tuppence

a touch of destiny

Aimlessly she wandered now, her hopes trickling out the tip of her tail as she traced slowly between the fir and pine. This was a foreign land to her; much different to the tropics where she made her home. what had made her wander so far though?
Three months it had been since Tuppence had set off to lay her sister to rest. Her name was Carlisle, and she had died many years too young. Broken bones were carried on Tuppences back for weeks over hills and forest, fields and lakes. It was tradition; Carlisles legs were buried in the red waste between her homeland and Helovia, Her skull burried in the forests to the far north, her ribs sunk in the great sea. The does precious hooves had been destined for the tallest summit in Helovia, the one that towered above the Frostbreath steppe; this was until all four were stolen. Desperately she had looked for the culprit, the theif who had taken the very last piece of the puzzle. Would Carlisle ever be at peace now if her hooves had been taken for medalions? They would never rest on the highest mountain, so how could the gods of their homeland allow her to rest. The circle was broken, the ritual a failure.

The anonymous outlaws had escaped her. What was the point of wandering any further? Judging by  the trees, the whistle and rustle of the birds and hum of a full creek, Tuppence could only assume she had made it to Helovia. It was a place of magic, or so she had heard.
It would be months before she returned home if she turned back now, so why turn back at all? She could after all be turning away from the theifs doorstep; She knew nothing about Helovians but perhaps they were the culprits. To go home would mean total defeat, and the sliver of hope left in the spotted does belly took her cloven clefts plunging forwards. Tuppence turned her blacked lips  to the sky above the leafy canopy and chanted a promise to her sister.

"I find you" Tuppence declared to the heavens, sharp hazel eyes glaring so fiercely at the sky that even the gods would feel a their bite.

She had taken her return to the Edge with a new hop in her step. She had missed it more than anything else, and now she felt she owed the new King and Queen something in return for letting her reside in the depths of pine once more. What better way to do that then to seek those in the Threshold, who were also looking for a place of solace. If any place were to have one, it would be the Edge, it was where she had been taken to by Miss Kahlua all those seasons ago. Her hazel orbs held a slight wistfulness to them as she carried herself closer and closer to the clearing, remembering the painted lady and how kind she had been to her. Where was she now? Did she leave too? Would she ever return like Myrrine had? These questions only made her feel more and more sad, but before much could be done about it, the femme sensed another in the vicinity.

With spotted ears pricked the girl searched the trees for a sign of life, before finally coming across a beautiful mare, powder white adorning a chocolate bodice. Her hair was woven into thick braids, all neatly placed together as if she were born with them that way. The winged maiden couldn't help but smile at such a pretty sight, before finally making herself known with a soft whicker. Dipping her head gently, she approached at a calm and friendly pace, making sure that this newcomer would be comfortable with her presence first. Once she was within speaking distance she stopped, leaving the gap open for the other mare to play with. Milky tail swished at her hocks, and soon a brilliant smile full of sunshine graced her black lips," Hello Miss! Welcome to Helovia! My name is Myrrine, it's a pleasure to meet you!"

The Sunspear

The northern stretches of Helovia were never Megaera’s favorite place to be; whenever she was away from the Dragon’s Throat, it was as if she had left her heart back in the southern sands. As it was all that her heart loved was there: her children, her lover, her herd… she even loved the blistering sun and the harsh climate and each hour that passed was one sooner until she was back where she belonged. It was necessary, however, for her to travel out from her home on occasion (for diplomatic and practical purposes) and though she left her heart behind it was made easier that the other half of her soul accompanied her on these journeys. Gwaihir, now a fully fledged adult in glistening gold and rich brown feathers, was a magnificent being, and her closest friend. Though he was of a grumpy disposition and they often disagreed, the companionship and understanding that existed between them was more than enough to keep the Sunspear in good spirits.

On their way south again, the bay battlemare cut through the forested pass of the Threshold on foot with the eagle swooping lazily through the trees ahead of her. More often than not, the region housed the newcomers to halva and perhaps they would find someone in need, (or someone it would benefit the Throat to recruit). It was Gwaihir that heard the voices, one low and raspy, the other bright and chipper, and followed the sounds to where the butterfly-winged and antlered mares converged. Not bothering to keep quiet of concealed her perched on a high branch above them and watched carefully out of a baleful golden gaze. “Two mares. Both strangers.” he spoke silently into Megaera’s mind and she altered her course to follow. Reaching them, she paused for a moment, on the edge of vision to study the two. The wings of the younger one were certainly and odd sight, but she was rather more interested in the macabre trinkets the darker one carried. Meg had one carried bones on her mane and they had been reminders of death and her own hatred, and by the Sun’s grace she had destroyed them along with the darkest chapter of her life. What does this mare carry with her?

