that she had brought into this herd - Rift and Badger.

So, Ardere started out before her. A beacon in the air as she heads out in the direction of the heavenly fields. Still, even though she knew the pair, she did not dare to allow her wings to spread - to feel the gentle breeze run through her feathers. No. It was not okay. She wanted to ignore the hole in her wing. She wanted to ignore the fact that she could not fly. It was a struggle, knowing that she was left on the ground when the rest of her kind could take to the skies, but she tried to not be as taken apart by it.

When she arrived, she appeared to be the last one. Gentle orbs flickered between the pair before she allowed words to slip from her mouth. "Mine sincerest apologies for mine late arrival," a gentle lull of a tone to her voice as she moved in a little bit closer. Still, there was one more whom she didn't recognize lurking around them. She had come too late to hear any conversation that may have happened but she assumed one of them had already inquired as to who she was.

"Mineself tis be Laedere, and mine companion be Ardere," she introduced herself and her companion to the foal before she shifted her weight and glanced back at the other Throat's members.

RIFT

It was not long before the sound of a voice caused the munching stallion to tense in surprise. Some watchman.

Pupilless ruby eyes slid up from the verdant earth to find the winged form of a mare, her skull crowned with horns and her coat pale. Straightening and working to swallow his mouthful of grass, Rift chewed silently for a moment before sucking in a breath and folding himself into a proper bow. As he rose, the stallion spied a dark smudge entering the fields behind her, but wrote it off as yet another friendly face; hopefully he would be right.

A smile broke out over his finely dished features and he graced the lass with a modest nod, "Thank you, Miss Auriel." His voice had deepened with age, but it had lost none of it's cheerful tenor, "I rather admire your horns and your eyes are very pretty." Rift found himself looking too long at the mare and became nervous, what if she was more than friendly? He had seen mother act kind enough to those she wished to court. He pinned his scarlet eyes to the slate of his hooves, shuffling them uncomfortably and praying for direction.

Salvation came in the form of his herdmates.

The black smudge that had entered the grounds turned out to be Badger, the haltered gent greeting the pair easily and with aplomb. Before Rift could respond, though, the pale painted form of Laedere came into focus, the gentle mare speaking in her accented tongue. The grin that had graced Rift's features previously came rushing back, the presence of his family heartening his resolve and helping ease the anxiety that had began to nibble at his heart.

"Hello, friends. It is good to finally meet you, Badger, and wonderful to see you two again, Laedere." The sorrel lad nodded absently and motioned with his nose toward the alicorn guest, "This is Auriel, we have just met and she seems very kind."

I cocked my head to one side, the pale azure lock behind my ears slipping into view. For a moment, my smile faltered, for I was slow to comprehend the situation. The red pegasus had dipped his body into a bow, a formal greeting. I hadn't taken our meeting to be one of formality, but now that he had inflicted such an affair upon me, I had no choice but to attempt to go along with it. I was barely familiar with signs of respect, so I decided the best route would be to simply imitate the red.

I did my best, but my own bow was not nearly as graceful and practiced as his. I was never quite a graceful or elegant mare anyway, my body was built for the battlefield. Nevertheless, my attempt was not something I was ashamed of. A bright smile lit my features, exhaling a haze of onyx smoke as I came up. He complimented my horns, my eyes, and my cheeks immediately grew hot. Another thing I was not experienced in: compliments. Despite being aged a few years, I retained a few childish tendencies (what would you expect? I lived by myself for like two of those years). My eyes flicked to my hooves, glancing shyly up to my test subject every now and then.

"Thank you,"  I stated softly, the smoke from my lips billowing around my face. I let a silence settle between us. The awkwardness was practically palpable. The complimenting technique of making friends was not working quite as well as I had hoped it would.

Date of Experiment: Sometime in Orangemoon

Resolving My "I Have No-Friends" Problem Pt. I

Purpose: For me to figure out the best method of making friends.

Hypothesis: I will charm everyone into being my friend with sheer wit and undeniable regality.

Procedure: I compliment the horse and they become my friend.

Variables: Gender of horse, herd that the horse belongs to, is weather a factor? I feel like it could be. Personality of horse. (There's other variables, I'm sure, but this the big stuff, so let's stick with just this.)

Data: UHM complimenting him made the situation awkward af.

Conclusion: I complimented this pegasus stallion, he complimented me back, and it got awkward. Experiment is going to be considered a fail. If I were to repeat this experiment, I don't think I'd compliment a stallion, I'd compliment a mare instead.

I flicked a single pale ear to the side, I turned my head to see a dark figure approaching. I pricked my ears forward, a relieved smile had graced my features. The horse lacked both horns and wings, though I did my best to stifle my unrelenting superiority complex and act small, shy, and approachable.

