I have loved the stars too fondly || To be fearful of the night

The corporal slipped soundlessly beneath the night sky. The accumulating snow muted her steps, and the soft tingling noise of falling sleet covered any sound the drifts did not consume. The precipitation was slowing, and as the cloud cover broke, splashes of the inky sky shone through. The blue was studded with stars, and deep within the grey, the light of the moon seeped through in a pallid glow. Her hood was pulled up, covering the slope of her neck and soft ears, protecting them from the harsh bite of the night air.

She moved slowly, winding easily through the evergreens and boulders that bordered the lake. She was heading home, to the shelter of her little cave littered with dried flowers and broken crystal, with boughs of pine for a bed. Home sweet home. She was happy to nearly be home. Despite her preference for solitude, a partner to join her would always be welcome. Some nights, there was too much silence.

She stopped at the rim of the lake. Ice had begun to grow in thick layers several weeks ago, and finally the ice had captured the entire surface under a mirror-like sheen.. Ki'irha tipped her head, silver eyes soft as they looked over the lake. The wind had kept most of the snow from collecting on the surface, and there was something so pristine about the glassy finish. It called the heavens to earth, reflecting every sparkle, every shade of blue. tipping her head to the sky, she drew lines between the stars, forming constellations. They were constellations her mother had taught her. She thought of the stories, of the great bear and her cub, of the hunter and his dog, of stars that would lead a lost soul home. She felt warm for a moment, despite the cold wind that tugged on her hood. She missed her mother more than anything.

The eerie creaking of the lake broke her from her wandering. The ice heaved, a fissure breaking the surface. The corporal sighed, the noise escaping her with a puff of frosted breath. She stepped away, beginning to trace the shore back to her cave. As she began to leave, a flash of reflected moonlight caught her eye. Turning back to the water she leaned back, allowing something to recatch the glow and draw her forward. It looked sleek, like a fattened fish twisting beneath the water. Only, it was buried beneath the sand, only a portion of it visible. The blue stepped out onto the ice, the first step slow and tentative, the second one less so, the third and fourth still delicate but more confident. She continued farther, careful not to fall in an exaggerated display of legs and clumsiness. When the blue finally stopped, she pressed her velveteen nose against the ice, a huff of breath blowing cold back at her. It appeared to be the tip of a blade. She scraped a cloven toe across the ice, peeling back a line of frost.

This certainly wasn't the smartest idea she's had.

Rearing up, she placed all of her energy into her front hooves as she came crashing down. Her muscles quivered as the former strike reverberated up her legs. The ice didn't give. Again and again she pounded into the ice, each time blemishing its perfect finish. She growled under her breath, hoping the shiny trinket wasn't just a mica covered stone (though, she would be sure to place it among her other shining crystals and glittering rocks if it was). She raised up again, and allowed the magic of her rank to swell and bloom in her breast, let it flow down her legs, and she came crashing down. The ice heaved and shattered, shards dropping beneath her, and she plunged beneath the icy surface.

She would have sworn as she was engulfed by the icy water, but she was too distracted by her instincts screaming to swim. her legs beat frantically beneath her as she sank, bubbles bursting from her mouth and nose. She sank like a stone, thrashing and fighting and drowning. Oh my god drowning. She hadn't realized how deep the water was. She looked up, silver catching the sight of the swollen moon, rippled and uneven beneath the water's surface.

Nope. Not dying today.

She began to swim, only instead of up, she swam down. She dragged herself through the water, feeling the crystals of cold dig into her skin and muscles, felt her bones stiffen and ache. She bit her tongue, fighting the urge to breath in, to divert from her mission to drink in the sweet frigid air. Hooves planted on the sandy bottom, and her face dropped as she fought against her sudden buoyancy. She dug with the tip of her horn, freeing the blade from its capsule of sand and grit. She grabbed it between clenched jaws, then pushed off from the bottom, tired legs forcing her upwards.

Breaking the surface, she threw her head and watched the double sided blade skitter across the surface towards shore. Every attempt she made at heaving herself back onto the ice resulted in more of the surface breaking, until she lazily tread water in a churning pit of icy chunks and bitter cold. But still she chipped away, fighting until hooves braced against the the soft floor of the lake. She broke through the remaining ice, before collapsing in an exhausted heap beside the weapon that had cause so much trouble. She shivered, teeth chattering, breathing deep breaths.

Eyes, half-open, evaluated the blade. It was double sided, each blade slightly sloped in the opposite direction as the other. The blade was the softest blue, with markings that looked like the ripples on a smooth lake. There were engravings in the blade, small markings she didn't recognize. Perhaps a constellation? The star girl had no idea.

She rolled onto her stomach, knowing she needed to remove herself from the cold. She grabbed the blade, tucking it into the wet bundle of hood around her neck. Her hood. She retreated into the night, knowing that this blade was not meant for her.

It was meant to repay a friend.