With a whicker to announce her presence she moved forward from the shadows. “Good day to you both, I hope I am not disturbing you.” She gestured upward with her muzzle to where the eagle perched and continued with a wry smile “Gwaihir and I are always eager to meet new faces. I am Megaera, of the Dragon’s Throat.” The eagle clicked his beak in protest, he never liked anyone save his Meg and her little ones.

tuppence

a touch of destiny

She had journeyed further through the threshold, crossing creeks and carefully tumbling over fallen trees. The mission to entomb her dead sister had been lonely indeed, so the odd doe subconsiously longed for company.
"If this Helovia, Where Helovians?"
Her question was directed not only rhetorically at her own mind, but to each bird in the trees or every little mammal burrowed in their roots. It was almost a challenge in fact. Coincidentally, it was at that very moment that her audits captured hoofbeats among the birdsong. "Ah, Here helovians" Was Tuppences next smirk, turning her stained maw to face the approaching stranger. She made no attempt at all to further acknowledge the spotted doe; only gazed numbly at the mare through her own hazel sight givers. Studying her quickly Tuppence noticed that this does spotted coat was certainly not her most distinguishing feature. She was winged, these were not your average not bird-like pennons. These were the delicate wings similar to that of a butterfly, a whole kaleidoscope of colours making up their palette.
"Hello Miss! Welcome to Helovia! My name is Myrrine, it's a pleasure to meet you!"

The line sounded almost rehearsed to Tuppence's slightly simpler ears. Would she to get a tour of the sights and attractions Helovia had to offer? But now her thoughts were turning unpleasant, and she always hated her ability to make an incredibly quick, assumed judgement of strangers. Tuppence had absolutely no clue on Helovias customs, or any other land for that matter. Softly turning on her haunches she paced towards the stranger.
"Myrrine" She tried her best at pronouncing the faes name as she neared, then reached to the mares forhead and pressed her maw softly against the whorl in the center of her head in a kiss. It was the traditional greeting in the land she had travelled so far from, and she really didn't know any different. "I Tuppence" was her next deep murmur, her brown eyes now only inches from Myrrines.

Anothers hoofbeats filled the air and soon another doe was present among them, but that didn't stop Tuppence from gazing into the spotted faes intense hazel eyes. She heard the shatter of a birds beak, and that was just enough to pull her gaze to the newer stranger. There was something about this mare; She held herself more fiercely, more daringly then the pied girl. The Eagle that piped from a branch above sparked Tuppences curiosity, wishing to reach out and touch him; She had never seen one so close. This new stranger held a similar appearance to herself; Dark and exotic. She was beautiful, and for that Tuppence felt a challenge almost.
“Gwaihir and I are always eager to meet new faces. I am Megaera, of the Dragon’s Throat.”

Her nares turned to the golden eagle once again, wishing to greet him with a kiss like she had the other speckled stranger. Instead she turned to the dark mare and stepped forwards, reaching up with her stained lips to kiss the whorl on his strangers head, hoping she would accept her introduction. "I Tuppence... From far away"

It isn't long before she is greeted with a kiss upon her forehead, causing her to suck in her breath softly in surprise. She didn't pull away nor did she respond, instead she only watched the mare as her brown eyes were intensely gazing into her own. The surprise was very evident in them, but she did her best to recover and smiled, dipping her head and attempting to return the gesture. Perhaps this unique maiden was from somewhere not of Helovia, like she had been, which meant her customs were most likely entirely different. Myrrine could understand not being able to adjust as well as one would think when beginning in a new land, and so she couldn't help but follow along. She wasn't one to ever judge others actions when they were simply doing what they thought was right or of the norm. Perhaps that left her vulnerable to many things, but she felt deep down that kindness killed all things over anything else.

Before she could say more another woman approached, causing her spotted crown to turn slightly, before the rest of her body followed suit. She was smooth in her motions, dipping her head politely to acknowledge the newcomer, before moving slightly to the left as if to invite her into the social circle. Sure, this mare was competition to the chance of her bringing someone home, but what she knew best was that this new mare should have options, and if the Throat mare was a more suitable escort than herself, then Myrrine had no room to object. So she smiled, ever polite and friendly as always, and as soon as she was quiet she nodded, responding in that same chipper tone," It's a pleasure to meet you Miss Megara! My name is Myrrine, and I am of the World's Edge." She paused then suddenly, looking to the braided warrior with shining eyes and speaking kindly, excited to finally talk about her home," The World's Edge is a beautiful forest by the edge of the ocean. It's very high up on a cliff. The breeze is always nice and I love the fresh smell of pine. Queen Elsa and King Tembovu rule there, and they are very kind."