I returned his nod, learning that the onyx colored stallion was called Badger. A healer. I had never taken much interest in the field, but I deemed it a respectable profession. "My name is Auriel, Protector of the World's Edge,"  I spoke proudly with a huff of harmless smoke.

Soon another joined us, another with wings. When I saw her, my jaw dropped. The mare was followed by a sea creature, though the animal seemed to have no qualms with being out of the water. It seemed just as content swimming through the air as it would the water. Though, I was deeply interested in how this mare came to obtain her companion, I had never seen one like it before. Her words were remarkably formal, more so than the red's. Hers were different, dripping with ancient, delicate lyrics.

"I'm Auriel,"  I replied to Laedere's greeting slowly, still perplexed by her appearance. For these two horses, I would attempt a different experimental procedure: be myself and see what happens. Now that I was surrounded by these horses, I was overwhelmed by their scent. It was familiar, it was sandy. "Are you all from the Throat? My sister, Shida, lives there,"  I stated in a perky tone, straightening to the fullest extent of my height. I let the haze of my breath linger, letting it be as seductive as it pleased.

The familiar figure of Laedere brings a warm smile to my face, and I give her a whicker of greeting. Along with her floating dolphin companion - which had once scared the ever living shit out of me - she was the first face I saw during my second foray into Helovia, and I owe her a lot. Without her, I might not have come to the Throat and been granted with the rank I now hold, nor would I possess the happiness that I currently do, the contentment with my situation.

Rift introduces us and Auriel, and I look towards the latter. She reveals that she is a Protector of the World' Edge, and I realise that this is the sort of woman who holds Erthe's life in her hands - whilst the white girl is young, she will be relying on the herd's warriors to protect her. "Nice to meet you, miss Auriel. Do you know a filly named Erthe in the World's Edge herd?" I tilt my haltered head at her. She certainly seems of the correct build to be a warrior, so I think my little niece will be safe under her care.

She asks if we know a Shida, and I shake my head. I've probably met her in meetings, but the name rings no bells for me. I look around, hunting for things to observe - after all, the point of a patrol is to patrol, even if it's far more fun to stand here and talk. "So...shall we begin? I'm sure there's plenty of resources here that the herd could use." There's new varieties of herbs that I've never seen before, and I'm soon leaning down to sniff at them, trying to determine whether I should take them home with me for further study or not.

Rift seemed relieved to see the pair of herdmates arrived. Still, Laedere had only managed a nod and a welcome. Ah, so the one before them was Auriel and was apparently nice. She doubted that one could truly gauge niceness off of first meetings. But, still, she knew that they were welcoming strangers into their home in the Threshold daily off of first impressions so she would not judge too much. It was what the leaders wished… even if she couldn't understand how one was a mare and how other mares had the ability to hold such high positions within the ranks. Maybe the leader was of noble blood - the only one left in a long lineage and it was a necessity for that lineage to be continued. She would probably be swollen with child soon anyways, if that was the case. And, should she bear a son that son would rule in a few years time. That was the only logical explanation which Laedere could come to.

But, still. The point of this venture was not for her to ponder the intricacies of this system which she was being ruled under. The point was to find more information on the lands around them - to inform others if anything strange seemed to be happening to the lands. So, back to the task at hand. Her ears swiveled to focus on the mare's voice - a protector of the World's Edge. Her jaw wants to drop. More mares, in other lands, fighting because they could! What kind of world had she stepped into when she came here. Alas, the mare asks if they were from the Throat and said that Shida was her sister. Laedere's mind spins - meanwhile Ardere could care less and is trying to play with Rift and Badger's manes should they allow it. This mare was Shida's sister? Oh, she could only hope that she didn't act the same way that Shida did. So uncivilized what that mare. "Mineself hath been on but one patrol with this Shida ye speak of," Laedere offers, eyes flickering over toward Badger who had also been happy to see her. He inquires about a foal by the name of Erthe (oh how everyone knows so many more creatures than she… it would have been embarrassing for the mares to not know those whom were nearby in her lands; but here she still couldn't figure out how they wanted the damn customs to work).

Badger, thankfully, begins to pull them back to the task at hand - speaking of herbs that the herd might be able to use. Confused, she blinks and stares at him only to realize he is speaking of the plants that were strewn across the lands. Magic, of many sorts, had been used to heal ailments back home. It was magic only held by the top matron, the one who cared for no child, and was conferred with by the leaders of other ranks. She was said to have the most intelligence, but had no power to make final decisions. She only offered suggestions and healed any who she deemed needed to stay alive longer than nature would have allowed.

Carefully, she shuffled her limbs - eyes looking over the different plants before turning to Badger, "What would ye wish for mineself to gather?" she inquired - having no clue where to begin, or what even was going to serve some kind of medicinal purpose.

OMG so sorry I keep taking so long!