She giggled lightly, barely being able to contain the excitement she had within her, though suddenly she realized perhaps this response wouldn't be so well received. She usually was the happy-go-lucky type, but would often try and tone it down for those who weren't so pleased with such an approach. She only hope she hadn't scared Miss Tuppence away, or irked the fellow Helovian with her notions. She was only proud of where she belonged, and because of her passion and love for the herd it often caused her to show much more enthusiasm than those would expect. She only hoped these two women would forgive her silliness...

Through the trees she went. The trees were nearly bare, the leaves finding their seasonal place upon the ground in a thick blanket. Each step was careful, as some spots were slick with decay and remnants of Orangemoon snow. Ears twisted and rotated, listening for voices or sounds to betray others making their way through Helovia's doorway. It didn't take long before she happened upon a small gathering, and she hoped she hadn't missed the closing remarks.

It appeared as though she was late for the party. Two pegasi women had beat her to the newcomer, and the blue was sure they had already initiated their recruitment spiels. She typically recognized those who came to this neck of the woods; it seemed as though each herd had their usual recruiters. But this was fine, as she had no intentions on learning of those who had roots already planted. Not here in the Threshold, at least. The victim of their onslaught was dark, crowned with antlers and adorned by braids. She was unusual, and the accent dripping from her words was like nothing Ki'irha had ever heard before.

It looked like she was just in time.

Plastering a smile on her velvet lips, she approached. "Hello, my dear," she crooned, eyes glittering in the sunlight. Her coat shined in the warm light, shades of cobalt rippling down her starry pelt. Everything about the newcomer's appearance put her out of place. The beads, the medallions and the bone - a jaw bone? - made the blue more curious as to her origins. "Excuse my late arrival to this meeting, usually I am more punctual in welcoming newcomers to Helovia." She came to a stop several paces away, dipping her head in greeting and respect. "I am Ki'irha, corporal of the Aurora Basin. Though I don't typically eavesdrop, I couldn't help but catch your name. It's lovely to meet you, Tuppence." She turned her gaze for a moment to the other two mares, giving a curt nod to each out of respect. It was rude to ignore others, and this was common ground. They all held the same mission in the Threshold.

They would all share their piece, and the doe would decide who to follow home. It was the same song and dance every time. But it never became boring. After everyone shared their piece, the star girl spoke again. The butterfly girl (again, how unusual those wings were) came from the Edge. Many times the corporal had met Tembovu here in this forest, so to find out he was a king came as a bit of a shock. Didn't he have better things to do than mingle here collecting newcomers? Perhaps that is why he had deligated this visit to Myrrine. "I come from the far north, deep within the mountains. Though not as warm or lush as most places here, it is hospitable in its own way." Turning her eyes to the sunspear, she waited to hear her describe the accommodations she had to offer.

Talk
Sorry for the late arrival! She missed all the initial conversation, figured I would stick her in after Tuppence introduced herself.

The Sunspear

This foreigner was a strange one, to be sure. Her voice, her appearance, all seemed so wildly exotic and as such she held Megaera’s interest. Maybe if she’d been a child and armed with the excuse of ignorance she could have asked why the antlered mare carried the trinkets she did—perhaps her reasonings were similar to ones Meg had used all those years ago? What was this one running from? It was the mannerisms, however that left the Sultana quite taken aback. Tuppence approached, much closer than Megaera was accustomed to being on first meeting and before Meg could do more than pull her ears back, the antlered woman planted a kid upon her forehead.

The Sunspear tensed, blinking once, twice, momentarily stunned by the strange gesture and not entirely sure how she felt about it. Gwaihir, however, knew exactly how he felt about a stranger touching his Meg… The children were fine, Einarr he had learned to tolerate, but this was unacceptable to the territorial bird of prey. Didn’t this stranger know that his Meg was the Khaleesi of the Sands, the Sun’s chosen? He screeched (a harsh, angry sound) and abandoned his perch in the trees to rest on his bonded’s back. There he sat, wings ruffling and every feather puffed as large as he could make them. Gold eyes watched the other mare menacingly and Meg could hear the furious diatribe he wished to hurl at Tuppence: ”Disrespect! No one touches Mine without my leave. Try again, horned one and Gwaihir will tear your spotty hide to ribbons!” Meg could not surprise the chuckle that rose in her throat. the greeting had been strange, but she might have shrugged it off and no harm done, but apparently her brother had a much higher opinion of Meg she she herself did. She turned her head, nipping lightly toward Gwaihir’s wing in a swift but good natured rebuke. She may not have been a stickler for manners but the bird was getting a bit carried away. She turned back to the newcomer with an apologetic smile. “Well met, Tuppence. I’m sorry to say I misspoke, Gwaihir’s in a thoroughly antisocial mood today. Be assured, it’s nothing against you personally.” At this the eagle gave the bay mare a swift peck on her withers. ”It is so!”

Megaera paid little mind to her finicky companion and instead listened to Myrinne start off the rounds of Threshold pitches. The girl was charming, and though Meg might have had differing opinions on landscaping preferences it was clear she enjoyed her home. A shadow crossed her face at the mention of the king and queen—both were names she knew but last she had heard Torleik and Mauja had ruled in the Edge. If there had been a change in leadership the Sultana should have heard.

The party grew and Meg returned the cobalt corporal’s nod of greeting. Gaucho had settled a ceasefire with the unicorns of the Basin, but Meg still found herself not entirely willing to trust it(thank Thranduil for that). Still, she thought, no use in needling without cause. The tensions between north an south had started long before she had some to halva and Meg could see no purpose in dragging up ancient history so she forced herself to relax. Ki’irha finished her bit and so came around the circle the conversation moved to Meg. ”The Throat is to the south, our island is a desert in truth, but the oasis is lush and a good home. You’d needn't worry of swimming there, our God of Sun creased a bridge for our winless brethren. It a harsh climate in Tallsun, perhaps, but more temperate in the coming season that you’d find anywhere in Helovia.” She was certainly more subdued than the butterfly girl, but the easy affectionate tone made it clear that she loved her home no less. “There is another herd in Helovia, the Falls, that hide themselves away just north of here, and neutral land between and a good few that wander those stretches.” The Sunspear rounded out the summary of Helovia there, thinking Tuppence may as well have all the facts. She might have stopped, but curiosity got the better of her. “Was there something particular that brings you to Helovia?”

tuppence

a touch of destiny

Tuppences gaze tossed between the small group of women, including the new face on the scene. This girls coat reminded Tuppence of the clear night skys above her homeland, the star-dusted landscapes of Tortuga. The femme spoke and another introduction was necessary it seemed, but this doe intrigued Tuppence just as much as the other two had. Hoofbeats and footfalls were light and free as she trod to the oceanic fae who had introduced herself as Ki'irha. Just as she had done to the other strangers, Tuppence pressed her lips softly to the bridge of the unicorns face. Now each of these mares were a part of her universe, her one-ness she believed in. She acknowledged their soul as one of millions in the galaxy. "Tuppence" she uttered slowly, though it seemed Ki'irha already knew her name.

”The Throat is to the south, our island is a desert in truth, but the oasis is lush and a good home."
The way the hazel queen described this place made Tuppences eyelids flutter and ears prick - it sounded like home. The proud eagles stance on his mothers back tapped at Tuppences nerves, and so she stayed away from the one named Gwaihir. He had not taken kindly to her earlier greeting and had startled her quite with his deafening screech. Ki'rha, the star-dusted beauty gave a chilling description of her northern frostbitten home; just the thought of living in such a place made this freckled fae shudder. No, that wouldn't do.

Myrinne, the other spotted girl pitched to her the tale of a much more agreeable destination. Sea cliffs... but pine? No. no no no. Tuppence couldn't stand the smell; it only reminded her of poison. Her effervescent mind however kept wondering back to the place the darker winged-one hailed from and named the Dragons Throat. Before she could give her answer to each lass, Meagara spoke a question; “Was there something particular that brings you to Helovia?”.
"Theif!" Tuppence bellowed "Theif stole sister. I come 'ere to Helovia to bury 'er hoof in the place they call Frostbreat' steppe. I find 'im one day, I take sister back" She tried her best to speak in a steady tone, but her voice cracked and broke with grief and sadness. Perhaps she would never find Carlisle.
"Megeara, Eagle-Mother. Does this Dragons Throat have room for this one?" Tuppence quizzed, gesturing to herself. Perhaps she could travel with Maegara to this dragons throat and then begin her investigation.
I find you.
